Bitmain to Launch Filecoin Token Mining Machines

Web3 & Enterprise·July 22, 2023, 2:16 AM

Bitmain, the well-known Chinese manufacturer of Bitcoin mining machines, has made a significant announcement that marks its entry into the Filecoin ecosystem.

FIL token mining

According to that announcement made by the company on social media on Friday, the company is set to launch FIL token mining machines, which are expected to have a hash rate of up to 4,300T each and will be available for purchase at $38,888 per unit.

Filecoin, created by Protocol Labs, was originally designed as a blockchain-based collaborative digital storage and data redemption solution. As an open-source, public cryptocurrency and digital remittance system, Filecoin has garnered significant attention in the market.

Delegated staking

Along with the mining machine development, Bitmain has introduced a delegated staking service with a low monthly fee of 0.5%. This service offers traders an opportunity to earn more through staking with minimal computational energy. Delegated staking allows users to delegate their staking rights to validators or staking pools, enabling them to partake in the rewards generated by these validators.

According to a recent report by crypto market intelligence firm Messari, Filecoin’s data storage market continued to grow in Q2, 2023. Active data storage deals grew 64% when compared with the previous quarter. That deal flow resulted in increased revenue from fees, which was up 91%. Further development of the Filecoin protocol resulted in the recent introduction of the Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM). That runtime environment for smart contracts has enabled new use cases, including liquid staking, decentralized computing, and perpetual storage.

Bitmain’s venture into the Filecoin ecosystem not only supports the development of FIL token mining machines but also offers hope for FIL token holders who experienced losses. The FIL unit price peaked at $190 during the 2021 crypto bull market. The company’s involvement has positively influenced Filecoin’s price.

Meanwhile Bitmain continues to be a major player in the crypto mining equipment space. 2021 has not been without its blemishes for the company though, as in April the Beijing-based company was fined $3.7 million by the Chinese authorities for a violation of Chinese tax regulations.

Bitmain hashrate dominance

Earlier this month, US bitcoin miner TeraWulf purchased 18,500 mining machines from Bitmain, with a view to deploying them at its 43 MW Lake Mariner mining facility in New York State in the US. The deal had a value of $75 million.

A recently published report by crypto intelligence firm Coinmetrics outlined that the majority of the Bitcoin hashrate is being processed by Bitmain’s S19 miner model. Three Bitmain miner models are responsible for 76% of the entire Bitcoin network’s hashrate, the report states.

Hong Kong securities group proposes ICOs as growth opportunity

Hong Kong securities group proposes ICOs as growth opportunityKey stakeholders in Hong Kong’s financial world are contemplating a transformative shift in the Chinese autonomous territory’s digital asset strategy that concerns furthering initial coin offerings (ICOs).Photo by Qinyi Lian on UnsplashRoom for improvementIn a recent letter signed by Chen Zhihua, President of the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Professionals Association (HKSFPA) and published to the HKSFPA website on Wednesday, the introduction of an ICO mechanism as a potential catalyst for the city’s economic revival has been proposed. The letter, which provided the HKSFPA’s “opinions on the 2024–2025 budget,” included the ICO suggestion as recommendation №10 on a list of various proposals. The suggestion comes amid ongoing efforts to navigate the economic challenges posed by the pandemic. Zhihua acknowledges the developmental approach taken by Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee where financial sector strategy is concerned, but emphasizes the industry group’s belief in the room for improvement that exists to stimulate Hong Kong’s financial sector further.Formalizing ICOsFormalizing ICOs in Hong Kong could establish a supportive environment for crypto startups and investors seeking regulated and secure opportunities. The proposal aligns with a broader call for government engagement in economic recovery and policy-making, emphasizing a collaborative approach toward the crypto sector. This inclusive stance signals a forward-thinking perspective that could lead to more supportive policies and frameworks, fostering a conducive environment for crypto innovation and growth.Reflecting on the history of ICOs, the letter acknowledges the fundraising method’s evolution since the attention garnered by the Mastercoin ICO in 2013 and Ethereum’s significant milestone in 2014. The ICO boom of 2017 saw projects like EOS and Tezos raising substantial funds, accompanied by both enthusiasm for fundraising ease and concerns about investor protection due to minimal regulation.Fraud concernsWhile the ICO boom faced regulatory scrutiny and witnessed instances of fraud and scams, a progressive approach by financial regions such as Hong Kong could reshape the global perception of ICOs. The letter suggests that, under favorable terms, ICOs could play a pivotal role in revitalizing the digital asset landscape.Zhihua underscores the importance of addressing potential challenges by urgently reviewing and enhancing anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorist financing legislation. This cautious approach aims to ensure that ICOs in Hong Kong adhere to established frameworks, avoiding the pitfalls associated with unregulated fundraising. While that’s the HKSFPA’s position, the initial flurry of ICOs a number of years ago involved many projects proposed by scammers and fraudsters. At the time, the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) recognized the development as “downright fraud” and put pressure on exchanges to delist many tokens. One other related element that the letter proposes is in integrating environmental, social and governance (ESG) and Islamic finance elements into investment immigration policies. This forward-thinking approach reflects a growing awareness of ethical and sustainable investment practices that could potentially position Hong Kong to set new standards for responsible investment.

