HashKey to list platform token later this year

Web3 & Enterprise·June 25, 2024, 11:33 PM

Hong Kong-based digital asset financial services firm HashKey Group has announced its intention to list its platform token, HSK, in Q3 2024.

HSK tokenomics

The company set out details of the HSK listing via a series of posts on the X social media platform. The HSK token is based on the Ethereum ERC-20 token standard. Total token supply will be capped at one billion, 65% of which will be allocated towards ecosystem growth. The team will be incentivized by the allocation of 30% of the supply while 5% will be held back in a reserve fund.

Regarding the token’s burning mechanism, HashKey revealed it retains the discretion to repurchase up to 20% of net profits from specified businesses and subsequently burn the acquired tokens from the total supply.

Airdrop imminent

In a statement shared with The Block, HashKey Group detailed that HSK will be integrated across its various products and applications. The community airdrop, launching in late June, aims to encourage user participation. The company stated:

“HSK is scheduled to launch a community airdrop through HashKey's core businesses in late June, encouraging users to contribute to community building.”

The company believes that HSK will incentivize ecosystem contributors when it comes to development of its layer-2 ecosystem chain, the HashKey Chain. That incentive structure, the company maintains, will result in contributors “providing robust support,” while acting as a “driving force for on-chain users and assets.”

Integration with external ecosystems

The firm outlined that the HSK token is designed to integrate with external crypto ecosystems so as to best facilitate synergy between internal and external collaborations. HashKey Group boasts a comprehensive Web3 ecosystem, inclusive of infrastructure, middleware, AI, DeFi, GameFi and the Metaverse.

HashKey Group’s core businesses include HashKey Capital, HashKey Tokenisation and HashKey NFT. It also operates HashKey Exchange, a licensed cryptocurrency exchange in Hong Kong, with the exchange business having reached a $500 million assets-under-management (AUM) milestone earlier this month.

HashKey Cloud, a Web3 infrastructure provider, formed a strategic partnership with the Aptos Foundation last month with a view towards progressing projects relative to decentralized identity (DID) and security token offerings (STOs). HashKey Global, a global exchange launched in April, has risen to ninth spot in terms of overall crypto exchange trading volume.

In January, HashKey Group announced that it raised nearly $100 million in its Series A financing round, achieving a pre-money valuation above $1.2 billion. In September, the investment arm of the company, HashKey Capital, launched a $100 million fund focused on altcoins.

Dubai Regulator Issues Reprimand to OPNX Founders

Dubai Regulator Issues Reprimand to OPNX FoundersThe Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), the regulator that concerns itself with the digital assets market in the Emirate of Dubai, has formally reprimanded the founders of digital asset exchange OPNX.Photo by Kai Pilger on UnsplashVARA issued an investor and marketplace alert on April 12 to inform investors that OPNX was not a licensed entity regulated by VARA and with that, it urged investors to be cautious. The regulator has now gone one further, this time formally writing to OPNX’s founders to reprimand them. The statement cites the following rationale for the issuance of the reprimand:”Carrying out VA (Virtual Asset) Exchange Services on an unregulated basis in and from the Emirate of Dubai; and Marketing, promoting and/or advertising OPNX services and its native token [FLEX] without the necessary permits from VARA.”Contextual backgroundThe statement goes on to provide the context for the regulator’s most recent action. VARA became aware of OPNX soliciting the public to use the exchange in February of this year. It noted that the business was actively marketing through various social media channels “without establishing warranted restrictions for residents of Dubai/UAE.” VARA went on to explain that OPNX commenced trading in April without having secured a regulatory license despite the activity warranting such a license.Cease and desistOn February 27, VARA issued OPNX with a cease and desist order, relative to the foundation of the business and the marketing and promotion of services. Thereafter, the exchange applied certain restrictions but the regulator deemed the measures to not have been applied comprehensively across all OPNX communication channels, prompting it to issue a further cease and desist order the following month. The investor and marketplace alert followed in April as OPNX proceeded to launch its exchange. The written reprimand was then issued on April 18, “to address historical and ongoing activity conducted on an unregulated basis.” The recipients included the OPNX founders, (Mark Lamb, Sudhu Arumugam, Kyle Davies and Su Zhu) and the firm’s CEO Leslie Lamb.Given what the regulator deems to have been “a continued lack of satisfactory remedial action [taken] by the responsible parties,” it is continuing to actively monitor the situation. VARA stated that it will further investigate OPNX’s activity to assess further corrective measures that may be required to protect the market.Lack of industry supportThe digital assets industry is in no way enamored with founders Davies and Zhu. Their record has been badly blemished by the unceremonious collapse of their crypto hedge fund, Three Arrows Capital, in 2022. That failure wreaked major damage on the overarching crypto space, directly leading to the failure of other crypto businesses later that year.Prominent crypto venture capitalist Michael Arrington said of their capital raise for OPNX that it was “the saddest bulls**t I’ve heard in a long time.” It later transpired that two of the investment firms that OPNX suggested were backing the start-up refuted the claim. In response to this latest development, OPNX’s CEO Leslie Lamb told Blockworks that the business was initially launched in Hong Kong. “To confirm, we have no Dubai or UAE customers and do full KYC on all users,” she stated.

