Taking on Deribit

BitMEX made a name for itself in the industry by offering 100x leveraged perpetual swaps. It recently upped the ante to 250x for its Bitcoin perpetual swap prior to the halving. The company is now attempting to etch out a significant market share in the crypto options niche. To do so, it will have to compete with market leader Deribit. Deribit has been at the helm, accounting for 70% ($35.7 billion) of the $51.1 billion trading volume for Bitcoin options in April and maintaining its dominance since 2020. Despite challenges from large crypto exchanges like OKX and Binance, Deribit has held its ground. In discussion with The Block, BitMEX CEO Stephan Lutz said that the firm was targeting at least $500 million in trading volume within three months,

Zero trading fees

In a bid to attract traders to its new platform, BitMEX has devised a promotional campaign featuring zero trading fees on all options transactions throughout May. Moreover, the first 1,000 new traders joining the platform will receive a $20 bonus, further incentivizing participation. The platform also offers rewards based on trading volume, referred trading volumes and monthly trading competitions, injecting an element of competition and potential profit for active users.

Upon conclusion of the promotional period, BitMEX's fee structure for options trading will align with its existing spot trading framework. This strategic move ensures a seamless integration of the options platform into BitMEX's ecosystem, providing users with a consistent and predictable cost model when trading across different digital assets.

Animoca Brands publishes positive financials in investor update

Hong Kong-based blockchain gaming and venture capital firm Animoca Brands has revealed a positive set of financial results in a recently published report.  In an investor update published to its website on March 5, the firm revealed key unaudited financials and business highlights for Q4 2024 and the previous 12 months ending on Dec. 31, 2024. Whereas other sectors report actual revenue figures, the gaming sector relies upon “bookings,” a measure of total sales and income generating activity of the company. The firm reported bookings of $314 million for last year. Compared with 2023, when Animoca reported bookings of $280 million, the firm has achieved a year-on-year increase of 12%.Photo by Lukas on PexelsAdvisory business growthThe company broke that financial measure down further, indicating that of the $314 million in sales and other income-generating activity, its Digital Asset Advisory (DAA) business accounted for $165 million of the overall amount. This disclosure is notable given that it represents a 116% increase, demonstrating a considerable growth in the firm’s advisory business and a diversification of its revenue streams. Animoca’s DAA business offers Web3 projects access to token advisory, and more specifically, consultation regarding tokenomics, marketing and listing. The business also consults in relation to node operation and trading services. Given that the company reported that bookings related to Web3 businesses weighed in at $110 million, Animoca’s advisory business has overtaken the contribution made by its Web3 businesses.  Contributing Web3 businessesAmong the Web3 businesses that made the greatest contributions were The Sandbox, Moca Network, Anichess, Gamee, nWay, Open Campus, TinyTap, Animoca Brands Japan, Eden Games, Blowfish Studios, Pixowl and Crazy Defense Heroes (TOWER). Bookings also included revenue generated via portfolio investments and partnerships. The company recorded $39 million, achieved through investment activities. In discussion with Cointelegraph, Animoca Brands co-founder and executive chairman, Yat Siu, said that the positive bookings numbers were a consequence of the firm’s ongoing efforts to innovate. He stated: “In 2024, we placed less emphasis on the US market, owing to various regulatory struggles experienced by other companies, and we also became more focused on providing support to the companies in our portfolio.” Animoca’s balance sheet holdings were robust in 2024, with $293 million in stablecoins and cash and $538 million in digital assets. Additionally, $538 million in off-balance sheet token reserves was reported. Stablecoin initiativeThe firm has developed a particular interest in the stablecoin sector through a partnership with British multinational financial services firm Standard Chartered and telecommunications firm HKT. That initiative involves the formation of a joint venture company which will go forward to issue a Hong Kong dollar (HKD)-backed stablecoin once a license has been secured from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA). Siu identified real-world asset (RWA) tokenization as another growth area for the company. The Animoca Brands co-founder outlined that he expects the firm to record further growth as 2025 progresses. Notwithstanding that, he warned that such expectations may be affected by adverse economic developments and risks, including the tariffs policy being pursued by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Incheon City to leverage blockchain for construction transparency

