Animoca founder: $200T crypto market within 10 years

Markets·May 31, 2024, 7:30 AM

The global cryptocurrency market is poised for unprecedented growth, potentially reaching $200 trillion within a decade, according to Yat Siu, co-founder of Animoca Brands, a prominent Hong Kong-based Web3 game software company and venture capital firm.

2-3x within 18 months

Currently valued at approximately $2.7 trillion according to data from crypto aggregator CoinGecko, the cryptocurrency market is set to double or triple in the near term, Siu predicted on The Valr Podcast on May 28. “In the near term — within 12 to 18 months — we can conceive of a doubling or tripling of the space,” he stated, expressing strong confidence in the industry's future milestones.

Siu elaborated on his bold forecast, suggesting that over a five to ten-year period, the market could accelerate by 100 to 200 times, potentially reaching a valuation of $200 trillion or even higher. In conversation with Farzam Ehsani, the co-founder of Valr, a platform that allows users to buy, sell, store and transfer crypto assets, Siu said:

“I think we could reach that kind of number within a decade.”

This explosive growth, according to Siu, will be driven by billions of people becoming digital property owners within the Web3 ecosystem. Siu stated:

“It is entirely conceivable that we’re going to have a billion property owners because we’re going to have a billion token holders. This is not possible in the physical world.”

Asia fastest growing market

Siu also pointed out the regional dynamics within the Web3 space, noting that Asia has emerged as the fastest-growing market. “Right now, the leading force in Web3 is clearly Asia,” he argued, citing robust adoption rates in regions such as Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Japan. In contrast, jurisdictions like the United States are lagging behind, primarily due to regulatory uncertainties.

Siu pointed out that historically, the United States has tended to take a leadership role where new technology is concerned. Web3 is turning out to be the exception to that rule. With that, he thinks that it is Asia that will lead the way and that it will continue to lead for the foreseeable future where Web3 is concerned.

Bullish on Bitcoin

His optimism about the Web3 market's potential aligns with his bullish stance on Bitcoin, currently standing at a market capitalization of $1.3 trillion. Siu made another bold prediction recently, expressing confidence that Bitcoin would eventually reach $1 million. At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading at $68,346. While that’s far from his $1 million unit price prediction, he did state at Web Summit Rio in April that it would do so “over time.”

That bullishness from the Animoca founder has also manifested itself within the company itself. In early May, the company announced its entry into the Bitcoin ecosystem by endorsing the Opal Foundation, a Bitcoin-centric protocol. At the time, Siu suggested that Bitcoin is now primed for Web3.

Siu's projections reflect a broader optimism in the cryptocurrency industry, where rapid technological advancements and increasing adoption rates are expected to drive significant growth. As more individuals and institutions embrace digital assets, the potential for exponential market expansion becomes increasingly plausible.

Liminal expands into Middle East via Abu Dhabi approval

Liminal, a Singapore-based digital asset custodian, has gained regulatory approval in Abu Dhabi, as part of a series of recent steps the company has taken to expand across Asia and the Middle East. Extending digital asset custody to the Middle EastTaking to the X social media platform on May 13, the company outlined that its First Answer Middle East subsidiary received Financial Services Permission (FSP) from the Abu Dhabi Global Market's (ADGM) Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) on May 9. The approval allows the firm to provide digital asset custody in the region. Liminal had initially been granted in-principle approval last year. In a series of posts, the company outlined that it sees Abu Dhabi’s regulatory framework in respect of digital assets as forward-thinking. It drew particular attention to the work of the FSRA in developing a robust framework to enable institutions to enter the digital assets space.Photo by Sohail Sarwar on UnsplashGame changerOn the actual license approval itself, the company stated, “The FSP license allows Liminal to hold, manage, and safeguard digital assets on behalf of institutions, hedge funds, venture capitalists and professional clients. This is a game-changer for digital asset custody practices in the region.” Further regional expansionOver the course of recent months, Liminal has scored a number of regulatory successes within the Asia Pacific (APAC) and Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions. Its success within the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has not been confined to Abu Dhabi. In April, First Answer Custody FZE, a Dubai-based subsidiary company, secured initial approval from the emirate's regulator, the Virtual Asset Regulatory Authority (VARA).  Meanwhile, Liminal's Indian subsidiary, First Answer India Technologies, has been established and registered as a reporting entity. As a consequence, it has become the first digital asset custodian registered with India’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), an organization that falls under the umbrella of the Department of Revenue, and  which collects financial intelligence relative to money laundering.  Making further in-roads within the world’s most populous country in November, India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) appointed the firm with a mandate to manage seized digital assets. Liminal has ties with India insofar as it was founded by Mahin Gupta in 2021, the co-founder of crypto exchange ZebPay. In an interview with CoinDesk, Manan Vora, senior vice president of strategy and business operations at Liminal stated:"We initiated a strategic drive two years ago to secure regulatory licenses in key markets across APAC and EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), strategically positioning ourselves to cater to institutional clients.” Vora added: "Our strategic vision is to expand from our present technology presence in Europe and Taiwan to pushing for regulatory victories there. In Indonesia, we are already working as a technology provider for the nation's sovereign digital asset exchange." Within its home market of Singapore, Liminal was grandfathered into a new licensing system that the city-state introduced recently in respect of digital asset custody as a consequence of already having been a provider of such services in Singapore. The company has been given a grace period of six months. Within that timeframe, it intends to submit an application to local regulator, the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

Growing Concerns about Single Crypto Exchange Listings in Korea

Growing Concerns about Single Crypto Exchange Listings in KoreaAccording to Yonhap Infomax, there is increasing concern about single crypto exchange listings in the Korean market, following the recent arrest of two former Coinone employees.©Pexels/RODNAE ProductionsCrypto listing briberyThe individuals were detained by the Seoul prosecution for allegedly accepting about 3 billion KRW (equivalent to over $2.2 million) in bribes to list a certain cryptocurrency on the exchange.Prosecutors are investigating if these suspects were also involved in the listing of the Puriever token, which is reportedly connected to the kidnapping and murder of a woman in her forties in Gangnam, Seoul.Single exchange-listed cryptosA recent report by the Financial Services Commission (FSC) revealed that 389 cryptocurrencies were listed on a single Korean exchange in the second half of last year, a decrease from the previous year’s 403. Despite the decrease, the trend of single exchange listings continued. Exchanges often exclusively list specific cryptocurrencies to gain a competitive edge, as investors typically prefer larger exchanges with greater liquidity. However, these cryptocurrencies may lack proper review and management and are often highly volatile. The FSC report showed that 34% of cryptocurrencies listed on a single exchange had a market cap of less than 100 million KRW (~$76,000). The Financial Intelligence Unit also warned investors about price fluctuations and liquidity shortages.High volatile cryptocurrencies are attractive to exchanges, as they can lead to increased transaction fee profits.Transparent listingTo address this issue, experts advocate for a transparent listing process. One lawyer in the crypto industry noted that there is a global trend of regulating cryptocurrencies as securities, and if relevant bills pass in Korea, their issuance and disclosure will be regulated. Clear guidelines on disclosures could resolve the issues of single crypto exchange listings, the legal advisor added.Another industry insider has called for investor caution, stressing the need to consider the potential delisting of these crypto assets.
