During a journalism conference held in Korea, the founder of a blockchain-based news app provider delivered a talk to underline the potential of blockchain technology in journalism, according to a press release by blockchain-based news app provider Publish.

2023 World Journalists Conference

The 2023 World Journalists Conference, hosted by the Korean Press Association, commenced its six-day run on Tuesday, marking the event’s eleventh iteration. Being convened for the first time in four years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference saw the attendance of over 70 journalists from 50 countries who were gathered to discuss the future of journalism in the context of digital transformation.

 

Token reward system

Kwon proposed a revenue model for media companies that incorporate a token reward system to encourage reader engagement.

Under this system, news enthusiasts can participate in various activities, such as reading and sharing articles, or leaving comments, and be rewarded with tokens. This approach can foster a sustainable community and cultivate a loyal customer base, enabling writers to prioritize journalism over creating clickbait articles. A more efficient advertisement distribution process can also be achieved through this system.

 

Blockchain technology

The news app developer aims to implement blockchain technology to enhance, rather than dismantle, the existing journalism model. Blockchain technology can be used to record and validate every activity in the news industry, which can then be rewarded with cryptocurrencies.

Publish’s decentralized identifier (DID) app enables users to take part in surveys without revealing their personal information, and will also support fundraising for news writing.

 

NFTs

Media companies can also explore additional revenue streams by creating non-fungible tokens (NFTs). By tokenizing their articles and photos, firms can establish ownership and authenticity, facilitating more efficient transactions.

Kwon noted that this blockchain-driven incentive system not only allows media organizations to improve their user experience, but also empowers readers to engage with journalism as active stakeholders, sharing its value in various ways.

It’s being speculated that the move is a precursor to Ant Group’s application for a financial holding license in China. Furthermore, it could be part of a bid to revive its suspended initial public offering (IPO) in Hong Kong.The company had been under regulatory scrutiny from the Chinese authorities over the course of the past three years. That investigation culminated in a hefty fine of 7.12 billion yuan ($995 million). The consequences of that regulatory investigation have taken a toll on the company’s valuation, plunging from a peak of $280 billion before the IPO cancellation in 2020 to a current estimated value of $79 billion.Blockchain business implicationsBy pursuing this restructuring, Ant Group seeks to refocus on its core financial services within China. It’s unclear what the outcome will be for non-core businesses such as blockchain-based ventures. Potentially spinning these businesses off could unlock hidden value in blockchain-related activities. However, such a move would also raise questions regarding the future of these non-core businesses and their potential impact on the broader digital asset industry.AntChain, the blockchain technology developed by Ant Group, holds a prominent position in China, being widely adopted across various sectors. Should Ant Group decide to spin off or divest this business, it could significantly alter the blockchain landscape in the country.Originally introduced as “Ant Blockchain” in 2017 alongside Alipay, AntChain expanded its services to provide blockchain-as-a-Service (BaaS) to Ant Group’s partners in 2018. In mid-2020, Ant Group took a step further by transforming Ant Blockchain into a separate entity and rebranding it as AntChain. Besides blockchain solutions, AntChain is also actively involved in developing Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT), risk control technologies, and other value-added tech services.The wide adoption of Ant Group’s blockchain technology has played a pivotal role in promoting blockchain implementation in China. Last year the company unveiled a blockchain storage engine called Letus, as a mechanism to lower storage costs of blockchain networks. Another project saw it partner with a Malaysian investment bank in an effort to develop a crypto trading and portfolio management app. These are individual instances of the company’s varied activities in the blockchain space.Any alterations to its blockchain operations could impact the pace and scale of blockchain adoption in the country. While the Chinese authorities have discouraged crypto trading and mining, they have very much encouraged blockchain development.The restructuring appears to be a response to the increasing regulatory pressures in the fintech industry. A further tightening of regulations on blockchain operations for fintech companies might potentially hinder innovation and growth in the sector.Most likely the guiding hand of the government in China will have a material effect on how these blockchain-based businesses develop in the event of an Ant Group restructuring that would see them being spun out.