Incheon City to leverage blockchain for construction transparencyIn response to growing concerns among Koreans over recent apartment complexes built with missing reinforcing bars and unauthorized materials, the city of Incheon is turning to blockchain technology to tackle these issues.Incheon City revealed on Thursday (local time) that it has submitted proposals for public sector blockchain projects offered by the Ministry of Science and ICT. This move aligns with the city’s goal of establishing itself as a blockchain hub. By partnering with both the public and private sectors, the city aims to provide beneficial services for its citizens. This year, the Ministry of Science and ICT will gauge interest across government agencies, municipalities and public institutions for six projects, with a combined budget of KRW 10 billion ($7.5 million). In 2024, they plan to select project implementers through a bidding process. The goal is to identify public service projects where the application of blockchain technology can offer significant benefits.Photo by C Dustin on UnsplashBlockchain-driven construction oversightIn October, Incheon submitted proposals for two blockchain projects. First, it introduced a “safety certification” service to promote transparency at construction sites. This service will harness blockchain-driven integrated control technology to transparently manage apartment complex constructions. It will utilize technologies like closed-circuit television (CCTV), Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) to oversee the presence of authorized personnel and track the use of approved materials. The city felt the need for this service after observing the prevalent issues with missing reinforcing bars in newly constructed flat-plate structure apartment complexes and incidents of forgery and counterfeiting of material certificates.Blockchain and eco-friendly membershipAnother project Incheon has proposed is an integrated membership service centered on eco-friendly practices, with the goal of encouraging resource recycling.Incheon City currently runs recycling shops and automated recycling machines across its counties and districts to foster recycling habits. However, with different locations necessitating different apps, the city is aiming to consolidate these into a single platform. Additionally, it intends to leverage blockchain technology to enable citizens to verify their environmental contributions.Lee Nam-joo, Head of Incheon’s Future Industry Bureau, said that how technology should be used is self-evident. He emphasized the city’s dedication to introducing tangible services that address societal challenges and enhance public safety and convenience through the application of digital technology in public services and industrial sites.

Upcoming Regulatory Framework in Taiwan Sees Crypto Exchanges Unite

Upcoming Regulatory Framework in Taiwan Sees Crypto Exchanges UniteIn preparation for the impending arrival of a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies in Taiwan, nine prominent cryptocurrency firms have announced their collective efforts to establish an industry association. The nine exchange businesses announced the development via a press release which was published on Tuesday. The move comes in anticipation of Taiwan’s Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) releasing comprehensive guidelines on cryptocurrency trading and payments by the end of September.Photo by Timo Volz on UnsplashDeveloping regulatory environmentThe industry body will include participation from native exchanges such as MaiCoin, BitoGroup, and ACE. While Taiwan has been behind the regulatory curve until now where crypto is concerned, the one measure that the FSC had already taken steps to mandate was that virtual asset services providers (VASPs) in Taiwan must adhere to the country’s anti-money laundering (AML) regulations. However, numerous other intricacies unique to the cryptocurrency industry still require careful consideration and regulation.Authorities in Taiwan have also put forward ten guiding principles for VASPs, designed to protect Taiwanese consumers. The forthcoming guidelines aim to address these concerns by introducing a comprehensive set of rules inspired by the VASP licensing framework in Hong Kong. One of the primary focuses of these proposed guidelines is consumer protection. They advocate for specific hot and cold wallet ratios for customer deposits with cryptocurrency exchanges, a measure designed to safeguard customer funds. Additionally, the guidelines suggest mandatory insurance against user losses to further enhance consumer confidence. Moreover, the FSC’s guidelines intend to prevent offshore cryptocurrency exchanges from operating onshore in Taiwan without proper compliance registration. This step aims to ensure that all participants in Taiwan’s cryptocurrency market adhere to uniform standards. In a bid to stabilize the Taiwanese financial system and prevent deceptive advertising practices, the guidelines also propose a ban on stablecoins linked to the Taiwanese dollar and impose restrictions on foreign exchange advertising within the country.Enabling self-regulationRegulators have also proposed the classification of crypto regulations within their own novel business category. As part of that initiative, officials expressed an interest in fostering self-regulation. The formation of this industry group could be deemed to be an encouraging sign relative to that aspiration. The nine cryptocurrency firms forming the industry association have established a working group led by Winston Hsiao, Co-Founder of XREX. This group aims to expedite the development of self-regulatory rules based on the forthcoming FSC guidelines.Wayne Huang, another Co-Founder of XREX, expressed his hope that the new FSC guidelines will provide the cryptocurrency industry with legitimacy, oversight, a clear growth trajectory, and an accelerated path to earn public trust. The formation of this industry association, coupled with the impending release of the FSC’s comprehensive regulatory guidelines, marks a significant milestone for Taiwan’s cryptocurrency sector. As the industry evolves, these proactive measures seek to ensure its stability, security, and compliance with international standards.
