Korbit relists blockchain gaming token WEMIX

Policy & Regulation·December 07, 2023, 3:51 AM

Korbit, a major fiat-to-cryptocurrency exchange in South Korea, is relisting WEMIX, a cryptocurrency issued by blockchain gaming company Wemade. Korbit’s decision follows in the footsteps of its local competitors, Coinone and Gopax, who have also recently reinstated WEMIX. The WEMIX token is used to pay transaction fees, stake and vote on governance proposals.

Starting at 1:00 a.m. UTC on Dec. 7, Korbit users gained the ability to create a WEMIX wallet and deposit the token on the exchange. Trading and withdrawals of WEMIX will be enabled at 3:00 p.m. UTC on the same day.

The Korbit exchange only accepts WEMIX deposits originating from the Wemix network. Deposits of WEMIX sent from other blockchain networks, including BNB Beacon Chain, Ethereum and Klaytn, may be processed improperly and carry the risk of becoming irretrievable.

Decision reversal and underlying rationales

Over a year ago, the Digital Asset eXchange Alliance (DAXA), a coalition of the five Korean fiat-to-crypto exchanges — Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit and Gopax — collectively decided to delist WEMIX from all their platforms. This decision was based on several concerns, including unreliable disclosure of the token’s circulating supply, provision of inadequate and misleading information to investors and inconsistencies in the data provided during the explanation period. These issues collectively eroded trust in the company.

However, Korbit has determined that the previously identified issues with WEMIX have been addressed. The exchange observed that the circulating supply of WEMIX has been reduced to a level that aligns with the schedule initially submitted to DAXA. The launch of the WEMIX mainnet rectified the discrepancy where the circulating supply displayed on crypto data platforms like CoinMarketCap was twice the actual figure. Additionally, the collateral that Wemade had deposited in decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol Kokoa Finance has been recovered.

The crypto trading platform also believes that Wemade has resolved the problem of providing misleading information to investors by making corrections to its third-quarter earnings report.

Regarding data fallacies, Korbit holds the view that the game publisher has taken steps to address the inaccuracies in the data previously provided to the alliance. These efforts to reduce uncertainty and fulfill disclosure responsibilities include several measures: Wemade now live-updates the circulating supply of WEMIX and other pertinent details on its official blog. The gaming company has also entrusted the management of its non-circulating WEMIX supply to Ceffu, the sole institutional custodian for Binance, a global crypto exchange. Furthermore, Wemade now makes announcements about token movements whenever they occur.

Restrictions imposed on Gopax

Meanwhile, Korbit stated its commitment to complying with voluntary regulations and common listing guidelines established between DAXA members. This statement is particularly noteworthy in light of the recent developments with Gopax. Gopax faced the three-month suspension of its voting rights from DAXA, following the relisting of WEMIX.

Sygnum survey reveals greater crypto allocation appetite in Singapore

Sygnum Bank, a digital asset bank based in Switzerland and Singapore, has conducted a survey which has identified that investors in Singapore are more interested in increasing their allocation to crypto than their international peers. The bank’s 2024 Future Finance survey states that while a global average of institutional investors of 47% plan to increase their exposure to crypto next year, in the case of Singapore-based institutional investors, 57% of them expressed the view that they would increase their crypto holdings in 2025.Photo by Precondo CA on UnsplashThe report states:  "Singapore investors exhibit a higher risk appetite and motivation to invest on average than respondents from other countries.” The annual survey, which was published on Nov. 14, collated insights garnered from more than 400 institutional and professional investors, distributed across 27 countries, with average investor experience of in excess of 10 years. 121 of the survey’s participants were based in Singapore, with the survey having been conducted during Q3 2024. Long-term confidenceSingaporean respondents suggested that they were confident in the long-term potential and outlook where cryptocurrencies are concerned. While the main reason for investing in crypto was to gain exposure to digital assets in line with a global trend (56%), 41% of respondents from the city-state cited portfolio diversification as their reason for investing in the emerging asset class.  75% of investors expressed the belief that regulatory clarity has improved recently. Growing confidence among institutional investors generally is likely to be developing due to increasing certainty relative to digital asset regulation. While Donald Trump had not been elected in the United States at the time that survey participants responded, it was looking increasingly likely that he would win the election.  That’s likely to have had a bearing on investor outlook, not just within the United States but internationally, given the implications in terms of positive regulation and an overall positive approach to crypto. 39% of Singaporean respondents cited yield-generation opportunities as their motivation in investing in digital assets. The recent advent of spot crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) stood out as another motivation for investors.  Breaking down specific areas of interest within the crypto sector, 71% of Singaporean respondents were interested in investment in layer-1 blockchain networks. Meanwhile, 56% expressed an interest in Web3 infrastructure investment options, with 41% showing an interest in layer-2 blockchain networks. Interest in asset tokenizationIn relation to tokenization, 47% of those surveyed in Singapore indicated an interest in tokenizing mutual funds and corporate bonds over and above other financial assets and products. When first proposed, real estate was considered the most obvious asset primed for tokenization but mutual funds and corporate bonds now appear to be gaining more traction. Asset tokenization has been garnering considerable attention in mainstream finance but especially so in Singapore. Local regulator, the Monetary Authority of Singapore, (MAS) has been running Project Guardian, a collaboration between MAS and the financial services industry with an emphasis on asset tokenization. The project recently brought in the German central bank, the World Bank, HSBC and markets infrastructure firm Euroclear as participants.

