Korbit relists blockchain gaming token WEMIX

Policy & Regulation·December 07, 2023, 3:51 AM

Korbit, a major fiat-to-cryptocurrency exchange in South Korea, is relisting WEMIX, a cryptocurrency issued by blockchain gaming company Wemade. Korbit’s decision follows in the footsteps of its local competitors, Coinone and Gopax, who have also recently reinstated WEMIX. The WEMIX token is used to pay transaction fees, stake and vote on governance proposals.

Starting at 1:00 a.m. UTC on Dec. 7, Korbit users gained the ability to create a WEMIX wallet and deposit the token on the exchange. Trading and withdrawals of WEMIX will be enabled at 3:00 p.m. UTC on the same day.

The Korbit exchange only accepts WEMIX deposits originating from the Wemix network. Deposits of WEMIX sent from other blockchain networks, including BNB Beacon Chain, Ethereum and Klaytn, may be processed improperly and carry the risk of becoming irretrievable.

Decision reversal and underlying rationales

Over a year ago, the Digital Asset eXchange Alliance (DAXA), a coalition of the five Korean fiat-to-crypto exchanges — Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit and Gopax — collectively decided to delist WEMIX from all their platforms. This decision was based on several concerns, including unreliable disclosure of the token’s circulating supply, provision of inadequate and misleading information to investors and inconsistencies in the data provided during the explanation period. These issues collectively eroded trust in the company.

However, Korbit has determined that the previously identified issues with WEMIX have been addressed. The exchange observed that the circulating supply of WEMIX has been reduced to a level that aligns with the schedule initially submitted to DAXA. The launch of the WEMIX mainnet rectified the discrepancy where the circulating supply displayed on crypto data platforms like CoinMarketCap was twice the actual figure. Additionally, the collateral that Wemade had deposited in decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol Kokoa Finance has been recovered.

The crypto trading platform also believes that Wemade has resolved the problem of providing misleading information to investors by making corrections to its third-quarter earnings report.

Regarding data fallacies, Korbit holds the view that the game publisher has taken steps to address the inaccuracies in the data previously provided to the alliance. These efforts to reduce uncertainty and fulfill disclosure responsibilities include several measures: Wemade now live-updates the circulating supply of WEMIX and other pertinent details on its official blog. The gaming company has also entrusted the management of its non-circulating WEMIX supply to Ceffu, the sole institutional custodian for Binance, a global crypto exchange. Furthermore, Wemade now makes announcements about token movements whenever they occur.

Restrictions imposed on Gopax

Meanwhile, Korbit stated its commitment to complying with voluntary regulations and common listing guidelines established between DAXA members. This statement is particularly noteworthy in light of the recent developments with Gopax. Gopax faced the three-month suspension of its voting rights from DAXA, following the relisting of WEMIX.

