BC Card Launches Innovative Card Payment NFT Service

South Korean credit card issuer BC Card announced Wednesday (local time) that it has launched a non-fungible token (NFT) issuance service linked to card payments — the first of its kind in the country — marking a significant step in the financial industry’s adoption of blockchain technology.

“The digital finance market is an area of technology and imagination, and it will continue to grow in various ways,” said BC Card Director Lee Sang-jun. “We are pioneering the industry by introducing payment-linked utility NFT services for the first time.”

 

Revolutionizing the use of NFTs

Typically, NFTs are primarily used to prove the uniqueness of digital assets based on their non-replicability, but the card issuer has now integrated them into card payments. This service offers customers proof of payments in the form of NFTs along with various other benefits.

BC Card has been preparing for the NFT market to pick up momentum since 2021. After rigorous internal testing, it first developed and opened its own NFT wallet dubbed “NFTbooc” on the private Ethereum network in April last year. Since then, the NFT wallet has been improved to be more user-friendly. Notably, it was integrated into BC Card’s financial platform PayBook in order to provide customers with a more convenient means to check their personal NFT holdings and participate in events.

The credit card company also issued limited edition NFTs through NFTbooc to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its foundation last year, making them available for both customers and employees. Even during the ongoing crypto winter, the company has continued efforts to integrate NFTs into customer services by facilitating NFT-based payments and emphasizing their technological value.

 

Boosting customer engagement

To celebrate the launch of the newest service, BC Card is also holding a special event for customers until December 31. Each participant will receive random missions, such as using their card within a specific time slot or at a specific store and engaging in a minimum number of transactions. Those who complete the challenges will be airdropped certificates of completion minted as NFTs after the event is closed with the chance to win cashback rewards of up to 100% of the amount of money that they spent during the challenge.

The card issuer plans to hold two additional events, which will be outlined on the PayBook and NFTbooc event pages.

The card company has also applied for three NFT-related patents this year, including one for issuing NFT receipts for secondhand transactions and asset certification NFTs that can be used to prove asset details in the event of a system failure at a given financial company.

These guidelines, spanning 64 articles, impose stringent requirements on gaming companies. These include mandatory licensing in China, a two-year data retention policy, adherence to national and socialist values in content and the eradication of anonymous user registrations.One significant aspect of the guidelines is Article 23, which specifically addresses the use of game tokens. It proposes restrictions on exchanging them for physical goods, services or legal tender.The regulatory landscape becomes more complex due to the ambiguity surrounding cryptocurrencies, which are not recognized as legal tender in China. Although a warning was issued about the risks inherent in non-fungible tokens (NFTs), they remain legal in China. NFTs feature prominently within blockchain-based gaming.Game providers are also confronted with new limitations on inducements, such as bonuses for registration or daily logins, and are mandated to implement measures against irrational consumer spending.Gaming sector falloutIn the wake of these developments, several Chinese tech giants experienced a significant market downturn in Hong Kong. Tencent, a global gaming powerhouse and one of China’s most valuable companies, saw a 12.4% drop on Friday, marking its worst day since October 2008. This decline erased a massive 367 billion Hong Kong dollars ($47 billion) from Tencent’s market value.NetEase, another gaming giant, witnessed a 25% dive in Hong Kong afternoon trade, recording its most substantial daily loss since its listing in June 2020. Additionally, Bilibili and Kuaishou, prominent players in video-sharing and short-video platforms, experienced declines of 9.7% and 7.2%, respectively, given their involvement in online gaming.Market uncertaintyWith this latest development, the future of gaming crypto tokens remains uncertain in China, with investor confidence having been hit hard. Putting the matter in context on Friday, Stansberry Research Analyst Brian Tycangco took to the X social media platform, stating:”Govt regulation will effectively render prevailing business models irrelevant due to uncertainty regarding monetization. Games are inherently reward-based and if you clamp down on the use of rewards/incentives, you turn an entire industry on its head.”The guidelines, open for public consultation until Jan. 22, 2024, have not yet been legally enacted. This time frame allows for feedback and potential adjustments before enforcement.Notably, the Web3 gaming sector has witnessed substantial activity, with approximately a million unique active wallets engaged daily over the past three months, according to DappRadar. Industry experts, including Yat Siu of Animoca Brands, anticipate a potential surge in user engagement, emphasizing the potential impact of these regulations on the gaming industry’s trajectory.

Upbit opens staking quiz event with ETH prizes

South Korea’s largest cryptocurrency exchange Upbit has opened a special event in celebration of its staking service surpassing a total value of KRW 1.5 trillion ($1.2 billion), where users can participate in a staking quiz to receive 0.002 ETH (approximately $4.60) each. Staking refers to the process of entrusting crypto assets to be utilized for a blockchain’s operations and receiving rewards in return.Photo by Nenad Novaković on UnsplashEvent detailsParticipants in the quiz event will have 30 minutes to complete five quizzes related to Upbit’s staking service. The total reward pool is 210 ETH, which will be allocated to 100,000 participants on a first-come, first-served basis the day after answers are submitted. After completing the quiz mission, ten users who also stake their Ethereum assets will get the opportunity to be selected to receive 1 ETH each. "We organized the event to make more users aware of staking on Upbit and to express our gratitude,” Dunamu, the operator of Upbit, said. Upbit’s growing staking platformUpbit’s staking service was officially launched in January last year. Currently, there are five cryptocurrencies that can be staked on Upbit – Ethereum, Cosmos, Cardano, Solana and Polygon. In particular, the exchange does not manage user assets or entrust them to external parties but stakes them through self-operated validators. All staked assets are stored in a cold wallet.
