USDC stablecoin issuer Circle is embarking on a strategic partnership with Grab, Southeast Asia’s multifaceted super app for transportation, deliveries, and payments relative to Web3.

Circle’s foray into Web3

Circle’s latest offering, a Web3 services platform, is set to be seamlessly integrated into the Grab app. The objective of that integration is to enhance Grab user experiences through blockchain-enabled solutions. In that way, the partnership will broaden the horizons of Grab’s already extensive service portfolio, which includes ride-hailing, food delivery, package delivery, ticket bookings, and insurance. Grab hopes that the move will propel the Singaporean super app further into the world of blockchain technology.

Grab Web3 Wallet

News that Grab was on the road towards rolling out a Web3-related product offering leaked out last week when Chinese crypto reporter Colin Wu tweeted out details related to a Web3 wallet. This official announcement qualifies those initial reports, as one of the key aspects of this collaboration is the introduction of the ‘Grab Web3 Wallet.’

The feature, accessible to Singaporean users, enables the easy setup of a blockchain-enabled wallet. Users will have the opportunity to earn rewards in the form of digital collectibles and utilize non-fungible token (NFT) vouchers, thereby immersing themselves in the dynamic world of digital assets.

To kickstart this venture, Circle’s Web3 Services will initially support the SG Pitstop Pack NFT vouchers. These vouchers can be redeemed at popular Singapore-based stores in advance of the upcoming F1 Singapore Grand Prix. Jeremy Allaire, Co-Founder and CEO of Circle, expressed his enthusiasm for the company’s efforts in collaborating with what he termed “global-scale consumer internet brands to bring everyday utility to users.” Allaire maintains that the partnership with Grab aligns perfectly with that mission.

While bringing Web3 technology into everyday use in Singapore, the partnership also lends support to the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s (MAS) Project Orchid initiative. This initiative seeks to demonstrate the real-world application of Purpose Bound Money. Circle’s Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Global Policy, Dante Disparte, expressed the company’s enthusiasm for accelerating blockchain-powered innovation alongside Grab while aligning with Singapore’s vision to be a leading global hub for responsible digital asset innovation.

Circle has been steadily establishing its presence in Singapore, with notable achievements including acquiring a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license from the MAS in June and opening its official office in May.

In February, Circle joined forces with Tribe, the first government-supported blockchain ecosystem builder, to launch a unique training and support program aimed at nurturing and upskilling the region’s Web3 developer talent pool.

Founded in 2012 in Malaysia as a ride-hailing app, Grab initially entered the scene as a competitor to Uber in the region. Over the years, it has evolved into a true “super app,” offering a myriad of services, including GrabPay (payment services), package delivery, ticket bookings, and insurance. Its user-friendly interface and comprehensive services have made it the go-to app for more than 25 million users in Southeast Asia every month.

Gemini Opening Engineering Center in India

Gemini Opening Engineering Center in IndiaUS-based crypto exchange Gemini announced on Thursday that it is in the midst of opening an engineering center in India. The company plans to open the center in Gurgaon, making it Gemini’s second largest engineering hub behind its existing base in the United States. Gemini also has offices in the United Kingdom, Singapore and Ireland.©Pexels/Studio Art SmileDeveloping next-gen user experiencesThe objective of the India-based engineering, design and operations team will be to work on the development of core platform fundamentals relative to compliance, security, payments, and data pipelines and warehousing. Furthermore, the unit is being set the goal of building new feature sets relative to the company’s NFT and digital asset marketplaces. What that team develops is intended to be used within Gemini’s overall retail and institutional product and service offering across in excess of seventy countries worldwide. In the statement published to its website, Pravit Tiwana, Gemini’s Global Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Asia-Pacific (APAC) region Chief Executive Officer (CEO) stated that the firm is actively recruiting software engineers and technical product managers and for other technical roles to staff the Gurgaon facility. Tiwana emphasizes a need for people who are “inspired to learn quickly” relative to DeFi, Web3, NFTs and DAOs.Singapore expansionTiwana himself has been newly appointed to his role and in a separate announcement Gemini founders Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss welcomed Tiwana on-board. The statement also reveals that in addition to establishing an engineering team presence in India, it also intends to add a business team in India and to expand its business team at its existing Singapore base with the objective of growing its institutional and retail customer base in the APAC region. The Winklevii twins said that they believe that “crypto and Web3 products will continue to have a [sic] strong growth trajectories in APAC. Crypto knows no boundaries, and that is why Gemini is a global company.”Expanding beyond the USIt’s patently obvious to anyone following developments in the crypto space over the course of recent months that the Biden administration in the United States is currently hostile to crypto. The Washington, D.C. government has used various mechanisms of state including the Federal Reserve, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Department of Justice and the Department of the Treasury to instigate a purge against crypto companies, including those who bank crypto companies. That has seen key operators in the US crypto ecosystem looking beyond US borders right now.Earlier this week, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong signaled that the company would act and move overseas if the regulatory environment in the United States didn’t improve. Subsequently, it emerged that Coinbase had established a presence in Bermuda. It’s being speculated that this entity could be used to float an offshore exchange. Similarly, the company is understood to be seeking a crypto license in Abu Dhabi.Gemini looking to develop overseas is likely to be motivated by similar concerns. Crypto companies can see that jurisdictional arbitrage applies and if governments act to stymie such business activity, other global centers such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi, India and others will seize the opportunity and nurture that business and the innovation at hand.

