Finger Labs Embarks on Web3 Content Distribution Project through NFT Marketplace Xclusive

Finger Labs, the blockchain subsidiary of South Korean digital marketing giant FSN, announced today the launch of a Web3 content distribution project through its non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace Xclusive, according to local news outlet Newsis.

BTS-inspired drama

To make this project a reality, Finger Labs has joined forces with CRB Media in a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing content publishing, promotion, and distribution. Their first collaboration is a drama series called “YOUTH,” which draws inspiration from BTS’ album “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever.” The partnership between the two entities will allow Finger Labs to gain access to CRB Media’s copyrighted content materials and design resources required for effective marketing.

 

NFT marketplace

Xclusive, launched as a beta service last year, serves as a secondary market for NFTs and a launch pad for a wide variety of projects, contributing to the expansion of the NFT sector. In preparation for Xclusive’s official introduction, Finger Labs has been diligently working on developing user-friendly functions to fuel the growth of the Web3 ecosystem. The company explained that the Web3 content distribution project represents a major milestone in the expansion of innovative businesses.

 

Sharing revenues

Finger Labs looks forward to addressing issues faced by traditional content distribution platforms, especially in the wake of the rise of over-the-top (OTT) media services. By leveraging blockchain technology, the Web3 content distribution system will introduce decentralization, enabling network participants to claim their share of revenues. The system will pave the way for decentralized content consumption practices like trading or lending of video access rights, which will be unveiled when the first content YOUTH goes live.

Kim Dong-hoon, CEO of Finger Labs, emphasized that the surge in popularity of OTT platforms has presented challenges for content distributors. In response, Finger Labs aims to utilize new technologies to reshape content distribution, nurturing a new cultural landscape. Kim expressed excitement over their first collaboration, YOUTH, whose global recognition will provide momentum to the company’s initiative.

OKX Enters Final Stages of Securing VASP License in Hong KongSeychelles-headquartered cryptocurrency exchange OKX is on the verge of securing its virtual asset service provider (VASP) license in Hong Kong, with approval expected as early as June 2024.That’s according to Li Zhikai, OKX’s Global Chief Commercial Officer, who, in a recent interview with Infocast, shed light on the exchange’s preparations, including collaborations with banks and other related technological integrations.Photo by Simon Zhu on UnsplashThe Road to a VASP LicenseObtaining a VASP license in Hong Kong is no easy feat. Regulatory requirements impose a 30% cap on investors’ crypto investments, ensuring they do not risk more than one-third of their net income.Furthermore, the Hong Kong regulator has implemented stringent crypto asset storage protocols, mandating that crypto exchanges securely store 98% of their crypto assets in cold wallets. Additionally, they must provide insurance and compensation arrangements to protect clients’ interests.Cost has been another issue. In June it emerged that Web3 businesses have been shelling out anywhere between 20 million and 200 million Hong Kong dollars ($2.55 million and $25.5 million) in order to see out the licensing application process.Alongside these licensing difficulties, Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) issued a warning last month aimed at unregistered crypto businesses engaging in “improper practices” within the Chinese autonomous territory.OKX’s remarkable growthWith OKX having reported growth within the Hong Kong market earlier this year, pointing to the onboarding of over 10,000 new users in just one month, it’s likely that licensing is both worthwhile and necessary for the firm despite the difficulties in obtaining it. In March the exchange established OKX Hong Kong, a local entity, with the primary objective of securing a VASP license and operating as a virtual asset trading platform within the city.Hong Kong’s decision to open its doors to retail investors as of June 1 generated significant interest, with more than 80 foreign and Mainland China-based crypto companies expressing their intent to establish a presence in Hong Kong and obtain local licenses. Among these firms are Gate.io, Huobi, CoinEx, and Interactive Brokers.Expanding global reachNotably, OKX has been actively acquiring licenses in various jurisdictions worldwide as part of its strategic expansion plan. The exchange secured a Minimal Viable Product (MVP) license from the Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) in June. This licensing milestone followed the establishment of a new office at the Dubai World Trade Center by OKX.Before venturing into the Middle East, OKX took steps to obtain a French digital asset service provider (DASP) license in May, aiming to position France as its regional hub in Europe. To facilitate this, OKX established a local subsidiary, OKX France. The application and registration process with the French regulator is expected to enable OKX to operate in full compliance with European regulations.Hong Kong embarked on its journey to become a crypto-friendly jurisdiction over the course of the past 12 months, but particularly so when it unveiled its licensing framework for cryptocurrency exchanges catering to retail customers earlier this year. However, only a handful of platforms, such as HashKey and OSL, managed to secure licenses for offering retail crypto trading services. Others, including Huobi and Gate.io, are still awaiting that regulatory nod.

Japan’s Cryptoasset Group Proposes Self-Regulatory Reforms for IEO SystemThe Japan Cryptoasset Business Association (JCBA) has revealed a preliminary draft advocating for reforms in self-regulation to bolster the soundness of the initial exchange offering (IEO) system. This draft has been submitted to the Japan Virtual and Crypto Assets Exchange Association (JVCEA).IEOs serve as a mechanism enabling various enterprises to accrue funds and broaden their user base by orchestrating token sales on cryptocurrency exchanges for Web3 projects. This fundraising method holds the potential to enhance trust as crypto exchanges, supervised by the Japanese Financial Services Agency, undertake evaluations of project feasibility and maintain ongoing oversight.Photo by Takashi Miyazaki on UnsplashPositive regulatory developmentsThe ameliorating regulatory landscape is also a positive development, highlighted by this year’s tax law amendment, which grants exemptions to enterprises’ self-issued tokens from year-end corporate taxation. In Japan, four IEOs have been conducted so far, with the inaugural IEO amassing over 900 million yen (approximately $6 million). The cumulative amount from the four IEOs has surpassed 4.4 billion yen. However, given that the IEO is a relatively nascent fundraising method, improvements in token price stability and operational modalities are required to ensure that businesses and users can engage with it confidently.Enhanced user protectionAgainst this backdrop, JCBA, an organization comprised of various enterprises involving virtual assets and Web3, has been discussing the direction of the IEO system from a corporate viewpoint since May of this year. Establishing price stabilization measures and selling restrictions within the Japanese IEO system will contribute to user protection by allowing investors to manage their assets under domestic regulations. JCBA stated that users will find domestic exchanges more secure in comparison to foreign ones.As this proposal represents an initial draft, deliberated and formulated only within the JCBA, the group intends to consult and assess the feasibility of the self-regulatory rules with each pertinent organization as necessary.Four key pointsThe document submitted by JCBA to JVCEA presented four key points concerning the IEO. Pertaining to pricing, it suggested the diversification of calculation methods customized to each project and the specification of price-related disclaimers. On liquidity, it posited that liquidity objectives should be established at the time of listing, and an environment conducive to securing liquidity should be developed. JCBA also pointed out the necessity of establishing rules for price stabilization measures at the time of listing. Finally, regarding selling restrictions, it was noted that both token issuers and exchanges should adhere to a minimum three-month lock-up period for tokens.
