“We’re excited to share news about our fundraising round,” said Chris Jang, Co-CEO of ZTX. “We have been building steadily and discreetly for well over a year, and with our token launch happening in the coming months we want to emphasize the commitment that our investors, just like our team, have toward our vision to provide an infrastructure layer to creators.”

Global backing for ZTX

The latest funding round led by Web3 infrastructure firm Jump Crypto attracted investors from around the world, such as Parataxis Capital, MZ Web3 Fund, Collab+Currency, and more, due to its promising outlook in the Web3 sphere.

“We believe that ZTX has the potential to create a unique world, setting it apart from all other Web3 metaverse projects. The seamless integration of digital asset creation and trading in the metaverse with Web3 technology is truly exciting, making their application within Web3 applications a natural fit. Moreover, the ZTX team’s expertise in both the metaverse and Web3 is exceptional, and we have high expectations for their future endeavors,” said Yuki Kanayama, General Partner at MZ Web3 Fund.

Strong foundation and team expertise

ZTX’s creator ZEPETO also offers solid promise as South Korea’s leading metaverse platform that touts over 400 million lifetime users. It is the fourth-largest metaverse platform in the world, holding its spot among the same ranks as Roblox, Fortnite, and Minecraft. It has also partnered with major brands such as Gucci and Starbucks along with celebrities like the K-pop girl group Blackpink.

Made up of industry veterans from tech and Web3 giants like Apple, Roblox, Solana, Cosmos, and more, the ZTX team plans to utilize its various underlying advantages to globalize Web3 and bring it to a wider mainstream audience.

The team has consistently been building the ZTX ecosystem from the ground up. In a recent development, the platform ran its first private, invite-only beta test last month, dubbed “Playtest”. It has also worked with Dust Labs, the software provider for NFT projects such as DeGods and y00ts, to launch ZTX Partner Wearables, a community-driven initiative that provides tools to IP partners for creating 3D assets and contributing to the expansion of the narrative within an open-world environment.

“As a crypto-focused venture fund, we back visionary teams who are using decentralized technology to shape the next wave of consumer products. We are thrilled to be part of this round, supporting ZTX’s exceptional team and their unique advantages. ZTX can provide a distinct infrastructure layer for diverse NFT projects and Web3 builders with its creator-focused tooling, and we look forward to helping ZTX succeed in its ambitious mission,” said Stephen McKeon, Partner at Collab+Currency.

Future project

ZTX’s upcoming activities include the launch of the Genesis Home Mint, featuring 4,000 bespoke 3D District Homes. This collection offers benefits such as a district membership in one of the four districts — Arts, Financial, Fashion, and Games — as well as exclusive access to future releases, events, and enhanced gameplay experiences within ZTX.

Mt.Gox creditors start to confirm receipt of first repayments

It's been nearly ten years since the infamous collapse of the Japanese bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox, with some creditors of the defunct business now claiming to have finally received their long-awaited repayments.Photo by Su San Lee on UnsplashSubreddit payment confirmationsTestimonies shared on the Mt.Gox creditor subreddit and a dedicated Telegram channel reveal that certain payments, in the form of Japanese yen, have been distributed to creditors who opted for PayPal as their preferred mode of receipt. Excitement marked the early stages of this repayment process. Users on Reddit joyfully shared their experiences, with one exclaiming:"I got money!! I just got my initial payment via Paypal!!"This development comes after Mt.Gox rehabilitation trustee, Nobuaki Kobayashi, had previously extended the repayment deadline from Oct. 31, 2023, to Oct. 31, 2024. However, last month, Kobayashi informed creditors that certain cash repayments would be initiated before the year's end. Despite efforts to expedite the process, the sheer volume of creditors and the complexities involved mean that repayments will continue into 2024. The collapse of Mt.Gox in early 2014 triggered global regulatory responses and initiated a nearly decade-long bankruptcy and corporate rehabilitation process. The exchange fell victim to a series of hacks between 2011 and 2014, leaving a lasting impact on the cryptocurrency landscape. The commencement of repayments has been hanging over the crypto market for many years, with many fearing that the process may have a dampening effect on the bitcoin unit price, given that funds are being distributed in Japanese yen and bitcoin. Earlier this year, the U.S. government indicted two Russian nationals for laundering funds stolen from Mt.Gox, shedding light on the enduring legal ramifications stemming from the exchange's demise. Double payment glitchHowever, it appears the process encountered some glitches, as other Reddit posts indicated that a few creditors received double payments via PayPal, adding a new layer of complexity to the already intricate Mt. Gox saga. Reddit users, such as u/rlycreativename, have shared emails they claim to have received from the Mt.Gox Rehabilitation Trustee. The emails acknowledge a system issue leading to inadvertent double transfers and legally obligate recipients to return the surplus amount. While some users have complied with the request and returned the duplicated funds, others have expressed hesitancy, citing the historical challenges creditors faced in obtaining their money. The situation has evoked discussions on Reddit, with users debating whether the Trust deserves a swift return, considering the prolonged struggle creditors endured to reclaim their funds. While it may be tempting for some creditors to hold on to the duplicate payment, such a decision may only serve to heap more misery on long-suffering Mt.Gox creditors. The recent case of Jatinder Singh and Thevamanogari Manivel would be very relevant for creditors to consider. Singh was a customer of well-known digital assets platform Crypto.com. In 2021 the firm inadvertently transferred $10 million to his account. Singh conspired with Manivel to withdraw and keep the funds. A community corrections order of 18 months has been imposed on Manivel in Australia while Singh will be sentenced in February.

