amana makes 300 additional cryptocurrencies available to app users

Web3 & Enterprise·March 19, 2025, 3:07 AM

amana, a Dubai-based neo-broker, has announced that it is adding another 300 cryptocurrencies to its app.

450 crypto assets

A neo-broker is an online-based digital investment service provider that leverages technology and online tools to make investing and trading more accessible to the broader investing and trading public.

The firm announced the product expansion via a press release published on its behalf by GlobeNewswire on March 17. Prior to the announcement, amana had offered its service users access to 150 cryptocurrencies. Expanding the range to a total of 450 cryptocurrencies makes it the leading broker in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in terms of the breadth of digital assets it has made accessible to users.

All-in-one service offering

The company described the offering as “unmatched,” allowing amana to firmly position itself as the go-to platform where the seamless trading of both traditional and digital assets is concerned.

amana believes that its offering fills a gap in the market. Most platforms, it claims, either cater to the digital assets market or the traditional finance market. The platform sees itself as an all-in-one solution, making it unnecessary for investors and traders to create multiple accounts.

Speaking to that gap in the market that the company wants to exploit, amana CEO Muhammad Rasoul stated:

“We’re making it easier than ever for our customers to trade digital assets alongside stocks, forex, and commodities—all in one place, with zero hassle.”

The firm added that the expansion isn’t just about offering a greater selection of digital assets. The announcement said that “it’s about seamless access, competitive pricing, and a frictionless trading experience.” The company described the amana app as “intuitive,” with the ability to empower both seasoned traders and new investors through the ease of trading within a few taps.

Alongside the 450 digital assets, the platform provides users with access to U.S. stocks, FX, commodities, gold and global exchange-traded funds (ETFs). amana also facilitates users to trade using leverage and to avail of automated investment plans. Futures products and contracts for difference (CFDs) complete the product offering lineup.

Having first launched in September 2022, the platform claimed recently that it has over 320,000 users accessing the service. Besides Dubai, amana has offices in London, Limassol and Beirut.

The company is not the first online broker to bridge the gap between traditional finance and digital assets. American commission-free trading platform Robinhood has made in-roads into crypto. The company has plans to roll out its crypto offerings to the Singapore market later this year.

UK-based neobank Revolut has expanded into the world of investing, including crypto as part of that offering. It emerged last year that the firm has plans to launch a stablecoin.

flatexDEGIRO, a European online broker that offers stocks, bonds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), outlined last November that it plans to extend its product offering to include cryptocurrencies.

Japan Tops Crypto Losses to North Korean Hackers

Japan Tops Crypto Losses to North Korean HackersHackers affiliated with the North Korean regime have been responsible for the theft of $721 million in digital assets from Japan. That’s the finding of a recent report by UK-based crypto compliance analysis firm Elliptic. Elliptic had produced the report on behalf of Japanese news media group, Nikkei. It leaves Japan at the top of the table when considering the distribution of digital asset losses suffered due to North Korean hackers on a country by country basis.Photo by FLY:D on UnsplashIncreasing lossesElliptic has the wherewithal to track and identify blockchain-based transfers. As part of its analysis, it grouped by region and by country those businesses that it identified as having cryptocurrency holdings that later were transferred to digital wallets held by the Lazarus Group, the most notorious hacker group connected with the North Korean government. It’s the first such analysis to break down crypto-related hacking losses on a country by country basis. The study included a consideration of both hacking and ransomware attacks. The loss associated with Japanese-based entities represents in excess of 30% of the global recorded loss. This latest analysis follows a recent report submitted to the United Nations which found that North Korea stole more digital assets in 2022 than any other year. That report had been submitted to the 15 members of a North Korea sanctions committee, finding that between $630 million and $1 billion worth of digital assets had been stolen.Lax securityElliptic’s analysis and subsequent report point to lax security being employed within Vietnamese and Japanese cryptocurrency marketplaces. Nikkei referred to an unnamed source who asserts that at least three Japanese cryptocurrency exchanges had been compromised by hackers between 2018 and 2021.One of those instances involved Zaif, a company that lost $51.4 million in 2018 and subsequently shut down operations. Overall, Elliptic estimates a global loss of $2.3 billion to hackers between 2017 and 2022 in digital assets, as suffered by crypto firms. It also estimates such losses suffered in the United States at $497 million, while Hong Kong-based losses have been calculated at $281 million.International responseIn April, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) within the Department of the Treasury in the United States stated that it had sanctioned two Chinese nationals and a Hong Kong British national for allegedly having aided the North Korean government in crypto money laundering activities. On Saturday, a joint statement was issued by the Group of Seven finance ministers and central bank governors, following a meeting in Japan, outlining the “growing threat from illicit activities by state actors.” It’s widely believed that the proceeds of these hacks are contributing towards the funding of North Korea’s missile program and other such activities that threaten stability within the region. The Japan External Trade Organization (JETO) has estimated that the estimated $721 million stolen from Japan amounts to 8.8 times the value of North Korea’s exports in 2021.

