Expert insights

Now in its sixth year, UDC has evolved into a comprehensive conference covering not only technology, but policies, finance and culture as well. Touting the slogan “All That Blockchain,” this year’s event brought together 39 local and international experts to present an in-depth vision of the trajectory of the blockchain industry.

The conference featured a series of sessions led by key industry figures such as Matt Sorg, Head of Technology at the Solana Foundation; Roger Ver, founder of Bitcoin.com; and Oh Se-hyeon, Executive Vice President of SK Telecom, who spoke on various topics like AI, blockchain and Web3.

Active online participation

This year’s UDC was also the first to be held both on and offline in a hybrid format to expand access for a bigger audience. The offline event was held at the Grand Walkerhill Seoul hotel on Nov. 13 and was streamed via YouTube. It attracted a record number of online visitors, with more than 100,000 total views on the livestream and up to 10,000 viewers watching at once.

The online sessions featured guests like Laura Shi, Head of International Expansion at Consensys, who explained the convenience of using digital asset wallets for managing digital asset transactions. In addition, Pacman Blur, Core Contributor at Blur, touched on the future of NFTs and their role in Web3 ecosystems.

A summary of the conference’s events and discussions can be found in the UDC 2023 Report, which is available in both Korean, English and Chinese on the UDC website.

“We hope that content from UDC 2023 will bring knowledge and vision of blockchain to more people,” the company said.

UDC has become increasingly popular since its inception, with more than 23,100 attendees participating over the last six years. All of the videos from this year’s conference have racked up a cumulative view count of 1.28 million as of November.

Superscrypt Backs Airstack’s Web3 Developer Platform

Superscrypt Backs Airstack’s Web3 Developer PlatformSingapore-based Superscrypt, an early stage blockchain investment company founded by state-owned global investment conglomerate Temasek, has led an investment round into Web3 developer platform, Airstack.Photo by Giorgio Trovato on UnsplashIndian influenceAirstack closed out the second tranche of its pre-seed funding round, having raised the largest portion of the $7 million raise via Superscrypt. Although based in Miami Beach, Florida, Airstack has a strong Indian influence. Three of its five founders, Deepesh Kumar, Vysakh Nair and Sarvesh Jain originate from the world’s most populous country. The firm’s main offering is to enable developers to be able to easily query on and off-chain data and integrate that same data into the Web3 apps that they are building. Airstack enables this functionality by featuring GraphQL, a query language for APIs and a runtime for fulfilling those queries with the user’s existing data, as a core component of its platform.Achieving greater functionality still, the start-up enhances that use of GraphQL by incorporating the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The company’s Miami Beach-based CEO and Co-Founder, Jason Goldberg, elaborated on the technology it is using in an interview with CoinDesk: “We did extensive interviews with developers over the past year, gaining insights into their previous tool usage and the challenges they faced. Airstack was built to directly address those pain points.”Recent platform launchThe product offering was launched last month and has already lured in over two hundred developers to use the platform. Those developers are harnessing the functionality of Airstack’s platform to assist them in their efforts to bring a broad range of dApps to market.Developer projects are grounded in areas such as marketing engines, decentralized finance (DeFi) portfolio optimizers, customer resource management tools, advertising platforms, and decentralized social media apps, together with messaging applications. With just a straightforward query and response approach, developers can use Airstack platform functionality to query, combine, and integrate on-chain or off-chain, cross-chain, and cross-application data. The offering applies to queries relative to the Ethereum and Polygon blockchain networks. The project intends to support additional blockchain networks going forward, while also intending to increase the level of query complexity made available to platform users.Joining Superscrypt on the Airstack cap table are Hashed Emergent, NGC, Primal Capital, UOB Ventures, Signum Capital, and others. Goldberg articulated the firm’s strategy going forward: “Our immediate focus is to onboard thousands of developers onto Airstack in the coming months. We aim to identify the areas where we add the most value and where genuine business use cases emerge before finalizing our pricing model.”Social app upgradeAt the same time as this funding announcement, Airstack also revealed a separate development related to its Jam social app. Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, Goldberg provided details on an update to the app which utilizes Airstack functionality in order to create social groups based on NFT ownership and collector status. That functionality can be extended further, so that data can be gathered across projects, creating bespoke user profiles relative to the user’s blockchain activity and presence. At the same time as this funding announcement, Airstack also revealed a separate development related to its Jam social app. Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, Goldberg provided details on an update to the app which utilizes Airstack functionality in order to create social groups based on NFT ownership and collector status. IOTA co-founder meets with Philippine Secretary of Trade to further adoption

