KuCoin affiliate applies for license in Hong Kong amid identity mix-up

Policy & Regulation·November 29, 2023, 2:36 AM

In a recent development on the Hong Kong crypto scene, VAEXC Limited, a cryptocurrency exchange, has submitted an application for a crypto trading license. The move had sparked a misunderstanding as some reports suggested the application was submitted by a Binance-linked company when in fact, it turns out to be a KuCoin-affiliated entity.

Reporting confusion

A report published in October by the South China Morning Post (SCMP) asserted that a newly established crypto exchange named HKVAEX appeared to be connected with global crypto platform Binance.

In the meantime, it emerged more recently that an application for a trading license had been submitted by the similarly named VAEXC Limited. While many reports confused this entity with what is believed to be a Binance-linked company, subsequent reports have emerged to confirm that the application pertains to an entity associated with the Seychelles-incorporated cryptocurrency exchange, KuCoin.

In response to these initial wayward reports, a HKVAEX spokesperson confirmed that the company is in the process of preparing a licensing application in Hong Kong but that it has yet to do so. The spokesperson stated:

“We are still in the preparatory stages for the application” . . . “VAEXC is an entirely separate applicant, and our operations are completely independent.”

Leveraging KuCoin technology

The SFC updated the list of virtual asset trading platform applicants on Nov. 27, disclosing that Hong Kong VAEXC Limited submitted its application on Nov. 25. Operating under the name VAEX, the exchange places a strong emphasis on security and regulatory compliance, positioning itself as a next-generation, trusted virtual asset exchange.

Backed by a team with extensive industry expertise and leveraging KuCoin Tech, VAEX aims to offer a secure, reliable, stable and user-friendly platform for crypto asset trading and management. In celebration of VAEX’s launch, KuCoin conducted a public testing campaign, featuring a 15,000 USDT prize pool for eligible KuCoin users and participants.

Despite the recent scandals in Hong Kong’s crypto scene — including an alleged fraud at the JPEX crypto exchange and more recently still, an alleged Ponzi scheme orchestrated by unlicensed crypto exchange Hounax — the regulatory stance in Hong Kong remains unwaveringly positive where digital assets are concerned.

Introduced in June, regulations in Hong Kong mandate cryptocurrency exchanges to apply for a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license from the SFC by June 2024 or face de-registration. Notably, unregistered exchanges are permitted to operate during the interim transition period.

KuCoin’s investment arm, KuCoin Ventures, has also been active in Hong Kong. In March, the firm led a $10 million investment in CNHC, a Hong Kong-based stablecoin issuer. Three months later, amid a changing regulatory environment in 2023, the platform confirmed a tightening of its compliance procedures with the introduction of mandatory know-your-customer (KYC) identity checks.

Meanwhile, it’s unclear as to what plans Binance has to expand in Hong Kong if any. The leading global exchange is facing very challenging legal issues in the United States currently. That could have a bearing on its plans in Hong Kong, while it remains unclear as to what level of involvement it has with HKVAEX.

Subreddit Token Price Slide Following Surge

Subreddit Token Price Slide Following SurgeReddit’s subreddit community tokens, Moon and Brick, having experienced a remarkable surge in prices last week fueled by a significant increase in trading volume, have taken a downward trajectory, plummeting in price.Photo by Mike Petrucci on UnsplashCrypto.com token listingThe Moon token, associated with Reddit’s r/CryptoCurrency community boasting over 6.5 million members, shot up from approximately $0.09 to nearly $0.58 on July 19, just after Singapore trading platform Crypto.com listed the token.Concurrently, trading volume spiked to around $3 million on Wednesday, marking an impressive boost.Similarly, the Fortnite subreddit community token, Brick, which Crypto.com distributes as a reward to contributors of r/Fortnite, also witnessed a substantial price surge. The token’s value surged from $0.01 on July 17 to approximately $0.10 on July 19, according to data from CoinGecko.Surge acknowledgedIn response to the sudden price surges, Crypto.com released a note early on Monday, acknowledging the surge both tokens had experienced recently. However, in a swift turn of events, both tokens experienced a significant downturn in the past 24 hours, with their prices plummeting by over 20%.As of midday (ET) on Monday, Moon was trading at $0.33, while Brick was valued just under $0.05, as reported by CoinGecko data. Moreover, trading volumes for both tokens have significantly contracted during this period of volatility. Moon’s volume shrank from over $1 million on July 23 to approximately $200,000 on Monday. On the other hand, Brick’s volume saw an even more drastic decrease, falling from approximately $210,000 on July 23 to a mere $26,000 on Monday.Terms of service changeMarket analysts speculate that the recent change in Reddit’s Terms of Service might have been the catalyst for the initial price increases. Reddit’s alteration of its Terms of Service on July 16 to permit users to trade community tokens and avatars potentially triggered the surge in token prices. It appears that Web2 centralized virtual goods such as coins and awards are making way for tradable Web3 community points.Speculating on the token price surge, Bobby Ong, the Co-Founder and COO of Malaysia-headquartered cryptocurrency data aggregator CoinGecko, wrote via Twitter last week: “Both tokens increased at the speculation of the changes coming at Reddit. No one knows exactly what is happening but Reddit deprecating Web2 Coins & Awards while allowing trading of their Web3 CPs could be something to monitor in the coming months.”Despite the recent downturn, the overall crypto space remains highly dynamic and unpredictable. Events such as the listing of tokens on prominent trading platforms can cause rapid price fluctuations. As always, that scenario makes it essential for investors to approach these assets with caution. While Moon and Brick may have encountered a sharp decline, the cryptocurrency market, in general, has proven its resilience and ability to rebound with Bitcoin currently holding a unit price of $29,125. As the market continues to evolve and gain wider acceptance, investors will need to continue to exercise caution and consider the volatility inherent in digital assets.

