The acquisition, involving a purchase of 97% of Satang’s shares, is a significant move in the context of an ongoing trend of traditional financial institutions embracing digital assets. The deal was officially announced on Monday, as disclosed on KBank’s official website.

KBank executed the acquisition through its newly established subsidiary, Unita Capital, whose registered capital is valued at 3.7 billion Thai baht (approximately $103 million). Unita Capital specializes in investments within the digital asset sector. This move underlines the bank’s commitment to stay ahead in the dynamic world of digital finance.

Subsidiary formation

In light of the acquisition, Satang Corporation is set to undergo a name change and will soon be known as Orbix Trade Company Limited. Unita Capital has established a number of other subsidiary companies as a consequence of the buy-out.

KBank’s cryptocurrency venture will be structured into three distinct divisions. Orbix Custodian has been formed, focusing on secure digital asset storage and management. There is a growing demand for reliable digital asset custody services. KBank will use Orbix Custodian as a vehicle to capitalize on that growth opportunity.

Orbix Invest has been established to act as the venture arm of the business relative to the digital assets space. It will focus on fund management in meeting the needs of clients looking for exposure to the digital assets sector. Lastly, Orbix Technology has been established to concentrate on blockchain technology development.

Satang, a prominent player in the Thai cryptocurrency scene, operates a cryptocurrency exchange alongside a range of digital asset services. Notably, Poramin Insom, the founder of Satang, is recognized for his role in launching Firo (formerly Zcoin), a privacy-centric cryptocurrency. Insom confirmed the acquisition via a Facebook post on Monday, acknowledging the evolution of Satang as it transitions under KBank’s ownership.

Insom stated: “I’ve been at Satang since 2017 until now, six years have passed. Currently, Satang on the trading board has already exited according to the news. And there should be an official announcement soon.” He also highlighted Satang’s diversified ventures, including Satang Technology, a blockchain service platform, and Satang Space, focusing on space-related endeavors.

This strategic move by KBank follows its recent launch of a $100 million fund, introduced in September, targeting investments in Web3, fintech, and artificial intelligence (AI). In 2022, KBank launched Bigfin, a digital asset investment analysis platform. Bigfin has since been integrated with the Binance platform.

Last year the bank backed Thai digital asset and blockchain startup Forward, a project that is working on developing a decentralized derivative platform.

KBank is recognized as the second largest lender in Thailand based on assets, trailing behind Bangkok Bank. Thai NVDR Company Limited is the largest shareholder of KBank, as per data from the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), with the SET itself owning 99.9% of NVDR’s shares.

Profitability eludes Canaan despite further growth

Beijing-headquartered crypto mining equipment manufacturer Canaan recently revealed its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2023, demonstrating that it continues to struggle with profitability despite positive numbers relative to revenues and growth.Photo by Sasun Bughdaryan on UnsplashIncreased revenues and salesAccording to the company’s filing, during the last quarter of 2023 Canaan reported a surge of 45.7% in total computing power sold compared to the preceding quarter, reaching 5.5 million Thash/s. This ascent, which reflects a 191.9% increase from the same period in 2022, signifies not just a recovery but a robust resurgence in demand and operational ability. The company's dispatch of 19.6 million Thash/s throughout the year, marking a 29.6% leap from 2022, aligns with the rebound in bitcoin prices observed in Q4 2023, a pivotal factor shaping Canaan's operational revitalization. 47% growth on previous quarterA closer examination of the financials reveals not only surpassing total revenues but also a notable 47.3% quarter-over-quarter growth. Canaan's foray into international markets, bolstered by securing substantial orders from esteemed public company clients, underscores a buoyant sales performance and a positive outlook for the computing sector. Despite the buoyant sales and revenue figures particularly in the mining machine market, the sector has faced ongoing regulatory uncertainties and market fluctuations. Nonetheless, the company's strategic initiatives, alongside the positive market effects of the approval and listing of spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), have been positive. Moreover, Canaan's investments in wafer supply capabilities and strategic financial maneuvers garnered approximately US$136 million through at-the-market (ATM) programs and preferred shares. Recording a lossYet, the company’s journey in 2023 was not without its hurdles. Q4 2023 witnessed a significant increase in product revenues from the previous quarter but a decline from Q4 2022, attributed to dwindling sales prices as the halving event loomed, underscoring the volatility inherent in the cryptocurrency market. Results published last year are indicative of the company’s difficulty. In Q2 2023, revenues were strong, yet the company wasn’t turning a profit. With Q4 results, it’s now clear that the firm lost $421 million in 2023. In Q4, Canaan recorded a net loss of $139 million. That compares with a loss of $91 million in Q4, 2022. The company also expects tough market conditions in 2024. In its forward-looking outlook, it stated:”For the first quarter of 2024, and the second quarter of 2024, the Company expects total revenues to be approximately US$33 million and US$70 million, respectively, considering the challenging market conditions across the industry. This forecast reflects the Company’s current and preliminary views on the market and operational conditions, which are subject to change.” The crypto mining sector remains a very challenging market. With the upcoming Bitcoin halving event set to occur in April, it’s expected that as much as 20% of mining capacity could be forced offline, as some equipment would simply fail to mine on a profitable basis. Indicative of the challenges within the sector, crypto miner Core Scientific was forced into bankruptcy due to market difficulties in December 2022. It has only recently exited that bankruptcy process and now expects to generate revenues of $600 million in 2024. Another Bitcoin miner, Riot Platforms, has warned that profitability may be difficult to achieve in 2024 due to chip shortages.

