UAE signs on to OECD crypto-tax reporting pact, sets 2027 launch

Policy & Regulation·September 25, 2025, 6:42 AM

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has taken a step toward global tax transparency in digital assets, opening a public consultation on how it will implement the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) and confirming a formal commitment to the regime.

The UAE Ministry of Finance said it has joined the Multilateral Competent Authority Agreement, enabling the automatic exchange of information under CARF, following its intention announced last November. Implementation is slated to begin in 2027, with the first cross-border exchanges of data expected in 2028.

Global rules for crypto tax reporting

Designed by the OECD, CARF establishes standardized rules for collecting and sharing tax-relevant information on crypto activity. UAE officials say the framework will provide greater certainty for industry participants while aligning the country with international tax transparency standards.

As part of the rollout, the ministry is seeking input from across the market. Advisory firms, intermediaries, traders, custodians, exchanges, and other stakeholders are invited to weigh in on potential impacts and areas needing clarification. The consultation began on Sept. 15 and runs until Nov. 8, with the aim of shaping clear, effective rules that reflect expert insight and market realities.

Solana treasury company

The policy moves come amid brisk momentum in the UAE’s digital asset ecosystem. A recent announcement outlined the planned launch of Solmate, a Solana (SOL)-based digital asset treasury firm that will emerge from the rebranding of Nasdaq-listed, Ireland-based holding company Brera Holdings. The venture is supported through a $300 million private investment in public equity (PIPE) sponsored by UAE-based Pulsar Group.

Brera, known for its multi-club football ownership strategy across three continents, will have that business carried forward under Solmate, which counts the Solana Foundation, RockawayX, and ARK Invest among its investors. Former Kraken chief legal officer (CLO) Marco Santori is also set to become CEO.

Tokenization and real estate

Real-world asset (RWA) tokenization is another area gaining traction in the UAE. Mavryk, a layer-1 network, has raised $10 million in a round led by financial derivatives provider MultiBank Group. The investment builds on a partnership targeting the tokenization of more than $10 billion in UAE real estate via MultiBank’s RWA platform. Fireblocks will provide multiparty computation wallets to secure tokenized assets on Mavryk’s network.

Beyond tokenization, RAK Properties has signed a strategic deal with Hubpay to let foreign buyers acquire homes in the UAE, most notably in Ras Al Khaimah, the country’s sixth most populous city, using cryptocurrencies such as USDT, Bitcoin (BTC), and Ethereum (ETH).

Taken together, the UAE’s alignment with CARF and the burst of private sector initiatives point to a market moving toward clearer rules and broader institutional participation, even as the details of implementation are refined through the current consultation.

WazirX moves closer to trading comeback

Beleaguered Indian crypto exchange WazirX took to social media on April 21 to clarify to the company’s creditors that it is moving closer towards restarting the platform. While the company hasn’t gone into bankruptcy following a $230 million platform hack which occurred in July of last year, it is going through a restructuring process via the Singapore High Court. Posting on the X social media platform, the company addressed concerns surrounding the restarting of operations.  It said that it understood that users were keen to see the platform restart, while reminding stakeholders that from the outset of the process, it had forecasted a first distribution of user funds and a restart of the platform within the April to May 2025 timeframe. Photo by matthew6910 on UnsplashMay court hearingThe firm outlined that its parent company, Zettai PTE Limited, has accomplished all steps to date, in order to bring about the re-emergence of the platform. It has put forward a scheme of arrangement to the court to distribute assets available to it to creditors and bring the trading platform back online.  It identified a May 13 court date as being pivotal to these plans, when the Singapore High Court will hold a sanction hearing and determine whether it confirms the company’s restructuring plan. WazirX added: “While we’ve worked to stay aligned with the previously shared timelines, court proceedings operate independently, and we respect that process. After the Scheme is sanctioned, the First Distribution and restart will follow within 10 business days from the Effective Scheme Date, as outlined earlier.” 85% payoutEarlier this month, 93% of WazirX creditors, accounting for 94.6% of the overall funds owed, voted in favor of the company’s restructuring plan. As part of the plan, users would be compensated with a payout over several distributions of 85% of the overall funds they held on the platform as of July 18, 2024. The company also plans to issue creditors with a recovery token, in an effort to provide them with further value over time. This communication from the company followed the announcement of a court judgement last week by India’s Supreme Court dismissing a lawsuit filed by 54 WazirX users who have lost funds due to the 2024 hack. While the action was dismissed, one of the plaintiffs pointed out on X that the Supreme Court hadn’t indicated that their action lacked merit. He added:”Our criminal writ petition against #WazirX & Nischal Shetty & others was dismissed on jurisdictional grounds.” On that basis, it would appear that the company may still have to deal with such a complaint if brought via a different forum. Over the course of the past 12 months, the WazirX hack stands out alongside an almost $1.5 billion hack at Bybit. In both cases, fingers have been pointed at notorious North Korean hacking group, Lazarus. According to a report published by Chainalysis last December, $2.2 billion had been stolen from crypto platforms in 2024.

