Animoca Brands publishes positive financials in investor update

Web3 & Enterprise·March 06, 2025, 1:33 AM

Hong Kong-based blockchain gaming and venture capital firm Animoca Brands has revealed a positive set of financial results in a recently published report.

In an investor update published to its website on March 5, the firm revealed key unaudited financials and business highlights for Q4 2024 and the previous 12 months ending on Dec. 31, 2024.

Whereas other sectors report actual revenue figures, the gaming sector relies upon “bookings,” a measure of total sales and income generating activity of the company. The firm reported bookings of $314 million for last year. Compared with 2023, when Animoca reported bookings of $280 million, the firm has achieved a year-on-year increase of 12%.

Advisory business growth

The company broke that financial measure down further, indicating that of the $314 million in sales and other income-generating activity, its Digital Asset Advisory (DAA) business accounted for $165 million of the overall amount.

This disclosure is notable given that it represents a 116% increase, demonstrating a considerable growth in the firm’s advisory business and a diversification of its revenue streams. Animoca’s DAA business offers Web3 projects access to token advisory, and more specifically, consultation regarding tokenomics, marketing and listing. The business also consults in relation to node operation and trading services.

Given that the company reported that bookings related to Web3 businesses weighed in at $110 million, Animoca’s advisory business has overtaken the contribution made by its Web3 businesses.

Contributing Web3 businesses

Among the Web3 businesses that made the greatest contributions were The Sandbox, Moca Network, Anichess, Gamee, nWay, Open Campus, TinyTap, Animoca Brands Japan, Eden Games, Blowfish Studios, Pixowl and Crazy Defense Heroes (TOWER).

Bookings also included revenue generated via portfolio investments and partnerships. The company recorded $39 million, achieved through investment activities.

In discussion with Cointelegraph, Animoca Brands co-founder and executive chairman, Yat Siu, said that the positive bookings numbers were a consequence of the firm’s ongoing efforts to innovate. He stated:

“In 2024, we placed less emphasis on the US market, owing to various regulatory struggles experienced by other companies, and we also became more focused on providing support to the companies in our portfolio.”

Animoca’s balance sheet holdings were robust in 2024, with $293 million in stablecoins and cash and $538 million in digital assets. Additionally, $538 million in off-balance sheet token reserves was reported.

Stablecoin initiative

The firm has developed a particular interest in the stablecoin sector through a partnership with British multinational financial services firm Standard Chartered and telecommunications firm HKT. That initiative involves the formation of a joint venture company which will go forward to issue a Hong Kong dollar (HKD)-backed stablecoin once a license has been secured from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA).

Siu identified real-world asset (RWA) tokenization as another growth area for the company. The Animoca Brands co-founder outlined that he expects the firm to record further growth as 2025 progresses. Notwithstanding that, he warned that such expectations may be affected by adverse economic developments and risks, including the tariffs policy being pursued by U.S. President Donald Trump.

South Korea to Revive Tech Exports with Metaverse, Blockchain

South Korea to Revive Tech Exports with Metaverse, BlockchainThe South Korean Ministry of Science and ICT revealed today a strategy to enhance the country’s tech exports. The plan includes leveraging the potential of the metaverse and blockchain as promising export items.Photo by Pixabay on PexelsEmphasis on the digital sectorIn response to the recent decline in exports, the strategy seeks to establish new sources of growth by prioritizing the digital sector, which has historically been a key driver of Korea’s exports. Recognizing the complex challenge posed by the global economic slowdown and other factors, all government ministries are collaborating to counteract the export slowdown. The plan leverages South Korea’s digital capabilities and implements proactive measures to adapt to evolving export trends, including the recent advancement of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools and the acceleration of digital transformation. By tapping into emerging markets and nurturing innovative companies, the government strives to diversify its export portfolio and strengthen its position in the global market.Despite achieving a record high of $248.8 billion in tech exports in 2022, Korea has faced year-on-year declines since July 2022 due to the global economic downturn. The semiconductor sector, which accounts for more than half of the nation’s tech exports, has been particularly sluggish. Nevertheless, the rise of new tech markets driven by significant technological advancements, such as ChatGPT, and the global push for digital transformation offer opportunities to overcome the current export slump.Emerging marketsAgainst this backdrop, the government is committed to backing the development of products that resonate with the evolving export landscape. It is eyeing emerging markets, notably the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, recognizing their fertile grounds for the swift adoption of evolving tech trends, fueled by their substantial youth populations. Furthermore, the government plans to provide policy-level support to tech companies.Government supportUnder this plan, the government will identify promising companies and offer assistance, including consultation and guidance on product commercialization. It will also support metaverse companies participating in overseas projects by covering localization development costs. In the blockchain field, comprehensive support, including technology verification, consulting, and marketing, will be provided to those working towards international standardization for NFTs and their overseas commercialization. As part of this initiative, exhibition rooms will be established on metaverse platforms like ZEPETO and IFLAND in September. These platforms will provide opportunities for innovative firms to showcase their products. At the same time, the plan will facilitate interaction between Korean companies and overseas buyers through online and offline events to boost exports.

