Accelerating the Bitcoin strategy

In an announcement on May 1, the company outlined that it had established Metaplanet Treasury Corporation in Miami, Florida. The firm cited the purpose of the subsidiary as a means through which it can accelerate its overriding strategy of accumulating more Bitcoin.

Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich commented on X on the rationale behind locating the U.S. subsidiary in Florida, stating:

”The reason for choosing Florida is clear: the state is rapidly emerging as a global hub for Bitcoin innovation, corporate adoption and financial liberalization.”

Gerovich added that the newly formed company will enhance Metaplanet’s “around-the-clock operational capabilities across time zones.” The Metaplanet CEO sees the development as part of the firm’s evolution as a global Bitcoin treasury company.

$250 million capital raise

The company stated that it had already established a corporate entity in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), with the U.S. addition enhancing the company’s ability “to respond to market dynamics with speed and precision.”

Metaplanet intends to raise $250 million in funding through the Miami-based entity, having launched it with initial capital of $10 million. It’s envisaged that the U.S. subsidiary can act as a vehicle to attract institutional investment.

Back in March it was reported that Metaplanet was investigating the idea of listing its stock in the U.S. At the time, Gerovich stated that the firm was “considering the best way to make Metaplanet shares more accessible to investors around the world.” As part of that process, Gerovich met with officials from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq.

In further U.S.-related developments, the company appointed Eric Trump, second son of U.S. President Donald Trump, to its strategic board of advisors in March. Last week, Metaplanet appointed David Bailey, CEO of Bitcoin Magazine, to its strategic board of advisors.

Bond issuance

In a separate development, Metaplanet has issued 3.6 billion Japanese yen ($24.7 million) in 0% ordinary bonds to purchase additional Bitcoin. The company used its EVO FUND as the mechanism through which it issued the bonds.

It has set out a goal of accumulating 10,000 BTC by the end of the year. Currently, the company holds 5,000 BTC. One community member believes that Metaplanet could hit this target as early as July on the basis of ongoing share dilution.

Appearing on The Bitcoin Treasuries Podcast earlier this year, Metaplanet’s Director of Bitcoin Strategy, Dylan LeClair, described how prior to adopting its Bitcoin treasury strategy in 2024, the firm was a “zombie” on the Tokyo stock exchange with the pandemic having had a negative impact on the company’s fortunes.

He outlined that the company consolidated and dealt with some debt issues, but at that point it lacked a clear strategy. It then set out to replicate the success of U.S. Bitcoin treasury pioneer, Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy).

On May 1 Gerovich posted on X that the company had achieved unrealized gains on Bitcoin exceeding six billion yen ($41.68 million).

