Ubisoft Joins Cronos as a Network Validator

Web3 & Enterprise·July 19, 2023, 12:26 AM

Ubisoft, a world-renowned video game publisher, distributor, and creator, has entered into an exclusive partnership with Cronos, a prominent blockchain inter-operating with the Cosmos and Ethereum blockchain ecosystems. Cronos and its native CRO token were established by Singapore’s Crypto.com.

According to a blog post published by Cronos Labs on Tuesday, the collaboration aims to explore the potential of blockchain technology, with Ubisoft becoming a new node validator on the Cronos network through its Strategic Innovation Lab.

27 node operators

As part of this initiative, Ubisoft joins a pool of 27 other node operators on the open-source Cronos blockchain. By doing so, the company aims to contribute to the network’s security and stability. Each node actively participates in the decentralized validation of transactions, ensuring the timely development of new blocks at intervals of 5 to 6 seconds.

Cronos’ strategic approach focuses on collaborating with open-source validators and contributors who have a strong technical track record. Ubisoft’s expertise in developing immersive and engaging gaming experiences through the adoption of cutting-edge technologies aligns perfectly with Cronos’ vision. Notable existing contributors to the Cronos blockchain include Allnodes, Dora Factory, Blockdaemon, and Crypto.com, among others.

Contributing towards governance

As a validator, Ubisoft will play a vital role in the blockchain’s governance and the authorization of network updates. This partnership is a natural progression of the long-standing relationship between the two companies. Ubisoft has been actively involved in the Cronos Accelerator project as a venture mentor, fostering a strong foundation for their collaboration.

Commenting on the partnership, Ken Timsit, Managing Director of Cronos Labs, revealed that Cronos Labs has had ongoing communications with the Ubisoft team for years. He emphasized Ubisoft’s unparalleled understanding of the blockchain sector’s potential and limitations, particularly in connecting gamers and creators.

With Ubisoft’s involvement as a validator, Cronos blockchain is set to strengthen its security, enhance network governance, and open up new possibilities for the integration of gaming and blockchain technology. This strategic collaboration is expected to propel both companies towards innovative advancements in the ever-evolving world of blockchain and gaming.

Positive development

The partnership between Ubisoft and Cronos holds promise for the future of blockchain technology in the gaming industry. It’s a shot in the arm for blockchain and Web3, given Ubisoft’s standing in the gaming industry, and considering that Ubisoft itself and many other headline firms in gaming seemed to have cooled their interest in the emerging space.

In a recent interview, the Co-Chief Operating Officer of video gaming behemoth Sega, had described blockchain gaming projects as “boring” while outlining that the company was scaling back its interest in Web3 and blockchain.

In this instance, however, as both Cronos Labs and Ubisoft leverage their expertise and resources, the potential for groundbreaking innovations and seamless integration between gaming and blockchain is within reach.

This collaboration underscores the growing recognition of blockchain’s transformative power in revolutionizing various industries, including gaming. Together, Ubisoft and Cronos are poised to make significant contributions to shaping the future of blockchain technology and its applications in gaming.

Metaplanet surpasses 4K Bitcoin following stock split

Metaplanet, the Tokyo-headquartered Bitcoin corporate treasury firm, has purchased an additional 696 BTC, following a stock split, bringing its total Bitcoin holding to 4,046 BTC.Photo by Kanchanara on Unsplash$341 million in BitcoinThe company publicized details of its latest Bitcoin purchase on X on April 1. It outlined that funding of this purchase was enabled through the allocation of cash held by the firm as a consequence of the sale of put options.  The average purchase price of the 696 BTC was 14,586,230 yen ($97,694). The average price the firm has paid per Bitcoin in relation to its entire holding of the leading digital asset is 12,943,181 yen ($86,689). Its overall Bitcoin holding has a total value of approximately $341 million. Taking to X, the firm’s CEO, Simon Gerovich, said that Metaplanet’s Bitcoin Income Generation business achieved 770 million yen ($5.2 million) in Q1 revenue, while year-to-date its Bitcoin yield has reached 95.6%. Stock split & bond issuanceThis purchase follows both a stock split and the issuance of bonds worth 2 billion yen ($13.3 million). On March 31, Metaplanet filed a disclosure outlining details of the bond issuance. The company issued the zero interest bonds via its Evo Fund. Buyers will be permitted to redeem the newly issued bonds at face value by Sept. 30. In an X post, Gerovich suggested that the bond issuance was being implemented in order to facilitate the company “buying the dip,” taking advantage of a downturn in the Bitcoin unit price over recent weeks. In a notice filed on Feb. 18, Metaplanet outlined details of its 10-to-1 stock split. The company described how it executed a reverse 10-to-1 stock split last August. This has created a problem for investors as in the interim, the stock price has increased significantly. Consequently, the share price is unwieldy, placing a substantial financial burden on investors. On that basis, the latest stock split will enable greater investor accessibility and improved liquidity. Arising from that, Metaplanet expects that it will gain a broader investor base. On March 30, Gerovich reported that Metaplanet stock is now a component within Betashares’ Crypto Innovators ETF. Betashares is an Australian asset manager with over $50 billion in assets under management.  The Metaplanet CEO suggested that the development pointed towards “growing interest from institutional investors,” while expressing his satisfaction with Australians now having access to Metaplanet’s Bitcoin First Strategy via the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). The ‘Asian MicroStrategy’Metaplanet is being regarded by many industry commentators as the “Asian MicroStrategy,” referring to the American Bitcoin treasury firm that recently rebranded to Strategy, having pioneered a particular approach to building a position in Bitcoin within a corporate treasury. Metaplanet appears to have adopted the same Bitcoin playbook. In an appearance on the Coin Stories Podcast recently, Metaplanet’s Gerovich said that he encourages his friends to put “100% of their net worth into Bitcoin.” Last month, the company confirmed that it was pursuing a strategy to accumulate 10,000 Bitcoin in 2025 and 21,000 Bitcoin by 2026. The firm is now ranked ninth in the world as a corporate Bitcoin holder. Within Asia, it is the leading corporate holder of the world's largest digital asset.

