Blockchain Tech Enhances Korean Meat Industry’s Trading System

The Korean meat industry is leveraging blockchain technology to optimize its meat trading system.

On Tuesday, the MOOxMOO Foundation, a Korean blockchain-driven supply chain management provider, announced its strategic partnership with meat processing company PMD, according to the Maeil Business Newspaper.

 

Inefficient distribution

The partnership aims to enhance the transparency of the meat trading system and address issues of inefficient intermediary distribution, particularly regarding payments, settlements, and deliveries. This goal will be achieved through the foundation’s meat trading platform MOOxDEAL, which will utilize soulbound tokens (SBTs) to verify identities of supply chain participants.

 

Rising meat demand

The OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2022–2031 stated that in 2021, world meat imports are estimated to have reached 40 million metric tons (Mt), with poultry imports leading the way. Brazil, the European Union and the United States were among the top meat exporting countries, meeting a significant portion of the increased import demand.

Meat consumption is projected to grow by 15% by 2031, driven by an expected 11% increase in the global population. Global meat supply is projected to reach 377 Mt by 2031, though growth will not be as rapid as the previous decade.

The amount of protein available from poultry, pork, and beef is expected to increase globally by 16%, 17%, and 8%, respectively, by 2031, with poultry being the main contributor to overall meat production growth. The majority of meat production growth is set to occur in developing regions.

 

Costs onto consumers

Despite increasing global meat production, the unsuitable distribution structure in Korea may shift costs onto consumers.

Through the partnership, the MOOxMOO Foundation looks forward to addressing the inefficiencies of intermediary distribution and benefiting consumers. The foundation also envisions its platform contributing to the Korean meat industry by optimizing both business to business (B2B) and business to consumer (B2C) trading.

Worldcoin launches in Singapore post India hiatus

The product launch in the Southeast Asian city-state comes hot on the heels of Worldcoin pausing its activities in India. According to a blog post published by the project on Wednesday, Singaporeans can now avail themselves of World ID verifications at five locations through the Orb, the iris-scanning device that forms a crucial part of the project's identity verification process. Adding to its presence in Singapore, Tools for Humanity (TFH), a Berlin-headquartered project contributor and the lead developer behind Worldcoin, has become a member of two prestigious startup and tech associations in Singapore: ACCESS and the Singapore Fintech Association (SFA). Through these associations the project’s developers are seeking to further embed Worldcoin within the region's technology ecosystem. Expanding global footprintExpanding its global footprint, World ID verifications are not limited to Singapore alone. The project has also extended its services to Seville and Bilbao in Spain. Moreover, in South America, World ID verifications in Chile have expanded to Concepcion, Curico and Viña del Mar, joining Santiago. Meanwhile, Argentina achieved a notable milestone, setting a national record with over 10,000 verifications in a single day. In Japan, Fukuoka on Kyushu Island now joins new locations in Tokyo for proof of personhood verification via World ID. Earlier in December, Worldcoin introduced World ID 2.0, an upgrade that builds upon its existing "proof of personhood" protocol. This upgrade introduces "Apps, Levels, and a series of core improvements" to the protocol launched earlier in the year. The accompanying apps enable World ID integration with various services, including Reddit, Discord and Shopify. Market challengesIt's worth noting that despite these positive steps being taken to expand the Worldcoin global footprint, the company has faced challenges in certain markets also. It emerged in recent days that it has temporarily halted its services in India, France and Brazil. Despite the temporary pause, World App continues to gain popularity in India, where thousands download the app each week. The Worldcoin Foundation explained that Orb-verified proof of personhood services has been scaled back temporarily as they work on developing a safe and orderly process to meet the increasing demand for World ID in India. Sources close to Worldcoin suggest a relaunch in India is anticipated in 2024. Despite its expansion, Worldcoin has faced criticism since its launch. Reports from August indicated that German regulators had been scrutinizing the project since 2022, while French officials raised concerns about the legality of collecting biometric data. The authorities in Kenya suspended the activities of Worldcoin within the country a few months ago, pending a review by public agencies in respect of security and data protection. Earlier this month, Tiago Sada, head of product for Tools for Humanity, tried to allay privacy concerns on the basis of the product’s anonymity. Sada stated:“You can use it completely anonymously; the only thing you’re doing is proving you’re unique.”

Animoca Brands makes key appointment to drive Japanese market expansion

Animoca Brands Japan, a key subsidiary of Hong Kong-headquartered Web3 investor Animoca Brands, has welcomed Kensuke Amo as its Chief Operating Officer (COO) to spearhead the company's growth in Japan. Industry credentialsAmo, a seasoned industry veteran who previously served as the managing executive officer at Japanese bitcoin wallet and exchange service Coincheck, officially assumed his role as COO last Thursday. With a proven track record in launching NFT businesses and steering new crypto asset ventures, Amo played a pivotal role at Coincheck. During his tenure as an executive officer from 2020, he pioneered initiatives such as Japan's first NFT marketplace for crypto asset exchanges and an inaugural initial exchange offering (IEO). In a social media post, Amo stated that in the role, he “will be committed to doing [his] best to contribute [to] Web3 technology [so that it takes] root in society.” In 2022, Amo ascended to the leadership position at Coincheck, where he led the NFT business and metaverse business, heading three distinct web domains. It became clear later in 2023 that the company had a specific interest in growing its business in Japan when Animoca Brands Japan acquired an equity share in Cool Cats Group, an NFT-related project. That deal also implicated a collaboration with Animoca’s digital experience label, KLKTN. As Animoca Brands Japan strategically aligns itself within Animoca Brands' larger framework, Kensuke Amo aims to leverage the company's extensive assets and network, including over 400 portfolio companies. His mission involves combining his expertise in business and rule-making within the Japanese Web3 industry to facilitate the integration of Web3 into society. Commenting further on his appointment, Amo expressed his commitment to advancing the Web3 landscape in Japan. He stated: “As a strategic subsidiary of Animoca Brands, Animoca Brands Japan will make the most of its assets and network, including its more than 400 portfolio companies, while combining its knowledge and experience in business and rule-making in the Japanese Web3 industry.” Established in 2021, Animoca Brands Japan has played a crucial role in supporting Japanese intellectual property and content holders in their global Web3 expansion efforts. The company secured an undisclosed investment from Mitsui & Co., one of Japan’s largest trading companies, in June. Daisuke Iwase, the CEO of Animoca Brands Japan, expressed optimism about the collaboration with Kensuke Amo, emphasizing his leadership in the realms of crypto assets, NFTs and the metaverse in Japan. Amo’s industry involvement extends beyond Animoca Brands Japan, as he currently advises the Japan Cryptoasset Business Association (JCBA), Shibuya-ku Startup Ecosystem, Web3 project "OASIS" and real estate information service company LIFULL Co., Ltd. Additionally, he is the author of "Textbook of NFT" and "Non Fungible Me."
