JV company formation

At the end of September, the two companies outlined the starting point of an intended collaboration. Only three months later, SBI has come back with an update, a press release published on Dec. 27, to detail the progress that has been made thus far.

According to that document, the companies established joint venture corporate entity SBI XDC Network APAC Co. Ltd. on Dec. 18. Among the directors of the new company is the President of BITPoint Japan, a wholly owned subsidiary crypto exchange business of SBI.

Majority stakeholder

SBI will be the majority stakeholder in the venture, holding 60% of the company’s shares while Dubai-based TradeFinex will be the minor partner, with a 40% shareholding. The press release outlines that the stakeholders will “work to expand the use case using the blockchain technology of the XDC Network in global economic activities centered on trade finance and cross-border payments, not just the handling of tokens.”

With that, this enterprise-focused blockchain initiative aims to elevate the efficiency of trade finance. Going forward, it endeavors to broaden the applications of XDC Network's blockchain technology in global economic activities, with the emphasis remaining on trade finance and cross-border payments.

The XDC Network, inaugurated in 2017, is a community-driven platform tailored explicitly for trade finance and payments. It introduces a smart contract system that streamlines global trade operations by tokenizing real-world assets (RWAs) such as bonds, trade assets and trade documents. Operating on a high-speed, secure and cost-effective blockchain, XDC Network aspires to transform the landscape of trade finance.

SBI Group has been actively involved in various services related to the XDC Network, including being the first exchange in Japan to handle XDC tokens. This was made possible through a partnership with SBI VC Trade, a company within the SBI Group specializing in crypto asset exchange services.

Corda platform proof of concept

Logo design has been completed for the new entity, while a website has also been launched. Not wasting any time, the new company has already initiated a proof-of-concept (PoC) experiment. The experiment involves connecting the XDC Network with the Corda platform from SBI R3 Japan and the Corda Bridge from IMPEL GLOBAL.

The PoC experiment revolves around conducting fiat payments generated by business-to-business transactions in XDC via Corda and the Corda Bridge. Leveraging a hybrid blockchain with both private and public characteristics, the objective is to attempt to offer a seamless one-stop service that settles both private and public aspects simultaneously.

The company claims that this approach achieves an efficient and smooth payment method for cross-border transactions, including international trade, outshining conventional fiat currency transactions.

Ripple Expands in Asia-Pacific with Full License to Operate in Singapore

Ripple Expands in Asia-Pacific with Full License to Operate in SingaporeEnterprise blockchain firm Ripple announced on Wednesday (UTC) that it has secured a full license to operate in Singapore, where it has established its Asia-Pacific headquarters since 2017.Photo by Sergio Sala on UnsplashFrom outline to full approval in 4 monthsThis development marks another step in Ripple’s strategic expansion within the Asia-Pacific region, known for its rapidly growing cryptocurrency market. Ripple’s journey to obtaining this full license began less than four months ago when the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) granted it an initial in-principle approval in June. With the newly acquired full license, Ripple is now authorized to offer regulated cryptocurrency payment services in Singapore, a key financial hub in the region.Brad Garlinghouse, the CEO of Ripple, expressed his enthusiasm for the company’s continued growth in Singapore, stating:“We have hired exceptional talent and local leadership, doubling headcount over the past year and plan to continue growing our presence in a progressive jurisdiction like Singapore.”Global expansion strategyThe company also highlighted the fact that over 90% of Ripple’s business occurs outside the United States, making the Asia-Pacific region, and Singapore in particular, a vital part of its global expansion strategy.Monica Long, President of Ripple, explained in a recent interview with CNBC that the Singapore office has seen substantial growth in the past year due to the booming business opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region. This expansion aligns with Singapore’s leadership in crypto regulation in the region. The introduction of the Payment Services Act, which has been in effect since January 2020, has played a large part in that, regulating payment services and crypto services to the public.Singapore’s regulatory framework also includes requirements for crypto service providers to safeguard customer assets in statutory trusts by the end of 2023 and restrictions on facilitating lending or staking of retail customers’ assets. These measures ensure consumer protection and responsible growth in the crypto industry.Praising SingaporeGarlinghouse commended Singapore’s regulatory approach, stating, “Under MAS’ leadership, Singapore has developed into one of the leading fintech and digital asset hubs, striking the balance between innovation, consumer protection and responsible growth.” Ripple’s experience in Singapore differs entirely from the ongoing legal battle it has found itself in in the United States with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).Both Ripple and Coinbase have found themselves embroiled in lawsuits with the regulator in the US. In Ripple’s case, the firm and its founders have been accused of unlawfully selling their native cryptocurrency XRP without registering it with the SEC. However, a landmark ruling in July determined that XRP, as a token, may not necessarily be classified as a security.Long spoke to the contrasting experiences the firm has encountered between the United States and Singapore. Long stated:”Being in Singapore a couple weeks ago felt like night and day compared to the US in terms of open dialogue with regulators, and thus being able to build innovative *and* compliant products.”Ripple, along with Coinbase and several other crypto firms, has criticized the lack of regulatory clarity in the US and has even considered relocating operations due to the SEC’s stringent regulatory stance. Notably, Coinbase also recently announced its successful acquisition of a major payment institution license in Singapore, following its in-principle approval obtained about a year ago.

