Avalon integrated with Bybit to offer Bitcoin yield

Web3 & Enterprise·April 15, 2025, 5:14 AM

Dubai-headquartered global crypto exchange Bybit has integrated the Avalon Finance protocol within its platform to offer users greater opportunities to earn yield on Bitcoin.

Avalon Finance is a decentralized lending protocol that offers a range of financial services on the Merlin Chain, a Bitcoin layer-2 network. It facilitates users to borrow stablecoins using their Bitcoin as collateral, while also providing opportunities to earn yield by contributing to digital asset liquidity pools.

CeFi to DeFi bridge

Avalon Labs, the driving force behind the Avalon Finance protocol, took to X on April 14 to outline that the protocol had gone live on Bybit. It stated:

”By integrating with Bybit Earn, Avalon unlocks new yield opportunities for Bitcoin holders by arbitraging our fixed-rate institutional borrowing layer — delivering predictable, enhanced returns through a seamless CeFi-to-DeFi bridge.”

Avalon claims to offer a mechanism which brings Bitcoin into DeFi. It accepts FBTC, an omnichain digital asset with $1.25 billion in total value locked (TVL), pegged 1:1 with Bitcoin, as collateral, while lending it out at fixed interest rates. USDT stablecoin borrowed on the strength of that Bitcoin can then be deployed by platform users to execute high-yielding DeFi strategies via the Ethena Labs synthetic dollar protocol, implicating the use of Ethena USD (USDe) and Ethena Staked USD (sUSDE).

In this way, the Avalon Finance protocol is providing a conduit between centralized finance and decentralized finance. Avalon Labs claims that the offering turns Bitcoin into a productive asset. It stated:

“Returns are stable, secure, and passed back to Bybit Earn users—making Bitcoin a productive asset while maintaining simplicity and risk control.”

More exchange collaborations planned

It’s understood that Avalon plans to collaborate similarly with other crypto exchanges in the future. Towards the end of 2024, the firm raised $10 million in Series A funding, with the funding round having been led by Framework Ventures, with participation from UXTO Management, Presto Labs and Kenetic Capital.

At the time, Avalon Labs asserted that the funding would be used to expand its Bitcoin-centric ecosystem.

BTC-backed public debt fund

Taking to X in February, the project outlined that after years of research, it was working towards the launch of a Bitcoin-backed public debt fund that would fall within the parameters of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) regulatory framework. The firm stated:

”By exploring regulated investment structures, we aim to bridge the gap between traditional finance and crypto, opening new opportunities for Bitcoin-backed financial products.”

Regulation A is an exemption offered by the SEC enabling a company to sell securities to the investing public without full registration. Should it eventually take this path forward, the project would pioneer this approach to launching a public debt fund as little progress has been made by others in taking such a Bitcoin-related product forward to date.

Towards the end of last month, Avalon Labs announced that it has added support for BlackRock’s “BUIDL” fund, a tokenized fund created by the world’s largest asset manager, which invests in short-term U.S. Treasury bills.

HKEX to launch digital asset index with real-time pricing within Asian time zone

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX), the operator of the Hong Kong stock exchange, has announced plans to launch a digital asset price index. The index which the company is marketing as the HKEX Virtual Asset Index Series, will aim to provide for the developing asset class, while complimenting Hong Kong’s overarching efforts to transform itself into a regional digital assets hub. The company announced details of the new product offering in a press release published to its website on Oct. 28. HKEX indicated that the product will go live on Nov. 15, outlining that the product “provides investors with transparent and reliable benchmarks for Bitcoin and Ether pricing in the Asian time zone.”Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashReference index for Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH)The firm claims that the Index Series will include a Reference Index for Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) while providing a Reference Rate for the two leading digital assets. The Reference Index will be formulated using a 24-hour volume-weighted reference spot price, with that pricing coming from leading virtual asset exchanges. The Reference Rate has been devised with the settlement of financial products in mind. As a result, it will be calculated on a daily basis at 16:00 Hong Kong time. From a compliance perspective, the product complies with the European Union’s (EU) Benchmark Regulation (BMR), being the first such product to be developed in Hong Kong. Additionally, the Index Series will be administered by CCData, a UK-headquartered data and index solutions firm formerly known as CryptoCompare.  Taking to the X social media platform, CCData outlined that the product is underpinned by its data selection process, leveraging its “Exchange Benchmark methodology to provide highly robust real-time and EOD  [end-of-day] reference rates.” The firm added that the offering will introduce “essential benchmarks for the Asian market,” while enhancing transparency and reliability within the digital assets sector, broadening opportunities for market participants across the region. Enabling informed investment decisionsHKEX CEO Bonnie Chan said that the company was pleased to introduce the HKEX Virtual Asset Index Series to meet the region's growing demand for this fast-emerging asset class. “By offering transparent and reliable real-time benchmarks, we seek to enable investors to make informed investment decisions,” she added.Like many other financial services firms in TradFi, HKEX has been getting itself acquainted with the blockchain and digital assets sector. In October of last year, the firm launched a blockchain-based settlement platform called Synapse. The platform relies upon DAML-based smart contracts. Earlier this year, a number of asset management firms launched spot Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on the exchange. In April, a report published by HKEX suggested that the true potential of crypto ETFs had yet to be fully realized, pointing out that a number of regulatory tweaks would be necessary to better support digital asset-based products. HKEX itself could have a greater role to play in the expansion of the digital assets sector in Hong Kong. Last month Hong Kong Legislative Council member Lee Wai-hung called on the platform to expand its range of derivatives, including crypto derivatives.

