Gate Ventures, Boon Ventures launching $20M crypto fund

Web3 & Enterprise·October 15, 2024, 8:24 AM

Gate Ventures, the investment arm of Gate.io, a global cryptocurrency exchange with its origins in China, has gotten together with Thailand’s Boon Ventures and Movement Labs, to launch a $20 million fund aimed at supporting projects that utilize the Move programming language, as well as interoperability with the Ethereum ecosystem.

Accelerating Move-based blockchain adoption

Movement Labs is a developer of modular Move-based blockchains. A press release published on PR Newswire on Oct. 13 outlined that the firms intend to direct the fund towards a number of key areas. Firstly, its objective will be to accelerate the adoption of Move-based blockchain solutions. Secondly, the fund will be directed towards supporting projects which enhance security and performance in decentralized networks.

A further objective is the extension of support to projects which bridge Move and Ethereum virtual machine (EVM) ecosystems. The final key objective has been set out to drive innovation in Web3 infrastructure and applications.

Gate Ventures Managing Partner Kevin Yang claimed that the $20 million fund “marks a significant milestone in [the company’s] mission to drive forward-thinking solutions in the Web3 ecosystem.” Yang added that in collaborating with Movement Labs and other forward-thinking entities within the Web3 sector, the company is “paving the way for the future of decentralized technology.”

Mentorship & hackathons

Web3 startups supported by the fund will be given access to a mentorship program, while hackathon events will also be organized. Furthermore, there will be an opportunity for selected startups to participate in a research grant program relative to blockchain interoperability.

Gate Ventures garnered attention within the industry recently, with the announcement in August that it had entered into a partnership with Abu Dhabi’s Blockchain Center. That collaboration has led to the establishment of Falcon Gate Ventures, a $100 million Web3 innovation fund.

Last month, the company participated in the Series A funding round of Kroma, an Ethereum layer-2 network project.

While interoperability is singled out as a key objective of this fund, Movement Labs has been working towards that goal recently. Last week, the firm appointed an omnichain interoperability protocol project, LayerZero, as an interoperability provider. It’s envisaged that the partnership will enable developers using the Move programming language to create decentralized applications that can run across various blockchain networks, including EVM.

While Facebook parent company Meta developed the Move programming language, Movement Labs has worked towards developing its use further. Earlier in the year, Movement partnered with Aptos Labs, a firm that was founded by ex-Meta employees that has built out a network based on Move, in another effort to bring about blockchain interoperability relative to EVM and non-EVM networks.

A spokesperson for Movement Labs told Cointelegraph that “the ultimate goal is to create an integrated blockchain environment where developers can build across platforms without sacrificing security or performance.”

Back in April, Movement raised $38 million in a Series A financing round which was led by Polychain Capital. At the time, Movement Labs Co-Founder Rushi Manche said that he and his co-founders “started building Movement to increase the velocity of innovation in crypto where the next Facebook can be built on-chain by developers who do not have the resources for large development teams and expensive auditors.”

