Report: Asia Set to Dominate Web3 Gaming Market

Markets·April 14, 2023, 2:16 AM

A new report has revealed that Asia is poised to dominate the growing Web3 gaming market, accounting for as much as 80% of all players. The study, conducted by Japanese firm Pacific Meta and DappRadar, found that the region already accounts for 55% of the global gaming population, with 1.7 billion players.

The report identified that the role-playing genre is the most popular in Asia, with games such as Final Fantasy, Phantasy Star Online and Genshin Impact ranking highly.

Legal restrictions

The research noted that legal restrictions on gaming are prevalent across the region, with China only allowing gamers under 18 to play for one hour a day and blockchain games all but banned in South Korea. Despite these restrictions, the report argued that Nexon’s Web3 play with MapleStory Universe and Square Enix’s upcoming Web3 game Symbiogenesis are two examples of crypto games gaining traction in the East. Both games will use the Polygon blockchain, currently the most preferred network for Web3 gaming from a game studio perspective.

The report also concluded that Web3 gaming is a “natural” fit for the Asian market because of the types of games to which the market is accustomed. It argues that as Web3 games become more focused on gameplay over financials, Western and Eastern audiences will come to expect similar experiences.

A developing understanding of Web3 games

To better understand the market, Pacific Meta surveyed over 1,000 adults in Japan and found that 40% knew about blockchain games. Among those who knew about such games, nearly 57% said Web3 games “seemed interesting”, while roughly 10% said they did not seem interesting. Notably, about 33% said “neither”, suggesting they were perhaps unsure about Web3 games and hadn’t yet formed an opinion on them.

When asked about the types of blockchain games they would be interested in, 773 out of the 1,030 surveyed said that they would like a game to be free-to-play, and that initial cost was an important feature to them. 538 said that they would like the game to be playable on a mobile phone. Player earnings, game quality, consoles, and famous IP scored lower on the list.

Long road to mainstream adoption

The report highlights that the nascent industry still has a ways to go before it sees mainstream adoption. Nevertheless, big brands such as Razer and FIFA are doubling down on Web3 gaming projects. With the Asian market poised to take a dominant role in Web3 gaming, developers will need to tailor their offerings to suit the preferences of the region’s gamers.

The Web3 gaming market in Asia is enormous and is expected to dominate the global market, with Japan a key market for growth. Developers will need to focus on the role-playing genre and create free-to-play mobile games to appeal to gamers in the region. As the Web3 gaming market continues to grow, and blockchain technology advances, it is likely that we will see more games and platforms targeting Asian gamers in the coming years.

Crypto.com Complies with UK FCA’s New Digital Asset Rules

Crypto.com Complies with UK FCA’s New Digital Asset RulesWhile some Asian crypto platforms are struggling to comply with the United Kingdom’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) regarding new marketing-related rules that took effect on October 8, Singapore’s Crypto.com has confirmed its successful compliance. The firm is registered as FORIS DAX UK LIMITED on the FCA website.Photo by Paul Fiedler on UnsplashContinuing support for UK customersAs a result, UK customers can continue to access Crypto.com’s products and services without disruption. The company emphasized its commitment to strengthening its platform and presence in the UK market. Crypto.com stated that it fully supports measures aimed at enhancing consumer safety and security in the cryptocurrency industry. The company also expressed its ongoing cooperation with UK and international regulators to foster consumer confidence in the crypto sector.Effective from October 8, the FCA’s updated guidelines mandate that all crypto firms marketing their services to UK consumers must register with the FCA and adhere to relevant standards concerning risk disclosures and marketing practices.Regulatory compliance challengesWhile Crypto.com has managed to remain compliant, that’s not the case for all large and well-known crypto platforms. The FCA recently expanded its scrutiny of digital currency exchanges by adding Huobi and KuCoin to its list of unapproved and unregistered firms. The FCA alerted clients to the fact that these service providers were offering various crypto services in the UK without obtaining regulatory approval. This development follows a recent warning from the FCA, which highlighted several other crypto-focused companies.Binance’s compliance difficulties2023 has seen global crypto platform Binance struggle with regulatory compliance in various markets worldwide. In some jurisdictions where it has either decided to withdraw from the market or been asked to leave, the firm has taken the approach of still maintaining exposure to that market by establishing a partnership with a locally registered firm.In the UK, Binance has partnered with Rebuildingsociety.com, a peer-to-peer lending platform. However, its local partner has fallen foul of the UK's FCA. On Tuesday, the UK regulator issued a notice clarifying that Rebuildingsociety.com was not authorized to “approve the content of any financial promotion for a Qualifying Cryptoasset for communication by an unauthorized person.”Dubai-headquartered crypto exchange Bybit is another crypto business that has struggled with the FCA's new regulatory requirements. Last month the exchange denied reports that it was preparing to leave the UK market due to the new strict marketing rules. The following week the exchange confirmed that it would be leaving the UK market, ahead of the introduction of the new crypto marketing regulations.Crypto.com had received registration approval from the FCA in August 2022. At the time, CEO Kris Marsazalek stated:“We are committed to the UK market and we look forward to developing our platform and presence in the UK further by expanding our offering to customers, while continuing to work with regulators.”In June, the firm acquired a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license in its home market of Singapore from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). Around the same timeframe, the firm received a minimum viable product (MVP) license from the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) in Dubai.

