Ubisoft Joins Cronos as a Network Validator

Web3 & Enterprise·July 19, 2023, 12:26 AM

Ubisoft, a world-renowned video game publisher, distributor, and creator, has entered into an exclusive partnership with Cronos, a prominent blockchain inter-operating with the Cosmos and Ethereum blockchain ecosystems. Cronos and its native CRO token were established by Singapore’s Crypto.com.

According to a blog post published by Cronos Labs on Tuesday, the collaboration aims to explore the potential of blockchain technology, with Ubisoft becoming a new node validator on the Cronos network through its Strategic Innovation Lab.

27 node operators

As part of this initiative, Ubisoft joins a pool of 27 other node operators on the open-source Cronos blockchain. By doing so, the company aims to contribute to the network’s security and stability. Each node actively participates in the decentralized validation of transactions, ensuring the timely development of new blocks at intervals of 5 to 6 seconds.

Cronos’ strategic approach focuses on collaborating with open-source validators and contributors who have a strong technical track record. Ubisoft’s expertise in developing immersive and engaging gaming experiences through the adoption of cutting-edge technologies aligns perfectly with Cronos’ vision. Notable existing contributors to the Cronos blockchain include Allnodes, Dora Factory, Blockdaemon, and Crypto.com, among others.

Contributing towards governance

As a validator, Ubisoft will play a vital role in the blockchain’s governance and the authorization of network updates. This partnership is a natural progression of the long-standing relationship between the two companies. Ubisoft has been actively involved in the Cronos Accelerator project as a venture mentor, fostering a strong foundation for their collaboration.

Commenting on the partnership, Ken Timsit, Managing Director of Cronos Labs, revealed that Cronos Labs has had ongoing communications with the Ubisoft team for years. He emphasized Ubisoft’s unparalleled understanding of the blockchain sector’s potential and limitations, particularly in connecting gamers and creators.

With Ubisoft’s involvement as a validator, Cronos blockchain is set to strengthen its security, enhance network governance, and open up new possibilities for the integration of gaming and blockchain technology. This strategic collaboration is expected to propel both companies towards innovative advancements in the ever-evolving world of blockchain and gaming.

Positive development

The partnership between Ubisoft and Cronos holds promise for the future of blockchain technology in the gaming industry. It’s a shot in the arm for blockchain and Web3, given Ubisoft’s standing in the gaming industry, and considering that Ubisoft itself and many other headline firms in gaming seemed to have cooled their interest in the emerging space.

In a recent interview, the Co-Chief Operating Officer of video gaming behemoth Sega, had described blockchain gaming projects as “boring” while outlining that the company was scaling back its interest in Web3 and blockchain.

In this instance, however, as both Cronos Labs and Ubisoft leverage their expertise and resources, the potential for groundbreaking innovations and seamless integration between gaming and blockchain is within reach.

This collaboration underscores the growing recognition of blockchain’s transformative power in revolutionizing various industries, including gaming. Together, Ubisoft and Cronos are poised to make significant contributions to shaping the future of blockchain technology and its applications in gaming.

Dunamu Distributes 4,100 NFTs for Climate Change Campaign

Dunamu Distributes 4,100 NFTs for Climate Change CampaignDunamu, the operator of the South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Upbit, announced that it has distributed 4,100 non-fungible tokens (NFTs) from the Climate-sensitive Biological Indicator Species (CBIS) list in collaboration with four agencies under the Ministry of Environment — the National Institute of Biological Resources, the Nakdonggang National Institute of Biological Resources, the Honam National Institute of Biological Resources, and the National Institute of Ecology. This comes as part of efforts to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity and habitat protection amid the threat of climate change.Photo by Yiju Cheng on UnsplashThemed NFTs for conservationThe CBIS list outlines species whose seasonal activities, habitat area, and population size are susceptible to being impacted by climate change, thus requiring continuous observation and management by the government.Dunamu, along with the four environmental institutions, minted NFTs representing 15 different species from the list — such as the white eye bird and the camellia tree — to distribute to participants of their Resource Circulation Climate Action Campaign. The latest round of NFT distributions was carried out in collaboration with the Honam National Institute of Biological Resources from May 19 to August 11. It is the first of four to be carried out over the course of the year following their initial announcement to do so in May.Empowering climate action beyond boundariesParticipants showed a positive reaction to the utilization of emerging technologies such as NFTs and the metaverse, which enabled them to contribute to climate change efforts without the limits posed by time and space. By organizing fun missions within the metaverse and gifting NFTs to participants, Dunamu and the environmental agencies were able to highlight the severity of the climate crisis while simultaneously making the concept of resource circulation more accessible and easier to understand. Dunamu reported that during the three-month period of the first campaign, the designated campaign space within Dunamu’s metaverse platform, 2ndblock, also racked up a cumulative visitor count of 73,000 users. The second campaign has also commenced and is running from now until October 2. This time around, Dunamu is working with the Nakdonggang National Institute of Biological Resources to issue 1,000 NFTs of four species: the tree frog, barn swallow, kumgang minnow, and little egret. Noteworthy artists will also contribute to creating the NFTs, including those from the Botanical Artist Society of Korea. In order to partake in the campaign, participants must complete the stamp-collecting mission in the campaign space on 2ndblock. Lucky participants who are chosen to receive NFTs must register their issued gift code on Upbit’s NFT marketplace.“As a result of our deliberation on ways to contribute to the environment and society with our technology and resources, many people have shown interest in our online and in-person climate efforts,” said Lee Sirgoo, CEO of Dunamu. He also expressed hopes for continued participation and support for the remaining NFT distributions and campaigns to promote environmental protection and biodiversity conservation. This collaboration between the private and public sectors which combines online and in-person activities stands out as an innovative method for combatting climate change.

