A year of e-CNY firsts

In October, Chinese state-owned media reported that the Shanghai Petroleum and Natural Gas Exchange (SHPGX) had been the venue for the first ever significant settlement of an oil contract using the e-CNY. Running along a commodities theme, on Wednesday a similar transaction was carried out once again with Shanghai being the venue, relative to the purchase of gold.

A transaction valued at 100 million yuan ($14 million) was facilitated by the Bank of China’s Shanghai branch through the Shanghai Financial Exchange International Board. That’s according to reports from local Chinese media outlets.

The Bank of China’s Shanghai branch, a key participant in the ongoing e-CNY pilot testing, orchestrated the transfer of e-CNY CBDC settlement received from overseas for the purchase of the gold. A spokesperson for the Bank of China highlighted the strategic significance of the transaction, stating:

“The account will contribute financial strength to support Shanghai’s in-depth implementation of the free trade pilot zone promotion strategy and promote the quality and upgrading of the international trade center.”

Oil, gold and iron ore

This achievement follows on from the Bank of China’s Hong Kong affiliate Bank of China (Hong Kong) (BOCHK) facilitating the import of iron ore to China through the e-CNY just last week. As part of that pilot trial, Baosteel Group, a customer of the Bank of China, purchased iron ore from Bao-Trans Enterprises.

Further expanding its international partnerships, China signed a $400 million memorandum on CBDC cooperation with the United Arab Emirates on Dec. 1. The move underscores China’s commitment to fostering collaboration in the development and implementation of CBDCs on a global scale.

Partnering with foreign banks

The Bank of China is actively collaborating with foreign institutions, including France’s BNP Paribas, to advance the development of the digital yuan CBDC.

In July, Singaporean bank DBS Bank launched an e-CNY product for mainland China-based customers. Amid relentless moves to further the use of the digital currency, British banking giant Standard Chartered joined the advanced stages of pilot trials of the CBDC in November.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, recognizing the pivotal role of CBDCs in cross-border trade, emphasized their importance during an address to the July 2023 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. Subsequently, foreign banks have joined China’s ongoing CBDC trials, and Singapore announced its decision to allow Chinese tourists to utilize e-CNY for transactions within Singapore.

In a related development, the official e-CNY app received an update on Tuesday. The latest version allows users to create an e-CNY wallet using their phone number, provides options to disable the wallet in case of phone loss and enables the resetting of passwords and private keys. Users can also link their personal bank accounts and debit cards to the e-CNY wallet for seamless in-wallet purchases.

This equity-based investment demonstrates a growing interest in not only the project’s token but also the team behind it.Manta Network aims to leverage zero-knowledge (ZK) technology to address the scalability challenges and privacy concerns prevalent on the Ethereum network. By harnessing zero-knowledge proofs, Manta enables users to verify the authenticity of information without disclosing the underlying data. This approach provides individuals with complete control over their identities while mitigating the risks of surveillance. Consequently, Manta Network is seeking to attract users who have reservations about utilizing DeFi protocols due to the transparent nature of transactions on public blockchain networks. At the recent EthCC event held in Paris, the project unveiled the testnet for its Layer 2 network, known as Manta Pacific. This testnet operates in an environment with low gas fees, fostering cost-effective transactions for users. Manta Pacific is designed to complement the existing Layer 1 solution, Manta Atlantic, which focuses on achieving compliant on-chain privacy.VC supportLuke Pearson, an investor at Polychain Capital, expressed his enthusiasm for Manta Network’s expansion within the Ethereum ecosystem and confirmed Polychain’s continued support through this Series A funding round. Animoca Indicates Fund Interest From Console Makers

