Antpool overtakes Foundry as largest bitcoin mining pool

Web3 & Enterprise·December 02, 2023, 2:21 AM

Antpool, a Singapore-headquartered open access mining pool that supports ten cryptocurrencies, has recently surpassed Foundry USA to become the foremost bitcoin mining pool in terms of monthly blocks mined.

That’s according to a report published by TheMinerMag, a bitcoin mining industry publication run by New York public relations firm BlocksBridge Consulting.

This development indicates a shift in bitcoin mining pool dynamics since January 2022. According to Bitcoin network data, Antpool mined 1,219 blocks in November, slightly edging out Foundry USA’s 1,216 blocks. The total rewards for Antpool’s miner clients reached 8,672 BTC, excluding the 83.6 BTC designated for refunds.

Bitmain affiliate

AntPool is an affiliate company of leading crypto mining equipment manufacturer, Bitmain. This surge in Antpool’s hashrate aligns with Bitmain’s substantial importation of over 4,800 metric tons of Antminer S19XP and S19XP Hydro to its U.S. subsidiary in Georgia between June and November. These imports have contributed to an estimated total hashrate exceeding 37 EH/s. The exact activation status of Bitmain’s imported hashrate and whether it is utilized for its own purposes, remains unclear.

Foundry USA had previously held the leading position in mining pools since early 2022, benefiting from the rise of North American mining operations following China’s crackdown in 2021. While Antpool consistently secured the second position, its hashrate began closing the gap on Foundry USA around June this year.

China vs. U.S. competitive dynamic

The two companies dominate bitcoin mining. With one having a parent company headquartered in China and the other being U.S.-centric, their positioning in terms of overall blocks mined is being seen by some as a reflection of competition between entities in China and the United States in terms of bitcoin mining dominance. Addressing that dynamic in response to CoinDesk recently, CryptoQuant Web3 Analyst Bradley Park wrote:

“China is aggressively mining ahead of the approval of a Bitcoin ETF. As the Bitcoin halving nears, I anticipate a competitive surge between China and the US in mining machine productivity. This is because the unit cost of mining Bitcoin is likely to escalate due to increasing power expenses and rising mining difficulty.”

The bitcoin hashrate has been climbing continuously throughout 2023, reaching new all-time highs along the way.

It’s worth noting that despite Antpool’s dominance in blocks mined, data from BTC.com reveals that the company’s self-reported real-time hashrate consistently lags behind Foundry USA’s over the past three months. The cause of this discrepancy remains uncertain, raising questions about variance or reporting errors affecting Antpool’s real-time hashrate.

Bitmain established Antpool in 2014, and it was later spun out of Bitmain to become an independent entity in 2021. Meanwhile, Foundry is a wholly owned subsidiary of Digital Currency Group (DCG). Both Bitmain and DCG have been facing financial challenges over the course of the past year.

In a separate development, Foundry took to social media platform X on Thursday to confirm that it is discontinuing support for The Graph protocol, Axelar Network, Polkadot and Flow. The firm said that the changes were decided upon in order to better align the business with its strategic business goals.

BIT Exchange Unveils XRP Options Trading

BIT Exchange Unveils XRP Options TradingBIT Exchange, a cryptocurrency derivatives platform, has announced the introduction of XRP options trading in a move that provides for more advanced trading dynamics within the digital assets space. The development, disclosed via a blog post published to the company’s website on Thursday, offers users the unprecedented opportunity to engage in XRP options trading without the need to possess the actual cryptocurrency.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashUS dollar settlementA distinguishing feature of this initiative is that profit and loss settlements will be conducted in US dollars. To ensure a seamless experience, BIT Exchange has partnered with OrBit Markets to maintain robust order book liquidity. This expansion of offerings complements the exchange’s existing suite, which already includes stalwarts like Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Cardano (ADA), Toncoin (TON), and Milady (LADYS).Facilitating hedgingFor the uninitiated, options are derivative contracts that empower the holder with the right to buy or sell the underlying asset at a predetermined price before a specified date. Call options grant the holder the buying privilege, while put options provide the selling prerogative. Typically deployed for hedging purposes, options play a pivotal role in mitigating bullish or bearish risks, and they can also act as a supplementary revenue source when traders “write” options alongside their spot market holdings.Justin Buitendam, BIT Exchange’s Global Head of Institutional Sales, remarked on the milestone, stating: “We’re excited to be among the early platforms offering XRP options trading to institutional and retail traders, providing both long and short options trading opportunities.”XRP boostAs of now, XRP boasts a market capitalization of $26.5 billion, positioning it as the world’s fifth-largest cryptocurrency. Notably, XRP, akin to several other alternative cryptocurrencies, exhibits greater volatility compared to the more established Bitcoin and Ether. The native token of the Ripple global payments network has experienced a market resurgence in recent weeks, following a positive outcome to a lawsuit taken by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against Ripple Labs in the United States. In the wake of that decision, many cryptocurrency exchanges that had delisted the token immediately reinstated it. BIT Exchange’s strategic move to introduce XRP options aligns with those recent legal developments.Ripple, as the issuer of the XRP token, garnered a partial victory in its ongoing legal battle against the SEC. The court ruled that XRP is not classified as a security when traded on centralized exchanges. However, a different classification may apply when XRP is directly sold to institutions. The matter is far from settled, however. More recently, the SEC has sought permission to challenge the court’s verdict, underscoring the dynamic and evolving landscape of cryptocurrency regulations.BIT Exchange was spun out of Singapore-based crypto financial services platform, Matrixport. Both have been co-founded by Jihan Wu, better known for having founded leading Chinese crypto mining outfit Bitmain.

