Yat Siu: Hong Kong’s Crypto Adoption Sanctioned by the Mainland

Policy & Regulation·July 20, 2023, 12:05 AM

In a keynote speech at the Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC) in Paris on Wednesday, Yat Siu, Co-Founder of blockchain gaming and NFT firm Animoca Brands, shed light on Hong Kong’s rapid adoption of cryptocurrencies and Web3 technology, emphasizing its connection to developments unfolding in mainland China.

Driven by the Chinese authorities

Siu argued that the current crypto trend in Hong Kong signifies more than just the actions of the Chinese autonomous area itself, pointing to a larger agenda driven by China’s aspirations.

According to Siu, the Chinese government’s release of its Web3 white paper in May, which positioned Web3 as the future of the internet, carries significant weight. Notably, this announcement came only days after Hong Kong revealed plans to allow retail crypto investments. Siu highlighted that even though China’s white paper did not explicitly mention cryptocurrencies, it is key to acknowledging the country’s commitment to advancing Web3 technologies.

The news of Hong Kong’s crypto developments resonated throughout China, capturing attention even on China Central Television, the national TV channel. Siu underscored the broader implications of this coverage, suggesting that the developments in Hong Kong bear the imprint of higher authorities. He made it clear that any actions taken by Hong Kong would require the approval of China.

Challenging US global hegemony

Beyond Hong Kong, Siu delved into the broader significance of Web3 as a tool to challenge the United States’ technological hegemony. He expressed concerns about the security risks associated with excessive reliance on tech giants such as Google, Apple, and Facebook. Siu argued that countries like Japan, Korea, and China view Web3 as an opportunity to break free from the dominance of US-centric technologies. This motivation is especially pronounced in China, which is actively pursuing de-dollarization.

Reducing dependence on the US dollar represents a key factor driving the adoption of Web3 in these countries. Siu pointed out that the global currency’s position affords the United States significant power and influence, making it crucial for China and other nations to seek alternatives. Embracing Web3 technologies serves as a potential avenue for diminishing reliance on the US dollar and challenging the current financial status quo.

While mainland China banned nearly all crypto activities in 2021, the country has remained one of the largest crypto-mining hubs worldwide, despite the prohibition. The proactive stance of Hong Kong in implementing crypto-friendly regulations has sparked hope that it could pave the way for China to eventually lift its long-standing ban.

However, prominent figures within the Chinese establishment, such as CPIC Investment Management CEO Chenggang Zhou, have recently reiterated the country’s anti-crypto stance.

The rapid adoption of cryptocurrencies and Web3 technology in Hong Kong provides a glimpse into broader developments unfolding in mainland China. Web3 is seen as a potent instrument for challenging US technological dominance, although whether that leads to China lifting its crypto ban is something that remains to be seen.

Travel booking startup targets Bitcoin investors with cashback offer

Travala.com, the Cayman-incorporated company that provides crypto-native travel booking service, has unveiled an enticing offer for Bitcoin investors, involving cashback paid in the leading cryptocurrency in collaboration with the AVA Foundation. This initiative, announced by the firm on the X social media platform on March 7, aims to reward travelers who pay for their bookings in Bitcoin, encompassing an array of travel options, from flights to hotels and activities spanning across three million destinations globally.Photo by Kanchanara on Unsplash10% BTC cashbackUnlike traditional cashback systems, where waiting periods for rewards can be lengthy, Travala.com ensures swift crediting of Bitcoin cashback into users' accounts within 24 hours after the completion of their trips. As part of this offer, cashback will be paid to the value of 10% of the customer’s spend, payable in Bitcoin. Since its establishment in 2017, Travala.com has positioned itself at the intersection of cryptocurrency and travel, offering a diverse platform for bookings across various properties, activities and airlines. With support for over 90 digital currencies, the platform remains focused on cryptocurrency adoption, while aiming to provide value and flexibility for its users. Mass adoption opportunityJuan Otero, CEO of Travala.com, emphasized the growing appeal of Bitcoin to mainstream audiences, buoyed by recent developments like the approval of the first Bitcoin spot exchange-traded fund (ETF) in the United States. Otero sees this initiative as a means to broaden the adoption of crypto for everyday transactions, providing travelers with an efficient way to utilize reward programs. The move towards Bitcoin-based rewards reflects the early stages of an industry-wide shift in travel loyalty programs. With traditional points-based systems losing traction, there's a burgeoning demand for innovative incentive schemes. Steve Hipwell, a contributor to the AVA Foundation, highlighted the success of the AVA Smart Program, which has already distributed over $2.1 million worth of travel rewards in AVA tokens to customers who completed trips booked through Travala.com. By integrating direct Bitcoin rewards, the aim is to capture an additional segment of travelers seeking ways to save on their journeys. Bitcoin stands out as one of the top three payment methods on Travala.com, accounting for approximately 9% of travel bookings on the platform. In 2023, travelers splurged over $5 million in BTC on flights, hotels and activities. Travel Tiger NFTsAccess to Travala's BTC cashback scheme comes with a degree of exclusivity. Users must possess a Travel Tiger NFT and stake 2,500 AVA tokens to activate Smart Diamond membership. This exclusivity stems from the limited availability of Travel Tiger NFTs, with only 1,000 in existence. These NFTs, minted on the Ethereum blockchain, serve as randomly generated utility collectibles. Market data from OpenSea places the floor price of Travel Tigers at 2.85 ETH, roughly valued at $11,165 at the time of writing. This tie-up with the AVA Foundation is not Travala’s first partnership. In November 2023 the company struck a deal with travel industry meta-search giant Kayak, allowing it to integrate with Kayak and enable platform users to search more effectively for travel deals. Back in 2019, the company had struck a similar partnership with accommodation booking platform Booking.com.

