Blockchain Tech Enhances Korean Meat Industry’s Trading System

The Korean meat industry is leveraging blockchain technology to optimize its meat trading system.

On Tuesday, the MOOxMOO Foundation, a Korean blockchain-driven supply chain management provider, announced its strategic partnership with meat processing company PMD, according to the Maeil Business Newspaper.

 

Inefficient distribution

The partnership aims to enhance the transparency of the meat trading system and address issues of inefficient intermediary distribution, particularly regarding payments, settlements, and deliveries. This goal will be achieved through the foundation’s meat trading platform MOOxDEAL, which will utilize soulbound tokens (SBTs) to verify identities of supply chain participants.

 

Rising meat demand

The OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2022–2031 stated that in 2021, world meat imports are estimated to have reached 40 million metric tons (Mt), with poultry imports leading the way. Brazil, the European Union and the United States were among the top meat exporting countries, meeting a significant portion of the increased import demand.

Meat consumption is projected to grow by 15% by 2031, driven by an expected 11% increase in the global population. Global meat supply is projected to reach 377 Mt by 2031, though growth will not be as rapid as the previous decade.

The amount of protein available from poultry, pork, and beef is expected to increase globally by 16%, 17%, and 8%, respectively, by 2031, with poultry being the main contributor to overall meat production growth. The majority of meat production growth is set to occur in developing regions.

 

Costs onto consumers

Despite increasing global meat production, the unsuitable distribution structure in Korea may shift costs onto consumers.

Through the partnership, the MOOxMOO Foundation looks forward to addressing the inefficiencies of intermediary distribution and benefiting consumers. The foundation also envisions its platform contributing to the Korean meat industry by optimizing both business to business (B2B) and business to consumer (B2C) trading.

OKX to compensate service users following flash crash

OKX is set to compensate users after its native exchange token, OKB, experienced a rapid 48% flash crash on Tuesday. OKB price fluctuationThe crash occurred within a brief three-minute window, triggered by a series of liquidations resulting from an abnormal price fluctuation. During the event, OKB's diluted market capitalization plummeted by $6.5 billion. At around 9 a.m. GMT on Tuesday, the price of OKB dropped from $46.80 to $25.10, representing a 48% decrease within 15 minutes. However, the token has since recovered, currently trading at $47.63 at the time of writing. The crash led to the triggering of liquidations for large leverage positions, causing a cascading effect on pledged loans, leverage transactions and cross-currency transactions.Photo by Nicholas Cappello on UnsplashCompensation planOKX responded promptly, pledging to fully compensate users for any additional losses incurred due to abnormal liquidation. The exchange aims to launch a specific compensation plan within the next three days, taking into account users who engaged in on-chain trades. In a statement on Tuesday, the platform suggested that it is committed to enhancing "margin position tier rules, risk management controls and liquidation mechanism" to prevent similar issues in the future. The flash crash coincided with a day of notable price swings across cryptocurrency markets, partly driven by the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust's (GBTC) sale of bitcoin to meet investor redemption demands on its exchange-traded fund (ETF). Additionally, the bankrupt crypto exchange FTX has been selling nearly $1 billion worth of GBTC ETF shares recently, further contributing to market volatility. Focusing on complianceOKX has been actively focusing on regulatory compliance in recent times. On Dec. 29, the exchange announced the delisting of several privacy coins, including Monero (XMR), Zcash (ZEC), Dash (DASH) and Horizen (ZEN). Subsequently, on Jan. 2, the platform introduced additional requirements for United Kingdom users to comply with the new Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) regulations, including the mandatory completion of risk assessment questionnaires before engaging in trading activities. Flash crashes are a common occurrence in cryptocurrency markets, often attributed to thin liquidity distributed across multiple venues. The 2% market depth for OKB indicates that a sell order exceeding $224,000 could potentially trigger another price cascade. Notwithstanding that, oftentimes it can be difficult to pinpoint the precise reason for a flash crash. In 2021 global crypto exchange Kraken experienced a flash crash that saw token prices drop by in excess of 50% over the course of one hour before recovery was achieved. While some suggested it was caused by a technical glitch, Kraken founder Jesse Powell dismissed that notion, pointing instead to the possibility of a large-scale sell-off by a service user. Despite this recent challenge, OKB remains a significant player in the cryptocurrency space, boasting a market cap of $2.8 billion, making it the fourth-largest exchange token in circulation, according to CoinGecko.

This duality of involvement from crypto firm investment to token issuance, demonstrates that the new Thai premier has not been afraid to get involved with crypto innovation at an early stage.Crypto airdrop proposalIt appears that Thavisin’s affinity for cryptocurrency transcends corporate endeavors, as his political affiliation with the Pheu Thai Party, which he joined in November 2022, introduced a novel proposition. The party proposed disbursing 10,000 Thai baht (approximately $300) to citizens, executed through digital currency transactions. The synergy between his cryptocurrency background and this proposal raises questions about the potential influence of his past on Thailand’s future crypto policies.As Thavisin’s administration prepares to assume office by the end of September, the extent to which his crypto engagement shapes the nation’s policies remains a topic of speculation. However, the confluence of his real estate expertise and cryptocurrency ventures offers a unique blend of experiences that might foster innovative approaches.Notably, Thavisin’s journey isn’t the sole instance of Thailand’s government engaging with the crypto industry. Earlier in 2023, Thailand’s cabinet introduced tax breaks for companies issuing investment tokens. These measures, announced in March, aim to generate 128 billion baht ($3.7 billion) from investment token offerings over the next two years.Political importanceThavisin’s perceived embrace of cryptocurrency in Thailand comes at a time when crypto and blockchain innovation is being supported by political candidates in multiple jurisdictions. In the United States, the Republican Party is holding a debate on Wednesday between its eight candidates for the presidential nomination, with several of them being pro-crypto.On the Democratic Party side, Robert F. Kennedy is pro-bitcoin, having recently stated that bitcoin is an exercise in extending civil liberty. Meanwhile, in Argentina, Javier Milei, a libertarian pro-bitcoin candidate, topped the poll in the country’s recent presidential primary.