Philippine government introduces document notarization on Polygon

In the Philippines, the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has introduced an on-chain system utilizing the Ethereum layer-2 network Polygon to notarize and track documentation and the expenditure of public funds. The government contracted Manila-headquartered blockchain technology company BayaniChain Ventures in order to implement the system. The firm took to social media on July 31 to provide details on the DBM Blockchain Project.Photo by GuerrillaBuzz on UnsplashBuilding trust into infrastructureBayaniChain Ventures CEO Paul Soliman outlined that the new system “builds trust into the infrastructure itself.” The DBM Blockchain Project connects a DBM internal platform, the Action Document Releasing System (ADRS), which creates official budget documentation, with the Lumen Blockchain-as-a-Service (BaaS) system created by BayaniChain.  Lumen functions as a core framework, enabling government systems to connect securely with blockchain infrastructure. Consequently, Lumen facilitates the tokenization of government documents, managing access to those documents and publishing data to a portal. A third system, Prismo Protocol, interacts with Lumen and ADRS, determining what documentation should be shared with the public and what documentation should remain accessible exclusively to DBM staff. The upshot of the interaction of these systems is that select budget documentation is published to the Polygon blockchain. Soliman stated that the system provides transparency, enabling members of the public to “see proof, not just promises” with regard to the activity of the government department. Integrating blockchain into public governanceThe Undersecretary at DBM, Maria Francesca Montes Del Rosario, took to Facebook on July 30 to confirm that the DBM blockchain initiative had gone live. She described it as the “first ever Transparency Government Blockchain for immutable and verifiable action documents.” She added: “We are using cutting edge technology like AI, blockchain, satellite imaging to enhance how we do public policy and governance.”Del Rosario was quoted by local media as stating that the technology combats the problem of AI deepfakes and fake documents. Another stakeholder in the development of the system was Exakt IT Services, a local company that specializes in assisting government organizations in the Philippines to bring about digital transformation. Exakt was awarded a contract by DBM to act as a technology partner, supporting the project with technical expertise and infrastructure in order to bring about the implementation of the blockchain solution. BayaniChain’s Soliman believes that the new system “sets a precedent for transparency and accountability in public finance.” However, the timing of the launch of the service proved to be unfortunate, as it coincided with an outage suffered by the Polygon network. The outage, which lasted for one hour, disrupted apps running on Polygon. On X, Polygon CEO and Founder Sandeep Nailwal asserted that the incident didn’t prevent the blockchain from operating or producing blocks and with that, user transactions on the network were still being processed. In better news for the blockchain network, Crypto Analyst Lennaert Snyder reported on July 31 that Polygon has reached a yearly high of $1.2 billion in total value locked (TVL), an 80% increase since March.

This collaboration between FAB and JPMorgan’s Onyx division was announced via a press release published on Tuesday (local time). The initiative represents FAB’s efforts towards leveraging cutting-edge technology, while improving and redefining the customer experience. While the initial testing phase was a success, it’s merely a prologue to FAB’s broader plans to utilize the technology for global transactional banking. With assets totaling AED 1.1 trillion ($312 billion) as of mid-2023 and laudable ratings from Moody’s, S&P, and Fitch, FAB maintains a significant presence in banking in the Middle East region.Onyx blockchainJPMorgan launched its Onyx blockchain in 2020 as a permissioned blockchain network. It is understood that the network processes daily transactions to the value of between $1 billion and $2 billion through partnerships established with banks in the Middle East, Europe, and India. Among the services offered by Onyx Digital Assets are tokenized US treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities alongside its JPM Coin.JPMorgan is not alone in terms of top-tier banks and financial services firms who are delving into the world of blockchain. Rivals such as Citi announced its Citi Token Services product offering in September. It’s a blockchain-based service that utilizes tokenized deposits for the purpose of trading and providing liquidity.Meanwhile, payments firm Mastercard announced that it was performing testing on its Multi Token Network in June. For its part, JPMorgan has also been a participant in Singapore’s Project Guardian, a collaborative initiative led by the Monetary Authority of Singapore in conjunction with the financial services sector, centered on asset tokenization.Bahrani partnershipThis latest collaboration follows hot on the heels of JPMorgan’s partnership with another Middle Eastern bank last month. Bank ABC, which is headquartered in Bahrain, became the first Middle Eastern bank to utilize JPMorgan’s Onyx Coin Systems for faster cross-border payments. That initiative also had the support of Bahrain’s central bank. At the time of the launch of the collaboration, Central Bank of Bahrain Governor Rasheed Al Maraj stated:”After working closely with JP Morgan and Bank ABC over the past two years to experiment with cross-border commercial transactions between Bahrain and the US, leveraging the JP Morgan Coin System, we are pleased to witness the soft launch of this innovative banking solution by a Bahraini-based bank.”
