Crypto Exchange Korbit Raises Daily KRW Deposit Limits From 300K to 5M

Web3 & Enterprise·September 26, 2023, 5:15 AM

Korbit, one of the leading cryptocurrency exchanges in South Korea, raised the daily deposit limit for its customers as of 16:00 KST on September 25. This move aligns with the early implementation of the operation guidelines of real-name bank accounts for cryptocurrencies, which is scheduled to be introduced in January next year. Korbit collaborates with Shinhan Bank, utilizing its real-name accounts to facilitate Korean won transactions.

User protection and AML

The operation guidelines have been established to fortify the protection of virtual asset users and to bolster efforts against money laundering. Financial authorities, the Korea Federation of Banks, and cryptocurrency exchanges have collaborated to initiate these measures at every local exchange starting next January. Meanwhile, exchanges are obliged to maintain reserves in their banks beginning this month, ensuring they are poised to provide compensation for involuntary losses in the event of hacking incidents or system failures.

Investor inconvenience and market confusion

Since the introduction of the real-name bank account system in 2018, banks and crypto exchanges have had different terms of use and user protection measures, leading to varied deposit and withdrawal limits as well as reserve levels across different exchanges. These inconsistencies have resulted in inconvenience to customers and have sown confusion in the market. In response, the entities in question have agreed to implement a shared set of guidelines for real-name bank accounts from January next year.

Daily limit of KRW 300K to KRW 5M

With the implementation of these guidelines, Korbit has elevated the current daily deposit limits from KRW 300,000 (approximately $222) and KRW 1.5 million to KRW 5 million. Moreover, once the bank authenticates the user’s transaction purpose — for instance, purchases of KRW 5 million or more in virtual assets in a month following the initial KRW deposit — and verifies the source of the funds, the constrained account can transition to a standard account. This adjustment allows the daily deposit and withdrawal limit of up to KRW 500 million.

The limitations associated with constrained and standard accounts apply solely to fund transfers between the crypto exchange and the bank. When holders of Shinhan accounts initiate fund transfers to accounts in other banks, the limitations imposed by Shinhan continue to apply.

Oh Sejin, CEO of Korbit, expressed enthusiasm that the higher deposit limit enabled by the new guidelines would improve investor convenience and draw in new customers. He added that the crypto exchange is committed to collaboration with Shinhan Bank, aiming to enhance user protection and anti-money laundering (AML) measures.

Binance Japan Sets Out Market Vision

Binance Japan Sets Out Market VisionDuring a virtual business discussion recently led by Takeshi Chino, the Head of Binance Japan, the firm provided insights into its vision within the Japanese market.Photo by David Edelstein on UnsplashIntegrating international version featuresSince its recent launch, Binance Japan has primarily been offering cryptocurrency spot trading and its “Simple Earn” crypto lending service. Expansion into leverage trading is on the horizon, aligning with the international version once regulatory requirements are met.Other key services that Binance has been offering on an international basis include its Initial Exchange Offering (IEO) platform “Launchpad” for emerging projects, staking services, and an NFT marketplace. While the exact timeline for introducing these services in Japan remains undisclosed, Chino assured attendees that there would be a gradual roll-out in compliance with local regulations. The vision that has been set out will see a particular focus being placed on potential collaborations involving stablecoins. Elaborating further on the company’s plans, Chino outlined that domestic expansion would encompass equities management, leverage trading, and the integration of features present in Binance’s global version. In reporting on the event, local crypto media outlet Coinpost explained that Chino further expressed Binance Japan’s ambition to establish connections between its ecosystem and Japanese private entities and government bodies, going beyond the scope of crypto transactions.Focusing on stablecoinsCentral to this vision is the integration of stablecoins into the existing financial infrastructure, with active partnerships leveraging Binance’s technology stack and track record.Chino recognizes the recent regulatory developments regarding yen-based stablecoins as a positive development for business expansion. While Japan’s stablecoin issuance framework remains stringent, collaborations for joint developments are being considered. The potential of yen-backed stablecoins for trade settlements and programmable payments is also being explored.Expanding crypto asset offeringBinance Japan has already made a significant mark by managing 34 equities since its inception, establishing itself as a leader in the Japanese equities landscape. Notably, Binance’s native BNB (Build and Build) token and the Algorand ALGO token have made successful entries into the Japanese market. In its take on the online briefing, Bloomberg outlined that Chino has an initial target of one hundred crypto assets. The global version of the company offers in excess of 350 assets to its users. In adding new assets, a focus will be placed on those particular digital assets that resonate with Japanese market preferences.Other short-to-mid-term goals include facilitating Security Token Offering (STO) payments through stablecoins, merchant onboarding for “Binance Pay,” educational initiatives, among others.Binance Japan emerged following the acquisition by Binance of Sakura Exchange Bitcoin (SEBC), a local crypto exchange, in November of last year. A regulatory backlash following a number of high profile crypto platform failures in 2022 led to Japanese regulators issuing Binance with a warning letter for failing to attain full registration.A response to past difficulties in Japan, in particular relative to the failure of Mt.Gox in 2014, meant that crypto market traders were protected better by comparison with market participants overseas.

