Metalpha Technology Holding, a Hong Kong-headquartered crypto-based wealth management company, has recently announced a significant milestone for its Next Generation Fund I. The fund, put together in collaboration with NextGen Digital Venture Limited, has secured a strategic investment of $5 million from Bitmain, a prominent player in the crypto space.

Fund expansion

The timing of this investment is noteworthy as Metalpha’s licensed fund products are experiencing rapid growth. These products cater to the increasing demand for exposure to cryptocurrencies among institutional investors, family offices, and high net worth individuals. The Next Generation Fund I serves as a regulated and compliant avenue for investing in the Grayscale Trust’s digital asset investment products through structured derivatives.

Having set a target capital raise of $100 million, the fund had already secured $20 million by March of this year, demonstrating a strong market interest. This additional $5 million investment from Bitmain further solidifies Metalpha’s position and potential for expansion.

Adrian Wang, the President of Metalpha, commented on the development: “We aim to capitalize on the fast growing digital assets industry here in Hong Kong and provide our clients with competitive, complaint products worldwide.”

Founded in 2015, Metalpha aims to provide customers with high-quality investment products and trading capabilities. The company, which went public in October 2017, claims to deliver the best structured derivative products to participants in the cryptocurrency market.

Strategic investment

The strategic investment from Bitmain not only brings substantial financial backing to Metalpha’s Next Generation Fund I but also signifies the confidence that industry leaders have in the company’s potential. Bitmain’s reputation as a prominent manufacturer of cryptocurrency mining hardware lends credibility to the investment and serves as a testament to Metalpha’s position in the market.

The digital assets sector has had to deal with a 2022 bear market and macroeconomic headwinds. Notwithstanding that, the investment is timely and while we are not in bull market conditions, the space remains progressive, working towards ongoing adoption. Institutional investors, in particular, are increasingly seeking exposure to digital assets as part of their diversified portfolios. Metalpha’s licensed fund products provide a regulated and compliant solution to meet this demand, offering investors a secure and structured way to access the cryptocurrency market.

Asian hub

Hong Kong, as a global financial hub and aspiring crypto hub, has witnessed substantial interest in digital assets in recent months. The region’s supportive regulatory environment, combined with its proximity to major Asian markets, makes it an attractive destination for companies like Metalpha to operate and grow. The autonomous Chinese territory’s credentials have been bolstered in that respect recently with a move to permit retail crypto trading while enabling aspiring digital asset unicorns.

The $5 million investment from Bitmain will enable Metalpha to further enhance its fund offerings, expand its reach, and strengthen its position as a leader in crypto-based wealth management. With the financial support and industry expertise of Bitmain, Metalpha can leverage this partnership to drive innovation and develop new investment opportunities for its clients.

As the digital assets industry continues to evolve and mature, companies like Metalpha play a crucial role in bridging the gap between traditional finance and the crypto space. By providing regulated investment products and maintaining compliance with regulatory frameworks, Metalpha contributes to the overall growth and legitimacy of the cryptocurrency market.

