Top Korean Crypto Exchanges Witness Surge in Listings and Delistings During H1

Web3 & Enterprise·July 25, 2023, 5:34 AM

In the first half of this year, South Korea’s top five cryptocurrency exchanges experienced notable growth in the number of newly added cryptocurrencies to their platforms. However, they also observed a significant surge in the number of cryptocurrencies being delisted.

Delisting and listing

According to a report by local news outlet Etoday, the nation’s five leading exchanges Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit, and Gopax ceased trading for a total of 51 cryptocurrencies during the first six months of this year. This marked an 88% increase compared to the 27 cryptocurrencies delisted in the previous six-month period. During the first half of last year, the number of delisted tokens was 48.

Among the five exchanges, Coinone took the lead by delisting the highest number of cryptocurrencies, totaling 24. Bithumb followed with 14 delisted tokens, Gopax with six, Upbit with five, and Korbit with two. Notably, Coinone continued its delisting spree this month, removing an additional five cryptocurrencies from its platform. Most cryptos were delisted because their projects and services were not operating normally.

The significant number of delisted tokens at Coinone appears to be linked to the involvement of its former employees in the unlawful listing of certain tokens. These individuals reportedly received bribes in exchange for listing a total of 46 cryptocurrencies on the trading platform. Among these tokens were PICA and PURE, which are no longer traded on the exchange.

Only five cryptocurrencies were delisted according to the decision made by the Digital Asset eXchange Alliance (DAXA), a self-regulatory group consisting of the aforementioned five crypto exchanges. The delisted tokens were REP, BASIC, OMG, SRM, and PCI. This indicates that most of the affected cryptocurrencies were exclusively traded on one of the DAXA member exchanges, indicating that DAXA’s listing and delisting guidelines were largely ineffective.

Meanwhile, there has been a notable surge in the number of newly added cryptocurrencies. Bithumb, for instance, took the lead by listing an impressive 63 new tokens, nearly three times the number listed by Upbit (22). In the same vein, Coinone added 14 tokens, while Korbit and Gopax followed with six and three new listings, respectively.

Profit squeeze

Last year, crypto trading platforms adopted a conservative approach when it came to listing and delisting procedures, prioritizing investor protection. However, their stance shifted as the global crypto market encountered a significant decline in trading volume amid crypto winter. This decrease in trading activity subsequently led to reduced operating profits, compelling the platforms to list more cryptocurrencies.

With the exception of Upbit, which maintains a dominant market share in the nation, the outlook on crypto exchanges appears more or less grim. In particular, Coinone, Korbit, and Gopax are in the red. Bithumb, while still in profit, saw its operating profit last year falling 80% year-over-year to 163.5 billion KRW ($127.9 million). This trend continued this year, with Bithumb’s operating profit In the first quarter of this year recording 16.2 billion KRW, an 80% decrease compared to the same period last year.

In light of this development, an industry insider, who wished to stay anonymous, told Etoday that while the market’s total trading volume is witnessing a considerable decline, Upbit’s dominance is still growing. This individual also noted that the decrease in trading volume and the resulting deficit are exerting pressure on exchanges to expand their cryptocurrency listings.

