Bitcoin treasury strategy

In a press release published to its website, Animoca Brands claimed that the deal accelerates the Bitcoin accumulation strategy pursued by DDC. Back in May, DDC Enterprise, a Chinese company listed on the Nasdaq in the U.S. while headquartered in Hong Kong, became one of many Nasdaq-listed companies recently to add Bitcoin to its balance sheet.

At that time, it made a symbolic initial 21 BTC purchase, bearing in mind the leading digital asset has a supply cap of 21 million BTC. The company has set out an ambitious plan to build up a Bitcoin treasury of 5,000 BTC over the course of three years. DDC Founder Norma Chu described the development as a “pivotal moment.”

‘Pristine monetary asset’

On this occasion, Chu described the partnership with Animoca as a “transformative step,” reflecting the companies’ “shared vision to accelerate Bitcoin’s role as a pristine monetary asset.”

As part of the partnership, Animoca Brands Co-Founder and Executive Chairman, Yat Siu, will join DDC’s Bitcoin Visionary Council (BVC). The company established the BVC recently in order to put strategic leadership and guidance in place so that DDC’s Bitcoin-related treasury operations are conducted in accordance with industry standards so as to maximize value creation in the long term.

Siu said that the arrangement enables Animoca Brands “to enhance the value of [its] blockchain technologies and maximize the value of [its] Bitcoin holdings.” Commenting further on the partnership, he added:

“We will focus on developing strategies to enhance Bitcoin’s value proposition, leveraging DDC’s commitment to advancing corporate Bitcoin treasury solutions."

Siu told Cointelegraph that Animoca Brands' belief in the abilities of the DDC founder played a large part in the company establishing the partnership. He said that her background and experience enable her to “bridge the East and West to successfully navigate markets on both sides of the planet,” adding that “she has good appeal and connections to the Chinese market, one of the largest for crypto adoption, while also running a NASDAQ-listed company.”

On BitcoinTreasuries.net, a Bitcoin treasury data hub, DDC is listed as 47th in terms of corporations globally that have adopted a Bitcoin treasury strategy, ranked by the amount of Bitcoin that they have accumulated. The website suggests that DDC currently holds 368 BTC, valued at approximately $43.2 million.

Following its initial purchase of 21 BTC in May, the company followed up with the acquisition of 38 BTC in June. On July 1, it announced that it had raised $528 million to expand its Bitcoin holdings, with confirmation of a further purchase of 230 BTC by July 7.

XPLA blockchain now supported by on-chain tokenizer platform Gall3ry

Cultural content company Com2uS Holdings announced Monday that XPLA, its layer 1 blockchain, is now supported by on-chain content (OCC) aggregator Gall3ry. Photo by GuerrillaBuzz on Unsplash"We are pleased with the recognition of our technology and ideas, and with our collaboration with global mainnet XPLA," said Joseph Lee, CEO of Gall3ry. "We plan to provide various experiences based on our decade of expertise in the IP industry." Empowering multifaceted ownershipGall3ry offers an OCC tokenizer solution that converts off-chain data into on-chain tokens – mainly NFTs – boosting user engagement and revenue while building Web3 communities. It ultimately gives NFT holders a sense of true ownership because they can personalize their social identities and build connections with other users through their assets. In particular, they can display their NFT artwork on the Gall3ry platform to share with the community, which can lead to increased communication and engagement on social media platforms, thus lowering the barriers to entry for NFTs. Elevating gaming experiencesBy supporting the XPLA blockchain, users on XPLA can now experience an innovative and improved Play-to-Own (P2O) aspect of their favorite games. Now that Gall3ry’s solution is linked to XPLA, NFT holders will be able to experience more active and vibrant connections with each other, moving away from the now outdated concept of one-dimensional ownership on XPLA. "This partnership is a significant collaboration for XPLA and our NFT marketplace X-PLANET," said Paul Kim, Team Leader at XPLA. "It will provide new and diverse ways for holders to utilize their NFTs."

Hong Kong’s Development as Crypto Hub May Soften Chinese Stance on Crypto

Hong Kong’s Development as Crypto Hub May Soften Chinese Stance on CryptoHong Kong is making waves in the crypto sector that could potentially signal a shift in China’s attitude toward digital assets. That’s a theory that has been given consideration by crypto analytics firm Chainalysis in a recently released report highlighting Hong Kong’s crypto transformation and suggesting a growing tolerance for crypto within China’s corridors of power.Photo by farfar on UnsplashOTC trade showing resilienceDespite China’s stringent regulations and the ongoing crypto market downturn, Hong Kong’s over-the-counter (OTC) crypto market has demonstrated remarkable resilience, with a transaction volume of $64 billion in the past year. While this is slightly less than China’s $86.4 billion, it’s a noteworthy achievement considering Hong Kong’s smaller population and the challenges facing the crypto industry. The close relationship between China and Hong Kong has led some industry commentators to speculate that Hong Kong’s rise as a crypto hub could indicate a shift in China’s stance on digital assets. The crypto-friendly environment in Hong Kong has not gone unnoticed. Merton Lam of Crypto HK, an OTC digital asset trading center in the city, notes that cryptocurrencies have become an integral part of investment portfolios for banks, private equity firms, and high-net-worth individuals in the region. Even Chinese state-owned businesses are launching cryptocurrency-focused investment funds.Hong Kong cornering institutional tradeWhat sets Hong Kong apart in the crypto landscape is its proficiency in large institutional crypto transactions, with 46.8% of its annual crypto trades exceeding $10 million. In contrast, retail trades under $10,000 accounted for just 4% of the city’s crypto volume, slightly below the global average of 4.7%. This institutional dominance distinguishes Hong Kong from other Asian regions. For comparison, South Korea heavily relies on retail trading on centralized exchanges, while Japan maintains a transaction breakdown that aligns closely with global trends, balancing centralized exchanges with DeFi protocols.A cautionary noteHowever, Dave Chapman of OSL Digital Securities offers a note of caution, suggesting that Hong Kong’s promotion as a crypto hub might be more exploratory, aimed at gaining a better understanding of digital assets without significantly loosening mainland policies.Despite the uncertainties, Markus Thielen, Head of Research and Strategy at Singapore’s Matrixport, believes that Hong Kong is acting as a “testing ground” for broader cryptocurrency adoption in China. The city’s unique position makes it an attractive destination for the crypto asset management industry, setting it apart from other jurisdictions that often view crypto firms as service providers rather than end-users.Hong Kong’s progress is particularly noteworthy when considering the broader context of East Asia’s crypto market. Chainalysis analysis reveals that East Asia’s share of crypto transaction value dropped from around 30% in 2019 to less than 10% by the second quarter of 2022 due to China’s crypto bans. Hong Kong’s recent surge could potentially act as a “tailwind” to reignite crypto activity in the region. The evolving relationship between the mainland and the autonomous territory of Hong Kong may hold the key to understanding the future of cryptocurrency in the region.