Shapella Upgrade to Have limited Impact on ETH’s Selling Pressure

Shapella Upgrade to Have limited Impact on ETH’s Selling PressureThe Shapella upgrade on the Ethereum network scheduled to take place on Wednesday will only have a limited impact on the selling pressure on ETH, according to a report by the research center at Korean cryptocurrency exchange Korbit.©Pexels/JievaniShapella upgradeOne of the key features of the Shapella upgrade is to allow withdrawal of staked ETH. This upgrade follows September’s Merge upgrade that switched the Ethereum network’s consensus algorithm from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake, significantly reducing electricity consumption.Impact on selling pressureTo predict the impact of the Shapella upgrade on the selling pressure on ETH, the analysts at Korbit Research calculated the amount of time it takes for all the ETH staked as of March 22 to be withdrawn. They believe this calculation is relevant because withdrawals of staked ETH could trigger bulk sales, potentially imposing a greater selling pressure on ETH.According to the findings, the daily sell volume for the first three days is expected to be 300,700 ETH, 0.254% of the circulating supply. This volume will gradually decrease to 43,000 ETH for the next six months and to 29,000 ETH for the following six months, each corresponding to 0.035% and 0.024% of the circulating supply, respectively. All in all, bulk selling of ETH is not likely, considering it will take about a year and five months for all the staked ETH to be withdrawn and that the amount of withdrawable ETH will stay relatively low for each period. Furthermore, since this analysis assumes an extreme case, the market will be able to effectively handle the volume over the six month to 18 month period.4 other reasonsIn addition, Korbit Research outlined four other aspects that limit the selling pressure on ETH.Firstly, there is some concern that the selling volume of ETH may increase due to unstaking resulting from the cessation of staking services at American crypto exchange Kraken. However, a decrease in the number of validators on the Ethereum network will raise the base reward. This may prompt those who unstaked ETH to stake them on other platforms, rather than selling them.Second, ETH locked up at liquidity staking protocols such as Lido Finance and Rocket Pool provide liquidity for representations of staked ETH. These platforms allow users to stake fewer than 32 ETH for rewards. According to a February Binance Research report, 57.7% of ETH stakers enjoy liquidity and rewards. Therefore, there may be a limited impetus to divest of staked ETH.Third, since only 41.1% of ETH stakers are seeing profits as of the time of writing the report, the remaining stakers would have to risk losses when withdrawing ETH. This suggests that those not yet seeing profits are more likely to keep ETH staked. Furthermore, Dune Analytics data shows that most of the ETH stakers with gains staked ETH when its price was relatively low, which indicates that they participated in staking in early days. Shivam Sharma, the author of the aforementioned Binance report, states that these ETH stakers are likely “some of the strongest Ethereum believers.”Lastly, despite the Shapella upgrade, ETH withdrawals at different staking pools may not be initiated immediately. This could limit the circulation of withdrawable ETH, which in turn would hinder the selling pressure on ETH.Macroeconomic factorsThe Korbit researchers concluded their paper with a note that the selling pressure on ETH will be more influenced by macroeconomic factors than technical factors. They added that a possible downturn in the overall economy and corrections in risky asset markets might lead investors to sell ETH.
