Cartesi Launches Inaugural dApp on Ethereum Mainnet

Web3 & Enterprise·September 28, 2023, 9:44 AM

Singapore-based Cartesi, the app-specific roll-up protocol with a virtual machine running Linux distributions, has introduced its inaugural dApp.

The decentralized application, aptly named Honeypot, has been designed to serve as a platform for developers and ethical hackers to rigorously scrutinize the security of the Cartesi protocol’s underlying codebase, all in exchange for lucrative bounties.

Honeypot deployment

According to a press release published on Tuesday, Honeypot is set to fulfill the vital role of stress-testing Cartesi’s foundational code on the Ethereum mainnet. The successful deployment of Honeypot will pave the way for Cartesi’s technology to be employed in a multitude of other dApps. Notably, a unique aspect of Honeypot is the tempting incentive it offers. The first individual to successfully hack it will be entitled to drain the sum of 1.77 million Cartesi tokens, equivalent to $220,000, after one year without any constraints.

Embedded within the Honeypot dApp’s backend code is an algorithm that only permits the Cartesi Foundation’s depositor account to make fund withdrawals. Participants who dare to take on this code-breaking challenge must successfully navigate the intricacies of the algorithm to claim the reward.

Developer Advocacy contributor to Cartesi, Gabriel Barros, stated: “We want to welcome all developers to test Cartesi’s Rollup infrastructure — but in a gamified challenge.”

Aiding dApp development

Cartesi stands as a Layer 2 network specifically designed to streamline the development of intricate and powerful dApps. Its mission is to bridge the gap between conventional development practices and blockchain-based solutions, attempting to offer a seamless transition for developers.

At its core, Cartesi introduces a mechanism that enables dApps to execute resource-intensive computations off-chain within a Linux environment. Crucially, these off-chain computations are verifiable by the blockchain, ensuring that the final results remain consistent across all nodes. This approach empowers developers to harness existing software and tools while ensuring compatibility with the blockchain.

Linux inside

The choice of a Linux environment is pivotal to Cartesi’s framework. Linux enjoys widespread usage worldwide, particularly in server environments, making it a familiar and well-adopted platform. This familiarity extends to the extensive array of tools and libraries available within the Linux ecosystem, which are leveraged by developers for a myriad of traditional web applications.

Gabriel Barros underlined Cartesi’s mission, stating:

“Cartesi’s goal is to eliminate the limitations Web3 developers face by enabling them to import decades of familiar programming tools, libraries, and languages to the blockchain. By doing so, Cartesi unlocks a new realm of possibilities, allowing developers to surpass what was previously imaginable with earlier web3 applications.”

Cartesi’s introduction of the Honeypot dApp on the Ethereum mainnet signifies a significant step towards ensuring the security and robustness of its protocol. Furthermore, it demonstrates Cartesi’s intentions in attempting to foster a vibrant and innovative ecosystem for developers in the blockchain space.

United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based crypto market maker and Web3 investment firm DWF Labs has launched a $250 million fund for investment in mid to large-cap crypto projects. The company, which recently switched its administrative base from Singapore to Abu Dhabi, asserts that the fund will contribute towards the real-world adoption of Web3 technology. Photo by Towfiqu barbhuiya on UnsplashUp to $50M per projectTaking to X, DWF Labs Managing Partner Andrei Grachev announced the $250 million fund. He added:”Single ticket size ranged from 10 to 50M$ per a project. Cash + comprehensive support = Moon” In a statement published to the company’s website, DWF Labs outlined that the Liquid Fund initiative aligns with the firm’s commitment to contributing towards real growth within the broader crypto market. It stated: “The fund will provide strategic crypto venture capital and ecosystem support, ensuring sustainable growth for projects that drive real-world adoption and help promote change in the industry.” Initial dealsWork on the fund is already in motion. The company confirmed that it has already invested $11 million into promising blockchain projects as part of the initiative. Furthermore, DWF Labs confirmed that it is on the verge of signing two major investment deals with ticket values of $10 million and $25 million respectively. Beyond those deals, the firm asserts that other investment deals are in the pipeline. It clarified that the nature of the investment differs from traditional investments insofar as each deal incorporates a full-scale ecosystem growth strategy, devised specifically for the particular needs of each project. Grachev stated that the company believes “that strategic capital, coupled with hands-on ecosystem development, is the key to unlocking the next wave of growth for the industry.” Key aspects being considered by the company when formulating ecosystem growth strategies relative to targeted blockchain projects include public relations (PR) and brand amplification, a comprehensive go-to-market (GTM) strategy, lending markets development and a focus on stablecoin total value locked (TVL), with supporting liquidity and DeFi activity relative to layer-1 and layer-2 projects. Focus on ‘usability and discoverability’Grachev told Cointelegraph that emphasis will be placed on investing in blockchain projects that stand out in terms of “usability and discoverability.” He added that “good technology and utility alone isn’t sufficient,” asserting that "users first need to discover these projects, comprehend their value and develop trust." The DWF Labs managing partner suggested that strategic capital, together with hands-on ecosystem development, is paramount relative to efforts to realize the next iteration of growth within the crypto sector. Up until the end of last year, DWF Labs was headquartered in Singapore and still maintains a presence there. Besides Abu Dhabi, it also has a physical presence in Dubai. Hong Kong, Switzerland, South Korea and the British Virgin Islands (BVI) account for the locations of the remainder of its international offices. While Grachev and his firm can be assumed to have a positive broader view on the cryptocurrency sector given the launch of this latest fund, the DWF Labs managing partner recently pointed to a more immediate potentially bearish trend in the market.

