A space for creativity and monetization

The Sandbox is a global metaverse platform that allows users to easily create and participate in games, avatars, and items. It also provides free three-dimensional content creation tools called VoxEdit and Game Maker, and users can monetize their content. It has partnered with over 400 major companies, including Netmarble, LINE Studio, Ubisoft, and Zynga, securing some five million subscribers worldwide. “We expect that users will be able to enjoy a new Web3 experience within the metaverse, where they can create their own content,” said Max Minchul Shin, CEO of Burrito Wallet.

Elevating the metaverse experience

Through the new partnership, Burrito Wallet will support wallet integration within The Sandbox’s platform by unifying the on-chain experience across services. Burrito Wallet users will thus have more convenient access to various content within The Sandbox, including LAND — the platform’s virtual real estate space for interacting and showcasing creativity — as well as personalized avatars and assets, and an NFT marketplace. Additionally, the company plans to enhance wallet utility by supporting the multi-chain functionality of SAND, The Sandbox’s utility token.

“Our partnership with Burrito Wallet will make it easier and more convenient for users to enjoy The Sandbox,” said Cindy Lee, CEO of The Sandbox Korea.

“We will continue to collaborate with companies from various fields to advance the Web3 market and establish ourselves as a distinguished wallet service in the global market,” Shin added.

Rotonda’s global initiatives

Rotonda is actively collaborating with global projects to promote the mass adoption of Web3 and blockchain technology. Last month, it launched the iOS version of Burrito Wallet in a move to expand availability for Web3 users on all operating systems. The company also recently co-hosted Next Block 2023 with its parent company Bithumb to promote business collaboration and build an ecosystem for accelerating Web3 projects.

China advances digital yuan adoption in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong

Chinese authorities are unveiling new strategies to expedite the integration of the digital yuan in selected districts in Beijing and Shanghai, with a separate initiative furthering cross-border use of the e-CNY with Hong Kong.Photo by Yigang Zhou on UnsplashPudong New AreaAccording to the Xinhua news agency, the Chinese authorities have introduced an extensive reform initiative for Shanghai's Pudong New Area, which is scheduled to span from 2023 to 2027. This five-year plan, issued by the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee and the General Office of the State Council, aims to position the Pudong District as a leader in modernization. The reform plan places a strong emphasis on the pilot implementation of the digital yuan across various sectors in Pudong. As part of the plan, Pudong will be granted new authorities to evolve into an international hub. Key aspects of the reform include the integration of digital yuan into trade settlement, e-commerce payments, carbon trading and green power trading. This move is expected to standardize and broaden the application scenarios of the digital currency. Beijing's ‘Digital Yuan Adoption Demonstration Zone’Simultaneously, a member of the Beijing Municipal Committee and Hong Kong Professionals Association president, Fung Kwok-yau, has advocated for the swift progress of Beijing's "Digital Yuan Adoption Demonstration Zone." In a recent interview, Fung suggested expanding the digital yuan's application by installing e-CNY terminals in local stores at popular tourist destinations, malls and shopping districts. Fung acknowledges challenges in promoting the digital yuan, including late entry into the contactless payment market, high user acceptance barriers and difficulties in sustaining subsidies. To overcome these challenges, Fung recommends that culture and tourism departments take the lead in popularizing the concept of central bank digital currency (CBDC) and educating the public on digital yuan usage. To encourage small and medium-sized merchants already using digital yuan terminals, Fung proposes providing incentives to help consumers understand and use the currency. He emphasizes the need for a regular promotion mechanism and measures such as electronic consumption coupons to boost citywide adoption. PBoC cross-border e-CNY pilotIn a related development, the People's Bank of China (PBoC) plans to expand its cross-border digital yuan pilot in Hong Kong. Deputy Governor Xuan Changneng expressed the intention to deepen the cross-border e-CNY pilot to enhance convenience for businesses in both Hong Kong and mainland China. According to a social media post from Chinese news outlet Caixin, the PBoC will collaborate closely with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) to introduce new policy measures, including financial services and cooperation initiatives to drive CBDC adoption. Areas of cooperation between PBoC and HKMA include providing support for institutions participating in the pilot, increasing convenience for digital yuan users, expanding the number of Hong Kong-based banks handling e-CNY and exploring new digital yuan-powered cross-border remittance services for micro-payments. The goal is to develop digital yuan services that align more closely with the habits of Hong Kong residents and promote interoperability with Hong Kong payment systems. The PBoC aims to make further progress in key scenarios such as cross-border e-commerce and education.

OKX Enters Final Stages of Securing VASP License in Hong Kong

OKX Enters Final Stages of Securing VASP License in Hong KongSeychelles-headquartered cryptocurrency exchange OKX is on the verge of securing its virtual asset service provider (VASP) license in Hong Kong, with approval expected as early as June 2024.That’s according to Li Zhikai, OKX’s Global Chief Commercial Officer, who, in a recent interview with Infocast, shed light on the exchange’s preparations, including collaborations with banks and other related technological integrations.Photo by Simon Zhu on UnsplashThe Road to a VASP LicenseObtaining a VASP license in Hong Kong is no easy feat. Regulatory requirements impose a 30% cap on investors’ crypto investments, ensuring they do not risk more than one-third of their net income.Furthermore, the Hong Kong regulator has implemented stringent crypto asset storage protocols, mandating that crypto exchanges securely store 98% of their crypto assets in cold wallets. Additionally, they must provide insurance and compensation arrangements to protect clients’ interests.Cost has been another issue. In June it emerged that Web3 businesses have been shelling out anywhere between 20 million and 200 million Hong Kong dollars ($2.55 million and $25.5 million) in order to see out the licensing application process.Alongside these licensing difficulties, Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) issued a warning last month aimed at unregistered crypto businesses engaging in “improper practices” within the Chinese autonomous territory.OKX’s remarkable growthWith OKX having reported growth within the Hong Kong market earlier this year, pointing to the onboarding of over 10,000 new users in just one month, it’s likely that licensing is both worthwhile and necessary for the firm despite the difficulties in obtaining it. In March the exchange established OKX Hong Kong, a local entity, with the primary objective of securing a VASP license and operating as a virtual asset trading platform within the city.Hong Kong’s decision to open its doors to retail investors as of June 1 generated significant interest, with more than 80 foreign and Mainland China-based crypto companies expressing their intent to establish a presence in Hong Kong and obtain local licenses. Among these firms are Gate.io, Huobi, CoinEx, and Interactive Brokers.Expanding global reachNotably, OKX has been actively acquiring licenses in various jurisdictions worldwide as part of its strategic expansion plan. The exchange secured a Minimal Viable Product (MVP) license from the Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) in June. This licensing milestone followed the establishment of a new office at the Dubai World Trade Center by OKX.Before venturing into the Middle East, OKX took steps to obtain a French digital asset service provider (DASP) license in May, aiming to position France as its regional hub in Europe. To facilitate this, OKX established a local subsidiary, OKX France. The application and registration process with the French regulator is expected to enable OKX to operate in full compliance with European regulations.Hong Kong embarked on its journey to become a crypto-friendly jurisdiction over the course of the past 12 months, but particularly so when it unveiled its licensing framework for cryptocurrency exchanges catering to retail customers earlier this year. However, only a handful of platforms, such as HashKey and OSL, managed to secure licenses for offering retail crypto trading services. Others, including Huobi and Gate.io, are still awaiting that regulatory nod.
