Haru Invest Considers Server Suspension as Troubles Persist

Web3 & Enterprise·October 17, 2023, 2:22 AM

In the wake of halting withdrawals in June, Haru Invest, a Singapore-headquartered cryptocurrency platform, is contemplating the suspension of its server. This decision is part of the firm’s ongoing efforts to streamline operations and reduce maintenance costs.

Cost reduction

CEO Hugo Lee made the announcement on Monday, underscoring the significant burden of server maintenance costs on the company’s finances. He acknowledged that this cost represents a substantial portion of their fixed expenses and is thus a top priority for the firm.

Lee disclosed:

“We plan to suspend the service in a few weeks, backing up all member information.”

However, he also noted that the company is yet to finalize a concrete plan for the server suspension.

The move to shut down the server aligns with Haru Invest’s broader strategy to lower all costs associated with its services. Lee explained:

“Some of the current fixed expenditures include the upkeep of Haru Invest services, the cost of workspace like the office, and the cost of communication with our members.”

The company is actively seeking ways to reduce these expenses and preserve its assets.

Asset distribution

Additionally, Lee assured users that the assets conserved thus far would be included in the distribution to those who have had their funds locked on the platform since June, offering a glimmer of hope to impacted users.

Nevertheless, the announcement of the server suspension has raised concerns within the Haru Invest community. Some users have expressed skepticism about the purported high costs of server maintenance, believing the firm’s claim to be exaggerated.

One user, voicing this discontent, commented on Haru Invest’s Telegram channel, “Server costs cost nothing.” Another remarked: “Servers are gone soon guys, huge costs, 200 USD a month.” According to industry standards, the maintenance costs for running a server for a small to medium-sized business typically range between $35 to $500 per month.

Unhappy platform users

Lee’s statement regarding the impending server suspension follows the platform’s earlier decision to terminate deposits and withdrawals in June. This decision was coupled with the closure of Haru Invest’s offices and the dismissal of numerous employees, as reported by local news agencies.

Haru Invest attributed these issues to the fraudulent activities of the consignment operator B&S Holdings, formerly known as Aventus. While some investors accused the firm of orchestrating a “rug pull,” Haru Invest denied these allegations and maintained its innocence. One user posted the following claim on X (formerly Twitter) last week: “Rugpull. If justice is served, the scammers will be behind bars.”

In a bid to address concerns over its corporate rehabilitation application, Lee appeared in court in September, emphasizing that Haru Invest was actively cooperating with investigating agencies. However, the company has yet to provide a timeline for the recovery of users’ assets as of early October.

Lee also addressed the matter in Monday’s statement: “We are also responding to the rehabilitation proceedings that some of our members have filed with the court as mentioned in our previous announcement, in addition to actively cooperating with other authorities’ investigations. ”

Haru Invest is reportedly facing a class-action lawsuit with disgruntled investors alleging fraud.

Nomura survey indicates shift towards crypto investment in Japan

Nomura Holdings, Japan's largest brokerage and investment banking company, along with its digital asset arm, Laser Digital, has unveiled a survey indicating a significant shift towards cryptocurrency investment among Japanese investment managers.  54% of investment managers favor cryptoThe survey, conducted in April with over 500 respondents, reveals that 54% of investment managers plan to invest in crypto assets within the next three years, aiming to stabilize their portfolios and mitigate risks through diversification and hedging against inflation. According to the survey, approximately 25% of respondents hold a positive impression of cryptocurrencies, particularly Bitcoin and Ether. Meanwhile, 62% view crypto assets as a viable diversification opportunity. Around half of those that responded indicated an interest in crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) while 31% are considering direct investment. This trend follows the Japanese cabinet's February approval of a proposal to include crypto in the list of assets that local investment limited partnerships can acquire or hold. Nomura anticipates a revision to the Limited Partnerships Act later this year to accommodate this change.Photo by Jezael Melgoza on UnsplashNew product development to drive demandThe survey also highlights the primary drivers for future investments in crypto assets. These include the development of a variety of financial products such as exchange-traded funds, investment trusts, staking, lending and other innovative offerings. These developments align with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's "new capitalism" economic policy. Within that policy, Kishida outlined that fostering Web3 innovation is a key priority in a keynote address at the WebX conference in Tokyo in 2023. Metaplanet bond issuanceIn a related move, Tokyo-based investment and consulting firm Metaplanet plans to issue 1 billion yen ($6.26 million) worth of bonds to finance its Bitcoin acquisitions. The firm announced on June 24 that its board had approved the bond issuance, with the Bitcoin intended for long-term holding. A separate notice detailed that the bonds would offer an annual rate of 0.5%. Metaplanet appears to be following a business strategy first pioneered by MicroStrategy in the United States. The American business intelligence firm, now focused on Bitcoin development, holds the record for a public company with the most Bitcoin, possessing 226,331 BTC worth $15 billion. It provides an alternative means through which corporations can gain exposure to Bitcoin investment. Metaplanet is likely to fulfill a similar role within the Japanese market, meeting that developing investment need identified among Japanese investment managers in Nomura’s survey. While the Nomura survey findings are largely positive, there were a number of concerns expressed by investment managers also in relation to crypto. Among them were concerns about counterparty risk, regulatory requirements and high asset volatility. However, the report suggests that there is a path through which these concerns can be minimized. The report states: “These hurdles could soon be lowered, as Japan’s digital asset laws and regulations are rapidly being developed, enabling increased engagement from institutional investors in the future.” In December, the Japanese government approved a tax regime revision to exempt corporations from paying tax on unrealized crypto gains if they hold the assets long-term.

Upbit lists Tottenham Hotspurs fan token

Upbit lists Tottenham Hotspurs fan tokenSouth Korea’s largest cryptocurrency exchange Upbit listed a fan token for the Tottenham Hotspurs — a world-renowned football club of the English Premier League and home to captain Son Heung-min, who also leads the South Korean national team — on its BTC market on Thursday (KST), according to an official announcement on the exchange’s homepage. Listed under the ticker symbol SPURS, the token is worth about KRW 6,000 ($4.60) as of this writing.Photo by Memories on 35mm on UnsplashExpanding football’s presence in cryptoUpbit added a total of 23 tokens to its BTC market this year, eight of which are fan tokens associated with football clubs, including Tottenham Hotspurs, AC Milan, Arsenal F.C., Atlético de Madrid, FC Barcelona, Manchester City F.C., Inter Milan and SSC Napoli, which the exchange signed a two-year partnership contract with in January. The team notably houses one of South Korea’s top footballers Kim Min-jae. Upbit also previously listed a Paris Saint-Germain token in 2021, which player Lee Kang-in recently joined this year. With the most recent addition of SPURS, Upbit now supports a total of ten football club fan tokens — all of which can only be traded on the sports blockchain network Chiliz Chain — highlighting its recognition of the sport’s popularity among Koreans. In particular, the Chiliz token (CHZ) also experienced a 10% price boost on Thursday when SPURS was listed.Upbit’s focus on footballHowever, Upbit’s consistent listing of football-related tokens contrasts with its overall modest approach to listing new cryptocurrencies this year. The exchange has introduced just 12 cryptocurrencies so far this year on its Korean won-denominated market, which is just a fraction of the 88 that were listed by Bithumb, South Korea’s second-largest exchange.Bithumb, which had already been supporting trading for SPURS on its Korean won-dominated market, also saw the token’s price double as a result of Upbit’s listing, jumping from around KRW 5,500 to KRW 11,300.