Druk Holdings and Investments (DHI) acts as the commercial arm of the Royal Government of Bhutan. It was formed pursuant to a Royal Charter in 2007 with the mandate of making investments on behalf of Bhutan while optimizing usage of resources.Driving growthAccording to the information provided, the two companies will “launch the partnership through establishing a closed-end fund with an estimated size of up to US$500 million.” The initiative will see a canvas for funding commencing at the end of this month. Bitdeer’s role in the partnership is that of a general partner while DHI will act as a strategic limited partner.Bitdeer’s Chairman, Jihan Wu, expressed his enthusiasm in gaining access to Bhutan’s zero-emissions hydropower resources through the partnership. Wu stated that the fund represents “a pathway to foster global stakeholder networks that are driving growth and innovation in the technology sector in Bhutan.”Once funding has been raised, that capital will be channeled directly into greenfield operations on the ground in Bhutan. That encompasses the construction of data centers and what the joint parties to the initiative describe as “the acquisition of cutting edge technology.”Photo by Singkham on PexelsDigital transformationUjjwal Deep Dahal, CEO of DHI, stated: “The partnership with Bitdeer to launch a carbon-free digital asset mining data center represents an investment in a more connected and sustainable domestic economy, helping ensure we are at the forefront of global innovation.”Bhutan is executing on a plan to accelerate digital transformation and economic diversification by exploiting opportunities in emerging sectors. Further evidence that this is part of a broader longer term strategy emerged recently. Dahal had told a local Bhutanese publication that DHI had been engaged in bitcoin mining on behalf of the Kingdom since bitcoin had a unit price of $5,000. In that interview, Dahal acknowledged that the involvement from the outset of its bitcoin mining activities was part of a broader, long term strategy.Bitdeer’s Asia expansionAlthough Bitdeer is Singapore-based, its operations up until this point have been focused on facilities located in Northern Europe and North America. According to this latest announcement, the bitcoin miner sees this partnership as a “crucial expansion into Asia for Bitdeer.” A shift in geographical focus may be well timed by Bitdeer as it emerged today that President Joe Biden in the United States is considering the imposition of a 30% tax on crypto mining. The bitcoin miner completed a long overdue special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) merger with Blue Safari Group last month. As part of that process, it listed on the Nasdaq. That public listing process has been a baptism of fire for the company as shortly afterwards, the company traded down 30% from the point of its initial listing.A corporate filing made by the company with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) provides more detail with regard to Bitdeer’s plans in Bhutan. “We expect to generate 100 MW out of the 550 MW power supply from Bhutan, where the construction of a mining data center is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2023 and complete in the third quarter of 2023,” the filing states.

Bybit enables stock trading with USDT

Dubai-headquartered crypto derivatives trading platform Bybit has moved to enable stock trading on its platform.  The offering, initially featuring 78 stocks, is being provided via Bybit’s MT5 platform, which includes access to various financial instruments including forex, commodities, contracts for difference (CFDs) and crypto, according to an announcement made by the company last week.Photo by Ishant Mishra on UnsplashStock derivatives via CFDsIndividual stocks are being offered in a pairing with U.S. dollar stablecoin USDT. Bybit’s MT5 is a trading platform originally developed by software company MetaQuotes, facilitating the integration of various asset classes within one platform. Enabled through the use of CFDs, holders of such stock-derived CFDs can receive dividend adjustments based upon the ex-dividend events of the underlying stocks. A trading fee of 0.04 USDT has been set, with a minimum charge of 5 USDT per order. Access to leading global equitiesBybit users will now be able to gain exposure to leading U.S. equities such as Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN), Meta (META), Microsoft (MSFT) and Nvidia (NVDA). By adding this product to its multi-asset trading platform, Bybit has reduced a degree of friction for market participants. In pairing these stocks with USDT, it means that there is no fiat onboarding required and transferring funds in fiat from outside the crypto ecosystem is not required. In a press release, the firm asserted that the development was a “landmark move bridging traditional and decentralized finance.” Bybit further asserted that with this product launch, it has become “the first and only major crypto exchange to unify crypto, stocks, and traditional assets under one roof.” Previous offeringsA few years ago, global crypto exchange platform Binance had offered tokenized stocks through a partnership with German global financial services firm CM-Equity AG. However, it withdrew that product offering in 2021 when faced with growing regulatory pressure.  Failed crypto exchange FTX also offered its users exposure to tokenized stocks, which was also facilitated by CM-Equity AG. That product offering came to an abrupt halt in November 2022 when the platform collapsed. With a more positive regulatory position having been adopted in the United States following the election of U.S. President Donald Trump, tokenized stock offerings are emerging once again. In March Coinbase CFO Alesia Haas said that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) could facilitate such offerings going forward. The U.S. crypto exchange platform has revived plans to tokenize its own COIN stock, alongside other securities.Bernstein analysts recently predicted that the crypto sector is moving towards integrated platforms that offer both traditional financial products alongside digital assets. Further evidence of this approach emerged on May 22 with the news that global crypto exchange platform Kraken plans to add access soon to a range of tokenized stocks for its global user base.  The company’s U.S. clients can already access in excess of 11,000 stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Blurring the lines further between TradFi and the digital assets space, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon indicated last week that the investment bank will facilitate Bitcoin trading for clients from now on.
