Gemini to Invest $24M as Part of India Expansion Plans

Web3 & Enterprise·September 28, 2023, 10:04 AM

US-headquartered crypto exchange platform Gemini is exploring further operational expansion abroad, turning its attention specifically right now to India.

The company first forayed into the world’s most populous country back in April with the announcement of the imminent launch of an engineering center.

Having tested the waters in the South Asian country, the crypto exchange has decided to broaden its presence in the nation, according to a blog post published to the firm’s website on Tuesday. With a capital influx of Rs. 200 crore ($24 million), the exchange will be growing its development center in Gurgaon, a city that serves as an integral part of India’s National Capital Region (NCR).

70-member Gurgaon team

Gemini has already onboarded over 70 staff members to its Gurgaon team. The company is actively hiring for more roles to fill its internal verticals, including tech development, finance, and compliance. In the next two years, the exchange plans to invest up to Rs. 200 crore ($24 million) in its Gurgaon facility, demonstrating a significant commitment where the Indian market is concerned.

In an official statement, the company stated:

“India has long been regarded as a hub for bar-raising talent by the world’s top technology companies, and we are thrilled to share that we are deepening our investment in the country. We are delighted to build on that announcement and reveal that we have opened our office within the Cyber Hub at Campus Cyber Greens.”

The business is looking to tap into India’s rich pool of engineering talent to bolster its ecosystem with fresh Web3 solutions, inclusive of resource allocation towards optimized platform security.

Singapore expansion

Pravjit Tiwana had previously been welcomed on board as the CEO of Gemini’s Asia-Pacific (APAC) operations earlier this year. He was previously the global chief technology officer (CTO) at the crypto exchange. Alongside this expansion, the company’s previous announcement in June to expand operations in Singapore is a task that also falls within Tiwana’s remit. At the time, the firm expressed the view that the APAC market will be crucial in securing the next phase of growth for the enterprise.

Gemini signaled back in June that it intended to expand its reach in the Middle East also by pursuing a trading license in the United Arab Emirates.

“India is undoubtedly a leading global hub for entrepreneurship and technological development. We are thrilled to build Gemini’s presence in India as we continue on our mission to unlock the next era of financial, creative, and personal freedom with crypto and Web3 innovation,” Gemini’s blog added, praising the ‘Startup India’ initiative.

Growing interest in Indian market

Previously, other crypto platforms like Coinbase and Algorand have also shown interest in onboarding software talent from India onto their teams. Amid the backdrop of India coming closer to possibly getting a concrete set of crypto rules around December this year, other crypto firms have also stepped into the market.

In June, Gibraltar-based crypto-friendly bank Xapo announced its entrance into the Indian market. The OKX crypto exchange based in Seychelles is also scheduling a full-fledged expansion into the country.

Indian Railways to issue NFT train tickets for world’s largest religious festival

