BlackRock Investment Marks its Return to India

Web3 & Enterprise·July 28, 2023, 12:05 AM

BlackRock, the world’s largest money manager with $9.4 trillion in assets under management, has made a significant move by joining forces with the financial services arm of Indian tycoon Mukesh Ambani.

This strategic partnership aims to tap into India’s rapidly growing asset management market and marks BlackRock’s return to the country following a six-year absence.

The collaboration between BlackRock and Jio Financial Services, a company built by Reliance Industries Limited, will establish a 50–50 joint venture called Jio BlackRock. BlackRock announced the collaboration via a statement published to its website on Wednesday.

$300 million investment

Both companies plan to invest up to $150 million each in this venture. Larry Fink, BlackRock’s Chairman and CEO, articulated his satisfaction regarding the partnership in a LinkedIn post, emphasizing the significance of expanding BlackRock’s presence in India.

Mukesh Ambani, the Founder and Chairman of Reliance Industries, is India’s richest man with a net worth believed to be in the region of $90.6 billion. The conglomerate is the country’s largest listed company by market share. Collaborating with BlackRock will likely strengthen its position in the financial services sector.

The joint venture aims to leverage BlackRock’s expertise in investment and risk management, combined with Jio Financial Services’ technological capabilities and deep market knowledge. The objective will be to provide “tech-enabled access to affordable, innovative investment solutions” for Indian investors. With rising affluence, favorable demographics, and the ongoing digital transformation across industries in India, the market is undergoing a significant shift.

Potential implications for crypto

This move comes shortly after Jio Financial Services was spun off from its parent company, Reliance Industries. The digital-first service is focused on delivering innovative investment solutions to cater to the growing needs of Indian investors.

While there’s absolutely no mention of crypto relative to this announcement, it may still have implications for crypto in India. BlackRock has progressed from taking a dim view of Bitcoin and crypto to now turning towards this new asset class. It recently filed an application to launch a bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) in the United States. That move is considered highly significant by most market commentators.

Given that Jio Financial takes a digital-first approach and that the idea of the partnership is to bring the latest financial products to retail customers in India, there’s potential for this new entity to bring digital asset-related products to that market.

Indian market re-entry

BlackRock’s re-entry into India’s asset management industry is not the first attempt by the US investment management firm. In 2018, BlackRock exited the Indian market by selling its 40% stake in an asset management venture to partner DSP Group, but the company recognizes the enormous potential that India presents.

Over the past five years, assets under management of Indian mutual funds have doubled, reaching 44.39 trillion rupees ($542 billion) by June this year. The exponential growth in this sector highlights the immense opportunities India offers to global asset managers like BlackRock.

While the launch of the joint venture is subject to closing conditions and regulatory approvals, the collaboration between BlackRock and Jio Financial Services appears to be poised to unlock the power of investing for millions of people in India.

MaskEX Gets Initial Regulatory Approval in UAE

MaskEX Gets Initial Regulatory Approval in UAEThe online cryptocurrency trading platform and wallet provider, MaskEX has been given initial regulatory approval by a regulator in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).Photo by Carlos Alberto Gómez Iñiguez on UnsplashThe trading platform received outline approval from the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) in Dubai, where the company is headquartered. While the business has been around since 2021, this first compliance step is significant as it seeks to build and extend its footprint within the UAE and the broader Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.Regulatory significanceTo say that regulation has lagged the development of crypto assets on a global basis is an understatement. However, the high profile and spectacular crypto business failures in 2022 have really captured the attention of regulators and lawmakers. Many point to inadequate regulation as a key cause of those failures. With that, most regulators recognize that it won’t be acceptable to the broader public to have such a loss impact on ordinary investors in a rerun of the collapses of 2022.VARA has been one of the most proactive regulators in that respect. The Authority has developed a regulatory framework, culminating in its current licensing regimen for crypto businesses. It wouldn’t have been feasible for MaskEX to trade without obtaining regulatory approval.Regulatory actionIn February, VARA issued Open Exchange (OPNX), a platform that specializes in the trading of crypto bankruptcy claims, with a cease and desist order, relative to the establishment of that business in Dubai. Last month, the Regulatory Authority issued an investor alert related to OPNX, warning the investing public that OPNX was not regulated by them and that investing in or using the platform was risky. That culminated with VARA sending OPNXs founders and CEO a formal warning letter. With that sort of action playing out, it’s no surprise that MaskEX has tried to go the compliant route, acquiring that initial approval. The firm is not alone in taking that approach. On May 1, BitOasis, another crypto trading platform headquartered in Dubai, became the first entity to be awarded a broker-dealer license. This milestone event for MaskEX means that it can now complete entity formation, expand its team, secure banking services and generally, open for business. In its application MaskEX requested permission to engage in the activity of acting as an exchange, offer borrowing and lending services, as well as to act as a broker and crypto asset manager.Crypto market to be driven by ME and Central AsiaOn social media on Thursday, MaskEXs VP and Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) Ben Caselin, said that the initial approval forms part of the firm’s application for a Full Market Product (FMP) license. Caselin used the opportunity to post a video offering a sneak peek at the firm’s new Dubai offices. “MaskEX will be the first crypto exchange to publicly disclose their headquarters and even allow the general public to visit,” he said.Speaking at Finoverse Arabia this week, Caselin also said that “the next crypto bull market is once again going to be driven by Asia, and the unsurprising surprise will come from the Middle East and Central Asia.” That’s a prediction that’s being floated by quite a number of industry commentators, and with the US shooting itself in the foot in its approach to digital assets, it sounds like a reasonable prediction.

Hybrid exchange Cube lists Access Protocol (ACS)

CUBE, a hybrid crypto exchange that settles trades on-chain using secure multi-party computation, announced on its official X account that it has listed ACS, the native token of Solana-based monetization platform Access Protocol.  The hybrid exchange utilizes its custom rewards platform, Blocks, to engage users through unique packages for listing traders and token holders. Participants in the listing will be eligible for campaign rewards.  Bartosz Lipinski, CEO and co-founder at CUBE, recently revealed plans around Isometric (ISO), an intent-based transaction network, enabling cross-chain trading to eliminate the need for asset bridging.  “When we started building Cube, we wanted everything to be an intent… Everyone will be able to submit intents to the network and verify settlements on multiple chains using the decentralised MPC that we’ve built,” Lipinski said during his presentation at the Solana Breakpoint conference. “Through the decentralised MPC integration layer, you will be able to actually use the value on different layer ones without cannibalising it,” he went on to share.  ISO will be the platform token powering governance, staking, and decentralized custody, according to Cube's announcement. Both Token and Mainnet launch are expected to happen some time in Q2 2025.  In a related development on Monday, Cube announced its partnership with the Argentinian government. The company plans to explore leveraging the Isometric network as a catalyst for the South American nation’s financial system.
