Dunamu, the blockchain and fintech firm that operates South Korea’s largest crypto exchange Upbit, announced Wednesday (local time) that Upbit has obtained the ISO 22301 certification, an international standard for security and resilience that evaluates a company’s business continuity management system (BCMS) based on its ability to protect against and respond to disruptive events. The firm disclosed that it acquired the certification from the U.S. International Accreditation Service (IAS) on Nov. 6.

Navigating risk management

More specifically, the ISO 22301 certification evaluates a company’s ability to maintain uninterrupted and stable business operations through the prevention, response and recovery in the event of accidents, man-made or natural disasters and more. It offers several benefits for companies, such as proof of compliance with legal requirements, which serves as a marketing advantage, and the prevention of large-scale damage.

To obtain the certification, companies must prepare in advance for unexpected disruptions by analyzing the level of impact that such events can have on business operations and the amount of time needed to recover, then put relevant policies in place to facilitate recovery. To maintain the certification, enterprises must also undergo an annual follow-up audit and a renewal audit every three years.

Commitment to business resilience

“We obtained the certification to protect user assets and provide safe services that do not stop in the face of external influences,” Dunamu said, emphasizing its commitment to enhancing service reliability and protecting investors. “We will not stop our efforts to become the most trusted cryptocurrency exchange.”

Upbit has previously acquired other ISO certifications, such as the ISO 27001 for information security; the ISO 27017 for information security in cloud computing; and the ISO 27701 for privacy management. The exchange also obtained ISMS-P in 2021, a certificate administered by Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT and Personal Information Protection Commission for information security and personal information management.

BC Card Accelerates Launch of NFT Guarantees for Secondhand Luxury Goods Trades

BC Card Accelerates Launch of NFT Guarantees for Secondhand Luxury Goods TradesSouth Korean credit card issuer BC Card announced on Sunday that it has applied for two domestic patents for blockchain technology that will be used to issue digital guarantees for purchases of luxury goods, such as bags, watches, and more. These guarantees will be minted as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that can later be accessed by buyers or sellers during secondhand trades, which often pose risks and uncertainty regarding product quality or authenticity.Enhancing trust and securityThese NFTs will be based on paper or digital payment receipts — which contain detailed information on purchase receipts, such as product names, payment amounts, purchase dates, and shop information — that a customer receives after purchasing goods at stores that accept BC cards.Photo by Towfiqu barbhuiya on UnsplashBecause the guarantees are stored on a blockchain, they are almost impossible to tamper with. BC Card anticipates that this service will offer advantages like boosted safety, convenience, and security for both buyers and sellers who wish to partake in transactions of secondhand luxury goods. In addition, the data distributed across servers eliminates concerns about data loss. To achieve this, BC Card plans to collaborate with telecommunications provider KT and BC’s subsidiary, VP, which specializes in electronic payment services.“Through this patent application, we expect to significantly enhance the trustworthiness of secondhand luxury goods transactions in Korea,” said Kwon Sun-moo, Director of the New Financial Research division at BC Card. “After the patents are registered, we plan to collaborate with companies under KT Group like KT Alpha as well as other distribution companies in a business-to-business-to-consumer (B2B2C) system.”Access through a digital walletCustomers can take a photo of a receipt with their phones or download it, then upload it to BC Card’s financial platform, Paybook. The photo is then converted into an image that is automatically stored as an NFT on the blockchain network.Once a seller registers a payment receipt for a product that they bought, then the subsequent NFT guarantee can be accessed or sent through their BC Card digital wallet — a feature that the company plans to launch soon — at any time during future transactions. This offers a convenient solution to the possibility of losing receipts, which traditionally requires manually downloading them again from the card company’s website or app.Revolutionizing secondhand tradeThis new technology could play a significant role in the booming resell and secondhand goods trading market, the company said. According to data from the Korea Internet & Security Agency last year, the domestic secondhand market has grown from a scale of KRW 4 trillion in 2008 to KRW 24 trillion in 2021 and is projected to exceed KRW 30 trillion this year.“Through the registration of payment receipts, we can analyze consumption patterns and even suggest improvements in spending habits to our customers,” Director Kwon highlighted.BC Card is also considering offering luxury appraisal and authentication services along with the future launch of the NFT service.

Ribbon Finance Enables Altcoin Options Trading

Ribbon Finance Enables Altcoin Options TradingSingapore’s Ribbon Finance, a project that offers a suite of DeFi protocols that help users access crypto-structured products, has enabled altcoin options trading via its Aevo decentralized exchange (DEX).The Ethereum-based platform has begun offering options relative to cryptocurrencies beyond the top two of Ethereum and Bitcoin. Examples of coins that users of Ribbon Finance’s Aevo DEX can access as options include Lido’s LDO, Sui’s SUI token, APT, the token of high throughput proof of stake-based blockchain Aptos, the ARB token of layer two Ethereum scaling network, Arbitrum and Litecoin (LTC).Trading options on-chainThe Aevo DEX project took to Twitter on Monday to announce the development. The project has named the options product “Aevo OTC,” terming it as “the best place to trade altcoin options on-chain.” The firm claims that it’s the first platform to allow users “to trade altcoin options on-chain, in size, with institutional grade liquidity providers.”To kick things off, users will be enabled in trading these altcoin options across weekly, bi-weekly and monthly maturities relative to thirteen crypto tokens. The project plans to rotate the list of coins available for options trading every month depending upon what it deems to be the most popular coins on the market at a given time.Early service adoptersAs Aevo is a DEX, it will utilize on-chain margin systems. When a user buys an option the counterparty is required to post margin of approximately 30% of the notional trade size in the form of US dollar stablecoin, USDC. That procedure is all on-chain and transparent, enabled via smart contracts.Although officially launching the product today, Aevo OTC has been used in production for a number of weeks already. Both digital assets firm Galaxy Digital and crypto-native investment firm CoinFund have already been using the product to trade options.Other early adopters of the product include DeFi R&D and liquid crypto investment strategies firm Re7 Capital and crypto options and structured derivatives firm, OrBit Markets. In fact, Galaxy and OrBit Markets, alongside GSR, are acting as market makers for the product, enabling users to get instant quotes.Developing the crypto options marketThe development means that market participants can now strategize and take advantage of trading altcoins relative to specific events that may be fundamental to a project, such as Litecoin’s halving, for instance. At a later stage, the project intends to enable users in writing options contracts to include customized margins and a specified counterparty. The crypto options market is still at a very early stage of development. Deribit has been the dominant crypto options platform. Ribbon Finance’s service rollout broadens that market, extending options trading beyond the current limited offering of bitcoin, ethereum and solana. The product is more capital efficient for market participants as its portfolio margin system calculates real-time margin requirements, in that way offsetting money-making and losing positions relative to a particular portfolio.Photo by Shubham Dhage on Unsplash
