Korean game company Krafton’s metaverse studio OVERDARE announced yesterday via its official blog that it forged a partnership with Circle, a U.S.-based fintech firm that issues stablecoin USDC. Founded in December 2023, OVERDARE is a joint venture between Krafton and Naver Z, a subsidiary of online platform operator NAVER Corporation.

A metaverse platform for game creation

The soon-to-be-launched OVERDARE is a metaverse platform where users can create various types of games ranging from action role-playing games (RPG) to sports and shooting games. What enables users to create games with ease on this platform is “OVERDARE Studio,” a sandbox tool equipped with generative AI and Unreal Engine 5.

OVERDARE adopts the Create-to-Earn (C2E) system, which returns a portion of the sales profit to creators. The creators’ works in the form of NFTs and their transaction details are recorded onchain, strengthening the transparency of transactions and payments.

OVERDARE’s self-developed Layer-1 blockchain mainnet “Settlus” will also do its part in the service operation, which would license the intellectual property (IP) of creators’ works on Web2 platforms.

Stablecoin to empower creator economy

“Circle is excited to be at the forefront of this pioneering venture with OVERDARE to empower the creator economy through the provision of secure Web3 wallets and near-instant USDC payouts on a global scale. We believe this partnership will be a catalyst in shaping the future of digital entertainment, ultimately fostering an innovative Web3 environment for all,” said Jeremy Allaire, CEO and co-founder of Circle.

Henry Park, CEO of OVERDARE, stated, “We’re excited to unveil our partnership with Circle, a company distinguished by its regulatory compliance and trustworthiness. Their robust support ensures that we are able to support the creator economy, and guarantee creators reliable access to their earnings.”

OVERDARE is scheduled to launch a large-scale user test in the first half of this year and officially launch the service in the second half.

OCBC Bank Partners With ADDX to Launch Tokenized Note

OCBC Bank Partners With ADDX to Launch Tokenized NoteSingapore’s longest established bank, OCBC Bank, has partnered with blockchain-centric private market investment platform, ADDX, to launch a tokenized equity-linked structured note.Tokenized equity-based productsThe product is significant in that it represents the first tokenized equity-linked structured note that the cornerstone bank has offered. That in itself gives an indication of how conventional finance will mesh with tokenized products as both the conventional finance system and digital assets space evolve over the coming years. An equity-linked note is a debt instrument, normally in the form of a bond. It’s distinct from a standard fixed income security as it’s a market-linked structured product. That means that it performs in sync with a particular equity stock, a basket of equity stocks or with an equity index.ADDX CEO Oi-Yee Choo elaborated on the product offering: “Structured products are designed to provide investors with unique risk and return characteristics that may not be available through traditional investments, and are an attractive option for investors weighing yield-generating options in the current economic climate.”Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashLeveraging tokenizationBy leveraging tokenization, the ADDX platform realizes cost savings, cutting out counterparties from the process. Additionally, tokenization allows fractionalization of assets and financial products, making a product offering accessible to all market participants. In this particular instance, the OCDC/ADDX product is restricted solely to accredited investors.Singapore-based ADDX currently lists in excess of seventy tokenized products on its platform right now. These range from commercial paper, bonds, real estate and equities or equity-based products. On those products it has collaborated with global alternative investment product specialists Investcorp and Hamilton Lane, telecommunications giant Singtel and securities broker CGS-CIMB Securities. Additionally, it has partnered with UOB, Singapore’s third largest bank, and a number of entities owned by state-owned Singaporean investing giant, Temasek. While the conventional finance world has been skeptical of digital assets and the overarching cryptocurrency and blockchain space has had its fair share of setbacks interlaced within its progression, forward-looking TradFi players are conscious of not getting left behind. That’s reflected in the comments of OCBC Bank’s Head of Global Treasury, Kenneth Lai, in relation to the ADDX partnership:”While we already have a comprehensive stable of treasury products which includes sustainability-linked interest rate swaps, cross currency swaps, structured deposits and green bonds, it is important that we continue to innovate and find new channels for our products. We are therefore pleased to be the first Singapore bank to offer an equity-linked structured note in tokenized form on ADDX. It is the first innovation resulting from a longer-term partnership with ADDX, and we are hopeful that it will lead to more diverse product offerings that are relevant and appealing to the global accredited investor base of ADDX.”Further comments by Choo suggest that the two firms have plans to broaden the partnership to encompass a greater range of products. She referred to more structured products being in the pipeline as the duo seek to exploit their combined expertise and capabilities. As it stands today, just $0.3 trillion in global assets are currently tokenized. That number is expected to grow to $16 trillion within seven years.

Ripple exec: regulatory priority as focus shifts to tokenization in APAC

While the digital assets space moves at a blistering pace, the Asia Pacific (APAC) region is on the brink of a substantial regulatory transformation, with a focus on tokenization as we enter 2024.Photo by CHUTTERSNAP on UnsplashContinued regulatory focusThat’s according to Rahul Advani, Ripple’s Singapore-based Policy Director for the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. The Ripple Labs Executive expressed his thoughts as part of a series communicated by the company last week on social media, emanating from some of its top tier executives. This shift comes amid growing interest in tokenized assets within and beyond traditional financial markets. In setting out his thoughts, Advani reflected on the APAC region’s regulatory focus on achieving clarity for crypto in 2023. Throughout the year, there has been an emphasis on consumer protection, retail investor safeguards, market integrity and business conduct requirements. This regulatory momentum is expected to continue into 2024, particularly concentrating on enhancing retail protections. Shift towards tokenizationThe Ripple Policy Director highlighted tokenization, which converts assets into digital tokens, as an item that is experiencing increased adoption. Notable collaborations, such as Iota’s partnership with Fireblocks to streamline asset tokenization, highlight its relevance in both crypto and traditional finance. The United Kingdom’s venture into fund tokenization further exemplifies this cross-industry trend. Ripple itself has been moving further towards real-world asset (RWA) tokenization. In September, an influential pseudonymous account on X underlined how Ripple was preparing itself to get further involved in asset tokenization. The account stated: “#Ripple now owns properties that can build the infrastructure for exchanges, companies, wallets and apps to connect to fiat rails, banks, trusts, retirement plans, etc., to tokenize real world assets and hold them in safe, compliant ways.”In May the company collaborated with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) on a pilot program with the objective of showcasing an RWA tokenization solution. APAC to advance CBDC and stablecoin developmentIn the stablecoin sector, where digital assets are pegged to stable values, APAC is positioned to lead in regulatory efforts, according to the Ripple executive. While some regions are still formulating stablecoin regulations, Advani envisions more APAC jurisdictions providing the necessary regulatory clarity to foster innovation while ensuring consumer safety. In the broader context, Advani anticipates more focused efforts towards the development and implementation of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), emphasizing the need for a shift from speculative hype cycles. He wrote: “In the coming year, we also foresee a regional trend that involves a more focused effort on developing CBDCs. Stablecoins will continue to be a regulatory priority, with an emphasis on ensuring a high degree of value stability.” The forecast underscores the dynamic regulatory landscape in APAC, where regulators must delicately balance fostering innovation, safeguarding investors and maintaining market stability. Striking this balance will be a defining aspect of the regulatory narrative in 2024. Advani’s thoughts were offered by Ripple alongside those of some of his colleagues at the company, such as the enterprise blockchain firm’s APAC region Managing Director Fiona Murray. These predictions from Ripple executives collectively offer insights into the evolving regulatory landscape and industry dynamics as we approach 2024.
