UBS Pioneers Tokenized Money Market Fund on Ethereum

Web3 & Enterprise·October 05, 2023, 12:18 AM

Underscoring what is very much an ever-evolving financial sector, large-scale investment manager UBS Asset Management has taken a pioneering step by launching a pilot project for a tokenized money market fund on the Ethereum blockchain.

Blurring the lines of TradFi

The initiative, announced by UBS in Singapore on Monday, promises to streamline the traditionally cumbersome processes of fund subscriptions and redemptions. Additionally it highlights the increasing integration of blockchain technology into traditional finance, effectively blurring the boundaries between the two worlds.

The UBS project aligns with Singapore’s Variable Capital Company (VCC) fund structure and falls within the scope of Project Guardian, championed by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).

Structured in this way, UBS believes that the project design lends itself to the ability to bring various forms of real-world assets (RWAs) to the blockchain. Furthermore, it establishes a favorable rapport with regulatory authorities in Singapore, a jurisdiction known for its forward-thinking, crypto-friendly financial regulatory environment.

Public blockchain use

This new offering relies upon a smart contract that’s run on the Ethereum public blockchain, encapsulating the money market fund. Through this smart contract use, the subscription and redemption processes can be simplified. That will represent a major change, given that those processes have traditionally been laden with paperwork and delays.

In the first iteration, large TradFi firms like UBS considered the use of private blockchains but as Matt Hougan, the CIO of crypto asset manager Bitwise, pointed out, this particular initiative is indicative of a shift towards public blockchains. Hougan stated:

“Remember when TradFi projects were built on private blockchains? They are all being built on Ethereum today. Progress.”

RWA tokenization potential

The tokenization of real-world assets has the potential to revolutionize digital asset investments by offering transparency, security, and trust. It not only paves the way for a better understanding of digital assets but also accelerates their adoption. UBS’s pilot project represents another significant move in this direction.

With increasing support from regulatory bodies like MAS, the fusion of digital assets with traditional financial structures is likely to witness a myriad of large-scale implementations in the not too distant future.

UBS Tokenize

UBS harnessed the power of its in-house tokenization service, UBS Tokenize, to seamlessly conduct the controlled pilot of the tokenized money market fund. The initiative falls squarely within the purview of UBS’s global distributed ledger technology strategy, which aims to elevate fund distribution and issuance to greater levels of efficiency by leveraging the capabilities of both private and public blockchains.

UBS Tokenize also featured in a separate initiative earlier this year in Hong Kong, facilitating the issuance of digital structured notes on the Ethereum blockchain via the Bank of China Investment (BOCI).

The momentum behind the tokenization of real-world assets has been building in recent years, with various protocols focusing on real-world assets consistently outperforming other sub-sectors of decentralized finance.

Titi Financial Announces $TITI Airdrop

Titi Financial Announces $TITI AirdropTiti Financial, the team behind Titi Protocol, a project that aims to further its $TiUSD algorithmic stablecoin, announced that it is currently distributing the first round of airdrops of its $TITI governance token.Taking to social media, the Singapore-based project encouraged interested parties to check their eligibility for the airdrop on the project’s website. In a Medium blog post, the project stated: “In order to give back to the users who have supported us all the way, TiTi protocol has decided to conduct the first round of airdrops to community users.”An algorithmic stablecoinTiTi Protocol is a decentralized, 100% collateral-backed, ‘use-to-earn’ algorithmic stablecoin. It aims to provide diversified and decentralized financial services based on the crypto-native stablecoin system, with an autonomous monetary policy.Alongside $TITI as the project’s governance token, $TiUSD is the accompanying stablecoin issued by TiTi Protocol.Initial DEX offering (IDO)The airdrop runs until May 9. Once that process has been completed, the project intends to launch on mainnet through an initial DEX offering (IDO). IDO volume will be 10 million $TITI, 1% of total issuance, with an initial price per token of $0.06.Launching on the Ethereum blockchain, the IDO commences on May 10, with the sale running until 8:00 UTC on May 13. Buyers have until 08:00 UTC on May 14 to claim their tokens. Total token supply has been set at 1,000,000,000 $TITI. Purchase amount parameters have been set, with a minimum to maximum range extending from $100 to $3,000. The $TITI token can be purchased using USDC, USDT or DAI stablecoin. The project has advised participants to prepare by having an Ethereum compatible wallet available, such as MetaMask, Gnosis Safe or WalletConnect.$3.5 million fund raiseLast month, the project disclosed that it had been successful in raising $3.5 million in funding. The funding round was led by California-based Spartan Group, a blockchain advisory and asset management firm. Other venture investors included SevenX Ventures, Incuba Alpha, DeFi Alliance, Agnostic Fund, Fourth Revolution Capital and Solidity Venture. A number of individual investors associated with Alpha Venture DAO and 0x1b from Fold Finance also participated.Overcoming algorithmic design shortcomingsIt’s interesting to see a renewed interest in algorithmic stablecoins after the epic collapse of Terra Luna in 2022. Additionally, it’s noteworthy that an institutional investment appetite exists given that backdrop. Lead investor Spartan Group cited the depegging risk alongside poor liquidity as being a known problem where algorithmic stablecoins are concerned. However, the investor believes that the Titi Protocol has the necessary design elements incorporated to counteract these issues. One of the key features of the protocol is that liquidity providers only need to provide single sided liquidity to Titi automated market makers (AMMs). The protocol itself covers the other side of that process, doing the math to mint the equivalent value of TiUSD.In April, the project also announced a partnership with Alpha Venture DAO. The decentralized venture capital fund is financed by its own community. Furthermore, Titi Finance can call on the expertise and skills of the DAOs members.Photo by CoinWire Japan on Unsplash

Fair Square Lab to Develop Blockchain-Based Shareholder Meeting PlatformSouth Korean Web3 technology company Fair Square Lab announced on Friday that it is in the process of developing a blockchain-based platform for holding electronic shareholder general meetings. The firm said that it has applied for two patents for technologies related to blockchain-based electronic shareholder meetings. One is related to their operation methods and systems, and the other is associated with the utilization of voting rights tokens.Photo by Benjamin Child on UnsplashEmpowering shareholdersIn shareholder general meetings, many minority shareholders are often unable to attend in person, thereby finding it difficult to effectively exercise their opinions or rights during the decision-making process of a company. Fair Square Lab’s pending patents aim to address this issue by enabling more shareholders to easily participate in shareholder meetings through an electronic medium. Utilizing blockchain technology would also ensure the integrity and security of voting processes.Fair Square Lab’s growing portfolioWith this latest development, Fair Square Lab is now poised to possess a total of eight blockchain-related patents. Its other patents encompass areas like managing wallets in the blockchain network, generating wallet addresses for security token platforms, and preventing erroneous transfers of security tokens on a blockchain network. The company said that it is continuously working to secure intellectual property rights for its blockchain business, including design patents and its own trademark.“We have been consistently striving to secure intellectual property rights by linking research and development with the core blockchain technologies that we have accumulated over the years. We plan to obtain a total of 12 core technology patents by the end of this year,” said Jake Kim, CEO of Fair Square Lab.
