Crypto listing bribery

The individuals were detained by the Seoul prosecution for allegedly accepting about 3 billion KRW (equivalent to over $2.2 million) in bribes to list a certain cryptocurrency on the exchange.

Prosecutors are investigating if these suspects were also involved in the listing of the Puriever token, which is reportedly connected to the kidnapping and murder of a woman in her forties in Gangnam, Seoul.

Single exchange-listed cryptos

A recent report by the Financial Services Commission (FSC) revealed that 389 cryptocurrencies were listed on a single Korean exchange in the second half of last year, a decrease from the previous year’s 403. Despite the decrease, the trend of single exchange listings continued. Exchanges often exclusively list specific cryptocurrencies to gain a competitive edge, as investors typically prefer larger exchanges with greater liquidity.

However, these cryptocurrencies may lack proper review and management and are often highly volatile. The FSC report showed that 34% of cryptocurrencies listed on a single exchange had a market cap of less than 100 million KRW (~$76,000). The Financial Intelligence Unit also warned investors about price fluctuations and liquidity shortages.

High volatile cryptocurrencies are attractive to exchanges, as they can lead to increased transaction fee profits.

Transparent listing

To address this issue, experts advocate for a transparent listing process.

One lawyer in the crypto industry noted that there is a global trend of regulating cryptocurrencies as securities, and if relevant bills pass in Korea, their issuance and disclosure will be regulated. Clear guidelines on disclosures could resolve the issues of single crypto exchange listings, the legal advisor added.

Another industry insider has called for investor caution, stressing the need to consider the potential delisting of these crypto assets.

DMM Crypto shutters Seamoon Protocol

DMM Crypto, the crypto exchange, blockchain gaming and NFT arm of Japanese e-commerce and internet firm DMM, has taken the decision to shut down the Seamoon Protocol. Economic zone concept projectTaking to X on Nov. 15, the project outlined that it has decided to cancel the economic zone concept project, Seamoon Protocol. The project added:”We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the business operators who have provided us with so much support thus far, as well as to all those who have placed their hopes in this project and shown us their kind support, and we would like to offer our heartfelt apologies.” The move suggests a sudden change in the fortunes of the project. As recently as last August, DMM Group had announced a collaboration with Progmat, a distributed ledger technology (DLT) platform for tokenization and stablecoins, with a view towards looking into the issuance of a stablecoin. The stablecoin was intended to act as a reserve currency, providing backing for Seamoon Protocol’s treasury pool while also acting as a price stabilization mechanism. At the time, DMM Crypto CEO Nagato Kasaki had said that the Seamoon Protocol had been launched in order to create a space “where a global community could experience DMM’s cultural universe and co-create new experiences together.” Notwithstanding that goal, no new services are planned to replace the Seamoon Protocol.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashLaunched in 2023, Seamoon Protocol ran on the DM2 Verse, a layer-2 network associated with the Oasys blockchain. DM2 Verse was designed to act as a community hub for the Seamoon Protocol, hosting NFT drops, games, tournaments and collaborations. Activity on Seamoon was powered by its own native SMP token. Changing business environmentNorbert Gehrke, a commentator on the Japanese fintech sector, outlined in a Medium blog post that Seamoon was abruptly terminated “due to recent rapid changes in the business environment that have created challenges for the project’s sustainability.” The company didn’t provide detail on the nature of the challenges encountered which impacted on the sustainability of the project. With the shutdown, issuance of the SMP token will be discontinued. Furthermore, new service applications for the Seamoon Protocol platform have been suspended. It’s unclear what will now happen with existing services which have been built on the platform. The company has suggested that this matter is under discussion.  One exception is the Kanpani Girls RE:BLOOM project, a Web3 game that was the first of five games that had been envisaged for the protocol. The company has confirmed that this project will be terminated.  In-game notices will be provided at a later stage to provide users with advice regarding refunds and compensation for game items. The game will be wound down by the end of January. Once decisions have been made relative to other services and projects, the company will make announcements on the social media channels of those affected services. DMM Crypto received investment from Neoclassic Capital last month, with a view towards pursuing a global expansion strategy.

