UAE researchers introduce carbon trading platform on blockchain

Policy & Regulation·December 08, 2023, 1:16 AM

Amid escalating climate concerns, the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) in Abu Dhabi has unveiled a blockchain designed to monitor carbon emissions and facilitate trading.

Announcement during COP28

The institute’s Cryptography Research Center (CRC) recently announced the launch of its proprietary blockchain-powered carbon trading platform, showcasing the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) commitment to spearheading global climate initiatives. TII CEO Ray Johnson stated:

“We are proud to announce this digitized tracking and trading platform at COP28, representing the UAE’s drive to become a technology and innovation powerhouse and its commitment to leading the world’s climate action agenda.”

The revelation coincides with the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28), which runs until Dec. 12 and is taking place in Dubai. The conference involves nations making commitments to reduce emissions and transition various sectors toward sustainable energy sources.

Enabling carbon trading internationally

The newly introduced blockchain platform is poised to enable the international trade of carbon tokens, monitor greenhouse projects and incentivize participation in emission reduction initiatives. By leveraging the principles of carbon trading and tracking, organizations will gain valuable insights into their environmental impact. The platform’s deployment on the blockchain ensures transparency and encourages broader participation, compelling major players to fulfill their environmental promises.

The lightweight blockchain has been developed with minimal environmental impact in mind, aligning with the broader goals of the government’s climate action initiatives. This blockchain network allows organizations to record their emissions openly, prompting users to generate tokens that quantify carbon removed from company operations through capture or trading.

Moreover, the network incorporates auditors to ensure the entire process is secure, transparent, accurate and safe. This approach aims to provide the industry with accurate data on their activities without relying on cumbersome third-party expert monitoring.

Harnessing blockchain’s transparency

The move to utilize blockchain technology for addressing climate change aligns with the long-standing belief of the United Nations and various international organizations. Blockchain’s transparency and openness empower industries to have accurate data on their activities, eliminating the need for complex third-party monitoring that often comes at a higher cost.

In response to growing criticism of the energy consumption associated with blockchain technology, certain firms have taken steps to adopt greener practices. Notably, in 2021, the Ethereum blockchain transitioned to a Proof-of-Stake model, reducing its carbon footprint by over 99% by eliminating miners and introducing validators. Ethereum also launched the Ethereum Climate Platform (ECP), attracting participation from industry giants like Microsoft.

Furthermore, cryptocurrency companies have allocated funds for solar-powered digital asset projects, encouraging developers to embrace eco-friendly practices. This shift towards sustainable initiatives underscores the industry’s commitment to addressing environmental concerns.

In a related development, in August, it was reported that the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) had entered into a collaboration with the Industrial Innovation Group and the Venom Foundation to work towards a blockchain-based carbon credit system.

The introduction of the UAE’s blockchain-powered carbon trading platform marks a significant step towards fostering global climate initiatives. The innovative technology not only enhances transparency and accountability in carbon trading but also aligns with the broader global shift towards sustainable and eco-friendly practices within the blockchain industry.

Eureka Entertainment Hosts Opening Event for Coin Musme’s Korean Discord CommunityEureka Entertainment has opened a celebratory event for the opening of an online Korean language Discord community for its upcoming Play-to-Earn (P2E) blockchain game, Coin Musme, which is scheduled for release later this year.Photo by Alexander Shatov on UnsplashBridging crypto and entertainmentCoin Musme revolves around a storyline where characters inspired by cryptocurrencies undergo a process of becoming popular idols at the Coin Musme Academy in order to revive the public’s interest in crypto after a major market collapse. Players can earn non-fungible tokens (NFTs), which are sold through the gacha mechanic. The gacha mechanic allows players to spend in-game currency — in this case, Musme Coin (MSM) — in exchange for a random item. The MSM utility token will be listed on multiple exchanges leading up to the game’s official launch. The game’s official Discord community server called Coin Musme Academy was launched publicly on August 2 in various countries. It is led by Musme-chan, the non-playable official PR character, and operates in a school-themed roleplay style. Participants can find information about Coin Musme on the server, such as interaction events, campaigns, and more.Notably, last Tuesday (local time), a designated channel for Korean and Chinese users was added. To mark the occasion, the game is hosting an event for Korean users, who will get a chance to receive free gacha NFT vouchers that can be used in the game. Users can participate by joining the Coin Musme Korean Discord channel and following the official global Coin Musme X (formerly Twitter) account. 20 winners will be selected through a draw.Users can change their language settings to Korean and join the #general-kr channel, where they can find details about the event. The community is also recruiting Korean ambassadors, who will be responsible for promoting the game through their personal social media accounts as well as those under Musme-chan’s name.Meanwhile, another event is taking place to celebrate the recent listing of MBX, MARBLEX’s governance token, on the Japanese exchange Zaif, and the debut of a new Musme character representing MBX named Marblex-chan. Her character NFT can be found on Zaif’s NFT marketplace.Fostering fun and communityEureka Entertainment emphasized that the goal of everyone making money in the gaming world is essentially unattainable, expressing their intention to instead present a user-centered game focused on providing fun experiences, encouraging user interaction, and enhancing gameplay experiences.

