Korean crypto exchange Foblgate last Thursday announced its adoption of virtual asset data analysis solutions from blockchain data analysis firm Chainalysis, which has significantly enhanced its ability to combat illegal money laundering of virtual assets and cybercrime.

“As crimes involving virtual assets continue to rise, the introduction of Chainalysis’ solutions empowers us to address a wider range of diverse and advanced virtual asset-related crimes,” said Ahn Hyun-jun, CEO of Foblgate.

Chainalysis’ specialized solutions

Chainalysis provides data, software, services, and research to governmental agencies, exchanges, financial institutions, insurance companies, and cybersecurity firms all over the world, aiding in solving high-profile criminal cases and expanding consumer access to cryptocurrency safely.

Foblgate will use two of its products, Know Your Transaction (KYT) and Reactor, to strengthen safety and security measures on its exchange platform.

KYT is a cryptocurrency compliance product that combines blockchain technology, a simple interface, and a real-time application programming interface (API) to map data, monitor crypto transactions, and provide safe access to decentralized finance.

Meanwhile, Reactor is an investigation software that connects cryptocurrency transactions to real-world activity. This allows users to visualize cryptocurrency flows and trace transactions across blockchains.

Both solutions automatically detect patterns of potential high-risk activities then issue alerts accordingly and link numerous addresses to actual entities (individuals or organizations associated with virtual asset wallet addresses.)

By integrating this technology, Foblgate can restrict deposits and withdrawals made by high-risk entities, including unregistered overseas virtual asset exchanges. It can also ensure transparency in virtual asset trading within its domain.

Taking security measures a step further

Foblegate is also taking other measures to further earn trust as a secure exchange by bolstering its countermeasures to cybercrime. Notably, it has established a partnership with GTOne, a company specializing in governance and compliance solutions including anti-money laundering (AML). Through this collaboration, it will be able to thoroughly comply with the Act on Reporting and Using Specified Financial Transaction Information.

This strategic move towards innovative blockchain data analysis solutions not only underscores Foblgate’s commitment to regulatory compliance and user security but also a proactive stance against emerging challenges in the realm of virtual assets and cybercrime.

e-CNY Payments Enabled for Hong Kong Visitors From Mainland China

e-CNY Payments Enabled for Hong Kong Visitors From Mainland ChinaBank of China’s Hong Kong arm recently launched a digital yuan shopping festival, aiming to spur local consumption and promote the adoption of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). The festival, which commenced on July 18, allows visitors from mainland China to make purchases in Hong Kong using the digital yuan.Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited (BOCHK), a subsidiary of China’s central bank, initiated trials of e-CNY cross-border payments in Hong Kong last year, paving the way for the current shopping festival.Photo by Eric Prouzet on UnsplashSubsidized useAccording to a press release published by BOCHK earlier this week, as of July 18, digital yuan wallet holders have been able to use China’s CBDC to make payments at over 200 participating merchants across Hong Kong. Furthermore, consumers have the opportunity to receive shopping subsidies in digital yuan by scanning QR codes at specific stores, as stated in the BOCHK press release. The range of merchants accepting e-CNY payments spans from electronics sellers and pharmacies to supermarkets. Among the participants is U Select, a Hong Kong-based supermarket chain with a wide presence of more than 90 stores throughout the city.BOCHK strategically chose the summer tourist season for the expansion of e-CNY payments in Hong Kong. Chen Guang, representing BOCHK, mentioned the influx of tourists to the special administrative region, presenting a prime opportunity to attract more users and bolster local consumption through this cross-border shopping festival. The move makes BOCHK the first institution to partake in the cross-border e-CNY trial in Hong Kong. In December 2022, the bank initiated the first phase of its “digital yuan exclusive experience,” which allowed a limited number of BOCHK consumers to shop in the city using the digital yuan.Adoption strategyThe digital yuan has witnessed robust adoption in recent times, with China leading the global development of CBDCs. The Bank of China has been actively striving to advance and popularize the use of digital yuan in the country. Various initiatives, including business loans, trial expansions, and partnerships with prominent technology firms, have been undertaken to propel the widespread adoption of the digital currency. The introduction of the digital yuan shopping festival in Hong Kong signifies yet another significant step in China’s efforts to promote its CBDC and drive its usage in both domestic and international transactions. With over 200 merchants already participating and a seamless payment experience for tourists, the festival has the potential to encourage further adoption and shape the future of digital payments in the region. As this initiative gains momentum, it will be crucial to observe its impact on local consumption and the broader implications for CBDC adoption in the global financial landscape. The rate of China’s CBDC development and beyond that, the intent with which it is striving to drive adoption through a seemingly never-ending series of initiatives has been unmatched by any other nation. With that, the first real results of the active and widespread use of a CBDC are going to come from the country that makes up one-fifth of the world economy.

Axie Infinity Moves Further Mainstream with App Store Release

Axie Infinity Moves Further Mainstream with App Store ReleaseThe developer of Axie Infinity, one of Asia’s most iconic Web3 projects to date, has released a version of its latest game on Apple’s App Store.Photo by James Yarema on UnsplashGame adoption strategyAxie Infinity’s Origins game is a card-based strategy game that allows players to collect, own and use a limitless variety of creatures to take into combat. Sky Mavis, the Singapore-headquartered developer behind Axie Infinity, has taken an interesting approach to bring about adoption for what will ultimately be a Web3 game.Initially, the game was launched on iOS with zero Web3 aspects to it. NFTs will not feature. Players will be given free non-NFT “starter characters.” That’s an entirely different approach to the one employed on the original Axie Infinity game. In that instance, players had to acquire NFT-based characters, by either renting or buying them, in order to participate in the game from the outset. While those starter characters will remain non-NFT in nature, the plan is to facilitate players in purchasing NFT-based characters at a later stage, as they progress within the game. Axie Infinity Co-Founder and COO Aleksander Leonard Larsen explained the strategy in an interview with Decrypt:“Starter Axies will remain as non-NFTs, but eventually as people buy other Axies in app we will want [to] turn them into NFTs.”App Store listingIt appears that the firm has been working on an Apple App Store listing for quite some time already. Larsen explained: “We have been in touch with Apple for about two years now, after a lot of trial and error, the current version is a lite version of Axie Origins with more to follow.”In a social media post, the project confirmed the significance of the listing: “We believe this is the first time that Apple has agreed to make an externally-purchased NFT usable on the App Store.” The initial step to getting listed on the large application platforms started out with a feature-limited Origins listing on the Malaysian version of the Google PlayStore in December 2022, before getting listed on that platform on a broader basis. The project outlined that it was following a similar strategy with Apple. This release will see the Axie Infinity Origin game listed on the Apple App Store relative to the following markets: Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Venezuela, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. The expectation is that the game will be listed in more territories as matters progress.Token price increaseAs the game runs on Sky Mavis’s Ronin network, an Ethereum sidechain, players who own Axie NFTs will still be able to utilize them in gameplay via the iOS version. The significance of the listing wasn’t lost on Axie Infinity community members. The unit price of the Axie Infinity Shards ($AXS) token, a governance token for the Axie Infinity gaming ecosystem, increased by 8% on Wednesday.Axie has proven to be a standout Web3 project for the Asian region. Axie’s developer, Sky Mavis is headquartered in Singapore although the project first emerged via its Vietnam-based development team. The original Axie game, which captured the imagination of crypto-enthusiasts more so than traditional gamers due to its ‘play-to-earn’ model, really came into its own during the pandemic. In particular, the game garnered a lot of adoption in the Philippines due to the opportunity it presented to Filipinos to earn tokens as a result of gameplay.
