Ribbon Finance Enables Altcoin Options Trading

Web3 & Enterprise·May 17, 2023, 12:14 AM

Singapore’s Ribbon Finance, a project that offers a suite of DeFi protocols that help users access crypto-structured products, has enabled altcoin options trading via its Aevo decentralized exchange (DEX).

The Ethereum-based platform has begun offering options relative to cryptocurrencies beyond the top two of Ethereum and Bitcoin. Examples of coins that users of Ribbon Finance’s Aevo DEX can access as options include Lido’s LDO, Sui’s SUI token, APT, the token of high throughput proof of stake-based blockchain Aptos, the ARB token of layer two Ethereum scaling network, Arbitrum and Litecoin (LTC).

Trading options on-chain

The Aevo DEX project took to Twitter on Monday to announce the development. The project has named the options product “Aevo OTC,” terming it as “the best place to trade altcoin options on-chain.” The firm claims that it’s the first platform to allow users “to trade altcoin options on-chain, in size, with institutional grade liquidity providers.”

To kick things off, users will be enabled in trading these altcoin options across weekly, bi-weekly and monthly maturities relative to thirteen crypto tokens. The project plans to rotate the list of coins available for options trading every month depending upon what it deems to be the most popular coins on the market at a given time.

Early service adopters

As Aevo is a DEX, it will utilize on-chain margin systems. When a user buys an option the counterparty is required to post margin of approximately 30% of the notional trade size in the form of US dollar stablecoin, USDC. That procedure is all on-chain and transparent, enabled via smart contracts.

Although officially launching the product today, Aevo OTC has been used in production for a number of weeks already. Both digital assets firm Galaxy Digital and crypto-native investment firm CoinFund have already been using the product to trade options.

Other early adopters of the product include DeFi R&D and liquid crypto investment strategies firm Re7 Capital and crypto options and structured derivatives firm, OrBit Markets. In fact, Galaxy and OrBit Markets, alongside GSR, are acting as market makers for the product, enabling users to get instant quotes.

Developing the crypto options market

The development means that market participants can now strategize and take advantage of trading altcoins relative to specific events that may be fundamental to a project, such as Litecoin’s halving, for instance. At a later stage, the project intends to enable users in writing options contracts to include customized margins and a specified counterparty.

The crypto options market is still at a very early stage of development. Deribit has been the dominant crypto options platform. Ribbon Finance’s service rollout broadens that market, extending options trading beyond the current limited offering of bitcoin, ethereum and solana.

The product is more capital efficient for market participants as its portfolio margin system calculates real-time margin requirements, in that way offsetting money-making and losing positions relative to a particular portfolio.

Bank of Korea Conducts Successful CBDC Pilot Test with Financial Institutions

Bank of Korea Conducts Successful CBDC Pilot Test with Financial InstitutionsThe Bank of Korea (BOK) announced yesterday in a press release that its central bank digital currency (CBDC) pilot program operated successfully in a practical setting involving multiple financial institutions.Testing environmentsPreviously, the CBDC system was tested in an isolated cloud environment. In this recent test, the system was installed on the servers of various financial institutions over a five-month period to evaluate its performance. The 1.2 billion KRW ($905,000) project included the participation of six companies, such as Kakao’s Krust Universe, KakaoBank, and KakaoPay, as well as 14 banks and the Korea Financial Telecommunications and Clearings Institute. Kookmin, Shinhan, and Woori were among the participating banks.Four scenariosThe BOK and financial institutions tested the system’s performance under four scenarios: increasing transaction requests per second, increasing the number of active users, reducing the transaction queue size, and adjusting the block generation time ratio. The increase in transaction requests led to a 10% decrease in transactions per second (TPS), from 2,100 TPS to 1,900 TPS, compared to the single cloud environment test. This result is still deemed acceptable, as the highest TPS recorded in the current small payment infrastructure network is 1,200, which occurs on paydays and other high-transaction days.Issues such as slower response times arose with higher transaction request volumes but were resolved by enlarging the transaction queue size and increasing the block formation time proportion in the block generation process. The block generation process involves two stages: block formation, where transactions are recorded, and block validation, where transactions are verified.Greater stabilityThe test demonstrated that transaction errors at individual institutions did not affect others, suggesting that a distributed ledger system offers greater management stability than a centralized system. However, institutional officers cited challenges in problem-solving and communication when using the distributed ledger system. The BOK plans to involve more institutions in ongoing experiments this year, supporting them in testing their smart contracts on the CBDC pilot system.Photo by Bundo Kim on Unsplash

Hot Wallet Exploit Results in $23M Bitrue Loss

Hot Wallet Exploit Results in $23M Bitrue LossBitrue, a Singapore-based crypto exchange, has fallen prey to a $23 million hack due to a hot wallet exploit. The exchange has been forced to suspend all withdrawals until April 18, to provide an opportunity to conduct a thorough security review.©Pexels/Karolina GrabowskaHot wallet vulnerabilityHot wallets are used by exchanges to store small amounts of cryptocurrencies for easy access. These wallets are connected to the internet and are therefore more vulnerable to attacks compared to cold wallets, which are stored offline. In the case of Bitrue, hackers were able to exploit the hot wallet and steal cryptocurrencies worth $23 million. In a series of Twitter posts, the exchange outlined that the exploit occurred at 07:18 (UTC) on Friday. “We were able to address the matter quickly and prevented the further exploit of funds”, it went on to state. The stolen digital assets include ETH, QNT, GALA, SHIB, HOT and MATIC. Bitrue outlined that the hot wallet funds account for only 5% of overall funds and that the rest of its wallets remain secure and have not been compromised.Blockchain security firm PeckShield outlined how the funds were swapped and drained. A wallet it has labeled as “Bitrue drainer” swapped 173,000 QNT, 22.55 billion SHIB tokens, 46.4 million GALA and 310,000 MATIC for 8,540 ETH. The ether is now being held within the following address:0x1819EDe3B8411EbC613F3603813Bf42aE09bA5A5Reimbursing usersIn response to the hack, Bitrue has promised to reimburse all affected users. However, the process could take some time. The incident underscores the importance of taking precautions when storing cryptocurrencies on exchanges. Users should only keep a minimal amount of cryptocurrencies on an exchange and should not store more than they can afford to lose. Ongoing exploits, hacks and frauds exemplify the need for users to only use reputable platforms with a proven track record of security.Doubling down on securityBitrue has promised to improve its security measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The exchange’s response to the hack has been lauded by many in the cryptocurrency community, who have praised the company’s transparency and commitment to reimbursing affected users. The cryptocurrency community has been vocal in its criticism of exchanges that fail to prioritize security. The Bitrue hack is just the latest in a series of incidents that have highlighted the importance of maintaining security in the world of cryptocurrency. It’s not the first security breach that the exchange has encountered. In 2019 Bitrue suffered a $4.7 million loss, with quantities of both XRP and Cardano (ADA) having been stolen. On that occasion, the exchange released tracking details relative to the stolen funds. Thanks to collaboration with Huobi, Bittrex and ChangeNOW, the funds and associated accounts were frozen.According to data from CoinGecko, Bitrue trades an average of $1 billion in digital assets daily, with bitcoin and ether trading pairs accounting for a large proportion of that trading volume. The Bitrue hack has been a wake-up call for the cryptocurrency community and serves as a reminder of the ongoing risks associated with storing cryptocurrencies on exchanges.