China Launches National Blockchain Center to Develop Talent

China Launches National Blockchain Center to Develop TalentHaving initially been announced in February, China’s National Blockchain Technology Innovation Center was formally launched on Wednesday. The center is based in China’s capital city of Beijing, and plans to collaborate with existing crypto and blockchain businesses, think tanks that concern themselves with blockchain and digital assets, and local universities in an effort to further advance blockchain technology within China’s borders.Photo by Hanson Lu on UnsplashEnterprise blockchain developmentEncompassed within the National Blockchain Technology Innovation Center lies the Beijing Academy of Blockchain and Edge Computing. The academy’s leading achievement to date has been its development of the ChainMaker blockchain. The state-sponsored blockchain incorporates clusters of high performance servers of 1,000 units or more, and it claims to achieve a throughput of 240 million transactions per second. The blockchain is being geared towards enterprise use, and the sharing of information between businesses. The ChainMaker project team has also developed an immutable storage mechanism called “Hong”. It’s understood that the team plans to open-source that technology in due course. The storage system is being used by around 80 government departments in Beijing to collect and store data.ChainMaker is collaborating with fifty corporations, with most of them being state-owned entities.Linking up separate networksIn these efforts to advance China’s blockchain sector, the Center is being backed by China’s Ministry of Science and Technology. One of its key objectives is to ensure that the research center enables a comprehensive, nation-wide network to link together disparate blockchain systems, including those already built, within China. Furthermore, the Chinese authorities want the Center to support existing industries, serving them by bringing blockchain technology to their operations, and in that way advancing businesses with that added competitive edge.Zheng Zhiming, a leading academic at the Chinese Academy of Sciences said that existing blockchain projects are isolated from each other. Zhiming believes that this is holding them back, impeding their growth. This latest approach through the National Blockchain Technology Center is geared to address that shortcoming. It’s interesting to note that while the Chinese authorities have taken a very hard line in relation to cryptocurrencies, they are very much trying to advance their blockchain sector. Likewise, they are pulling out the stops for China’s central bank digital currency (CBDC) project, the digital yuan or e-CNY.It emerged last week that the Bank of China has partnered with French international banking group BNP Paribas, in an effort to promote further use of the digital yuan among the bank’s corporate clients.A dual strategyMeanwhile in China’s autonomous territory of Hong Kong, the city has been given an implicit mandate from the Chinese central government to open its doors to cryptocurrency-related businesses. Cleverly, the Chinese are covering both eventualities. While they don’t want citizens within mainland China to have access to decentralized cryptocurrencies and dApps, they still don’t want to miss out on any upside that the technology and its innovation may bring. On that basis, Hong Kong has been given the space and freedom to compete for crypto business on a global basis, competing in that respect with other emerging centers such as Singapore and Dubai.
