Fake Security Tokens Linked to HD Hyundai Oilbank in Circulation

Policy & Regulation·August 24, 2023, 9:57 AM

HD Hyundai Oilbank, one of South Korea’s leading refiners, said Wednesday that a counterfeit security token dubbed “HOBT” claiming affiliation to the company has been circulating online. The token is allegedly based on old stock certificates under the company’s former name, Hyundai Oil Refinery, as the underlying assets, though the company had changed its name to HD Hyundai Oilbank back in 2002. Both the token and the underlying asset are invalid and have no relation at all to HD Hyundai Oilbank, the company emphasized, so investors must exercise caution.

Fraudulent promotion

Entities that are giving away or selling HBOT tokens are attracting investors by promoting a one-on-one exchange of the tokens for old Hyundai Oil Refinery stock certificates. They are also promising to grant shareholder rights through blockchain technology as well as interest payments of 4% every month for a total of 24% over six months.

Fraudulent activities like these have recently been on the rise following the legalization of security tokens and the formal issuance of a select few tokens.

Investigative measures

The Incheon Metropolitan Police is currently conducting an investigation into the case. Notably, the old Hyundai Oil Refinery stock certificates that the involved entities are claiming to be underlying assets have been proven to be fake in over ten court rulings. Although owners of these old stock certificates had filed lawsuits against the company related to shareholder registration renewals since the late 2000s, all of them had lost their cases.

Past events resurfacing

This recent circulation of the forged HOBT tokens is attributed to employees of a disposal company who pocketed the invalid stock certificates and certificate papers, rather than disposing of them as they were required to do.

In January 2002, HD Hyundai Oilbank had hired a company to dispose of documents — including those related to the old stock certificates — that had lost their validity during the process of attracting and increasing foreign capital.

“In May of that year, we started receiving frequent inquiries about the stock certificates. We filed a legal complaint against the employees and conspirators of the disposal company for illegally distributing the certificates (including the stock certificate papers), and they were subsequently punished for theft and fraud,” the company explained.

Korean blockchain firms Creder and ITCEN partner with Malaysia STO exchange Green-X

South Korea’s blockchain venture Creder and IT solution company ITCEN Group (ITCEN) announced today their partnership with Green-X, a Malaysia-based exchange, local media outlet Decenter reported. Through the partnership, the three companies plan to launch a security token offering (STO) business, introducing tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) to investors. Creder is a joint venture founded in 2022 by ITCEN and blockchain service developer BPMG.  The planned business aims to tokenize various RWAs – including jewelry, real estate, rare earth, antique goods – and issue them in the form of NFTs, which will then be fractionalized and traded on Goldstation, the gold-pegged coin (GPC)-centered DeFi platform developed by Creder. Photo by Jingming Pan on UnsplashThe initial project of the RWA business would be to offer trading services for Dignity gold tokens (DIGNITY) on Goldstation, a digital token issued by Dignity Gold LLC. The company owns a gold mine valued at over $6 billion in Nevada, U.S., according to data from Green-X. As of March 26, gold reserves yet to be excavated from the mine reportedly stand at 3.44 million ounces. Green-X, a Malaysia STO exchange accredited by Sharia certificate The Malaysia-based STO exchange Green-X is a wholly owned subsidiary of Greenpro Captial Corp., a company listed on Nasdaq. In February 2022, Green-X received an STO exchange license along with Sharia certificate, a proof of compliance that is only given to firms that follow the Islamic law, Sharia. This religious certificate is known to serve as a significant criterion for Islamic investors.  James Lim, CEO of Creder, said that the company aims to expand its business to the global market by further introducing more RWAs in cooperation with Green-X.

Bitmain’s Latest Air-Cooled Antminer Set to Ship in Q1 2024

Bitmain’s Latest Air-Cooled Antminer Set to Ship in Q1 2024Bitmain, the prominent Chinese Bitcoin mining equipment manufacturer, has officially unveiled its latest innovation, the Antminer T21.Photo by Traxer on UnsplashHeat toleranceThe company confirmed in an announcement made on Thursday that the state-of-the-art air-cooled Bitcoin miner will ship during the first quarter of 2024. The Antminer T21 is expected to make waves in the world of cryptocurrency mining given that it can withstand scorching temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius.During a facility tour, the firm tweeted out on Friday: “Although it is so hot here, ANTMINER is still running stable!”The context of the comment relates to an installation of the new miner’s predecessor at a Moonwalk Systems facility in the arid heat of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Moonwalk is utilizing water cooling to overcome the local conditions. However, it’s in environments like this one that Bitmain is likely to envisage its latest Antminer performing well.Energy efficiencyAnother standout feature of the Antminer T21 is its energy efficiency. With a stellar energy efficiency ratio of 19 joules per terahash (J/TH), it outpaces its predecessor, the Bitcoin Miner S21 Hyd, which offers an energy efficiency of 16.0 J/TH. This efficiency means miners can maximize their returns while minimizing their energy costs. Additionally, the Antminer T21 boasts an impressive processing power of 190 terahashes per second (TH/s), a crucial factor in the competitive world of Bitcoin mining. The compatibility of the Antminer T21 with the SHA256 mining algorithm, used in the proof-of-work (PoW) consensus mechanism for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, and Bitcoin SV (BSV), adds to its appeal.Notably, Bitmain has extended a helping hand to pre-order buyers of the Antminer T21 by offering Bitmain’s Price Protection Plan. This plan, available until November 25, aims to support miners in times of cryptocurrency market volatility. The plan shields customers from price fluctuations in Bitcoin for periods of one, three, or six months.Company difficultiesFounded in Beijing in 2013, Bitmain swiftly rose to prominence as a global leader in producing Bitcoin (BTC) mining ASICs. However, the company faced internal turmoil due to a power struggle between its co-founders, Wu Jihan and Ketuan Zhan. The situation was eventually resolved in 2021, with Jihan Wu stepping down from his roles as chairman and CEO of Bitmain and selling his ownership share to Zhan for $600 million.ASIC miner manufacturers like Bitmain have also had to grapple with the backdrop of a challenging market environment that has seen plummeting prices paid for mining equipment over the past two years.Bitmain has faced scrutiny regarding its treatment of employees. Recent reports from local sources and Bitmain employees revealed that the company issued a notification in September indicating negative operating cash flow. In response to these financial challenges, Bitmain delayed the disbursement of a portion of its employees’ September salaries, raising concerns about the financial stability of the organization. In April of this year, it emerged that the Chinese authorities had imposed a fine on the company due to tax irregularities.