Former PBOC Governor: CBDC Development Must Focus on Security

Former PBOC Governor: CBDC Development Must Focus on SecurityZhou Xiaochuan, a former governor of the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), has issued a call for China to prioritize security and vigilance against potential misuse as it advances the development of its central bank digital currency (CBDC), known as the e-CNY.Photo by FLY:D on UnsplashSafeguarding the CBDC ecosystemXiaochuan made this appeal during the Digital Finance Forum, which was held in Beijing last week. He emphasized the necessity of safeguarding the CBDC ecosystem. The PBOC has been actively engaged in trials and innovations related to the e-CNY, even rolling out a pilot application in January 2022. The digital yuan’s journey, however, comes with significant responsibilities, particularly in terms of security and prevention of misuse.Thwarting potential abuseZhou acknowledged that in the realm of finance, security has always been a paramount concern, and this sentiment couldn’t be more accurate when applied to the realm of digital currency. He stressed that, as technology costs continue to decline and systems become more user-friendly, the risks associated with misuse also decrease. In this context, it becomes imperative for China to adopt stringent security measures and robust regulatory frameworks to thwart any potential abuse.Zhou underscored the illicit utilization of cryptocurrencies and stablecoins in facilitating various activities, including arms trafficking and drug trade. He pointed out that addressing these issues necessitates a concentrated effort, making it clear that a proactive approach to prevention is essential. The development of the e-CNY has seen impressive progress, with pilot projects initiated in 2019 and later expanded to 26 locations across 17 provincial-level cities and regions, including major metropolitan areas like Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Suzhou.Last month another official from the PBOC spoke to the need to make the e-CNY accessible in all retail payment scenarios within China at a trade forum in Beijing. Digital yuan use is also being broadened to facilitate its availability in the special Chinese administrative area of Hong Kong.Proposing two-tier systemZhou advocated for a two-tier system in the operation of e-CNY, a structure already in place. The People’s Bank of China presides over the first tier, responsible for issuance and regulation, while the second tier comprises commercial institutions such as commercial banks, internet platforms, and telecommunications operators. This dual-layered design promotes dynamic evolution within the digital currency landscape, enhancing service quality and fostering innovation through healthy competition. Zhou stressed the importance of exploring cross-border transactions, an area that entails both technological advancements and policy orientation.Hong Kong has actively embraced e-CNY for cross-border payments, advancing into the second phase of technical testing and preparing to incorporate it into its predominantly local payment system. On a related note, Lu Lei, the deputy administrator of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE), highlighted the programmable features of CBDCs as tools for enhancing monetary policy effectiveness. While current CBDCs are positioned as M0 currencies, strictly currency in circulation plus commercial bank reserve balances, he proposed that central banks could evolve them into M2 currencies. M2 is a measure of money supply that incorporates checking deposits and other forms of deposits that are readily convertible to cash, alongside cash itself.

SK Geo Centric Launches Korea’s First Blockchain-Based Plastic Recycling Platform

SK Geo Centric Launches Korea’s First Blockchain-Based Plastic Recycling PlatformSK Geo Centric, a chemical affiliate of South Korea’s second largest conglomerate SK Group, has announced today the launch of the country’s first blockchain-based plastic recycling platform. This endeavor aims to ensure the safe and widespread use of recycled plastics by customers.Photo by mali maeder on PexelsAddressing environmental pollutionPlastic recycling has emerged as a promising solution to address environmental pollution. However, concerns have been raised about the source and safety of collected plastic waste. Recognizing the demand from customer manufacturers who utilize recycled plastic, SK Geo Centric developed the new platform to provide more comprehensive information than what is required by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS, which the company previously obtained. The ISCC PLUS certification is a voluntary program designed for circular products, including chemicals and plastics, derived from using renewable energy sources. It is administered by ISCC, an independent multi-stakeholder initiative based in Germany. While adhering to the same certification standards as ISCC EU, ISCC PLUS allows for customization to meet the requirements of other markets.Blockchain techSK Geo Centric’s innovative platform utilizes blockchain technology to record and store every step of the plastic recycling process, ensuring transparency and traceability. Intermediate producers and end-users can access the complete history of recycled plastic by scanning the QR code on the product. Information such as the types, sources, and proportions of plastic waste used in a product, as well as the quality of materials, will be readily available. The history records will be stored in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), providing proof of authenticity for the product. This information can be shared via email among the relevant parties. Manufacturers can now demonstrate to their customers the specific recycled materials used in their products.Market growth and efficient distributionSK Geo Centric believes that the systematic management of history records will enhance the credibility of the plastic recycling market, leading to its growth. Transparent records of high-quality and safe plastic waste will facilitate trading. Furthermore, real-time information on the recycled plastic market will enable efficient distribution within the industry.Recycling facilityIn addition to the platform, SK Geo Centric plans to establish the Advanced Recycle Cluster in Ulsan, a city in southern Korea, later this year. The presence of this plastic recycling facility is expected to expand the scale of the recycling market and attract more participants.Na Kyung-soo, CEO of SK Geo Centric, highlighted the importance of trust among market participants in fostering the development of the recycled plastic sector. The company is committed to improving its platform to earn the trust of its customers.