Cross Trading of LUNA Tokens Uncovered on Three Korean Crypto Exchanges

Cross Trading of LUNA Tokens Uncovered on Three Korean Crypto ExchangesAccording to a report by the Maeil Business Newspaper on Wednesday, it was discovered that cross trading of LUNA tokens took place on three South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges: Bithumb, Coinone, and GoPax.Three crypto exchangesAn indictment by the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office against Terraform Labs co-founders Do Kwon and Daniel Shin, along with interviews conducted within the cryptocurrency industry, revealed that Bithumb, Coinone, and GoPax were involved in cross trading LUNA tokens with a combined value of $598 million. Specifically, Bithumb accounted for $224 million, Coinone for $299 billion, and GoPax for $74 billion. The prosecution has confirmed that cross trading continued until the end of February 2022, a period marked by significant demands for virtual asset legislation from both the market and academia. Despite widespread calls for regulations to curb unfair trading practices, these instances of cross trading went undetected.Classification of LUNAMoreover, it is reported that legal punishment for the $598 million worth of cross trading is challenging unless LUNA tokens are officially recognized as securities by the court. Under the Korean Capital Markets Act, only cross trading involving tokens identified as securities can be subject to penalties as a form of market manipulation.During a plenary session of the National Assembly’s Legislation and Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, Justice Minister Han Dong-hoon made a statement suggesting that LUNA tokens could be considered securities due to their backing by real-world assets. However, he said that this distinction might not apply to other tokens. On April 25, the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office indicted Shin and others as accomplices to Kwon, assuming that LUNA tokens were indeed securities. This case now revolves around whether the prosecution can successfully establish the classification of LUNA tokens as securities during the trial, making it the central issue in the case.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashCrypto investor protection legislationLast Thursday, the National Assembly’s National Policy Committee approved a bill known as the “Virtual Assets User Protection Act,” signaling an accelerated legislative process. However, there are arguments suggesting that the definition of cross trading should be further clarified in either the legislation or enforcement decree.A representative of a law firm specializing in virtual assets stated that the implementation of the User Protection Act would take another year even after its promulgation, making it challenging to retrospectively penalize cross trading practices that had already occurred.