Hong Kong’s HashKey Adds AVAX Trading

Hong Kong’s HashKey Adds AVAX TradingHashKey Hong Kong, the Chinese autonomous territory’s first licensed retail crypto exchange, has unveiled an addition to its platform with the launch of Avalanche (AVAX) trading.According to an announcement published to its website on Wednesday, HashKey has listed Avalanche on Thursday with the caveat that access to AVAX trading will be reserved for professional investors, as defined by Hong Kong’s Securities & Futures Commission (SFC).Photo by Wance Paleri on UnsplashAccessible to professional investorsTo meet the criteria as a professional investor in Hong Kong, individuals must possess an investment portfolio valued at a minimum of 8 million Hong Kong dollars, roughly equivalent to $1 million. This decision sets AVAX apart from other widely traded cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin and Ether, which remain accessible to retail investors in Hong Kong. While Tether (USDT) enjoys retail status, the majority of altcoins on HashKey will remain the preserve of professional investors. This move is a direct result of the SFC’s proactive stance on regulating the rapidly expanding crypto market in Hong Kong. Since the introduction of regulated retail crypto trading in the Chinese autonomous territory in August, the SFC has imposed rigorous requirements on exchanges. HashKey mandates users to deposit a minimum of 10,000 Hong Kong dollars or $1,500 into their exchange accounts as part of the Know Your Customer (KYC) verification process.Low trading volumeAmid these regulatory challenges, HashKey Hong Kong currently reports a 24-hour trading volume of approximately $5.3 million, significantly lower than its global peers. This lower trading volume suggests that stringent regulations may be affecting the exchange’s ability to attract retail investors effectively. The path to regulatory compliance in Hong Kong has been anything but smooth for crypto exchanges. Reports indicate that these platforms have collectively invested over $25 million in establishing the requisite infrastructure for obtaining a Hong Kong Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license. It was reported earlier this year that crypto firms are forking out between $2.55 million and $25.5 million in order to secure a VASP trading license.Despite the challenges, HashKey is looking at various avenues in bringing its offering forward. Earlier this month the firm signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with insurer OneDegree. That collaboration could be significant as it should lead to the assets of HashKey users being protected and insured on the platform. That would solve a major issue for participants in the crypto space amid the backdrop of ongoing platform failures and hacks.JPEX collapseEven as regulatory efforts intensify, the crypto industry in Hong Kong has not been impervious to bad actors. The recent collapse of the JPEX crypto exchange earlier this month serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing risks associated with the industry. Described as the largest financial fraud in Hong Kong’s history, JPEX faced allegations of embezzling over $178 million of investors’ funds. Notably, JPEX was operating without SFC registration at the time of the alleged embezzlement. In response to such incidents, the SFC has taken proactive measures by publishing a warning list of crypto exchanges considered non-compliant within the Chinese autonomous territory.

Qatar’s QFC launches digital assets framework

The Qatar Financial Centre (QFC), a business and financial center located in the Qatari capital, Doha, has announced that the Qatar Financial Centre Authority (QFCA) and the Qatar Financial Centre Regulatory Authority (QFCRA) have launched the QFC digital assets framework. In a press release published to the QFC website on Sept. 1, the project set out details of its QFC Digital Assets Framework 2024.Photo by 拜耳 闫 on UnsplashIndependent economic zoneThe QFCA and the QFCRA both act in a regulatory capacity relative to the financial center. The QFC is an economic zone, which operates independently from the rest of the country. With that, it has its own legal, tax, regulatory and business framework. The initiative is similar in this respect to projects located within its Middle Eastern neighbors, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), such as RAK DAO in Ras al Khaimah and Abu Dhabi’s international financial center, the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM). The QFC incentivizes international startups to base themselves within the economic zone by allowing full foreign ownership and 100% repatriation of any profits made by the established entity, with a low rate of 10% taxation applied to those profits. In its press release, the QFC claimed that the framework establishes the legal and regulatory foundation for digital assets, including the process of tokenization, legal recognition of property rights in tokens and their underlying assets, custody arrangements, transfer and exchange.  Providing for a transparent ecosystemAdditionally, the framework provides for the legal recognition of smart contracts. The QFC claims that the framework will ensure a “secure and transparent digital asset ecosystem,” in accordance with international standards and best practices.  The financial center established its Digital Assets Lab in October 2023. Since then, it has welcomed in more than 20 startups, with those entities at various stages in terms of developing, testing and commercializing their products and services. The project outlined that the digital assets framework was developed simultaneously, alongside the operation of the QFC Digital Assets Lab, with industry engagement and collaboration arising as a consequence, having played a role in the framework’s development. His Excellency, Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud Al Thani, the Qatari Central Bank governor, commented on the development, stating: “Launching the 2024 Digital Assets Regulations marks a significant milestone in our journey towards realising the Third Financial Sector Strategy.” The central bank governor added that the project was aligned with Qatar’s endeavor to achieve specific digital transformation goals. Sovereign wealth fund rumorsRumors had emerged in December 2023 that Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund was driving a Bitcoin price surge. While those rumors weren’t substantiated subsequently, this latest development has once again led to some market commentators considering the prospect of one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds investing in Bitcoin. Pseudonymous crypto influencer “MartyParty,” who has over 110,000 followers on X, commented on the development, adding that “[The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) has] been very interested in #Bitcoin and other digital assets and are huge investors in technology.” Back in 2021, QIA CEO Mansoor Bin Ebrahim Al Mahmoud stated at the Qatar Economic Forum that crypto needed to mature before the $500 billion wealth fund would establish a view about investing in the space.