Nano Labs lines up $500M to fund BNB treasury

Nano Labs, a Web3-focused semiconductor design company listed on the Nasdaq (NA) and headquartered in Hangzhou, China, has arranged $500 million in financing to fund a BNB treasury. In a press release published on the company’s behalf by GlobeNewswire on June 24, Nano Labs outlined that it has entered into a convertible notes purchase agreement with a number of investors. Convertible promissory notes to the value of $500 million will be issued. Holders of the notes, which mature in 360 days, have the option to convert them to Class A ordinary shares at an initial conversion price of $20 per share. Unconverted notes will not accrue interest, but will be repaid in line with the initial principal amount at maturity. 5%-10% of BNB’s total supplyNano Labs asserted that the agreement “marks an important step in the company’s strategic growth.” It stated that as part of the initiative it plans to conduct an in-depth assessment of the BNB token, the native token of the BNB Chain ecosystem. The token enables transactions on the BNB Chain and access to various services and decentralized applications (DApps) that run on the blockchain network. In the initial phase of the initiative, Nano Labs plans to acquire $1 billion worth of BNB through convertible notes and private placements. In the long term, the firm plans to build up a holding equal to 5% to 10% of BNB’s total circulating supply. On X, @Whdysseus, the pseudonymous founder of Asian Web3 and crypto financial media project BroadChain Finance, commented on Nano Labs' BNB reserve initiative, considering it to be a BNB version of the Bitcoin treasury strategy pioneered by American firm Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy).Photo by Vadim Artyukhin on UnsplashShare price surgeChangpeng Zhao (CZ), the co-founder and former CEO of Binance, who has been heavily involved in the development and overall vision of BNB Chain, outlined on X that Nano Labs’ share price “went through the roof” following the announcement. He added that none of his affiliated entities participated in the funding that Nano Labs has put in place. At the time of writing, Nano Labs stock (NA) was trading at $14.85, up 36.36% over the course of 24 hours. Nano Labs isn’t the only corporate entity to declare an interest in holding BNB. According to a report published by Bloomberg on June 23, former executives at Coral Capital, a Japanese venture capital firm, are understood to be in the process of raising $100 million through a newly formed entity called Build & Build Corporation, in order to launch a crypto treasury that will invest in BNB. In another positive development, on-chain analytics firm Nansen highlighted last month that the BNB Chain had seen active addresses double to two million.  Earlier in May, Geoff Kendrick, head of digital asset research at Standard Chartered, outlined in a research report that the BNB token could reach a unit price of $2,775 by 2028. Kendrick maintained that the deflationary nature of the token, together with its ties to the Binance exchange platform, are factors that support its long-term value.

Pyth Network brings Hong Kong stock pricing on-chain

Pyth Network, an oracle network that provides a bridge between blockchain smart contracts and real-world data, has added pricing data related to stocks listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) to its service offering. Data covering 85 stocksIn a social media post, the project stated that it’s “bringing the Hong Kong market onchain.” In building out the future of finance, DeFi application developers need real-world data from traditional finance sources. Pyth Network confirmed that real-time data in the case of 85 stocks listed on HKEX is now live. In announcing the development, the company disclosed that price feed data is updated every 400 milliseconds and sourced from institutional-grade venues. Once added to the Pyth Network, the data is made available on a multi-network basis across in excess of 100 blockchain networks.Photo by Anne Nygård on UnsplashGateway dataHKEX data is perceived to be significant given that it is a major global exchange, while acting as a key gateway between global and Chinese markets. Pyth Network stated: “Whether you’re building trading strategies, structured products, tokenized portfolios, or simply want access to real-world stock prices from Asia’s financial gateway, these feeds bring Hong Kong’s equity market onchain openly, instantly, and permissionlessly.” In a blog post published to its website on July 28, Pyth Network outlined that this data addition accounts for data related to companies that have a combined equity market value of over $5 trillion. The project stated that this new data is “giving builders, traders, and protocols around the world direct, real-time access to one of the largest financial markets on earth.” Improving access to APAC equitiesThe project made the point that for many years, access to real-time data from the primary markets within the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region has been cost-prohibitive. It claimed that data terminals with this information can cost in excess of $30,000 per year. Pyth Network feels that with its market offering now incorporating HKEX market data, it is opening up access to this data for developers and DeFi protocol projects. This development is the latest in a string of updates that the project has brought about recently. Earlier this month, the project announced a partnership with tokenized real-world asset (RWA) provider Ondo Finance. The deal sees the duo oversee the launch of a USDY/USD price feed, which will be distributed by Pyth across 65 blockchain ecosystems. Similar to its latest unlocking of HKEX equity data, in June it enabled access to real-time onchain pricing related to the UK’s most actively traded equities. Going forward, the company states that “foundational market data will be open, composably integrated, updated in real-time, and available to anyone with an internet connection.” In March 2024, Pyth’s price feeds went live on Injective inEVM, an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible layer-2 rollup developed by Injective Labs. At the time of writing, the unit price of PYTH, Pyth Network’s native utility and governance token, was $0.1204, according to CoinGecko data.
