Upbit lists Tottenham Hotspurs fan token

Web3 & Enterprise·December 21, 2023, 5:06 AM

South Korea’s largest cryptocurrency exchange Upbit listed a fan token for the Tottenham Hotspurs — a world-renowned football club of the English Premier League and home to captain Son Heung-min, who also leads the South Korean national team — on its BTC market on Thursday (KST), according to an official announcement on the exchange’s homepage. Listed under the ticker symbol SPURS, the token is worth about KRW 6,000 ($4.60) as of this writing.

Expanding football’s presence in crypto

Upbit added a total of 23 tokens to its BTC market this year, eight of which are fan tokens associated with football clubs, including Tottenham Hotspurs, AC Milan, Arsenal F.C., Atlético de Madrid, FC Barcelona, Manchester City F.C., Inter Milan and SSC Napoli, which the exchange signed a two-year partnership contract with in January. The team notably houses one of South Korea’s top footballers Kim Min-jae. Upbit also previously listed a Paris Saint-Germain token in 2021, which player Lee Kang-in recently joined this year.

With the most recent addition of SPURS, Upbit now supports a total of ten football club fan tokens — all of which can only be traded on the sports blockchain network Chiliz Chain — highlighting its recognition of the sport’s popularity among Koreans. In particular, the Chiliz token (CHZ) also experienced a 10% price boost on Thursday when SPURS was listed.

Upbit’s focus on football

However, Upbit’s consistent listing of football-related tokens contrasts with its overall modest approach to listing new cryptocurrencies this year. The exchange has introduced just 12 cryptocurrencies so far this year on its Korean won-denominated market, which is just a fraction of the 88 that were listed by Bithumb, South Korea’s second-largest exchange.

Bithumb, which had already been supporting trading for SPURS on its Korean won-dominated market, also saw the token’s price double as a result of Upbit’s listing, jumping from around KRW 5,500 to KRW 11,300.

Binance Labs clarifies involvement in SkyArk Chonicles’ latest funding round

SkyArk Chronicles, a Singapore-based Triple-A gaming platform, recently announced the completion of a $15 million funding round that it suggested was led by Binance Labs, the venture arm of the leading global crypto platform. Binance has subsequently moved to clarify that it is not involved in the latest funding initiative.Photo by Laurin Steffens on UnsplashBacked by Binance since 2021The gaming ecosystem, which has enjoyed the backing of Binance since 2021, expressed excitement about the successful completion of the funding round. On Jan. 12, SkyArk posted on social media platform X, suggesting that Binance led the recent funding round but the project has since deleted that post. The post mentioned the participation of more than 40 institutions in the funding round, including Vividthree Productions, a Singapore-based company. It didn’t disclose the amount it claimed was invested by Binance Labs at that time. The announcement also highlighted contributions from other notable entities in the NFT and gaming space, such as GuildFi Global, Jambo Technology and BreederDAO. Additionally, individual investors like LayerZero CEO Bryan Pellegrino, Tangent Ventures Co-Founder Wangarian and Story Protocol CEO S.Y. Lee were all claimed by the project to have made noteworthy contributions to SkyArk's funding initiative. Binance Labs denialHowever, recent developments have introduced an element of uncertainty. Binance Labs, in an X post on Monday, distanced itself from SkyArk Chronicles' latest funding round. Contrary to the earlier announcement, Binance Labs clarified that it did not participate in SkyArk's $15 million funding round earlier this month. The venture arm reiterated its sole investment in SkyArk during the Incubation Season 3 program in 2021. This clarification from Binance Labs raised concerns about the accuracy of SkyArk Chronicles' earlier announcement, leading to SkyArk posting to confirm the information supplied by Binance. That post states: “We are very sorry for the miscommunication and appreciate the clarification from Binance Labs. We remain focused on making SkyArk a success and will continue working hard to achieve our vision.” Community reactionThe saga has caused some concern within the community, underscoring the need for transparency in the cryptocurrency and gaming industries. Web3 and NFT consultancy firm Vader Research commented on the development, stating:”SkyArk didn’t raise a new private round at all. They circulated the 2021 funding round announcement as if it recently occurred and used that to raise $11m from the public.” In a subsequent post, Vader added that Binance still has considerable leverage where SkyArk is concerned, as it retains the right to decide whether to list the SkyArk token on the platform. SkyArk Chronicles had a history of collaboration with Binance, dating back to 2021 when Binance selected SkyArk Studio for its prestigious Incubator Program Season 3. Out of over 1,000 applicants, SkyArk Studio was one of the nine teams chosen, emphasizing its potential in the blockchain and gaming space. In a follow-up post on Monday, SkyArk co-founder Kelvin Chua expressed his gratitude to Binance for its support over the past three years. The gaming platform, led by seasoned professionals in traditional mobile games, aspires to revolutionize the gaming sector worldwide. Their focus on launching Fully-On-Chain and Only-Assets-On-Chain games sets them apart, with a commitment to incorporating NFTs seamlessly into various gameplay styles.

