Lawsuit Sees Further Chinese Crypto TV Coverage

Policy & Regulation·June 07, 2023, 12:18 AM

China’s state broadcaster, CCTV, rarely covers the topic of crypto but in the space of the past three weeks, it has covered the subject twice, with the latest segment covering the news of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing a lawsuit against global crypto exchange, Binance.

Bad press

The segment, which aired on CCTV, provided a brief overview of the lawsuit, stating that the SEC accused Binance, its Co-Founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ), and its American affiliate Binance.US of violating US securities laws. The report also noted that the prices of Bitcoin and Binance’s native BNB coin experienced a decline following the news.

The lawsuit filed by the SEC received significant media attention due to Binance’s position as the world’s largest crypto exchange. The crypto industry in the US has been under increased scrutiny following the recent troubles faced by FTX, another major player in the market. Prosecutors have alleged that FTX engaged in fraudulent activities that harmed its users.

Many blame US regulators who spent hundreds of hours with FTX executives working on projects, and US Capitol Hill politicians, 33% of whom received money from FTX, as being culpable for the FTX collapse. Despite this, it’s clear that the collapse is being leveraged to effect a clampdown on the digital assets sector.

It is worth noting that the CCTV broadcast also made mention of a lawsuit filed by the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) against Binance and CZ in March. This lawsuit, similar to the SEC’s, focused on the sale of crypto derivatives. It is unclear whether CCTV covered the CFTC lawsuit when it was initially filed.

CCTV’s coverage of crypto-related news is rare, making this particular broadcast significant and garnering wider attention. The outcome of legal action taken by the SEC against Binance is being watched carefully as it will likely have implications for digital asset regulation going forward.

Previous coverage

In a previous broadcast last month, CCTV aired a segment that featured cryptocurrencies, including the Bitcoin logo. Ironically, given the nature of this latest reporting, Binance’s CZ regarded that previous coverage as a noteworthy event. Historically, such coverage has often preceded bull runs in the crypto market. The segment showcased what appeared to be a Bitcoin ATM in Hong Kong, displaying a prominent blue Bitcoin logo and an option to “Buy Bitcoins.”

NFTs were also highlighted in the segment. Many speculated that the coverage signified a softening of the stance of the Chinese authorities in relation to crypto. However, the video of the initial crypto segment was taken down from the broadcaster’s website shortly after CZ tweeted about it.

Despite it not being the most positive of news, CCTV’s coverage of the Binance lawsuit and its previous segment on cryptocurrencies indicates a growing interest in the industry from mainstream media outlets. The attention from a state broadcaster like CCTV suggests that regulators and authorities in China are closely monitoring developments in the crypto space and considering their potential impact on the broader financial landscape.

Matrixport expands into Europe via CFAM acquisition

Matrixport, a Singapore-headquartered digital assets financial services firm, announced the acquisition of Switzerland-based Crypto Finance Asset Management (CFAM), a regulated crypto fund management firm. The acquisition, completed by way of an all-cash deal, signifies Matrixport’s expansion into the European market. The company announced the deal via a blog post published on the Matrixport website on Sept. 30. Photo by Lin Mei on UnsplashCFAM rebrandAs part of the acquisition, CFAM will be rebranded to Matrixport Asset Management AG (MAM), providing institutional-grade crypto investment solutions, while continuing to act as a crypto market infrastructure provider.  CFAM CEO Stijn Vander Straeten stated that the company’s strategy focused on “trading, custody and staking as well as other post-trade services.” He added, “This move allows us to put all our focus on expanding our core services within the digital asset ecosystem in Switzerland, Germany and across the European markets.” CFAM had formed part of the Crypto Finance Group, an entity part-owned by the Deutsche Börse Group. Regulatory complaint acquisitionIn its press release, Matrixport outlined that the acquisition has been completed with regulatory approval having been granted by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA), the Swiss independent financial markets regulator, which supervises banks, insurance companies and financial institutions in Switzerland. CFAM became the first FINMA-approved manager of a crypto fund in Switzerland. Commenting on the acquisition, Matrixport Co-Founder and CEO John Ge, stated: “We are delighted with the establishment of MAM and warmly welcome the team to the Matrixport family. The acquisition enables clients access to the most innovative, compliant crypto asset management products, and aligns with our strategy to further expand services in Europe.” Personnel changesA number of personnel changes have been made as part of the acquisition. Stefan Schwitter has been appointed as CEO of MAM. Schwitter previously held the role of head of asset management at CFAM. The executive claimed that the complementary strengths of Matrixport and CFAM “will add value to the existing and future client base of Matrixport Group on a global level.” Matrixport was established in 2019 and currently holds over $6 billion in assets under management (AUM). Its founders include Jihan Wu, the co-founder of Chinese crypto miner manufacturer Bitmain and Singapore-based crypto cloud mining company Bitdeer. The firm is licensed as a money services business (MSB) in the United States, while also being licensed to trade in Hong Kong as a trust or company service provider (TCSP) and as a money lender. Matrixport offers its accredited investor and institutional clients over-the-counter (OTC) services, prime brokerage services, digital asset custody through qualified custodian Cactus Custody, asset management and access to real-world asset (RWA) tokenization. In September, the company offered tokenized RWA access in the form of XAUm, a gold-backed token, via its subsidiary company, Matrixdock. It emerged earlier this year that Matrixport had been listed on the Global Unicorn Index, a list of companies compiled by the Huron Research Institute, believed to have a valuation in excess of $1 billion while not yet listed on a public exchange.