Indian Railways (IR), the state-owned manager of India’s railway network, plans to issue non-fungible token (NFT)-based train tickets to transport pilgrims to Maha Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious festival. The Hindu festival is of particular significance given that it only occurs once every 144 years. ChainCode Consulting partnership According to a report published by Indian news outlet Pune.news on Jan. 13, IR has collaborated with ChainCode Consulting, a Bangalore-headquartered enterprise blockchain development and consulting firm, to provide the digital tickets. The Polygon blockchain has been chosen as the network upon which the NFT tickets will be minted. The tickets will then be made available to end users via NFTtrace, a real-world assets (RWA) tokenization and traceability platform run by ChainCode Consulting.Photo by Choong Deng Xiang on UnsplashLong-running collaborationService users and railway personnel will be free to check the validity of tickets on the public blockchain. This announcement is just the latest installment of a long-running collaboration between ChainCode Consulting and IR. In March 2024, a similar project was pursued by both parties. On that occasion, the collaboration involved the release of a series of NFT tickets for use on a train line running from Lucknow, the capital of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, to the Indian capital, New Delhi.  In that instance, NFTs were minted on the Hyperledger blockchain. A previous collaboration, earlier in 2024, saw NFTs minted on Polygon for digital tickets covering journeys to the sacred Hindu city of Ayodhya. Commenting on the choice of Polygon relative to this latest collaboration, Alok Gupta, CEO of ChainCode Consulting, stated: “By partnering with IRCTC and leveraging the Polygon blockchain, we are enabling a digital-first experience that complements the spiritual and traditional significance of the Mahakumbh while introducing a new level of engagement through NFTs.” Polygon is an Ethereum ecosystem scaling network. With that, it has fast throughput and low gas fees and it's on this basis that it’s understood that Polygon was chosen in this instance. Aishwary Gupta, global head of payment and fintech at Polygon Labs, the key developer behind the Polygon blockchain, told Cointelegraph that public blockchains are playing an important role in doing away with middlemen and intermediaries.  The Polygon Labs executive stated that at both state and central government levels in India, Polygon has been used on a number of projects. He added: ”With its low cost and high throughput, we are sure that the NFTs being issued around Maha Kumbh Mela would be yet another great success.” $94 billion market opportunityTicketing remains one of the proposed use cases for blockchain technology that has the potential to gain traction. That potential hasn’t gone unnoticed by ticketing industry leader Ticketmaster. In 2023 the company rolled out token-gated ticket sales. The feature enables artists to reward fans who hold NFTs with access to exclusive pre-sale events, prime concert seating and many other incentives and rewards. NFT technology offers a solution to a number of issues experienced within the events industry, including ticket scalping, fake tickets and security issues. The live events business is a $94 billion industry, underscoring the opportunity available to be exploited by innovative NFT-based ticketing startups.

New York Bans CoinEx While Seizing Crypto Assets

New York Bans CoinEx While Seizing Crypto AssetsCoinEx, a Hong Kong-based cryptocurrency exchange, has been banned from operating in the US state of New York by Attorney General Letitia James. The ban comes after the exchange allegedly failed to register as a securities and commodities brokerage and falsely represented itself as an exchange.Photo by Jan van der Wolf on Pexels$1.7 million seizureThat’s according to a statement published by the Office of the New York State Attorney General on Thursday. As part of an agreement reached between the parties, over $1.7 million worth of CoinEx’s funds have been seized.Under the terms of the agreement, approximately $1.1 million will be returned to 4,691 investors from New York, and an additional $600,000 will be paid in penalties to the state. To prevent access by New York IP addresses, CoinEx must implement geo-blocking. Moreover, the exchange is forbidden from creating new accounts for customers based in the United States.Trade prohibitionThis recent development resolves a lawsuit filed against CoinEx in February by the New York state. The state accused the exchange of misleading investors and failing to register with local authorities. In accordance with the consent order, CoinEx is now prohibited from offering, selling, or purchasing securities and commodities in New York and cannot make its platform available in the state.James emphasized the consequences for crypto companies that disregard New York’s laws and put investors at risk. The agreement serves as a warning that her office will continue to crack down on such companies. CoinEx users have a 90-day period to recover their crypto funds directly from the exchange. After this period, eligible investors can request fiat currency refunds by emailing coinexrefund@ag.ny.gov. Refunds will be provided in cryptocurrency or cash equivalents held in accounts as of April 25.CoinEx faced a lawsuit in the New York Supreme Court on February 22, where Attorney General James alleged that the exchange engaged in fraudulent practices and violated the state’s Martin Act, known for its strict anti-fraud provisions. The complaint included tokens such as Amp, LBRY Credits (LBC), Rally (RLY), and Terra.Harsh stanceThe banning of CoinEx in New York highlights the regulatory scrutiny surrounding cryptocurrency exchanges and the importance of compliance with local laws and regulations. On the one hand, the enforcement actions taken by authorities aim to protect investors and ensure the integrity of the financial system. However, the state of New York has been particularly harsh in its dealings with crypto companies. As today’s statement reveals, the New York Attorney General has taken action previously against crypto exchange Kucoin, crypto lending platform Nexo, and USDT stablecoin issuer Tether. These actions tie in with the current anti-crypto regulatory pushback that prevails in the United States right now. Other state agencies, including the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) who last week sued global crypto exchanges Coinbase and Binance, the Federal Reserve, the Department of the Treasury, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), have all conspired to crack down on the industry in the US in recent months.