OKX Ventures invests in Web3 infrastructure startup

OKX Ventures, the investment wing of the Seychelles-based cryptocurrency exchange OKX, has disclosed a strategic A-round investment in Polyhedra Network. Details of the investment have been outlined through a press release published via PRNewswire on Tuesday. Specializing in the creation of Web3 infrastructure, Polyhedra Network places a premium on interoperability, scalability and privacy, leveraging advanced zero-knowledge (ZK) proof technology.Photo by Precondo CA on UnsplashInteroperability with privacyA ZK proof provides the ability for one party to cryptographically prove to another party that it possesses a certain piece of information without having to reveal the actual underlying information to the other party. Central to Polyhedra Network's product offering is its zkBridge protocol, a system facilitating trustless and efficient cross-chain infrastructure for both layer-1 and layer-2 interoperability. The protocol empowers the receiving chain to verify specific state transitions on the sending chain. This approach ensures robust security without external assumptions, effectively reducing the costs associated with on-chain verification. Polyhedra Network made an initial impact in 2023 with the launch of the "zkBridge Mainnet Alpha." That product enabled interoperability over 20 layer-1 and layer-2 blockchains, including well-known networks such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB Chain and Arbitrum. Distributed proof systemThe innovative strides of Polyhedra Network, which was founded in the United States by James Zhang, Tiancheng Xie and Nikhil Shah, continued in 2023 with the introduction of deVirgo, a novel distributed proof system expediting proof generation. The deVirgo protocol also incorporates recursive proofs which trim on-chain proof verification costs associated with zkBridge. Last month, Polyhedra Network unveiled its Bitcoin messaging protocol with zkBridge, ushering trustless interoperability into the Bitcoin ecosystem through the use of ZK-proof technology. Asian backingBy championing entrepreneurs contributing to the blockchain industry's advancement, OKX Ventures is helping to build innovative companies, bringing global resources and historical experience to the forefront of blockchain projects. It is one of many Asia-centric venture firms to do so. Polyhedra has secured backing from Hong Kong’s Animoca Brands and HashKey Group, Singapore’s UOB Venture Management, NGC Ventures, Signum Capital and Foresight Ventures, alongside KuCoin Ventures. In an initial funding round in February 2023, the UC Berkeley team attracted $10 million in funding. By April, a pre-Series A round had raised a further $15 million. Dora Yue, the founder of OKX Ventures, expressed their honor in participating in the investment in Polyhedra Network's interoperability infrastructure. Yue lauded the creativity demonstrated by Polyhedra Network's team in developing advanced ZK-proof mechanisms, emphasizing the balance achieved between ZK interoperability and scalability. OKX Ventures, with an initial capital commitment of $100 million, is committed to supporting Polyhedra Network's vision of seamlessly connecting the Web2 and Web3 worlds, aiming to attract a more extensive user base to the industry. As the investment arm of the global crypto exchange platform, it dedicates itself to exploring top-tier blockchain projects on a global scale. Its focus is on fostering cutting-edge blockchain technology innovation, aspiring to support the healthy development of the global blockchain space and investing in long-term structural value.

Tether Alters ToS in Singapore Restricting USDT Redemption

Tether Alters ToS in Singapore Restricting USDT RedemptionTether, the issuer of the world’s largest stablecoin, USDT, has made substantial revisions to its Terms of Service (ToS), which may have a significant impact on its user base in Singapore.News of the change emerged on Monday, with Dr. Julian Hosp, CEO of Cake Group, the project team behind Singapore-based Cake DeFi, taking to social media and providing a copy of an email from Tether’s Compliance Department, confirming the change. That notification read:”Tether has changed its terms of service to, among other things, restrict its onboarding standards. Corporates controlled by; another entities, directors, shareholders residing in Singapore are no longer permitted to be Tether customers.”In his commentary, Hosp stated that he wouldn’t be in a position to confirm “if redeeming $USDT into $USD is actually possible, due to being in #Singapore.”Photo by DrawKit Illustrations on UnsplashToS Change in ContextWithin the cryptocurrency ecosystem, eyebrows have been raised regarding the timing of Tether’s ToS change, as it has coincided with a major instance of crypto-related money laundering. Conversely, some argue that the issue could be specific to Cake DeFi. The DeFi protocol had been flagged for enhanced due diligence (EDD), suggesting that the modification in Tether’s ToS might potentially be a result of a partnership issue between the two entities.Stablecoins like USDT play a pivotal role in the digital asset ecosystem, serving as a bridge between the volatile world of cryptocurrencies and the stability of traditional fiat currencies like the US dollar. Any disruption in their usage can trigger a domino effect in the crypto markets. The cryptocurrency sector is grappling with regulatory uncertainties worldwide, and Singapore is no exception. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has been actively reviewing and updating its crypto-related regulations to align with international standards and mitigate risks to financial stability. The precise motive behind Tether’s decision to restrict USDT redemption for specific customers in Singapore remains unclear. Notwithstanding that, Tether’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Paolo Ardoino expressed the view that the matter is being misunderstood. He tweeted:Spreading FUD”Before spreading FUD [fear, uncertainty and doubt] it would be great if you guys did take a look at webarchive… This is Jan 2022…. And if you open the link below: Last updated: May 12, 2020… Again, take a moment to search and verify information before YOLO [you only live once] posting.”Clearly Ardoino is making the point that the ToS change is consistent with existing compliance policy which has been in place since 2020. Notwithstanding that, in reviewing related records, media outlet Protos found that USDT issuance and redemption after May 2020 demonstrate that the firm continued to do business with Singapore-based entities. The publication cited UQPAY specifically, a Singapore-based payments processor. It was found to have issued USDT between May 14 and May 18 in 2020.