Fake Security Tokens Linked to HD Hyundai Oilbank in Circulation

Fake Security Tokens Linked to HD Hyundai Oilbank in CirculationHD Hyundai Oilbank, one of South Korea’s leading refiners, said Wednesday that a counterfeit security token dubbed “HOBT” claiming affiliation to the company has been circulating online. The token is allegedly based on old stock certificates under the company’s former name, Hyundai Oil Refinery, as the underlying assets, though the company had changed its name to HD Hyundai Oilbank back in 2002. Both the token and the underlying asset are invalid and have no relation at all to HD Hyundai Oilbank, the company emphasized, so investors must exercise caution.Fraudulent promotionEntities that are giving away or selling HBOT tokens are attracting investors by promoting a one-on-one exchange of the tokens for old Hyundai Oil Refinery stock certificates. They are also promising to grant shareholder rights through blockchain technology as well as interest payments of 4% every month for a total of 24% over six months.Fraudulent activities like these have recently been on the rise following the legalization of security tokens and the formal issuance of a select few tokens.Investigative measuresThe Incheon Metropolitan Police is currently conducting an investigation into the case. Notably, the old Hyundai Oil Refinery stock certificates that the involved entities are claiming to be underlying assets have been proven to be fake in over ten court rulings. Although owners of these old stock certificates had filed lawsuits against the company related to shareholder registration renewals since the late 2000s, all of them had lost their cases.Photo by Tingey Injury Law Firm on UnsplashPast events resurfacingThis recent circulation of the forged HOBT tokens is attributed to employees of a disposal company who pocketed the invalid stock certificates and certificate papers, rather than disposing of them as they were required to do.In January 2002, HD Hyundai Oilbank had hired a company to dispose of documents — including those related to the old stock certificates — that had lost their validity during the process of attracting and increasing foreign capital.“In May of that year, we started receiving frequent inquiries about the stock certificates. We filed a legal complaint against the employees and conspirators of the disposal company for illegally distributing the certificates (including the stock certificate papers), and they were subsequently punished for theft and fraud,” the company explained.

The UAE alone experienced a remarkable 400% increase in registered crypto businesses over two years, driving a surge in global digital asset trading by 10%. Moreover, blockchain-related educational programs have tripled in the region, which contributes to 8% of the overall mining hash rate. The company aims to scale its Middle East team further, with plans to hire 30 to 60 more professionals over the next two years.Bitget is not alone in recognizing the potential of the Middle Eastern market. Binance is also eyeing the Middle East, with Binance Dubai poised to become the primary focus for the company’s development efforts, given regulatory challenges in Europe and the US.Global expansion strategyBitget’s expansion into the Middle East is part of its broader global scaling strategy. The company’s move to the Middle East showcases its determination to tap into new markets and solidify its position as a global player in the cryptocurrency exchange landscape. There’s been a lot going on at Bitget in recent months, in addition to these regional expansion plans. In May the company announced a corporate social responsibility project named “Blockchain4Youth,” cleverly identifying the importance of connecting with the younger demographic which is far more likely to drive crypto and blockchain adoption.Earlier this month it launched a crypto loans product offering while last week it provided transparency via its proof of reserves initiative, demonstrating a 223% level of reserves and outlining that the company is debt free.