Animoca Indicates Fund Interest From Console MakersThe head of Animoca Ventures has said that Web3 gaming is attracting the interest of veterans of the gaming world as well as that of “key Japanese console makers.”Animoca Ventures is a subsidiary company of Hong Kong-headquartered Web3 gaming and NFT firm, Animoca Brands. In a conversation with The Block recently, James Ho explained that although Web3 gaming has seen a short to medium-term downtrend when using the pricing of gaming-related tokens as the metric, the Animoca Ventures lead is seeing interest coming from “some of the best, most profound veterans in gaming.”Photo by Albie Patacsil on UnsplashProof of interestHo elaborated that there are a host of examples that back up his claim. He referred to FunPlus’s investment in global cross-platform play-and-earn games developer and publisher, Xterio. FunPlus itself is a Switzerland-headquartered independent games developer and publisher with offices and operations in China, Singapore, Canada, Spain, and the United States. Xterio raised $40 million in a funding round led by FunPlus in August of last year, with funding going towards building out its platform alongside further game development.Ho also cited Square Enix, a Japanese gaming conglomerate that has shown an interest in blockchain-based gaming in recent years. In April, it announced that it was tripling down on blockchain by partnering with Web3 platform Elixir. The objective of the collaboration is to generate visibility and adoption of Web3 gaming among traditional gamers. It’s also understood that Chinese tech giant Tencent has had a games studio under its group of companies which is believed to be building a blockchain-based first-person shooter game. Meanwhile, French video game publishing behemoth Ubisoft is an investor in Animoca Brands while also participating in a crypto-focused fund run by multi-stage technology investment platform, White Star Capital.Console-maker intentMost notable from Ho’s interview, though, is his claim that “key Japanese console makers” have an interest right now in pursuing Web3 gaming. That’s incredibly significant because if Web3 can conquer the consoles, it will truly be a mass-market affair at that point.Ho elaborated: “Console makers never cared about free-to-play until it grew into multi-million users, what we’re seeing here now is some of the console makers with their deep pockets want to get involved in potentially a fund to stay on top of innovation… And that to me is a signal that they want to build something in this space in the near future, or not too distant future.”The Animoca Ventures lead talked about “key Japanese console makers,” specifically in the context of interest expressed by them in investing in a second early-stage venture fund that Animoca is considering. The expression of interest has become evident to the company as it’s a response it received having touted the prospect of establishing the fund. It’s interesting to hear that Animoca is actively pitching the notion of raising another fund, as it had been speculated that the firm has scaled down some of its existing funds. It’s understood that the firm was working on the new fund in November of last year, initially proposing a target of $2 billion. Once January came around, Animoca took the decision to scale that target back by half to $1 billion. The company denies that reporting on the subject, suggesting instead that the original target of the fund was $1 billion from the outset.

That post read:“In the interest of transparency Around 4 hours ago, we experienced unauthorized access of some of our API keys. We paused all trading while we conduct an investigation. Potential losses are not a significant portion of our equity and we aim to resume trading as soon as possible.”On-chain sleuthingInvestigations by crypto community members have followed, led by blockchain researcher ZachXBT. ZachXBT is a well-known anonymous persona in the crypto space, having earned a reputation for uncovering hacks, scams and unethical practices within the crypto sector. In this instance, ZachXBT uncovered a trail of transactions originating from a Kronos Research account. The meticulous execution of the cyber attack was evident in six transactions involving 2,780 ETH, 2,540 ETH (repeated twice), 2,636 ETH, 4.93 ETH and 2,507.52 ETH, all directed to addresses controlled by the hacker.Kronos Research has followed up with a tweet thread on X, acknowledging the gravity of the situation and confirming losses of approximately $25.65 million in crypto assets. Despite the alarming figures, the company sought to reassure stakeholders by emphasizing that the losses represent a relatively small fraction of its total equity. In a commendable display of accountability, Kronos Research pledged to absorb all losses internally, shielding its partners from the financial ramifications of the breach. The Taiwanese firm posted:“Our team has been working round the clock to minimize the impact and resume trading operations, following a hacking incident that involved unauthorized access to our API Keys.”Implications for Woo XThe operational repercussions were swift and impactful, with Kronos Research opting for a temporary suspension of all trading operations.
