Korean Game Developers to Benefit from Higher NFT Trading Volume

Korean game companies preparing to launch web 3.0 games are expected to benefit from the higher non-fungible token (NFT) trading volume, according to Korean news outlet Financial News.

A report from decentralized app analytics platform DappRadar states that the NFT trading volume reached $4.7 billion in the first quarter this year, up 137.04% from the previous quarter. This volume is the highest since the second quarter of 2022.

This year’s strong NFT market so far is good news for Korean game developers, which were negatively affected by a slowdown in the crypto industry last year due to various factors, including the Terra USD collapse and the bankruptcy of crypto exchange FTX.

In fact, many game and content companies are expanding their ecosystems by tokenizing their game items and intellectual property (IP) rights.

Nexon

One such example is Nexon, the developer of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game MapleStory. Based on its IP rights, Nexon is creating the MapleStory Universe, an NFT-based blockchain ecosystem. The MapleStory Universe will enable trading of NFTs, which users can obtain while hunting or accomplishing quests. Its first major project, a personal computer game named “MapleStory N,” will be launched to attract gamers worldwide.

Netmarble

Netmarble, another Korean game company, will launch Modoo Marble 2: Metaworld on Wednesday for global gamers. The popular mobile board game will be rolled out on the MBX ecosystem operated by Netmarble’s blockchain subsidiary Marblex. Participation in the board game and involvement in the Metaworld would allow users to earn Meta Cash as rewards, which can then be swapped for different virtual assets. The trade of buildings and land within the game would likely be facilitated through the use of NFTs.

Com2uS Holdings

Cultural content company Com2uS Holdings is also making its own efforts to expand its blockchain ecosystem. Its subsidiary Com2uS Platform recently forged a partnership with animation firm Daewon Media to strengthen its NFT business based on Daewon’s popular IP rights.

A game industry official said NFT trading can address issues that caused concerns for gamers who doubted the legitimacy and price of items they traded. The official further elaborated that incorporating elements like NFTs and the metaverse would enhance the gaming experience and excitement for gaming enthusiasts.

3AC Co-founder offers unusual perspective on Singapore prison time

Su Zhu, the co-founder of the now-defunct Singaporean crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital (3AC), raised some eyebrows within the crypto community recently, having shared unconventional thoughts on his time spent in a Singaporean prison. Zhu's arrest took place in October of last year in Singapore, where he was apprehended while attempting to flee. Liquidators of 3AC had tipped off police in the city-state that Zhu was going to Changi airport, a number of days after they had secured a court order against him for failing to cooperate with their efforts to wind up the company. Alongside his business partner, Kyle Davies, Zhu was sentenced to four months in prison for contempt of court following a committal order.Photo by Christian Lue on Unsplash‘Enjoyable experience’Clips from an unreleased podcast were published on social media on Monday, in which Zhu referred to his time in prison as an "enjoyable experience overall." In the video podcast, Zhu expressed gratitude for his incarceration, even going so far as to claim that he had the "best sleep" of his life while behind bars. Zhu suggested that everyone should have the opportunity to experience prison at least once, believing it to be a beneficial and enlightening experience. He provided insights into his daily life during incarceration, emphasizing the simplicity of entertainment and drawing parallels with activities from "ancient days." The disgraced crypto boss discussed the routines and privileges within the prison facility, including access to ample reading material, opportunities for exercise and a structured diet. He highlighted the ability to read books and engage in physical activities like push-ups during his time in prison. What particularly impressed Zhu was the quality of sleep in the prison environment. He also found a sense of connection with his ancestors through the use of mats instead of beds. Crypto community responseCrypto users on various platforms responded with mixed feelings toward Zhu's philosophical insights. Some viewed his perspective with skepticism, while others found humor in the apparent contrast between his experiences and traditional notions of imprisonment. Taking to the X social media platform, pseudonymous crypto restructuring lawyer "Wassielawyer" wrote:”Singapore prison is widely regarded as one of the shittiest prisons you can find in a first world country. And the man made it sound like a 5-star mindfulness retreat everyone needs to go on in order to revitalize mind, body and soul. Man is blessed with a superpower…” The hedge fund collapsed in June 2022, resulting in over $3.5 billion in losses for investors, making it one of the largest hedge-fund trading losses ever. Zhu and fellow 3AC founder Kyle Davies have been active online over the course of the past year, despite their whereabouts largely remaining unknown during that time. The duo have launched a new crypto exchange and bankruptcy claims platform called Open Exchange (OPNX). However, their troubles continue, as liquidator Teneo seeks to recover $1.3 billion directly from the founders, alleging misuse of investor funds after 3AC became insolvent. In September, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) prohibited both from floating regulated investments for nine years. Teneo has estimated a 46% recovery rate in respect of creditor claims.

Regulator lifts investment cap for real estate-backed tokens in Thailand

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Thailand has made a significant adjustment to the rules governing digital token investments. The SEC has decided to eliminate the investment ceiling previously imposed on retail investors participating in initial coin offerings (ICOs) tied to real estate and infrastructure.Photo by Colton Duke on UnsplashFostering digital economy growth and developmentThe announcement, specifying the revised criteria, was officially published in the Royal Gazette, with the measure taking effect on Tuesday. This move allows retail investors greater access to ICOs involving tokens backed by real estate or linked to real estate revenues. The SEC emphasized that, in addition to ensuring appropriate investor protection, its role extends to encouraging the utilization of technology and innovation in fundraising. The objective is to foster sustainable growth in the capital market and support the development of the digital economy. Prior to this adjustment, retail investors faced a restriction of a 300,000 baht ($8,450) investment limit per offering concerning digital tokens backed by infrastructure or real estate. The SEC's decision to remove this limitation aligns with the goal of managing product risks effectively while promoting a more inclusive environment for retail investors in the realm of digital token investments. Facilitating custodial walletsFurthermore, the SEC is currently undertaking a review of criteria to facilitate the establishment of custodial wallet provider businesses for digital asset operators with common major shareholders. This initiative aims to enhance the regulatory framework and provide guidelines for businesses involved in digital asset storage. Custodial wallets will be permitted in Thailand if operated by publicly traded companies with experience in digital asset storage. All Thai citizens will have a touch point with digital wallets shortly under a government program, a $14 billion digital handout scheme, which has been approved to distribute digital currency to the public through digital wallets. DASP approvalsAs part of its supervisory role, the SEC will also be responsible for granting permissions to digital asset service providers (DASPs) to expand into new business lines. Digital asset operators seeking to diversify their operations are required to obtain approval from the SEC before proceeding. This measure is intended to ensure the effective oversight of such businesses and maintain the credibility of the digital asset industry by preventing illegal operations. It’s likely no coincidence that tokenized real estate is being embraced in Thailand, given the background of Thailand’s recently installed Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin. In 2021, Thavisin’s company played a role in funding crypto-friendly investment management firm XSpring Capital to the tune of $225 million. His firm also introduced a real estate-backed ICO in conjunction with XSpring. While Thailand’s SEC is moving forward with tokenized real estate, it doesn’t feel the same way about exchange-traded funds (ETFs). In the wake of the recent approval of spot bitcoin ETFs in the United States, the Thai SEC responded by stating that it currently has no plans to allow asset managers to launch similar products within the Thai market.
