“This cooperation lays the foundation for Metawon Campus to establish itself as a practical university education platform. Through the integration of ABC Wallet, we will strive to build it into a global education metaverse based on the fundamental standards of stability, convenience and scalability,” said Hyun Dae-won, Dean of Sogang University’s Graduate School of Metaverse.

Advancing security and accessibility

This project mainly entails the integration of AhnLab Blockchain Company’s digital ABC Wallet within the platform. As a non-custodial wallet, this service uses multi-party computation to support multiple blockchain networks including Ethereum, Polygon and Klaytn. This integration has the potential to enhance the security and usability of Metawon Campus, encouraging international students to participate. To further boost security, the platform will also utilize non-transferrable SoulBound tokens (SBTs) issued by ABC Wallet. By providing services in multiple languages, the platform will be available to a wider user base as well.

Comprehensive cooperation

In addition to technological collaborations, the two parties agreed to work on R&D and marketing as well as content creation aimed at enhancing participant engagement and accessibility to education.

Kang Suk-kyun, CEO of AhnLab Blockchain Company, emphasized the role that ABC Wallet would play in helping international students experience a more secure and liberal virtual environment on Metawon Campus. He went on to reaffirm the company’s efforts to contribute to the popularization of the metaverse and the advancement of blockchain technology.

Indonesia sets out crypto exchange registration requirement

In response to the expanding demand for cryptocurrencies in Indonesia, the government has laid down a directive, requiring crypto exchanges operating within the Southeast Asian country to register with the recently inaugurated Commodity Future Exchange (CFX).Photo by Bisma Mahendra on UnsplashMandatory requirementThe CFX was established back in July as the world's first national bourse exclusively dedicated to digital assets. The national exchange has been modeled to replicate exchanges in traditional markets like the NASDAQ, but in this case, focusing entirely on digital assets. Under regulations introduced in 2019 by the Indonesian Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency (Bappebti), crypto exchanges in the country must seek authorization. Even exchanges operating legally since 2014 fall under the category of "prospective crypto exchanges" and must undergo a rigorous process to gain recognition as legitimate entities affiliated with the CFX. Safeguarding investorsThis regulatory initiative aims to create a secure environment for crypto investors while simultaneously serving as a platform for tracking digital asset transactions for taxation purposes. Beyond the regulatory oversight, registering with the CFX also acts as a gateway for the Indonesian government to monitor cryptocurrency transactions for taxation purposes. The authorization process involves registration with self-regulatory organizations (SROs) like the CFX, followed by scrutiny by Bappebti to assess the company's suitability to operate. Only after meeting all requirements can a crypto exchange be issued a crypto exchange license (PFAK). Failure to complete the new procedures and registrations within the specified timeframe, set for Aug. 17, 2024, will result in the inability to operate in Indonesia. Currently, there are 29 prospective crypto exchanges in Indonesia that must obtain authorization to continue their operations. Regulatory oversight change in 2025It is noteworthy that a significant regulatory overhaul in 2025 will shift the oversight of cryptocurrency regulation from Bappebti to Indonesia's Financial Services Authority (OJK). This change could potentially reclassify cryptocurrencies as securities, potentially impacting taxation. While crypto assets are currently subject to Value Added Tax (VAT) and Income Tax (PPh) as commodities, reclassification as securities may lead to a reduction in taxes. In late February, Didid Noordiatmoko, head of Bappebti, announced the nation's intention to launch its state-backed crypto exchange by mid-2023. The exchange will be operated by a private-sector company rather than the government, with private-sector crypto platforms executing trades on the exchange. Crypto adoptionThe surge in demand for cryptocurrencies in Indonesia is evidenced by official data from 2023, indicating that the number of registered crypto traders exceeds that of stock traders. Data published in October outlined that Indonesia has seen a 10.1% year-on-year increase in the number of crypto investors in the country, bringing that figure to 17.79 million citizens. The increase in interest in crypto among Indonesians has not been lost on the country’s politicians as crypto appears to have become an election issue. Gibran Rakabuming Raka, a vice-presidential candidate in the upcoming Indonesian election, expressed the aim to accelerate Indonesia's position as a leader in the digital revolution by cultivating expertise in blockchain and cryptocurrencies.

No Turkish Delight for Crypto Exchange CEO Sentenced to 11,196 Years

No Turkish Delight for Crypto Exchange CEO Sentenced to 11,196 YearsIn a landmark ruling, Faruk Fatih Ozer, the 29-year-old Turkish Founder and CEO of defunct Turkish crypto exchange Thodex, has been sentenced to 11,196 years in prison for orchestrating a massive fraud that left investors out of pocket.Photo by engin akyurt on UnsplashExtradited from AlbaniaBloomberg reported on Friday that Ozer, the mastermind behind the Thodex exchange, fled to Albania in 2021, vanishing along with millions of dollars in investor assets as the exchange suddenly crumbled. His arrest in Albania on an Interpol warrant marked the beginning of a lengthy legal battle. Having spent months on the run, he was finally extradited back to Turkey in June, where he faced charges of money laundering, fraud, and organized crime. During the trial in Istanbul, Ozer defended himself, claiming that his actions did not demonstrate criminal intent. He asserted:“I am smart enough to lead any institution on Earth.”“That is evident in this company I established at the age of 22. I wouldn’t have acted so amateurishly if this were a criminal organization,” he added. Nevertheless, the court found him guilty, along with his sister Serap and brother Guven, who faced the same charges.Lengthy jail termThe sentences handed down were notably long, with the defendants sentenced separately for multiple crimes against 2,027 victims. Following the abolition of the death penalty in 2004, lengthy prison sentences are quite common in Turkey.Prosecutors had initially sought a jaw-dropping 40,562-year prison sentence for Ozer, although the difference would have been purely symbolic when compared with the sentence which was ultimately handed down. The Thodex exchange, founded in 2017, quickly rose to prominence as one of Turkey’s largest cryptocurrency platforms.Ozer’s financial acumen earned him national recognition, and he even cultivated ties with influential pro-government figures. However, the sudden implosion of the Thodex exchange in April 2021 shook the cryptocurrency world. Investor assets vanished, and Ozer went into hiding.Reports initially indicated that Ozer had fled with assets worth $2 billion, but the prosecutor’s indictment put the total losses to Thodex investors at 356 million Turkish liras. The depreciation of the lira and rampant inflation since the exchange’s collapse means that this amount is now equivalent to around $13 million on the international markets.Lagging regulationThe Thodex case serves as a stark reminder of cryptocurrency market risks, given its immature state and the lag in regulators responding to the innovation in order to ensure a safe marketplace for investors.Despite this setback in the development of the crypto ecosystem within Turkey, interest in crypto is stronger than ever. A recent report produced by Seychelles-based crypto exchange KuCoin found that there has been a significant increase in crypto market participants in Turkey over the course of the past 18 months. It’s likely that runaway inflation of the Turkish lira is providing Turks with the motivation to investigate crypto as an alternative.