Singapore Looks to Prohibit Crypto Lending and Staking

Singapore Looks to Prohibit Crypto Lending and StakingIn a move to bolster investor protection and maintain financial stability, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) is introducing new guidelines for cryptocurrency platforms operating in the country.Details of the measures were published by MAS on Monday. According to its statement, the measures “will mitigate the risk of loss or misuse of customers’ assets, and facilitate the recovery of customers’ assets in the event of a DPT [Digital Payment Token] service provider’s insolvency.”The proposed guidelines outline several key measures. One such measure is the daily reconciliation of customer assets, which will help prevent discrepancies and safeguard against potential losses.Photo by Hu Chen on UnsplashHolding assets in trustAdditionally, the custody function, responsible for holding and safeguarding client assets, will be operationally separated from other business divisions to minimize the risk of mismanagement or unauthorized use. By the end of this year, it’s understood that crypto platforms will be required to store client assets in trust accounts, ensuring enhanced security and accountability.DisclosuresFurthermore, licensed cryptocurrency service providers will be mandated to provide explicit disclosures to customers, clearly outlining the risks associated with holding and trading digital payment tokens (DPTs). Recognizing the speculative nature of digital token trading, the MAS acknowledges that regulations alone cannot fully protect consumers from potential losses. To further protect retail investors, the MAS intends to prohibit cryptocurrency service providers from facilitating lending or staking activities. Lending and staking, where digital tokens are loaned or pledged to earn profits, are considered unsuitable for the general public due to their complex and high-risk nature. These measures come as part of Singapore’s efforts to strengthen its regulatory environment for digital assets. The consultation process began last year, following the collapse of FTX, a cryptocurrency exchange.Singaporeans suffered disproportionately with the collapse of FTX as previously, MAS had banned global crypto exchange Binance from operating within the city-state. That led to Singapore having more FTX customers than many other world regions. To compound matters, state-owned global investment firm Temasek, was an investor in the fraudulent crypto exchange.MAS had called for feedback and proposals, with a focus on enhancing investor safeguards and promoting responsible trading practices. While the regulations aim to provide a safer environment for investors, the MAS also emphasizes the importance of individuals exercising caution when engaging in digital token trading.Contrasting approachesWhile Singapore is taking steps to tighten regulations, other cities like Hong Kong are adopting a more inclusive approach to the crypto industry. Hong Kong Legislative Council member Johnny Ng has voiced support for the local crypto business and has encouraged prominent exchanges like Coinbase to establish operations in the territory, aiming to foster greater engagement and growth within the sector. As the crypto industry continues to evolve, regulatory frameworks play a crucial role in ensuring investor protection and maintaining market integrity. Singapore’s proactive approach to strengthening its regulatory environment reflects its commitment to striking a balance between fostering innovation and safeguarding the interests of investors.
