A fusion of NFT art and creative workshops

The second event, dubbed “Meta1 Art & Play,” is being held in collaboration with PBG again at Airdrop Space in Garosu-gil, southern Seoul, and will continue until September 3. It showcases an art exhibition of 20 works, including new NFT artwork by Kim Sunwoo and DADAZ as well as pieces by collage artist Sunhotan and illustrator Boat. The latter two artists will also teach one-day art workshops for pre-registered guests, and their works will later be issued as NFTs, Hana Securities said.

Collaborative pop-ups and diverse events

In addition, the event features a pop-up bar jointly operated by Hana Securities and online liquor retailer Dali. Visitors can enjoy a cocktail made with the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Nomad Seoul edition whisky by signing up for Dali and opening a Hana Securities banking account. Johnnie Walker and Dali are participating as sponsors of the event.

Visitors who make reservations beforehand will also be eligible to receive a cup of coffee and an NFT made by one of the participating artists. Surprise gifts will also be prepared for 100 guests every day on a first come, first served basis.

“We have prepared ‘playable, visual, and enjoyable’ content for visitors to have hands-on engagement in line with the recent trend of experience-based consumption,” said Im Sang-soo, Head of the Wealth Management division at Hana Securities.

All NFTs were sold out within a day. Blockchain-backed fantasy gameBuilt on Unreal Engine 5, a three-dimensional computer graphics engine used for game and content development, Night Crows features high-quality graphics, an immersive world, realistic action and major in-game battles. It has topped the popularity and revenue charts on major app markets in South Korea since its launch in April last year. The global version of the game, which is scheduled for release in March, will harness blockchain technology and a multifaceted tokenomics system that tokenizes in-game items. It will also introduce character NFTs that keep character and player data in one place, connecting the game’s internal and external economies. Wemade also stated that owners of the NFTs can exchange them with CROW, the game’s native token, starting on April 1. The token’s value is stabilized by a minting process controlled by the Peg Stability Module (PSM), which allows users to swap a native stablecoin for other protocol-accepted stablecoins at a 1:1 rate.

Hong Kong to bridge insurance and digital assets via new risk framework

Hong Kong’s insurance regulator is drafting rules that would bring insurers’ cryptocurrency exposure under a risk-based capital framework. According to Bloomberg, the Insurance Authority of Hong Kong is preparing a risk-based capital framework that would impose a 100% risk charge on insurers’ crypto holdings. The proposal distinguishes among crypto exposures, assigning stablecoin investments risk charges based on the fiat currency backing the Hong Kong-regulated token rather than applying a uniform treatment. The regulator is also considering capital incentives to channel insurers’ investment into infrastructure projects supporting Hong Kong or mainland China, including those listed or issued within the city. The Insurance Authority said the regime is designed to bolster the industry while promoting broader economic development. A public consultation on the rules is scheduled to run from February to April, ahead of any legislative submission.Photo by Vlad Deep on UnsplashStablecoin licensing focuses on robust reservesSeparately, the Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau is advancing other regulatory initiatives in the digital asset space. Secretary Christopher Hui indicated that the first batch of stablecoin licenses is expected to be issued early next year. According to the Hong Kong Economic Times, Hui noted that the government had received 36 stablecoin license applications by the end of September, following the implementation of the Stablecoins Ordinance in August. Regulators are prioritizing applicants that demonstrate strong reserve management, price stability, and robust anti–money laundering (AML) controls. Hui added that the government is currently collaborating with the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) to finalize licensing rules for virtual asset trading platforms and custodial service providers, with proposals expected to reach the Legislative Council next year. StanChart and Ant’s tokenized depositsWhile regulators refine the rulebook, the traditional banking sector is moving forward with the technology underpinning the digital pivot. Standard Chartered has collaborated with Ant International to launch a tokenized deposit solution on Whale, Ant’s blockchain-powered treasury management platform. As reported by Tech in Asia, the solution enables real-time transfers in Hong Kong dollars, offshore yuan, and U.S. dollars. This initiative falls under the umbrella of Project Ensemble, a program launched by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority in March 2024 to shape the city’s tokenization ecosystem. Market headwindsThese developments follow the crypto sector’s entry into Hong Kong’s equity market. According to Bloomberg, HashKey Holdings, a licensed exchange operator, listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Dec. 17, raising HK$1.6 billion ($206 million). While shares initially debuted above the offer price, they had fallen approximately 15% to HK$5.69 by Dec. 22. The lackluster performance coincides with a broader pullback in the crypto market. Bitcoin is currently trading below $89,000, roughly 30% off its October peak. Institutional caution is also evident in global flows. According to CoinShares, crypto investment products recorded $952 million in net outflows for the week ending Dec. 20. Ethereum and Bitcoin products led the exit with outflows of $555 million and $460 million, respectively. Conversely, altcoins XRP and Solana bucked the trend, seeing inflows of $62.9 million and $48.5 million. James Butterfill, head of research at CoinShares, attributed the negative sentiment to delays regarding the CLARITY Act, a U.S. bill designed to clarify digital asset regulation, and continued selling by whale investors.

Aevo Launches Novel Index Perpetual Contract

Aevo Launches Novel Index Perpetual ContractAevo, the layer-2 derivatives platform launched by Singapore’s Ribbon Finance earlier this year, has introduced a new index perpetual contract. The contract allows traders to engage in long or short positions based on the market capitalization of accounts within the social application Friend.tech.Photo by Compare Fibre on UnsplashFRIEND-PERPThe FRIEND-PERP market is now live according to The Block, and it has gained significant traction, boasting a daily trading volume of $501,824 and a current trading price of $7.14. This market operates on a unique premise — a perpetual contract, which, unlike conventional futures contracts, does not adhere to an expiration date. This feature is particularly appealing to the crypto trading community, enabling them to seize opportunities without the constraints of time-bound contracts.Surge in interestFriend.tech, the social app at the center of this Aevo product offering, has integrated with Ethereum layer-2 network Base, a blockchain incubated by Coinbase earlier this year. This network, which officially welcomed the public on August 9, has been the center of attention within the crypto sector over the past couple of weeks. The social app enables market participants to buy shares of individuals who hold accounts on X (formerly Twitter). Since its launch earlier this month, the Friend.tech app has grown rapidly. It attracted over 100,000 daily users within 24 hours of its launch. Each user stands to benefit financially from the purchase and sale of their shares, a pioneering approach that has lured prominent figures, including venture capitalist Garry Tan, NBA star Grayson Allen, and celebrated YouTuber FaZe Banks, to the platform.Boost for BaseUS crypto platform Coinbase has embraced Friend.tech as it marks the first major breakthrough use case for its Base blockchain network. This collaborative effort has propelled the Base network to new heights, positioning it among the top cryptocurrency projects by user fee revenue. With $1.4 million in fees generated over the last 24 hours alone, Friend.tech ranks among industry giants, trailing only Ethereum and Lido Finance in this metric, according to data from DeFiLlama. While the app has risen at a phenomenal pace, there are concerns relative to the degree of privacy it affords its users. The public availability of the Friend.tech API used to convert X usernames into wallet addresses has raised the alarm for potential data exposure.A Yearn Finance developer, known by the pseudonym Banteg, used this API to compile a list of Ethereum addresses linked to X accounts. While the community has reassured users that access can be revoked, the implications of this exposure for privacy and security cannot be understated. The Aevo project was first announced by Ribbon Finance in September 2022 and subsequently launched in June. The goal of the project is to convert users from centralized exchanges, bringing them over to the decentralized exchange (DEX) platform.