China Launches Digital Yuan ATMs in Hainan Resort City of Sanya

China Launches Digital Yuan ATMs in Hainan Resort City of SanyaThe latest in a long list of initiatives to bring about further use of China’s digital yuan has seen the introduction of e-CNY ATM machines within the resort city of Sanya on Hainan Island. That’s according to a recent report published by the South China Morning Post (SCMP).Photo by Monstera on PexelsInternational currency exchangeThe introduction of e-CNY foreign exchange machines aims to provide visitors with easy access to digital payments and enhance their experience in the local mobile payments ecosystem. Resembling traditional ATMs, these machines allow tourists to deposit 20 different currencies, including US dollars and euros, and receive a physical card loaded with e-CNY in return. The card can be used for seamless payments at participating merchants with a simple tap. Travelers can also use the machines to top up their e-CNY balance, check transaction records, and manage their funds. This initiative addresses the needs of tourists who often face challenges setting up Chinese mobile wallets, which have become essential for retail, dining, transportation, and shopping. These mobile wallets typically require real-name verification and a local bank account, posing difficulties for foreign visitors. While limited prepaid options have been available in recent years, the e-CNY card now offers a convenient digital payment solution without the need to download a separate app. The machines are currently available in two cities, with the Bank of China (BOC), one of 11 authorized banks for e-CNY, leading the development of these innovative devices.Earlier this year, BOC launched a similar foreign exchange machine at Yiwu International Trade City in Zhejiang province, emphasizing China’s efforts to promote digital currency and facilitate financial accessibility. Both Zhejiang and Hainan have been striving to become attractive destinations for foreign tourists and merchants. In May, administrators within the local government in Jiangsu Province confirmed that they would be launching an initiative to promote use of the digital currency within the local education system. The introduction of these machines aligns with Beijing’s mission to develop and promote its sovereign digital currency, known as the Digital Currency Electronic Payment (DCEP). The project, which began trials in 2019, aimed to enhance financial inclusion and digital finance accessibility for unbanked individuals.Digital yuan internationalizationChina has been actively pursuing the internationalization of the digital yuan, seeking to facilitate yuan-denominated trade and investment, while reducing reliance on the existing global financial system. In May, the BOC entered into a partnership with French financial services firm BNP Paribas that will see the company promote e-CNY to its corporate clients.China’s efforts to promote cross-border use of e-CNY extend to regions like Hong Kong, a key offshore yuan center. A trial of the e-CNY for cross-border payments took place last year, facilitating more than 150 million yuan ($22 million) of cross-border e-CNY transfers in 160 payments, involving 20 commercial banks in Hong Kong, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).As China continues to make inroads where adoption and use of the e-CNY are concerned, these developments signal a significant shift in the way we can expect sovereign currencies to be made available globally.

Korean Game Developers to Benefit from Higher NFT Trading Volume

Korean Game Developers to Benefit from Higher NFT Trading VolumeKorean game companies preparing to launch web 3.0 games are expected to benefit from the higher non-fungible token (NFT) trading volume, according to Korean news outlet Financial News.©Pexels/Tony LitvyakA report from decentralized app analytics platform DappRadar states that the NFT trading volume reached $4.7 billion in the first quarter this year, up 137.04% from the previous quarter. This volume is the highest since the second quarter of 2022.This year’s strong NFT market so far is good news for Korean game developers, which were negatively affected by a slowdown in the crypto industry last year due to various factors, including the Terra USD collapse and the bankruptcy of crypto exchange FTX.In fact, many game and content companies are expanding their ecosystems by tokenizing their game items and intellectual property (IP) rights.NexonOne such example is Nexon, the developer of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game MapleStory. Based on its IP rights, Nexon is creating the MapleStory Universe, an NFT-based blockchain ecosystem. Its first major project, a personal computer game named “MapleStory N,” will be launched to attract gamers worldwide.NetmarbleNetmarble, another Korean game company, will launch Modoo Marble 2: Metaworld on Wednesday for global gamers. The popular mobile board game will be rolled out on the MBX ecosystem operated by Netmarble’s blockchain subsidiary Marblex. The trade of buildings and land within the game would likely be facilitated through the use of NFTs.Com2uS HoldingsCultural content company Com2uS Holdings is also making its own efforts to expand its blockchain ecosystem. Its subsidiary Com2uS Platform recently forged a partnership with animation firm Daewon Media to strengthen its NFT business based on Daewon’s popular IP rights.A game industry official said NFT trading can address issues that caused concerns for gamers who doubted the legitimacy and price of items they traded.