VCs Say US Crypto Crackdown Opportunity for Asia

VCs Say US Crypto Crackdown Opportunity for AsiaA couple of Hong Kong-based venture capitalists told Bloomberg TV in an interview that aired on Tuesday that the current crypto crackdown in the United States is a boon for Asia and particularly for Hong Kong in establishing itself as a global crypto hub.© Pexels/lalesh aldarwishMartin Baumann, Managing Partner and Co-Founder of CMCC Global, one of Asia’s first VC funds focused purely on blockchain and crypto, said that “Hong Kong has always been a financial capital of Asia and we believe in this location.”Golden opportunityWhile the fund has a global mandate, it believes that investor focus is shifting away from North America towards Asia. Baumann’s colleague, CMCC Global Managing Partner and Co-Founder Charlie Morris said that “the US has been quite negative from the regulatory perspective and it really seems to us that the US is shooting itself in the foot with a machine gun.”Morris elaborated, stating that the US crypto crackdown is handing a golden opportunity to other world regions to lead on blockchain and crypto. Baumann chimed in to clarify that one third of all blockchain equity deals are currently being done in Asia. He maintains that most of the investment community in the West doesn’t appreciate the extent to which capital is being committed into the space by Asian entities.Morris expanded further: “We see places like Hong Kong having a real opportunity at this point in time to bring those firms and entrepreneurs to the city.”Launching $100M blockchain fundAgainst that backdrop CMCC Global is launching a $100 million fund, where funding will be allocated to blockchain projects. Specifically the duo are targeting crypto and blockchain firms at Series A and Series B funding stages. Baumann believes that in tandem with the fact that there’s a lot of innovation emerging in Asia, “there’s plenty of capital sitting on the sidelines waiting for the right entry valuations to pull the trigger.”While Baumann and Morris are majority stakeholders in CMCC Global, the Winklevoss twins (Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss) also have an equity stake in the business. Founders of the Gemini crypto exchange platform, they are investors alongside Hong Kong based Richard Li, who has a net worth estimated to be in the region of $4.6 billion.VC investment into crypto slowed down considerably since the onset of the most recent crypto winter. However, that activity has still been ongoing, something that is entirely different to the 2018 bear market when investment came to a complete standstill. In April, CMCC partnered with Switzerland-based Syz Group with the objective of establishing a funding vehicle with a minimum $50 million fund earmarked for crypto-centric hedge fund investment.Meanwhile, in speculating on the prospects of bitcoin, the CMCC duo expressed the view that double digit gains are well within reach. Morris envisages a Bitcoin unit price of $40,000 in 2023. From a long term perspective the CMCC co-founder suggested that “I can easily see us breaking all time highs and easily breaking $100,000 for bitcoin.”

Report paints bright picture of India’s Web3 development

India Blockchain Week (IBW) 2024 was held on Dec. 4-5 in Bangalore with venture capital and blockchain advisory firm Hashed Emergent presenting a report at the event, with positive findings with regard to India’s Web3 sector. Titled “India's Web3 Landscape 2024 Report,” the research was presented at IBW 2024 by Hashed Emergent Senior Associate Sharanya Sahai. Photo by Asif Methar on PexelsGlobal frontrunnerThe report claims that the Web3 ecosystem in India has risen to the point where it is a global frontrunner when its progress is measured against Web3 development internationally. A broad network of Web3 startups has emerged, comprising of over 1,000 fledgling businesses.  Those enterprises are being supported in India by global investment, with Indian Web3 businesses having secured funding in excess of $3 billion since 2020. Taking a more recent snapshot, the report outlines that from January to September 2024, Indian Web3 startups received investment funding to the tune of $462 million, an 82% growth compared with the same period last year. These startups are spread across finance, infrastructure and entertainment niches within Web3, although the study found that the bulk of investment funding was placed with Web3 infrastructure businesses.  Home to 12% of Web3 developersHashed Emergent claims that India is home to 12% of the global pool of Web3 developers, second in the rankings on this metric with the greatest number of such developers living in the United States. However, the report maintains that India is in line to surpass the U.S. relative to the Web3 developer metric by 2027. The world’s most populous country also has strength and depth in terms of Web3 founders. It ranks third globally in terms of the overall size of its Web3 founder base. The Hashed Emergent report suggests that Indian founders, accounting for 5.4% of global Web3 startups, are responsible for driving growth in India relative to AI, decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePIN) and scaling solution projects. Stand-out examples of Indian Web3 enterprises include exchange platforms CoinSwitch, WazirX and CoinDCX, crypto developer integration toolkit provider Transak, blockchain scaling platform Polygon, blockchain-based AI startup Sentient and blockchain protocol Biconomy. Hashed Emergent singled out Sentient and Web3 infrastructure platform Avail Network as projects which have showcased “India’s growing influence in decentralized technologies” in 2024. Adoption challengesThe report points to what Hashed Emergent terms as “an undeniable picture of India’s dominance in global crypto adoption.” That finding falls in line with a report produced by Chainalysis earlier this year, establishing India as the global leader in crypto adoption according to data it compiled.  However, in an opinion piece written by Mithil Thakore recently, an Indian co-founder and CEO of Dubai-based Velar, a Bitcoin liquidity protocol, Thakore claims that there is a disconnect between such metrics and the reality of adoption on the ground in India. In the case of the Chainalysis adoption index, the Velar CEO suggests that a “mirage of adoption” is presented, with massive signup numbers not translating into tangible active participation in the market.  While adoption rates are high, he feels that a greater level of active participation is being prevented due to what he terms as an “ambiguous” stance on cryptocurrencies by the Indian government. Regulatory ambiguity puts uncertainty in the minds of investors, holding back the industry’s growth, Thakore claims.