Korean Experts Advocate for Global Crypto Info Exchange to Combat Tax Evasion

Korean Experts Advocate for Global Crypto Info Exchange to Combat Tax EvasionIn a recent event held to discuss the tax regime in South Korea, law professors offered a suggestion to combat tax evasion associated with cryptocurrencies. They proposed the implementation of a global cryptocurrency information exchange system for more effective response measures.Kim Beom-jun, a professor at the University of Seoul Law School, and Kim Seok-hwan, a professor at Kangwon National University Law School, delved into this matter last Friday at the tax administration forum that took place at the Korea Federation of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (KBIZ).Photo by Karolina Grabowska on PexelsRising crypto adoptionAccording to their report, the cryptocurrency market is currently facing challenges stemming from the Terra-Luna incident and the broader economic downturn caused by rising interest rates and inflation. However, it’s worth noting that in Korea alone, there are approximately 6.27 million cryptocurrency exchange users, with a collective market capitalization of around KRW 19.4 trillion ($14.6 billion). This suggests that cryptocurrencies continue to integrate into our everyday lives.Crypto tax starting in 2025Starting in 2025, South Korea is set to impose taxes on income from cryptocurrency trading. However, before the tax is put into effect, there is a pressing need for administrative enhancements aimed at preventing tax evasion involving cryptocurrencies. These initiatives encompass the development of crypto-tracking technology and the allocation of sufficient staff and budgets to enable tax authorities to effectively address crypto-related issues.Foreign exchanges and DeFi platformsDuring the forum, experts voiced concerns about the possibility of tax evasion through the use of overseas crypto exchanges and decentralized platforms.Tax specialists pointed out that it’s difficult to expect people to fully meet their tax obligations when they’re trading on international exchanges. They also emphasized the challenges in collecting accurate tax information from crypto users who report transactions in overseas financial accounts.OECD’s initiativeIn August 2022, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) gave the greenlight to the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF). This framework aims to standardize the reporting of tax information related to crypto-asset transactions and facilitate the automatic exchange of such information. During the forum, researchers proposed that in the future, if Korea decides to participate in the OECD’s CARF, it should not only establish a cooperative system between virtual asset service providers (VASPs) and regulatory authorities but also revisit and amend pertinent laws.Additionally, presenters at the forum underlined the necessity of obligating taxpayers to furnish essential tax information for effective virtual asset taxation. They also stressed the importance of implementing appropriate sanctions in cases where taxpayers fail to comply with these reporting requirements.Commissioner Kim Chang-ki of the National Tax Service (NTS) stated that the agency is committed to enhancing tax accountability and transparency. He added that the NTS will take strong measures against malicious tax evasion activities, especially those involving online platforms.Furthermore, Commissioner Kim mentioned that the tax agency is boosting its investigative capabilities using scientific methods to combat emerging forms of tax evasion, like those related to virtual assets. He also said the NTS is expanding its international collaboration and devising other measures.

Fake Security Tokens Linked to HD Hyundai Oilbank in Circulation

Fake Security Tokens Linked to HD Hyundai Oilbank in CirculationHD Hyundai Oilbank, one of South Korea’s leading refiners, said Wednesday that a counterfeit security token dubbed “HOBT” claiming affiliation to the company has been circulating online. The token is allegedly based on old stock certificates under the company’s former name, Hyundai Oil Refinery, as the underlying assets, though the company had changed its name to HD Hyundai Oilbank back in 2002. Both the token and the underlying asset are invalid and have no relation at all to HD Hyundai Oilbank, the company emphasized, so investors must exercise caution.Fraudulent promotionEntities that are giving away or selling HBOT tokens are attracting investors by promoting a one-on-one exchange of the tokens for old Hyundai Oil Refinery stock certificates. They are also promising to grant shareholder rights through blockchain technology as well as interest payments of 4% every month for a total of 24% over six months.Fraudulent activities like these have recently been on the rise following the legalization of security tokens and the formal issuance of a select few tokens.Investigative measuresThe Incheon Metropolitan Police is currently conducting an investigation into the case. Notably, the old Hyundai Oil Refinery stock certificates that the involved entities are claiming to be underlying assets have been proven to be fake in over ten court rulings. Although owners of these old stock certificates had filed lawsuits against the company related to shareholder registration renewals since the late 2000s, all of them had lost their cases.Photo by Tingey Injury Law Firm on UnsplashPast events resurfacingThis recent circulation of the forged HOBT tokens is attributed to employees of a disposal company who pocketed the invalid stock certificates and certificate papers, rather than disposing of them as they were required to do.In January 2002, HD Hyundai Oilbank had hired a company to dispose of documents — including those related to the old stock certificates — that had lost their validity during the process of attracting and increasing foreign capital.“In May of that year, we started receiving frequent inquiries about the stock certificates. We filed a legal complaint against the employees and conspirators of the disposal company for illegally distributing the certificates (including the stock certificate papers), and they were subsequently punished for theft and fraud,” the company explained.