It has partnered with over 400 major companies, including Netmarble, LINE Studio, Ubisoft, and Zynga, securing some five million subscribers worldwide. “We expect that users will be able to enjoy a new Web3 experience within the metaverse, where they can create their own content,” said Max Minchul Shin, CEO of Burrito Wallet.Elevating the metaverse experienceThrough the new partnership, Burrito Wallet will support wallet integration within The Sandbox’s platform by unifying the on-chain experience across services. Burrito Wallet users will thus have more convenient access to various content within The Sandbox, including LAND — the platform’s virtual real estate space for interacting and showcasing creativity — as well as personalized avatars and assets, and an NFT marketplace. Additionally, the company plans to enhance wallet utility by supporting the multi-chain functionality of SAND, The Sandbox’s utility token.“Our partnership with Burrito Wallet will make it easier and more convenient for users to enjoy The Sandbox,” said Cindy Lee, CEO of The Sandbox Korea.“We will continue to collaborate with companies from various fields to advance the Web3 market and establish ourselves as a distinguished wallet service in the global market,” Shin added.Rotonda’s global initiativesRotonda is actively collaborating with global projects to promote the mass adoption of Web3 and blockchain technology. Last month, it launched the iOS version of Burrito Wallet in a move to expand availability for Web3 users on all operating systems. The company also recently co-hosted Next Block 2023 with its parent company Bithumb to promote business collaboration and build an ecosystem for accelerating Web3 projects.

Hong Kong advances tokenization as institutions continue building amid market pullback

Hong Kong last week entered the pilot phase of Project Ensemble, an initiative focused on developing infrastructure for a tokenized market and creating a sandbox where institutions can test blockchain systems in real business environments. Set to run through 2026, the pilot involves the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), several banks, and other industry participants. Its early work will examine how tokenized deposits can be used in money market fund transactions and how these tools might support real-time liquidity and treasury management. Interoperability key to tokenizationCommenting on the development, Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) CEO Julia Leung said, “To scale tokenisation of investment products, interoperability is key.” She added that the measure announced on Nov. 13 by the HKMA “will gradually allow interbank settlement of tokenised deposits in real time 24/7.”Photo by Ibrahim Rifath on UnsplashFollowing the HKMA’s announcement, Ant International, the global arm of Ant Group, revealed that it is joining Project Ensemble’s Architecture Community. As part of this digital finance effort, Ant International will help design and advance the tokenization ecosystem in the special administrative region, contribute to defining industry standards, and support broader industry adoption. Corporate initiatives in digital financeSeparately, Ant International also signed a memorandum of understanding with Swiss bank UBS to explore new opportunities in tokenized deposits, leveraging Ant’s blockchain platform Whale. Under this partnership, UBS Digital Cash, a blockchain-based payment solution developed by UBS, will be used to support Ant International’s global treasury operations. Young Jin Yee, Co-Head UBS Global Wealth Management Asia Pacific and Country Head UBS Singapore, said the collaboration with Ant aims to achieve “a real-time, multi-currency payment solution that sets standards for transparency and efficiency.” Hong Kong has been seeing a noticeable pickup in crypto-related activity more broadly. According to a post on X by Unfolded, AMINA, a Swiss-regulated institution, is now the first international banking group to roll out full crypto trading and custody services in Hong Kong. Adding to this momentum, companies are stepping up their Bitcoin accumulation. In its third-quarter results announcement, Boyaa International, a Hong Kong–listed firm specializing in online card and board games, reported a quarter-over-quarter increase of 738 Bitcoin. As of Sept. 30, its total holdings stood at 4,091 Bitcoin at an average cost of about $68,114 per coin. Adoption trends and market contractionThis push into the crypto sector aligns with broader digital asset adoption across Asia. A recent survey by CoinDesk and Protocol Theory of 4,020 individuals aged 18 to 64 in 10 Asian countries found potential crypto ownership of around 25% among respondents with internet access. The survey also noted that roughly half of adults familiar with crypto plan to use it within the next year or so. Despite the uptick in activity and interest, the market itself is currently in a downturn, with Bitcoin falling below the $90,000 mark on Nov. 18 for the first time since April 22. Analyzing the move, CoinDesk’s Omkar Godbole said Bitcoin looks oversold, as the 14-day relative strength index (RSI) has slipped under 30, indicating the drop may be steep enough to trigger a pause or a possible rebound. Godbole drew a parallel with price action earlier in the year, noting that February was the last time the RSI fell below 30, when Bitcoin was trading under $80,000. After that decline, the market bottomed out at around $75,000 in April, a pattern that traders may be watching closely as they assess the current pullback. At the time of publication, Bitcoin was trading around $90,400 against USDT on Binance.