Bitfinex Turkiye Facilitates Zero-Cost Deposits via VakıfBank Partnership

Bitfinex Turkiye Facilitates Zero-Cost Deposits via VakıfBank PartnershipIn a strategic move to bolster its presence in Turkey, cryptocurrency trading platform Bitfinex has introduced a seamless and cost-free method for Turkish customers to deposit Turkish lira directly into their accounts.According to a press release published by the company on Thursday, this integration comes as a result of collaboration between Bitfinex Turkiye and VakıfBank, Turkey’s second largest bank in terms of asset size, and a significant player in the Turkish banking sector.Photo by Meg Jerrard on UnsplashExpanding market accessBitfinex’s Chief Technology Officer, Paolo Ardoino, emphasized the user-centric benefits of this partnership. He stated that Turkish customers can now deposit lira effortlessly and economically, streamlining their access to the cryptocurrency market. This development could potentially aid Bitfinex in expanding its operations within Turkey, which stands as one of the largest markets for leading global crypto exchange Binance. Ardoino stated that the move facilitates “the ability to deposit [lira] seamlessly and cost-effectively.” Additionally, Ardoino maintained that market access was being enabled “by integrating with VakıfBank,” and that “[Bitfinex] is making it easier” for customers to participate.Collaborating with the crypto sectorFounded in the 1950s, VakıfBank has 935 brick-and-mortar branches, a network of over 4,000 ATMs and almost one million point-of-sale (POS) terminals in use. This latest partnership is not the first touch point for the bank when it comes to the crypto sector. It has a similar deal in place with Istanbul-based crypto platform, CoinTR. In that instance, CoinTR customers can deposit or withdraw Turkish lira to or from their CoinTR accounts via VakifBank instantly, 24/7 and with zero fees. The bank has also participated in a blockchain-based trade finance initiative, the Turkish Trade Chain Project. In a press release published by the bank last year, it expressed the belief “that blockchain technology will make data sharing more transparent, traceable, verifiable and controllable by reducing the communication traffic between parties in the foreign trade process that requires many documents.”Partnering with TradFiBy aligning its services with a traditional financial institution, Bitfinex joins the ranks of other industry players like Fidelity, BlackRock, and PayPal, which have demonstrated increasing openness to cryptocurrencies despite the ongoing bear market.Turkey has proven to be an important market for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and USDT, the US dollar stablecoin issued by Bitfinex’s sister company, Tether. Runaway inflation in recent years has led to an outsized interest in decentralized money in the country.Bitfinex’s business in Turkey has not been without its hiccups. Earlier this year, a Wall Street Journal report alleged that Bitfinex Turkiye user accounts had been implicated in terrorist financing. One particular account was alleged to have been used for money laundering purposes by the armed wing of Palestinian militant group, Hamas. This latest initiative follows Bitfinex’s recent announcement of the launch of Bitfinex P2P, a peer-to-peer exchange catering to clients in Argentina, Venezuela, and Colombia. With such expansions and collaborations, the cryptocurrency sector continues to evolve, demonstrating resilience and adaptability in the face of bear market conditions and regulatory challenges.