Silence From Multichain’s Chinese Developers Stokes Fear

Silence From Multichain’s Chinese Developers Stokes FearA prolonged silence from the project leadership behind Multichain, a cross-chain routing network, is causing growing concern among the users of the cross-chain protocol. The network currently holds $1.5 billion in total value locked (TVL).The protocol has experienced five days of stuck transactions, and multiple cross-chain bridge pathways, including Kava, zkSync, and Polygon zkEVM are still offline. Initially, the project’s China-based team attributed the issues to an upgrade that was being fixed. That explanation was changed recently to an ambiguous “force majeure,” leaving users with more questions than answers.Photo by Santiago Lacarta on UnsplashPossible arrests in ChinaAdding to the uncertainty are rumors circulating on Twitter that the core leadership team may have been arrested in China. Although the rumors remain unconfirmed, they have contributed to the growing sense of unease within the community. DJ Qian, one of the co-founders of Multichain who is no longer involved with the project, took to Twitter to share his attempts to seek clarification. Qian mentioned reaching out to Multichain CEO Zhaojun and founding partner Xu Guochang for technical assistance. When asked about Zhaojun’s availability, Qian stated that he was “not available yet.”Users and investors eagerly await updates and clarity from Multichain’s leadership team. However, the team’s lack of communication extends across various forms of social media. In group Telegram messages with the Multichain team, there have been no responses from Zhaojun, and direct messages through the same app have gone unanswered as well. This silence has left the community members puzzled, with little information to rely on.$MULTI price plummetsMeanwhile, the price of Multichain’s native token, $MULTI, has continued to decline. It currently stands at $4.37, representing a 20% decrease over the past 24 hours. The lack of communication and uncertainty surrounding the project have likely contributed to this downward trend in token price. Over the course of the past seven days, the token has decreased in price by 45%.In response to the situation, layer 1 blockchain project Conflux Network has taken precautionary measures by suspending Multichain’s co-mint privileges. This move prevents Multichain from minting tokens on the Conflux blockchain. The Conflux Network has also assured users that it will work with them in case any losses arise due to the ongoing issues.Flight to safetyOther projects and individuals have also reacted to the silence from Multichain’s team. Hong Kong-based HashKey Group, a crypto investment firm, has transferred $250,000 to crypto exchange Gate.io as a precautionary measure. Tron founder Justin Sun has withdrawn 470,000 of the $USDD stablecoin from the Multichain protocol. These actions reflect a growing concern among stakeholders, representing their efforts to mitigate potential risks associated with the uncertainty surrounding Multichain.Furthermore, the Fantom Foundation has withdrawn $2.4 million in liquidity of the protocol’s native $MULTI tokens from the decentralized exchange SushiSwap. It later tweeted out an update stating that the Fantom-Multichain bridge was operating as normal. These withdrawals signal a loss of confidence in Multichain and its native token, as stakeholders seek to protect their investments. As the silence persists, users and investors remain anxious for updates and clarifications from Multichain’s leadership team. The lack of communication and the circulating rumors have cast a shadow of uncertainty over the project, leaving stakeholders in a state of limbo.

Crypto.com Gets AI Upgrade

Crypto.com Gets AI UpgradeSingapore-headquartered Crypto.com has launched an updated service offering which pioneers further innovation through the use of artificial intelligence (AI).Adding an AI companionAnnouncing the addition on its website on Tuesday, the company outlined that it is “furthering its innovation pipeline by introducing its first-ever Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered-initiative, Amy.”An AI companion which is based on OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Amy has been added to help users learn about crypto and the crypto industry, with the ability to provide close to real time information relative to specific crypto projects and tokens. The objective of the company in adding the tool is to provide greater help and support to the average Crypto.com user.Beta phase roll-outWhile the innovation is grounded and driven by ChatGPT, it will be customized and further trained to provide more accurate and more relevant results based on the likely needs and queries of a typical Crypto.com service user. The feature has been launched as part of a beta phase offering. For the moment, customers will be restricted to its use relative to Crypto.com/Price , and that feature availability is being restricted to a group of select users for the time being. The company plans to broaden the AI-based offering over time, with the feature being rolled out on a scaled basis to additional Crypto.com users over a number of weeks. Crypto.com’s Executive Vice President of Product, Abhi Bisarya, said that “as with other businesses and sectors, we see incredible potential and opportunity in the convergence of AI with the crypto industry and our platform specifically.”Bisarya went on to add: “We are excited to be testing this emerging technology through our Amy pilot project. We are bullish on the innovation of AI in crypto, and we look forward to continuing to enhance the utility of Amy and deploy additional AI-powered capabilities.”AI surgeAI has captured the imagination of the broader public in recent months. Central to the surge in interest in the technology has been the roll-out of ChatGPT. The AI tool achieved an active user-base of 100 million in the space of just two months. To put that in perspective, it took Instagram two and a half years to achieve that metric. More recently, TikTok got there in nine months.Crypto.com is not alone in harnessing the power of AI to develop a higher quality product and service offering. At the beginning of March Changpeng Zhao (CZ), CEO of Binance, announced the launch of Bicasso, an AI-driven non-fungible token (NFT) platform. The tool allows users to harness AI to produce NFT-based digital art. By providing the AI innovation with descriptive prompts, the tool then generates an AI-infused artwork for the user.Additionally, last month the global crypto exchange launched Binance Sensei, an AI-driven learning tool that the company has integrated with its crypto and blockchain education platform, Binance Academy. The tool leverages AI to assist users in accessing the Binance Academy knowledge base.Photo by Markus Winkler on Unsplash
