Bithumb and Coinone, two of South Korea’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, have recently listed Tether (USDT) — the USD-pegged stablecoin issued by Tether Limited — according to an article by local news outlet Kyunghyang Games on Thursday (local time). Both exchanges support Tether trading on the TRON network.

Tether gains momentum in South Korea

Bithumb listed the currency today at KRW 1,316 in response to high investor demand. Meanwhile, Coinone, which listed Tether on Nov. 30 to become the first fiat-to-crypto exchange in the country to facilitate USDT/KRW trading, cited reasons such as Tether’s reliability and transparency, demonstrated by regular updates on its audits and reserves. The listing price was KRW 1,289.

Industry sources anticipate that USDT/KRW trading in South Korea will eventually lead to reduced transaction fees and a simplified transaction process for domestic traders. Previously, in order to access most overseas markets where USDT is used as the default currency, users have had to sell their assets overseas first and then repurchase USDT to participate in trading.

Simplified transactions are also expected to contribute to balancing pricing across different markets and reducing the Kimchi premium — a term used to describe the difference between trading prices of cryptocurrencies in Korea and in other foreign exchanges.

Promotional events

To mark the occasion, Bithumb is offering a promotional event where 0.02% of the price of maker orders placed by Dec. 11 will be distributed to users in Bitcoin on Dec. 14. Maker orders are those that are placed at an asking price that differs from the current price, which means it is added to the order book instead of being matched or executed immediately. These orders add liquidity to an order book.

Bithumb users can also make USDT withdrawals free of extra fees until Dec. 11. Coinone, on the other hand, requires a withdrawal fee of 1 USDT.

According to CoinMarketCap, Tether has the third-largest market capitalization at approximately $90.1 billion as of this writing. The token’s trading volume in the last 24 hours was $49.3 billion.

Thailand’s oldest bank launches stablecoin-based payments

Siam Commercial Bank (SCB), Thailand’s oldest bank and fourth-largest lender, has launched a cross-border payments service which depends upon the use of stablecoins.  The project is the culmination of a collaboration between SCB, SCB 10X, the disruptive technology investment arm of the SCBX Group, payment solutions provider Lightnet and blockchain development platform Fireblocks. It has successfully completed its testing phase within the Bank of Thailand’s regulatory sandbox, moving forward to the commercialization phase. According to Indian news portal Business News This Week, SCB launched the cross-border payments solution on October 16 in an effort to get out ahead of its TradFi peers relative to banking and financial services innovation.Photo by allPhoto Bangkok on PexelsFaster with lower costsThe service will enable 24/7 transfers on an international basis for the bank’s retail users. In accessing the service, users may use local currency to make transactions. Ordinarily cross-border payments implicate a number of steps in order to complete clearance, including the need to effect a currency conversion. Furthermore, banks need to maintain nostro/vostro accounts with foreign banks to complete such transfers.  In this instance, the bank is claiming that transactions using the service will be much faster than existing cross-border transfer options. The clearance and settlement process will be far more efficient in terms of the time required and the liquidity requirements. Pre-funding required in the legacy process has been eliminated, reducing capital requirements, while operational costs have also been reduced. SCB’s First Executive Vice President and Head of Digital Juristic and Payment, Thanawatn Kittisuwan, commented on the development, stating: “By integrating blockchain technology, the project promises a more efficient, reliable, and accessible solution for cross-border transactions. By leveraging blockchain technology and stablecoins, we are making cross-border remittances more efficient, reliable, and accessible for everyone. SCB has a long-standing tradition of embracing innovative technologies to enhance our financial services. This latest collaboration with Lightnet and Fireblocks builds upon SCB’s history of pioneering fintech solutions. ” Improved customer experienceLightnet CEO Tribodi Arunanondchai suggested that the new service will provide significant improvements to customers’ experience in cross-border money transfer. He added that the service “promotes financial inclusion as there is a lower capital requirement per transaction,” while strengthening Thailand’s position as an ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) financial hub.  SCB and Lightnet first partnered in 2020. At that point, the duo envisaged that there was scope to cooperate in order to facilitate payment processing and frictionless real-time remittances to Thailand from any point overseas with low fees. Lightnet relies upon the Velo Protocol to enable its remittance services. Back in 2022 the firm received a $50 million commitment from LDA Capital, with Lightnet earmarking the funding to boost cross-border payments over the Velo protocol. For its part SCB has demonstrated its interest in crypto beyond this Lightnet collaboration. In 2023 the bank struck a deal with South Korean crypto venture capital firm Hashed, with the objective of pooling resources and researching and exploring how best to deploy any research outcomes relative to the company’s affiliates. The bank has also been involved in developing an application for Thailand’s central bank digital currency, the digital baht.

CFX surges as Conflux teases yuan-pegged stablecoin & 3.0 launch

Conflux Network, a layer-1, regulatory-compliant Chinese blockchain focused on borderless transactions, has announced the upcoming launch of the Conflux 3.0 mainnet together with an offshore yuan-pegged stablecoin, resulting in its native CFX token surging.Photo by Eric Prouzet on UnsplashPartnershipA notice published on the website of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government on July 20 reported on the Conflux Tree Graph Technology and Ecological Development Conference, which was held in Shanghai over three days from July 18 to July 20. Over the course of the three-day event, the project announced a partnership with AnchorX, a Hong Kong-based fintech firm specializing in stablecoins, and Shenzhen-based Eastcompeace Technology.  The purpose of the initiative is to develop a stablecoin pegged to the offshore yuan (CNH), the version of China’s currency that circulates outside the mainland. The report outlined that in recent years, stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) have come to global attention.  Belt & Road InitiativeGiven this backdrop, it was outlined that “creating an independent and controllable high-performance public chain system” could be of great benefit to China and its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which sets out to develop infrastructure across 150 countries to facilitate trade with China. This is not the first point at which AnchorX has collaborated with Conflux. Back in February, the company received in-principle approval from the Astana Financial Services Authority (AFSA) in Kazakhstan to issue CNH-pegged stablecoins. Growing bilateral trade between Kazakhstan and China was cited as the rationale behind the license, given the need for cross-border payments. At the time, it was outlined that the AxCNH yuan-pegged stablecoin would be issued on the Conflux blockchain. It’s unclear if this same stablecoin is the focus of this latest development or whether an entirely new yuan-pegged stablecoin will be issued.AnchorX collaborated with Conflux in 2024 to bring about the issuance of AxHKD, a Hong Kong dollar-pegged stablecoin. The stablecoin runs on the Conflux blockchain, with the stablecoin issuer using OKLink Trust as its custodian. TokenPocket, a multi-chain crypto wallet project, also outlined on X on July 21 that it too is involved in the partnership with Conflux and AnchorX. The project outlined that it will support the growth of stablecoin adoption, the development of cross-border payment solutions and the promotion of tokenized RWAs in international markets through the collaboration.  Pilot projectsTokenPocket went on to explain that the companies plan to launch pilot projects in Central Asia, Southeast Asia and other regions, building “a compliant, secure, and innovative fintech framework to boost the role of the Conflux ecosystem as critical infrastructure for cross-border trade.” It was revealed at the conference that the mainnet release of Conflux 3.0 will occur in August. With the implementation of further optimized execution modules, the project expects 3.0 to result in a network throughput of 15,000 transactions per second (TPS).  These developments over the course of the weekend have had an impact on the unit price of Conflux’s native token, CFX. On July 19, the token was trading at around $0.1043. According to CoinMarketCap data, at the time of writing, it’s trading at $0.2232, a 2.58% increase over the past day.
