Markets·May 11, 2024, 3:01 AM

Hong Kong's spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) encountered their second day of net outflows since their launch on April 30.

According to data published by crypto trading data platform SoSo Value, in excess of 90 BTC exited the Hong Kong ETFs on May 9. The data indicated that China Asset Management's spot Bitcoin ETF observed an outflow of 80.16 BTC, while the Bosera HashKey Bitcoin ETF recorded a lesser outflow of 10 BTC. Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s third spot Bitcoin ETF offered by Harvest Global registered zero flows.

These daily net outflows follow a trend of net inflows that had developed in the preceding days, with the three ETFs collectively witnessing net inflows of 101.6 BTC on Wednesday and 99.99 BTC on Tuesday.

As of Thursday, the three ETFs, managed by ChinaAMC, Harvest Global and Bosera with HashKey, held approximately 4,260 Bitcoin, with total net assets reaching $261.45 million, marking an increase from $247.7 million on the first day of trading.

The total trading volume for the three ETFs amounted to $2.06 million on Thursday, a decline from $2.67 million the day prior and a significant drop from the $9.74 million recorded on April 30, according to SosoValue data.

This recent outflow represents the second day of net outflows from these products since their launch on April 30.   The initial day of outflows occurred on May 6, with 75.36 BTC flowing out of the products. This marked the first setback for Hong Kong's Bitcoin ETFs following their launch on April 30.  The outflows on that occasion primarily stemmed from the China Asset Management Bitcoin ETF, while other Hong Kong-based products saw no flows.

Potential Stock Connect addition

Many commentators had expected these Hong Kong-based products to see inflows from mainland China. While that hasn’t materialized yet, Harvest Global CEO Han Tongli said that he doesn’t rule out the addition of its Bitcoin and Ether ETF products to Stock Connect.

Shanghai Hong Kong Stock Connect is a cross border investment channel that would open access to these products to investors that ordinarily invest in and trade products and equities listed within the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSEC). Tongli made the suggestion to the South China Morning Post (SCMP)  while attending the Bitcoin Asia conference. He suggested that such an addition is a possibility if all goes smoothly over the course of the next two years.

U.S. product outflows

In the U.S., spot Bitcoin ETFs also saw net outflows on Thursday, amounting to $11.29 million. Farside data indicates that the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) witnessed a substantial $43.4 million redemption, marking its largest single-day outflow since May 2, totaling $17.5 billion in outflows overall.

BlackRock’s IBIT has now accumulated $15.4 billion in total inflows. Additionally, other top-performing ETFs — Bitwise (BITB), Fidelity (FBTC) and ARK (ARKB) — also experienced inflows. In total, U.S. ETFs have witnessed $11.7 billion in cumulative net inflows.

Lackluster Nasdaq Debut for Bitdeer

Bitcoin miner Bitdeer Technologies Group’s stock had a rough debut on the Nasdaq exchange, losing almost 30% of its value shortly after market open on Friday. The Singapore-based firm, which is one of the largest bitcoin miners in the world, had delayed its listing several times and saw a lukewarm reception from investors. Bitdeer’s merger with a special-purpose acquisition vehicle called Blue Safari Group Acquisition Corp was approved on Tuesday, paving the way for the listing. Mining across six sitesBitdeer has six mining sites across Washington state, Texas, Tennessee, and Norway, with a total energy capacity of 775 megawatts as of the end of 2022. It has a hashrate or computing power of 16.2 exahash per second (EH/s), second only to bankrupt miner Core Scientific and higher than Riot Platforms and Marathon Digital Holdings. Around one-quarter of the hashrate is used for self-mining, while the rest is given out for cloud mining, which means that customers rent the machines and reap the rewards.Despite the company’s impressive size and scale, Bitdeer’s financial performance deteriorated in 2022, which was partly due to worsening market conditions. The company reported revenue of $330.3 million and a loss of $62.4 million for the year, compared with $394.7 million in revenue and a profit of $82.6 million in the previous year. The company’s listing comes at a better time than last year, as market conditions have improved, and bitcoin has passed the $30,000 mark. Mining equities have also outperformed the digital asset in percentage growth. Differentiation of mining operatorsHowever, Bitdeer’s listing was not received as positively as expected, and the stock was halted several times for volatility shortly after the market opened. Other crypto mining stocks saw single-digit upticks in their share value at the same time. The market is beginning to shift from operators with the biggest scale to operators with the best unit economics, said investment bank Stifel Nicolaus’s analyst Bill Papanastasiou. This shift may explain why investors were not too keen on Bitdeer’s debut, as the company’s financials are not as strong as those of its competitors. Despite Bitdeer being larger than Marathon and Riot, based on its current share price and valuation, it is priced at a third of the value of its two industry peers.Bitdeer was born out of the world’s largest rig manufacturer, Bitmain, following a spat between the two co-founders. The firm is not the only cloud mining firm affiliated with Bitmain that is going public via SPAC, as BitFuFu is also in the process of going public, but has delayed its listing. Bitdeer’s stock debut may have been lackluster, but the company remains one of the largest bitcoin miners in the world.Shares in the newly quoted public company opened at $9.70, sliding to $6.30, before ending the first day’s trading at $7.03.