KuCoin Report Points to Marked Increase in Crypto Investors in Turkey

KuCoin Report Points to Marked Increase in Crypto Investors in TurkeyAs part of its “Into The Cryptoverse: Understanding Crypto Users” series, Seychelles-based crypto exchange KuCoin published a report on Thursday that identifies a significant increase in the number of crypto investors in Turkey over the course of the past eighteen months.Photo by Dima Rogachevskiy on UnsplashCrypto adoption surgeThe report, the fifteenth such report produced by KuCoin as part of this series, reveals that there has been a substantial surge in crypto adoption among Turkish adults, with an impressive 52% of the adult population participating in crypto investments.Since November 2021 there has been a 12% increase in the number of crypto investors aged 18 to 60. These statistics underscore the growing interest and acceptance of cryptocurrencies in Turkey. It’s not likely to be a coincidence that this surge in adoption has come about against the backdrop of the local currency, the Turkish lira, losing more than 50% of its value against the US dollar. Here are some of the key insights that the report identified:Growing Crypto Adoption Among Turkish Adults: The survey indicates a significant upswing in the number of Turkish adults investing in cryptocurrencies. The percentage of adults embracing crypto has surged from 40% to 52% over the last year and a half, despite the overall crypto market finding itself in the doldrums within that time frame.Increased Female Participation: While male investors continue to dominate at a rate of 57%, the survey points to a notable trend of increasing participation among women, particularly in the younger age brackets. Approximately 47% of female crypto investors are between the ages of 18 and 30.Youth-Driven Growth: Younger generations are leading the crypto adoption charge, with investors aged 31 to 44 constituting the largest group at 48%. Furthermore, a significant proportion of investors under 30 joined the market within the past year, indicating the influence of youth within the crypto space. Many have expressed the view that crypto adoption will come about through the younger demographic. It’s a factor that has not gone unnoticed by crypto platforms, including fellow Seychelles-based exchange Bitget.Motivations for Crypto Investments: The report delves into the motivations behind crypto investments among Turkish adults. A substantial 58% express the desire to create long-term wealth, transcending generational boundaries. This suggests a widespread belief in crypto’s potential as a tool for financial freedom.Popular Cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin remains a favored choice, capturing 71% of overall investor interest. Ethereum follows closely with 45% interest, while stablecoins garnered the attention of 33% of surveyed participants.Crypto Trading Dominates: A significant 70% of Turkish participants use crypto for trading, indicating the prevalent use of cryptocurrencies as investment instruments. Meanwhile, 22% have ventured into buying NFTs.Influence of Personal Connections: Personal relationships play a pivotal role in driving crypto adoption in Turkey. About 57% of participants learned about crypto through family and friends, highlighting the significance of these connections in introducing newcomers to the crypto world. This finding resonates with a similar finding relative to a recently published report covering crypto adoption in Vietnam. The report has been based upon online surveys carried out by KuCoin between May 5 and May 12 of this year.