Malaysia Looking to Wean Itself Off Dollar Dependency

Malaysia Looking to Wean Itself Off Dollar DependencyAccording to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, China is willing to engage in discussions with Malaysia regarding the creation of an Asian Monetary Fund. This proposal, which has been circulating for decades, aims to decrease the dependence on the US dollar.©Pexels/Sergei StarostinAsian Monetary FundAnwar highlighted the necessity to minimize reliance on the dollar and the International Monetary Fund and proposed the establishment of this fund at the Boao forum in Hainan last week. He stressed that the fund would aid in diversifying the financial landscape of Asia and improving its resilience against economic challenges.Following a state visit to China last week, Anwar stated that “there is no reason for Malaysia to continue depending on the dollar.” The Prime Minister told the Malaysian parliament on Tuesday that China’s President Xi Jingping was receptive to the idea of an Asian Monetary Fund and welcomed further discussions on such a proposal.Anwar Ibrahim, serving as both the Finance Minister and Prime Minister of Malaysia, stated that the country’s central bank is already taking measures to allow for negotiations between Malaysia and China using their respective currencies, the ringgit and renminbi. The robustness of the US dollar poses a significant challenge for Malaysia and other Asian countries, particularly as Malaysia is a net importer of food. In September 2022, the Bloomberg dollar index reached an all-time high, leading to a decline in the value of the ringgit and other Southeast Asian currencies to levels not seen in decades. As a result, Anwar Ibrahim’s proposal for a shift towards bilateral trade negotiations with China using the ringgit and renminbi holds the potential to alleviate some of the region’s dependence on the dollar and reduce the impact of its fluctuations.International shift away from dollarThis development comes as other officials in the region, particularly Singapore, have been discussing strategies to manage the effects of a dominant US dollar that has weakened local currencies and been used as an instrument of economic power by the United States. There has been a raft of deals struck in recent weeks all pointing towards an international shift away from the US dollar as the global reserve currency. Russia has agreed with China to trade in renminbi. A major trade deal was struck recently between China and Brazil that will see the two countries trade in reals and renminbi. Major oil producer Saudi Arabia has made similar soundings and signed similar deals with Beijing.Bitcoin as a reserve currencyAll of this recent upheaval has brought further consideration of bitcoin acting as a reserve currency back into view. It’s expected that even if there is a shift away from the US dollar, the renminbi won’t be capable of acting as a single dominant global reserve currency. Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, Bloomberg Intelligence Crypto Market Analyst Jamie Coutts suggested that bitcoin’s performance in Q1, 2023 marks “a significant milestone in its ascendancy as a potential global reserve asset.”Coutts believes that it marks the first occasion that the leading cryptocurrency has acted as a safe haven asset during a liquidity crisis. Bitcoin remains at an early stage of development. Nobody expects that it could serve as the global reserve currency at this point. However, it is not unreasonable to anticipate it increasingly growing into a role as a reserve currency used for international trade and settlement. Especially so, as issues bubble over relative to banking and a desire to escape the clutches of US dollar domination.

Gyeonggi Officials with Cryptocurrencies Clear of Professional Conflicts in Virtual Assets

Gyeonggi Officials with Cryptocurrencies Clear of Professional Conflicts in Virtual AssetsGyeonggi Province, South Korea’s most populated province surrounding the national capital of Seoul, announced on October 26 (local time) that the duties of all crypto-holding officials ranked 4 or higher in the provincial government are not associated with virtual assets. In Korea, public officials are ranked from nine to one, with one being the highest position. In anticipation of the amended Public Service Ethics Act coming into effect on December 14, the Gyeonggi provincial government introduced a revised employee code of conduct in August. This required officials of rank 4 or higher to report their crypto holdings within 10 days starting from August 21.Photo by Nattu Adnan on UnsplashReported crypto ownershipThe result indicated that out of 228 officials, 23 reported owning virtual assets. Among these, 15 officials held cryptocurrencies valued at less than KRW 1 million ($738), while the remaining 8 had holdings exceeding that amount. To determine any potential involvement with cryptocurrencies in their official duties, the Gyeonggi government examined the roles and responsibilities of these officials within their respective departments. Following this review, the matter was forwarded to the Gyeonggi Public Service Ethics Committee for further scrutiny.Ethics committee reviewOn October 20, the committee convened to assess the relationship between the officials’ duties and their crypto holdings. They unanimously concluded that none of the 23 officials had any ties to crypto in their official roles. The newly revised code of conduct elaborates on the conditions under which a public official’s responsibilities are associated with virtual assets. Specifically, an official’s duties are considered linked to virtual assets if they are involved in formulating or implementing crypto-related policies or laws; conducting related investigations, inquiries, or inspections; engaging in the registration and oversight of cryptocurrency exchanges; or if they are involved in supporting or overseeing the development of crypto technologies. In light of these definitions, officials who engage in any of the above roles are strictly prohibited from capitalizing on any crypto-related information they encounter during their professional duties for personal trading or investment. Furthermore, officials who either currently shoulder or have previously carried out such responsibilities are required to disclose any crypto holdings they acquire. In the future, once the revised Ethics Act is implemented, the Gyeonggi government will remain fully committed to preventing conflicts of interest among public officials. To bolster these efforts, Gyeonggi will introduce additional measures, including a thorough verification process for the accuracy of their cryptocurrency holdings reports. In situations where a public official with cryptocurrency holdings is assigned a position related to virtual assets, Gyeonggi will issue individualized instructions. These directives may entail either the liquidation of their cryptocurrency holdings or their removal from the specific role in question.Meanwhile, Gyeonggi will enhance its endeavors to furnish educational resources pertaining to virtual asset reporting. Moreover, the local government will restrict officials from holding virtual assets if they fall under financial disclosure obligations and are deemed to possess information about or exert influence on virtual assets.