Coti plans transition to Ethereum layer-2 network in 2024

Coti plans transition to Ethereum layer-2 network in 2024Israeli blockchain developer Coti plans to introduce a scalable, privacy-focused Ethereum layer-2 protocol in 2024. This strategic move aims to extend Coti’s privacy-centric features to a wider audience within the Ethereum ecosystem.Photo by Zoltan Tasi on UnsplashIncorporating ‘garbled circuits’Taking to the X social media platform on Wednesday, Coti unveiled its plan to transition from a standalone protocol to an Ethereum layer-2. The centerpiece of the project, which Coti has termed “Coti v2: a privacy-centric Ethereum L2,” is a cryptographic method known as “garbled circuits.”Garbled circuits are a cryptographic primitive that enables two or more parties to evaluate an arbitrary Boolean circuit securely, without revealing any information beyond the output, all while using a constant number of communication rounds. This innovative approach enables the processing of transactions without exposing sensitive information and data, aligning with the platform’s commitment to privacy.Having originated in the 1980s, garbling protocols have evolved into a crucial element of privacy-preserving technologies, excelling in scenarios where confidential data needs to be part of a computation without revealing the information itself.Focusing on privacyCoti CEO Shahaf Bar-Geffen emphasized the significance of this privacy-oriented protocol, stating:“Sensitive data transmitted as public information on a blockchain is a bug, not a feature.”Bar-Geffen highlighted the protocol’s ability to prevent sensitive data from being exposed to competitors, partners and clients engaged in transactions on Coti’s chain. The CEO elaborated on how garbling protocols differentiate Coti v2 by facilitating transactions and smart contract executions where details remain private between involved parties. The Coti CEO emphasized the critical role of such privacy features in decentralized finance applications, where transaction confidentiality is as essential as transaction integrity. Coti claims that other platforms focusing solely on anonymity for privacy may face regulatory challenges and might not provide a compliant foundation for the broader ecosystem.Targeting specific use casesCoti envisions its protocol catering specifically to use cases demanding advanced privacy provisions in finance and healthcare. Currently designed for enterprises, Coti’s existing protocol enables the management of blockchain-based products such as custom-branded tokens, wallets, website integrations and fiat on-and-off ramps. In a blog post on Medium, the blockchain startup outlined that in addition to privacy, v2 will enable smart contracts, EVM compatibility and Solidity programming, alongside the features currently offered by v1. Notwithstanding these new features on the v2 product, the company confirmed to The Block that in respect of Coti’s original Cardano-based product, “Coti’s work with Cardano continues. We have a project built there called Djed, and that will continue to remain on Cardano.” Djed is an ADA-backed stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar. The anticipated release of Coti v2’s developer net in the second quarter of 2024 signals a move towards realizing the potential in advancing Ethereum’s privacy standards. As a layer-1 protocol, Coti presently contributes to Web3 applications by providing digital infrastructure, including tools for wallets, tokens and payment modules, with a total value locked of $31 million. The upcoming integration as a privacy-centric layer-2 positions Coti as a key player in enhancing Ethereum’s capabilities and fostering a more secure and confidential blockchain experience.