Zodia Custody Expands to Hong Kong to Meet Asian Institutional Demand

Zodia Custody Expands to Hong Kong to Meet Asian Institutional DemandZodia Custody, the crypto arm of British banking conglomerate Standard Chartered, is extending its digital asset custody services to financial institutions in Hong Kong, making further in-roads in terms of the company’s Asia-Pacific expansion.News of the expanded offering came via a CNBC report published on Sunday. Launched in 2020, Zodia Custody was founded to address the growing institutional demand for secure crypto asset storage, making Hong Kong a strategic addition to its service areas alongside its recent foray into the Australian market.Photo by Emily Xie on UnsplashAsia-Pacific expansionCurrently, only two companies, OSL Digital and HashKey, have obtained licenses from the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) to operate within Hong Kong’s regulated crypto space. In its initial phase of operations in Hong Kong, Zodia Custody intends to offer a limited range of crypto assets to its institutional clients, aligning with its commitment to prudent expansion.Zodia Custody’s expansion into Hong Kong follows a series of moves into other key Asia-Pacific (APAC) markets, including Japan, Singapore, and Australia. Moreover, the company remains open to potential partnerships and clientele from regions beyond its current operational footprint.Earlier this month, Zodia Custody made headlines in Australia with the introduction of SAF3, a digital asset custody platform tailored specifically for institutional clients. SAF3 boasts bank-grade cold wallet storage accessible in real-time, complemented by advanced risk management and fraud detection capabilities. Julian Sawyer, the CEO of Zodia Custody, emphasized the importance of responsible institutional adoption, a significant step as Australia’s digital asset industry continues to mature.Institutional demand in Hong KongIn response to the surging institutional interest in crypto assets, Zodia Custody is capitalizing on this market trend, recognizing that Hong Kong’s demand for crypto services is predominantly institutionally driven. Sawyer underlined the unique character of the Hong Kong crypto market compared to other regions, where retail consumers often dominate trading activities. The confluence of institutional demand and Zodia’s specialized services positions Hong Kong as an ideal market for the company’s expansion.Notably, Hong Kong has demonstrated a more crypto-friendly stance compared to its neighboring China, which has taken a stricter approach with crypto bans. Earlier this year, Hong Kong’s SFC introduced a regulatory framework that allows companies to register and provide regulated crypto services. In light of these developments, Zodia Custody is in talks with both the SFC and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority to secure regulatory approval within the financial district.Julian Sawyer articulated this opportunity, stating:“The Hong Kong government and the regulators see digital assets as the future and also want Hong Kong to be a hub.” These discussions are poised to pave the way for Zodia Custody to operate within a well-regulated environment.Standard Chartered has been making in-roads into the Asian market, largely through its Singaporean subsidiary SC Ventures. Zodia Custody launched in Dubai in June and in Singapore last month. However, it is not just progressing solely in the Asia-Pacific region. Recently, Zodia Markets, another Standard Chartered subsidiary, achieved registration as a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) with the Central Bank of Ireland. In September, Zodia Markets also made significant strides in the Middle East and Africa by securing In-Principle Approval from the Abu Dhabi Global Market.