Report: Vietnamese Crypto Investors Rely Heavily on Referrals

Report: Vietnamese Crypto Investors Rely Heavily on ReferralsWhile Vietnam has been leading the way in terms of cryptocurrency adoption among ordinary people, the decision-making process of Vietnamese crypto holders also sets them apart, according to a new report. The report, a collaboration between Vietnamese venture capital firms Kyros Ventures and Coin68, in association with Hong Kong-based Web3 firm Animoca Brands, reveals a striking trend. 76% of Vietnamese crypto holders base their investment choices on recommendations from friends and acquaintances.Photo by Silver Ringvee on UnsplashThe importance of referralsReleased on Wednesday, the report relied upon a survey involving 3,300 participants. A staggering 75.5% of respondents admitted that their crypto investment decisions were significantly “influenced by recommendations or referrals.” This figure stands at 2.5 times the equivalent percentage reported in the United States.Aside from word of mouth, Vietnamese crypto investors rely heavily on self-study, community groups, and media news as primary sources of information relative to crypto. Nearly 50% of survey participants indicated their reliance on these methods for staying informed about the crypto market.Market sentimentThe “Vietnam Cryptocurrency Market Report” for the first half of 2023 also sheds light on the sentiments of the crypto community. It indicates that 70% of survey participants believed that the bear market has already concluded or is approaching its end.Notwithstanding that, another data point could be interpreted such that market participants are still exercising an abundance of caution. Around 60% of respondents confirmed that they hold stablecoins as a significant constituent of their portfolios. Stablecoins are widely used by traders when exercising risk-off positioning.Interestingly, another finding of the report is the fact that an overwhelming 75% of respondents expressed a desire for increased regulatory intervention within the crypto sector. It’s unlikely that this is coincidental, given the number of high-profile crypto platform failures that took place in 2022.Vietnam leading adoptionChainalysis data confirms Vietnam’s dominant position globally in terms of crypto adoption and its impressive second-place ranking in decentralized finance (DeFi) adoption. Remarkably, more than 19% of adults in Vietnam own digital assets while Vietnam ranks among the top five countries when it comes to trading volume on global crypto platform Binance. However, this level of adoption stands in contrast with the limited educational infrastructure supporting it. Only nine educational institutions in the country offer blockchain courses. The survey also probed into user behavior within various crypto domains. The findings show a significant engagement in DeFi activities, with nearly 90% of respondents participating. By the end of 2022, there were in excess of 200 active blockchain projects in operation within Vietnam.GameFi, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), centralized finance (CeFi), and SocialFi are also popular among the Vietnamese crypto community, with engagement rates of between 55% and 91%. The research also found that users maintain a balanced preference between centralized and decentralized exchanges. The report concludes by highlighting the rapidly evolving local tech landscape and its synchronization with global trends. Largely, the report points to a positive sentiment in Vietnam relative to the future of cryptocurrency and Web3 innovation in the country.

amana makes 300 additional cryptocurrencies available to app users

amana, a Dubai-based neo-broker, has announced that it is adding another 300 cryptocurrencies to its app. 450 crypto assetsA neo-broker is an online-based digital investment service provider that leverages technology and online tools to make investing and trading more accessible to the broader investing and trading public. The firm announced the product expansion via a press release published on its behalf by GlobeNewswire on March 17. Prior to the announcement, amana had offered its service users access to 150 cryptocurrencies. Expanding the range to a total of 450 cryptocurrencies makes it the leading broker in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in terms of the breadth of digital assets it has made accessible to users.Photo by Christoph Schulz on UnsplashAll-in-one service offeringThe company described the offering as “unmatched,” allowing amana to firmly position itself as the go-to platform where the seamless trading of both traditional and digital assets is concerned. amana believes that its offering fills a gap in the market. Most platforms, it claims, either cater to the digital assets market or the traditional finance market. The platform sees itself as an all-in-one solution, making it unnecessary for investors and traders to create multiple accounts. Speaking to that gap in the market that the company wants to exploit, amana CEO Muhammad Rasoul stated: “We’re making it easier than ever for our customers to trade digital assets alongside stocks, forex, and commodities—all in one place, with zero hassle.” The firm added that the expansion isn’t just about offering a greater selection of digital assets. The announcement said that “it’s about seamless access, competitive pricing, and a frictionless trading experience.” The company described the amana app as “intuitive,” with the ability to empower both seasoned traders and new investors through the ease of trading within a few taps. Alongside the 450 digital assets, the platform provides users with access to U.S. stocks, FX, commodities, gold and global exchange-traded funds (ETFs). amana also facilitates users to trade using leverage and to avail of automated investment plans. Futures products and contracts for difference (CFDs) complete the product offering lineup. Having first launched in September 2022, the platform claimed recently that it has over 320,000 users accessing the service. Besides Dubai, amana has offices in London, Limassol and Beirut. The company is not the first online broker to bridge the gap between traditional finance and digital assets. American commission-free trading platform Robinhood has made in-roads into crypto. The company has plans to roll out its crypto offerings to the Singapore market later this year.  UK-based neobank Revolut has expanded into the world of investing, including crypto as part of that offering. It emerged last year that the firm has plans to launch a stablecoin. flatexDEGIRO, a European online broker that offers stocks, bonds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), outlined last November that it plans to extend its product offering to include cryptocurrencies.