One of these unique pieces will be auctioned alongside the positive film, which served as the source for the photo’s development. The starting price for this item is set at 100,000 yen, offering collectors the opportunity to acquire an NFT paired with a tangible artifact.Following this initial collection, ANA plans to release its second batch of NFTs on June 7. This collection will feature the NFT rendition of the first Boeing 787 operated by ANA, presented in the form of a 3D model airplane. IOTA co-founder meets with Philippine Secretary of Trade to further adoption

Dominik Schiener, the co-founder of distributed ledger technology (DLT) project IOTA, outlined on X on Dec. 12 that he had met with Cristina Aldeguer-Roque, Secretary of Trade of the Philippines. Commenting further, Schiener wrote: “We are looking forward to expand IOTA and our trade infrastructure TWIN across South East Asia in 2025.” Photo by iSawRed on UnsplashCutting through trade barriersTWIN refers to IOTA’s Trade Worldwide Information Network, a continuation of another longstanding IOTA project, the Trade and Logistics Information Pipeline (TLIP). The objective of TWIN is to cut through trade barriers and improve connections between disparate national trading systems. In rolling out the network, IOTA has formed a consortium which includes organizations such as TradeMark Africa, the Global Alliance for Trade Facilitation and the Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade. TWIN seeks to optimize trade processes by merging physical goods with digital infrastructure, eliminating inefficiencies and boosting transparency. Schiener anticipates that once participants place data on the network, they will ultimately tokenize assets on it. In turn, this will result in utility for the IOTA token, once TWIN is released on the IOTA mainnet. The TWIN project is currently staffed by 28 people but Schiener believes that this will grow to 100 people over the course of the next two years. The project originally emerged in Germany, with the IOTA Foundation having its headquarters in Berlin. Initially, IOTA concerned itself with European blockchain initiatives in trying to find its place in the industry. Earlier this year, its Web3 identity authentication solution was chosen by the European Commission for inclusion within the European Blockchain Sandbox Initiative (EBSI). In August, the IOTA Foundation completed the final stage of the European Union’s blockchain pre-commercial procurement (PCP) program. Strategic expansionHowever, over the course of the past year, the project has expanded towards searching for product market fit within emerging markets. In November 2023, the project established the IOTA Ecosystem DLT Foundation within the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) financial center in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This marked the first DLT foundation to have established itself within the ADGM.  $100 million in funding was provided with the objective of nurturing the IOTA ecosystem and accelerating the growth of the IOTA protocol. Since then, the TON Foundation and the Aptos Foundation have moved to register under the ADGM’s DLT Foundations framework. East Africa has been ground zero for IOTA’s attempts to enhance cross-border processes related to trade documentation, where it has been working with TradeMark Africa and local regulators. In Singapore, the IOTA Foundation has collaborated with global innovation ecosystem Tenity to establish the IOTA Accelerator, a 12-week initiative aimed at assisting early-stage startups concerned with real-world asset (RWA) tokenization within the IOTA ecosystem. Schiener’s meeting in the Philippines would suggest that the project is making greater efforts still in terms of bringing about the adoption of the technology in Southeast Asia. In his X post, Schiener wrote: “Let's connect the world with sovereign digital infrastructure.”