Ethereum Co-Founder Highlights User-Friendly Crypto Wallets at Ethcon Korea 2023

Ethereum Co-Founder Highlights User-Friendly Crypto Wallets at Ethcon Korea 2023Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin delivered a keynote speech last Friday at Ethcon Korea 2023 — a hackathon and conference sponsored by Ethereum for the Korean Ethereum community in Seongsu-dong, Seoul — where he emphasized the importance of making crypto wallets user-friendly by striking a balance between user familiarity and decentralization.Photo by Nenad Novaković on UnsplashEnhancing security and convenienceParticipating in the event via video call, Buterin explained Ethereum’s ERC-4337 account abstraction upgrade during his speech, which was livestreamed on the Ethcon Korea YouTube channel. “The goal of account abstraction — a field that many wallets are currently working on developing — can be broadly categorized into two areas: security and convenience,” he said.Deployed on the Ethereum mainnet in March, the ERC-4337 is a standard that makes it possible to transact and create contracts in a single contract account, paving the way for more user-friendly crypto wallet designs. At its core are features such as easy account recovery, improved security, and customized services like auto-pay and bundled transactions. This provides a more convenient alternative to other crypto wallets, which mostly rely on private keys for account access, complicating setup and recovery procedures especially if a user loses their seed phrase.“Wallets must fundamentally be secure in a decentralized way, but there should also be ways to recover passwords as hardware wallets do,” Buterin stated. “However, many projects still rely on methods such as account recovery via email.”Simplifying transactionsAnother change introduced through the update is gas flexibility. Gas is a fundamental fee that users must pay to conduct transactions or execute a contract on Ethereum. Wallets backed by ERC-4337 can pay gas fees with any Ethereum utility tokens and more, including USD coins (USDC).From a convenience standpoint, Vitalik argued, it is very useful for first-time Ethereum users to be able to pay for gas with the USDC they already have. Sponsored transactions, where applications pay for fees, will be a great way to attract new users, especially for non-financial applications. He further elaborated that in order to transition from being user-friendly but centralized to more decentralized, a combination of a faster but precarious centralized approach with a slower but safer decentralized approach is required. He also stressed the importance of utilizing the various options available in modern technology concerning convenience, security, and decentralization, saying that it is essential to utilize these options effectively, continuously improve them, and take advantage of the benefits.Since 2019, Buterin has used Ethcon as a platform to announce Ethereum’s development roadmap and major technical updates.

Many Countries Are Welcoming Traditional Financial Institutions Into Crypto — When Will Korea…

Many Countries Are Welcoming Traditional Financial Institutions Into Crypto — When Will Korea Catch Up?Although overseas traditional financial institutions are gradually expanding their reach into the crypto market by launching related services and products, this remains challenging for institutions in South Korea, where it is difficult for them to even invest in virtual assets.Photo by NASA on UnsplashMajor developments in other countriesAccording to industry sources, traditional financial companies such as Japan’s largest investment bank and brokerage group Nomura Group, and New York-based investment banking company Citigroup are starting to bring new crypto-related services and products to the market.Laser Digital, the asset management unit of Nomura Group, launched a Bitcoin adoption fund targeting institutional investors, according to an official press release from last Tuesday (local time), which will provide institutional investors with direct and secure access to investments in Bitcoin.Similarly, Citigroup’s Treasury and Trade Solutions (TTS) is piloting its new crypto-based cash management and trade finance service dubbed Citi Token Services, which caters to institutional clients by utilizing blockchain and smart contract technology to provide digital asset solutions. “Digital asset technologies have the potential to upgrade the regulated financial system by applying new technologies to existing legal instruments and well-established regulatory frameworks. The development of Citi Token Services is part of our journey to deliver real-time, always-on, next-generation transaction banking services to our institutional clients,” said Shahmir Khaliq, Global Head of Services at Citi.Earlier this summer, several asset managers in the US, including BlackRock, applied for a spot-traded Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), drawing the interest of the industry as a whole. The SEC has been delaying its decision regarding approval for the ETF and will likely do so until its allotted 240-day review period is over, but industry experts predict that the approval will go through for several reasons including BlackRock’s implicit influence as the world’s biggest asset manager and the SEC’s former court loss against Grayscale for its review of the firm’s spot Bitcoin ETF.These developments are made possible through the commonly held opinion that the involvement of traditional financial institutions in the crypto sphere is beneficial for the industry due to their ability to increase liquidity by moving much larger amounts of capital than the crypto market alone. Moreover, many countries around the world already allow institutions to invest in virtual assets. For instance, the US Nasdaq Stock Market has already listed crypto futures-based ETFs such as Bitcoin and Ether, and there are trust products on the market like Grayscale’s Bitcoin Trust that target qualified investors. Countries like Hong Kong have also gradually begun to allow individual investments in virtual assets again, while institutional investment has always been permitted.Roadblocks in KoreaIn contrast, it remains impossible for institutional or corporate investors in Korea to invest in virtual assets, let alone offer virtual asset fund products. Although local asset managers like Mirae Asset Global Investments and Samsung Asset Management have listed Bitcoin-related ETFs in the US and Hong Kong, such products do not exist in South Korea.Korean authorities also banned financial institutions from holding, purchasing, or investing in virtual assets back in 2017 on the grounds that their investment in cryptocurrencies could stimulate investor sentiment. Also, shadow regulation after the enactment of the Act on Reporting and Using Specified Financial Transaction Information in 2021 practically bars local corporations and institutions from using crypto exchanges, though there is no provision that explicitly prohibits opening corporate bank accounts on crypto exchanges. In response to this situation, an anonymous industry insider highlighted the need for a nationwide drive to support virtual assets and Web3 technology. “This is the time to push emerging industries, and we should not overlook industry trends. The current situation is somewhat frustrating,” they said. “Japan was the most conservative country in this regard, but it has recently opened up and subsequently gained momentum. Korea should also take a more progressive approach.”