Singapore’s Cosmose AI Jilts Stripe in Favor of Near

Cosmose AI, an artificial intelligence-driven retail analytics firm headquartered in Singapore, has opted to collaborate with the Near Foundation with the aspiration of building a blockchain-based payments system centered on low transaction fees as a more cost-efficient alternative to more conventional payments processors like Stripe and PayPal. Payment platform disruptionThe Near Foundation is a non-profit organization responsible for guiding governance, contracting protocol maintainers and funding ecosystem development relative to the proof-of-stake (PoS)-based Near blockchain protocol. In a blog post published to the Cosmose AI website on Sunday, the company set out the extent of its new partnership with the Near Foundation.Cosmose AI uses AI-powered analytics to track in-store foot traffic as a basis to engage with shoppers online. Both companies will work towards building a payment system that facilitates shoppers to purchase goods and services at low transaction fees through cryptocurrency. As part of the deal, Near has made a strategic investment in Cosmose AI, reflecting a Cosmose company valuation of $500 million. In its press release, Cosmose stated that the investment from the Near Foundation means that the Cosmose “is set to apply Web3 principles and further advance the AI-driven retail ecosystem. Cosmose believes that it can leverage Web3 such that users maintain complete control over their data while benefiting from the ecosystem they help to create. The AI-driven company has a suite of retail solutions, including the KaiKai app, which enables retail customers to discover retail stores in their local vicinity. The app also includes an online targeting platform. Both elements are being overhauled with a Web3 facelift, with the Near collaboration enabling the integration of blockchain into the app.KaiKai already settles payments by leveraging Near Protocol with the creation of its own native stablecoin, Kai-Ching. Near Foundation CEO Marieke Flament said that Near will give Cosmose “the means to leverage the full potential of Web3 in a way that is sustainable, transparent, and infinitely scalable.” Moving away from Stripe, PayPalIn an interview with TechCrunch, Cosmose Founder and CEO Miron Mironiuk stated: “ I’m not sure if you know how expensive and slow it is to process online payments. It’s absolutely crazy.” The Near protocol leads with an ability to achieve inexpensive, scalable blockchain transactions. If successful in building this blockchain-based payments system, Cosmose would be in a better position to replace the use of payments service providers like Stripe and PayPal.Mironiuk gave the example of a simple coffee purchase. Small transactions like that can involve transaction fees in excess of 10%. This overhead is reflected in the overall price of the cup of coffee, with the seller passing on the cost to the buyer. In that one isolated example, Mironiuk makes the point that a regular coffee drinker could be spending an additional $200 per year to cover the costs of payments intermediaries.Over the course of nine years, Cosmose has grown to a point where it extends its service to 20 million stores. The firm operates on a global basis, with its team of eighty staff distributed across centers such as Hong Kong, Tokyo, Paris, Shanghai and Warsaw, as well as at its Singapore headquarters.