Hong Kong moves towards stablecoin licenses as Shenzhen warns of stablecoin scams

The Chinese autonomous territory of Hong Kong is moving closer towards the issuance of stablecoin licenses, while 30 kilometers away on the Chinese mainland, the authorities in Shenzhen are warning against stablecoin investment scams. Hong Kong has set Aug. 1 as the effective date for its incoming Stablecoin Ordinance. Firms such as JD.com and Ant Group, an affiliate company of Alibaba Group, are understood to be interested in seeking licensing. Photo by ダモ リ on UnsplashSingle-digit license issuanceIn a recent interview with Chinese language newspaper Ming Pao, Christopher Hui, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, outlined that stablecoin licenses are likely to be issued in 2025 following the passing of the Aug. 1 effective date, although he indicated that the number of licenses issued will remain in single digits. Hui hopes that stablecoins can address some of “the difficulties and pain points in the real economy,” like cross-border payments involving volatile local currencies. The official said that stablecoins can reduce transaction costs and facilitate cross-border transactions when based on fiat currencies and serving as effective payment tools. Yuan-based stablecoinsHui stated that the issuance of a stablecoin in Hong Kong which is based on the sovereign currency of another jurisdiction would only be permitted following “discussions with the relevant authorities."  It’s understood that the aforementioned Chinese e-commerce firms have been lobbying government for the approval of offshore yuan-based stablecoins. Last month, the Governor of the People’s Bank of China, Pan Gongsheng, acknowledged that stablecoins are disrupting global payments infrastructure. However, mainland China still has a mining and trading ban in place in relation to crypto, despite previous speculation that the country would open up to crypto. Hui expressed the view that where a stablecoin implicates another sovereign currency, there are additional risk factors that would have to be taken into account. Exploiting uninformed view of stablecoinsMeanwhile, 30 kilometers from Hong Kong, the authorities in Shenzhen have issued a warning to members of the public highlighting that scammers are exploiting the public’s uninformed view of stablecoins as a guise through which to lure victims into investment scams. They asserted that scammers are using new concepts, in this case stablecoins, for hype in an effort to peddle illegal fundraising, gambling, fraud and money laundering schemes. The Shenzhen Municipal Task Force Office for Preventing and Combating Illegal Financial Activities asked the public to report such schemes “engaged in illegal fundraising in the name of investing in stablecoins,” in order to enable the authorities to crack down on the illicit activity. The authorities added: "We urge the general public to remain rational in their investment decisions, avoid blindly trusting extravagant promises, develop a correct understanding of money and investment, stay alert to financial risks and avoid falling victim to scams." Last month, JD.com took to Weibo to warn the public that fraudulent JD stablecoins were being offered by scammers at a time when the company has yet to issue a stablecoin.

Metaplanet continues Bitcoin investment despite market fluctuations

Metaplanet, a Japanese investment and consulting firm, has recently announced the acquisition of an additional 42.466 Bitcoins, valued at 400 million Japanese yen ($2.5 million). This purchase increases their total Bitcoin holdings to 203.734 BTC, which were acquired at an average price of approximately 10 million yen ($62,000) per coin—about 7% above the current market price. This move reinforces Metaplanet’s strategy to integrate Bitcoin as a central component of its treasury assets. Market impact and future plansDubbed "Asia’s MicroStrategy" for its aggressive cryptocurrency investment strategy, Metaplanet has seen significant market momentum since its initial Bitcoin purchase in April 2024. The firm's stock surged by 90% the day following its initial announcement. However, following a recent downturn in Bitcoin prices, Metaplanet’s stock experienced a 25% decline from its peak in June. Despite this, the stock price remains 344% higher than at the start of 2024. In response to the volatile market, Metaplanet has announced plans to issue 1 billion yen ($6.26 million) in bonds to fund further Bitcoin acquisitions, signaling continued confidence in the long-term value of Bitcoin as part of its investment strategy.