Animoca founder: $200T crypto market within 10 years

The global cryptocurrency market is poised for unprecedented growth, potentially reaching $200 trillion within a decade, according to Yat Siu, co-founder of Animoca Brands, a prominent Hong Kong-based Web3 game software company and venture capital firm. 2-3x within 18 monthsCurrently valued at approximately $2.7 trillion according to data from crypto aggregator CoinGecko, the cryptocurrency market is set to double or triple in the near term, Siu predicted on The Valr Podcast on May 28. “In the near term — within 12 to 18 months — we can conceive of a doubling or tripling of the space,” he stated, expressing strong confidence in the industry's future milestones. Siu elaborated on his bold forecast, suggesting that over a five to ten-year period, the market could accelerate by 100 to 200 times, potentially reaching a valuation of $200 trillion or even higher. In conversation with Farzam Ehsani, the co-founder of Valr, a platform that allows users to buy, sell, store and transfer crypto assets, Siu said:“I think we could reach that kind of number within a decade.” This explosive growth, according to Siu, will be driven by billions of people becoming digital property owners within the Web3 ecosystem. Siu stated: “It is entirely conceivable that we’re going to have a billion property owners because we’re going to have a billion token holders. This is not possible in the physical world.”Photo by Pierre Borthiry - Peiobty on UnsplashAsia fastest growing marketSiu also pointed out the regional dynamics within the Web3 space, noting that Asia has emerged as the fastest-growing market. “Right now, the leading force in Web3 is clearly Asia,” he argued, citing robust adoption rates in regions such as Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Japan. In contrast, jurisdictions like the United States are lagging behind, primarily due to regulatory uncertainties. Siu pointed out that historically, the United States has tended to take a leadership role where new technology is concerned. Web3 is turning out to be the exception to that rule. With that, he thinks that it is Asia that will lead the way and that it will continue to lead for the foreseeable future where Web3 is concerned. Bullish on BitcoinHis optimism about the Web3 market's potential aligns with his bullish stance on Bitcoin, currently standing at a market capitalization of $1.3 trillion. Siu made another bold prediction recently, expressing confidence that Bitcoin would eventually reach $1 million. At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading at $68,346. While that’s far from his $1 million unit price prediction, he did state at Web Summit Rio in April that it would do so “over time.”  That bullishness from the Animoca founder has also manifested itself within the company itself. In early May, the company announced its entry into the Bitcoin ecosystem by endorsing the Opal Foundation, a Bitcoin-centric protocol. At the time, Siu suggested that Bitcoin is now primed for Web3. Siu's projections reflect a broader optimism in the cryptocurrency industry, where rapid technological advancements and increasing adoption rates are expected to drive significant growth. As more individuals and institutions embrace digital assets, the potential for exponential market expansion becomes increasingly plausible.