FPG Halts Withdrawals Following Hack

FPG Halts Withdrawals Following HackFloating Point Group (FPG), a prominent crypto prime brokerage platform, has temporarily halted trading, deposits, and withdrawals following a cyber security incident that occurred on Sunday.Photo by Thom Milkovic on UnsplashIncident responseFPG, headquartered in Singapore while maintaining a base in Hoboken, New Jersey in the United States, manages over $50 billion in assets. The firm took immediate action upon discovering the incident by engaging third-party forensics experts and law enforcement agencies. The company acknowledged the problem publicly via a tweet thread on Twitter on Wednesday. FPG stated that the company has locked all third-party accounts and secured its wallets while it investigates the extent and details of the breach. Although the full extent of the loss is still under investigation, the current estimate stands at approximately $15 million to $20 million in lost cryptocurrencies.Investigative cooperationIn response to the incident, FPG is collaborating with the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, regulatory bodies, and Chainalysis to comprehend the nature of the attack and initiate asset recovery measures. As the investigation involving those entities is ongoing, specific details are not being disclosed at this stage, but FPG has pledged to provide updates as new information becomes available. The cyber security incident comes six months after FPG obtained a SOC 2 certification, which verifies the implementation of robust security, privacy, and control measures by service organizations to ensure the reliable handling of sensitive data and systems.Originally founded in 2018 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, FPG functions as both a crypto prime brokerage platform and an agency trading desk for asset managers, offering access to liquidity across various markets. In December, FPG announced that its blockchain foundation customers accounted for 5% of the total treasury management market.Backed by prominent investors such as Coinbase Ventures, Anthony Scaramucci of SkyBridge Capital, and Naval Ravikant, the founder of AngelList, FPG has raised a total of $12 million in funding thus far.In August of the previous year, FPG successfully registered as a virtual asset service provider (VASP) in the Cayman Islands. This registration ensured the secure custody of customer assets and safeguarded them from the company’s creditors in the unlikely event of bankruptcy.Broader crypto issuesIt has not been a good couple of weeks for the crypto sector relative to hacks and platform withdrawal pauses. Within the past twenty four hours, two Asia-based crypto lending platforms, Haru Invest and Delio, have suspended withdrawals. In those cases, the issue is suspected to relate to platform contagion and solvency issues.Earlier this month, the Atomic Wallet platform was hacked despite the understanding that the project offered self-custodial wallets. Originally, the loss was estimated at $35 million, but more recent reports are now estimating that figure to be in excess of $100 million. As FPG continues its efforts to mitigate the aftermath of the cyber attack, industry participants eagerly await further updates and measures undertaken by the company to recover from this incident and restore trust among its clients.