Dominik Schiener, the co-founder of distributed ledger technology (DLT) project IOTA, outlined on X on Dec. 12 that he had met with Cristina Aldeguer-Roque, Secretary of Trade of the Philippines. Commenting further, Schiener wrote: “We are looking forward to expand IOTA and our trade infrastructure TWIN across South East Asia in 2025.” Photo by iSawRed on UnsplashCutting through trade barriersTWIN refers to IOTA’s Trade Worldwide Information Network, a continuation of another longstanding IOTA project, the Trade and Logistics Information Pipeline (TLIP). The objective of TWIN is to cut through trade barriers and improve connections between disparate national trading systems. In rolling out the network, IOTA has formed a consortium which includes organizations such as TradeMark Africa, the Global Alliance for Trade Facilitation and the Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade. TWIN seeks to optimize trade processes by merging physical goods with digital infrastructure, eliminating inefficiencies and boosting transparency. Schiener anticipates that once participants place data on the network, they will ultimately tokenize assets on it. In turn, this will result in utility for the IOTA token, once TWIN is released on the IOTA mainnet. The TWIN project is currently staffed by 28 people but Schiener believes that this will grow to 100 people over the course of the next two years. The project originally emerged in Germany, with the IOTA Foundation having its headquarters in Berlin. Initially, IOTA concerned itself with European blockchain initiatives in trying to find its place in the industry. Earlier this year, its Web3 identity authentication solution was chosen by the European Commission for inclusion within the European Blockchain Sandbox Initiative (EBSI). In August, the IOTA Foundation completed the final stage of the European Union’s blockchain pre-commercial procurement (PCP) program. Strategic expansionHowever, over the course of the past year, the project has expanded towards searching for product market fit within emerging markets. In November 2023, the project established the IOTA Ecosystem DLT Foundation within the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) financial center in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This marked the first DLT foundation to have established itself within the ADGM.  $100 million in funding was provided with the objective of nurturing the IOTA ecosystem and accelerating the growth of the IOTA protocol. Since then, the TON Foundation and the Aptos Foundation have moved to register under the ADGM’s DLT Foundations framework. East Africa has been ground zero for IOTA’s attempts to enhance cross-border processes related to trade documentation, where it has been working with TradeMark Africa and local regulators. In Singapore, the IOTA Foundation has collaborated with global innovation ecosystem Tenity to establish the IOTA Accelerator, a 12-week initiative aimed at assisting early-stage startups concerned with real-world asset (RWA) tokenization within the IOTA ecosystem. Schiener’s meeting in the Philippines would suggest that the project is making greater efforts still in terms of bringing about the adoption of the technology in Southeast Asia. In his X post, Schiener wrote: “Let's connect the world with sovereign digital infrastructure.”

FSN and Fingo join hands to pursue tokenized securities business

South Korean digital marketing firm FSN has entered into a strategic alliance with Fingo Company, the operator of the music copyright platform Fingo, to jointly work on a tokenized securities project based on the recently raised funds, according to local news site Newsis on Monday (KST).Photo by Chris Liverani on UnsplashUnlocking synergiesThrough this partnership, FSN and Fingo aim to collaborate on a token securities project. As both companies have experience in leveraging IP, they are expected to apply their expertise to the new business. In particular, FSN operates several IP-based Web3 projects such as Sunmiya Club and Bellygom NFT through its subsidiary Finger Labs, through which the firm has been demonstrating its competitive edge. Fingo also owns a variety of content-based IPs and is cooperating with major domestic securities companies. The two firms’ business capabilities are thus expected to create great synergy in the market. Fingo’s service allows anyone to share revenue made from music, a concept referred to as music revenue sharing, which was once limited to creators or singers only. Last year, it took a step into the tokenized securities sphere by signing a business deal with Mirae Asset Securities, the country’s largest asset manager, to establish a token securities service and launch innovative financial investment products. FSN has been gearing up to take on this collaborative project, namely a recent success in raising a total of KRW 10 billion (approximately $7.5 million) in funding. The company explained that with this considerable funding paired with its knowledge of Web3 and blockchain technology and experience in collaborative partnerships, it will be equipped to settle into the tokenized securities market seamlessly. Charting new horizons"As we have secured large-scale funding under stable conditions, we expect to successfully pursue new businesses, including that in tokenized securities," FSN CEO Lee Sang-seok said. "We will steadily expand new businesses by establishing partnerships with companies with competitiveness in various areas, starting with Fingo Company, which has a competitive edge in tokenized securities and music IP," he said.