In addition, the firm has followed up on March 4 with the publication of financial results for Q4 2023.Photo by Thought Catalog on UnsplashSealminer A1The company revealed on X that its inaugural crypto mining chip, known as the SEAL01, destined to drive the Sealminer A1 mining rig, was engineered utilizing four-nanometer process technology, a feat achieved in collaboration with a semiconductor fabricator. Bitdeer boasts that this chip exhibits a power efficiency ratio of 18.1 J/TH. At the heart of Bitdeer's latest achievement lies the SEAL01 chip, the culmination of years of dedicated research and development. By harnessing state-of-the-art technology and meticulous planning, Bitdeer aims to tackle the pressing challenges confronting Bitcoin miners, including skyrocketing operational costs and environmental implications. The company claims that the efficiency of the SEAL01 chip not only promises a shift towards more sustainable mining practices but also holds the potential to significantly reduce energy consumption, thereby bolstering profitability and return on investment for miners. "This powerful chip offers enhanced Bitcoin mining performance with minimized power consumption, leading to lower operating costs and a reduced environmental footprint for miners," Bitdeer affirmed in the X post. The firm stopped short of disclosing the launch timeline for its upcoming mining rig. On the financial front, Bitdeer disclosed its financial results for Q4 2023, on March 4. Blockchain Solutions Provider Block Odyssey Launches NFT Ticket Service, “MakeDrop”

Blockchain Solutions Provider Block Odyssey Launches NFT Ticket Service, “MakeDrop”Korean blockchain solutions startup Block Odyssey said Monday it is launching an NFT-based ticket issuance service dubbed “MakeDrop” in an effort to revolutionize ticketing and event services in the era of Web3.Photo by Andrey Metelev on UnsplashLimitations of traditional digital ticketsUntil now, major ticket reservation platforms have made it challenging for event organizers to streamline the ticketing process for events such as corporate or campus gatherings, concerts, festivals, and more.Event organizers have thus had to manually send notifications via text messages and emails, print paper tickets, and directly manage overall ticket sales and distributions. The absence of tools to identify ticket holders from attendees also makes it difficult to accurately determine participation and contribution ratios.Blockchain meets ticketingBut with the rapid advancement of digitized ticket issuance, NFT tickets have been gaining traction as a transparent and secure solution to such challenges. These tickets are verified and stored on a blockchain, setting them apart from traditional forms of digital tickets such as barcodes.About MakeDropBlock Odyssey’s MakeDrop is an open service that allows anyone to easily create, issue, and manage one-of-a-kind NFT tickets with individual ownership rights and transaction history. If secondary ticket transactions occur, all ownership changes can be verified on the blockchain, making it possible to block attempts at fraudulent or repetitive secondary trading. The service is particularly convenient for users, as they can automatically generate a wallet address for storing their NFTs by logging in to social media accounts without having to install a separate cryptocurrency wallet. As for event organizers, they can swiftly issue mobile tickets without using third-party ticket reservation platforms. Ticket invitations are sent to recipients via KakaoTalk, South Korea’s most popular messaging app, making the service more accessible as well. Those who have not received an invitation can still apply for participation if the event is public. Upon acceptance by the organizer, they will receive an approval notification through KakaoTalk, Block Odyssey explained.Participants can then present the NFT ticket’s QR code on the day of an event, and organizers can conduct real-time validation using the QR check feature provided by MakeDrop.Notably, while traditional ticket reservation platforms often do not share ticket holder information with event organizers, MakeDrop allows independent information management for all events. This allows organizers to identify low-engagement or idle members and offer more benefits to loyal participants. As part of its website launch promotion, MakeDrop is currently holding an event to distribute 100,000 free NFT tickets. The company also plans to release a mobile app in the future after incorporating user feedback and enhancing functionalities.