Korean Crypto Exchange Presents Bitcoin Forecasts for Three Scenarios

Korean Crypto Exchange Presents Bitcoin Forecasts for Three ScenariosRecently, concerns over a potential US default have heightened due to the ongoing disagreement between Republicans and Democrats in the US Congress regarding the necessity of increasing the debt ceiling. Democrats, along with the Biden administration, advocate for authorizing additional debt, while Republicans propose spending cuts.Considering the historical patterns observed in the US and the inherently political nature of this matter, it is improbable that the uncertainty surrounding the debt ceiling raise will endure for an extended period. In the past, when faced with a similar situation in 2011, the debt ceiling was ultimately approved despite significant political divisions. Particularly with upcoming elections next year and escalating concerns of an economic downturn, it is likely that a resolution to the debt ceiling issue will be reached soon.In light of these circumstances, the economic research institute at one of South Korea’s major crypto exchanges Bithumb released a report that outlines three distinct scenarios depicting the potential unfolding of the debt ceiling issue in the US. Additionally, it has offered insights into the potential implications for Bitcoin under each scenario.Photo by Shubham’s Web3 on UnsplashBipartisan agreement to increase the debt ceilingIn the scenario where the debt ceiling is promptly raised as a result of a significant bipartisan agreement, the US is anticipated to adopt an expansionary fiscal policy by issuing government bonds to prevent a default. If a debt ceiling deal is reached, it is projected that short-term bond issuance will reach a net amount of $1.4 trillion by the end of the year. There is also a growing consensus that medium- and long-term bond issuance may commence in the third quarter. Additionally, the possibility of interest rate cuts as early as the second half of this year entered the equation. In the long term, this could potentially lead to a depreciation of the dollar as market liquidity increases, thereby weakening the currency. It is worth noting that historically, the value of Bitcoin tended to go up when market liquidity rises.Debt ceiling disagreement and delayed negotiationsAnother scenario entails the failure of the two parties to reach an agreement and a subsequent delay in approving a raise to the debt ceiling. Should the debt ceiling not be raised in a timely manner, the US would potentially encounter an unparalleled default on its debt obligations. This default could trigger a severe credit crunch, resulting from international credit downgrades and a weakened global standing for the US. Such circumstances would further escalate the risk of an economic crisis. As the negotiations on the debt limit continue to be delayed, there will be a prolonged period of uncertainty in both Treasury issuance and secondary markets. This uncertainty poses risks to money market funds (MMFs) that hold a significant portion of short-term Treasuries, potentially resulting in losses. Consequently, there could be a shift towards reverse repo (RRP) transactions as investors seek alternative avenues. In fact, Treasury liquidity has recently exhibited signs of deterioration, with MMFs and RRPs garnering considerable attention in the market.Heightened concerns regarding short-term Treasuries could lead to a higher volume of reverse repo trades compared to repo trades. Repo transactions use Treasuries as collateral, whereas reverse repo transactions involve depositing funds with the Fed or lending money to the Fed in exchange for collateral, which often includes Treasuries, thereby earning interest. In such a scenario, market liquidity could become trapped in the Fed, potentially rekindling risks within the banking system.Given their sensitivity to liquidity conditions, crypto markets are anticipated to experience a temporary decline. However, Bitcoin has exhibited a historical pattern of appreciating in value as an alternative to the US banking system, especially during instances of small and medium-sized bank failures. In the event of prolonged negotiations and an escalating risk of a US default, the demand for safe-haven assets like Bitcoin might surge. As a result, Bitcoin could gain favorability as investors seek refuge in alternative assets amidst uncertain market conditions.Linking debt ceiling increase to spending reductionThe last scenario involves a conditional agreement accompanied by measures aimed at reducing the deficit, as proposed by Republicans. Given the longstanding concerns surrounding excessive US deficits, any agreement to raise the debt ceiling would likely be contingent upon fiscal consolidation and spending cuts. Notably, as of March 31, 2023, the US federal deficit is approximately 8% of GDP, a figure comparable to the 8.3% average observed in 2011 when the possibility of a US default reached its peak. While fiscal consolidation is necessary to ensure fiscal sustainability, unless the US significantly increases tax revenues, an increase in the debt ceiling may be negotiated at the expense of significant cuts to the national budget. In such a case, the US economy would inevitably experience the adverse effects of reduced government spending. The Republican party has put forth a demand of $4.8 trillion in deficit reduction over the next ten years as a condition for raising the debt ceiling. This figure translates to an average of $480 billion per year or approximately 1.8% of the current year’s GDP (as of May). However, it is important to note that in the medium to long term, reductions in government spending without complementary expansionary monetary policies have the potential to accelerate GDP decline. If Congress agrees to cuts in government spending, it could increase the probability of the Fed swiftly reversing its tightening policy. Unless the Fed halts its tightening measures, the likelihood of a US recession may become more pronounced. If the Fed decides to cut interest rates earlier than anticipated in response to the Treasury’s fiscal consolidation efforts, Bitcoin, which is known to be more responsive to long-term monetary policy, might be able to overcome the short-term downturn and experience an upward trend. The authors contend that at present, market attention is primarily directed towards the matter of raising the debt ceiling, taking into account the potential risks of a US default and the possibility of a bond rating downgrade. However, they believe it is unlikely that US politicians will make radical decisions in the run-up to next year’s presidential election. While the issue of raising the debt ceiling will have a short-term impact, the report argues that the main drivers of Bitcoin’s price in the medium to long term will be the Fed’s monetary policy and the occurrence of Bitcoin’s halving event. It is important to note that there is a time lag between the end of the Fed’s tightening measures and the halving of Bitcoin. In the short term, the price trajectory of Bitcoin will likely be influenced by factors such as the potential failure of additional small and medium-sized US banks (which is concerning given recent outflows of US bank deposits) and increased demand for safe-haven assets due to the delay in raising the debt ceiling. These factors will play a greater role in shaping Bitcoin’s short-term performance.