Superscrypt Backs Airstack’s Web3 Developer Platform

Superscrypt Backs Airstack’s Web3 Developer PlatformSingapore-based Superscrypt, an early stage blockchain investment company founded by state-owned global investment conglomerate Temasek, has led an investment round into Web3 developer platform, Airstack.Photo by Giorgio Trovato on UnsplashIndian influenceAirstack closed out the second tranche of its pre-seed funding round, having raised the largest portion of the $7 million raise via Superscrypt. Although based in Miami Beach, Florida, Airstack has a strong Indian influence. Three of its five founders, Deepesh Kumar, Vysakh Nair and Sarvesh Jain originate from the world’s most populous country. The firm’s main offering is to enable developers to be able to easily query on and off-chain data and integrate that same data into the Web3 apps that they are building. Airstack enables this functionality by featuring GraphQL, a query language for APIs and a runtime for fulfilling those queries with the user’s existing data, as a core component of its platform.Achieving greater functionality still, the start-up enhances that use of GraphQL by incorporating the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The company’s Miami Beach-based CEO and Co-Founder, Jason Goldberg, elaborated on the technology it is using in an interview with CoinDesk: “We did extensive interviews with developers over the past year, gaining insights into their previous tool usage and the challenges they faced. Airstack was built to directly address those pain points.”Recent platform launchThe product offering was launched last month and has already lured in over two hundred developers to use the platform. Those developers are harnessing the functionality of Airstack’s platform to assist them in their efforts to bring a broad range of dApps to market.Developer projects are grounded in areas such as marketing engines, decentralized finance (DeFi) portfolio optimizers, customer resource management tools, advertising platforms, and decentralized social media apps, together with messaging applications. With just a straightforward query and response approach, developers can use Airstack platform functionality to query, combine, and integrate on-chain or off-chain, cross-chain, and cross-application data. The offering applies to queries relative to the Ethereum and Polygon blockchain networks. The project intends to support additional blockchain networks going forward, while also intending to increase the level of query complexity made available to platform users.Joining Superscrypt on the Airstack cap table are Hashed Emergent, NGC, Primal Capital, UOB Ventures, Signum Capital, and others. Goldberg articulated the firm’s strategy going forward: “Our immediate focus is to onboard thousands of developers onto Airstack in the coming months. We aim to identify the areas where we add the most value and where genuine business use cases emerge before finalizing our pricing model.”Social app upgradeAt the same time as this funding announcement, Airstack also revealed a separate development related to its Jam social app. Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, Goldberg provided details on an update to the app which utilizes Airstack functionality in order to create social groups based on NFT ownership and collector status. That functionality can be extended further, so that data can be gathered across projects, creating bespoke user profiles relative to the user’s blockchain activity and presence. At the same time as this funding announcement, Airstack also revealed a separate development related to its Jam social app. Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, Goldberg provided details on an update to the app which utilizes Airstack functionality in order to create social groups based on NFT ownership and collector status.
